Hi, everyone! I'm not sure if anyone here remembers me or my game, but I'm Admiral Styles, and I had a little RM2K RPG called "Love and War", that I released a long while ago, back on the old Gaming World forums. (You can actually find the old thread over here: http://saltworld.net/forums/topic/1284-love-and-war-act-i-new-revamp-released/ Wow, has it really been so long...?) I've made the decision to go to Indiegogo to try and fund a new game in the series. Magical Girl Lavie is a JRPG  made with RPG Maker VX Ace starring Lavender "Lavie" Regale. It takes place some time before my aforementioned RPG, Love and War: Act I, making it sort of (but not really) a prequel. Those who have played Act I before will recognize some familiar faces, but no prior knowledge of the series will be required.

Chapter 1 of Magical Girl Lavie is intended to be a shorter game, roughly around 2-4 hours in length. I love the dozens-of-hours long epic RPGs as much as the next guy, but I feel like shorter, more focused RPGs can pack in a lot of fun too. MGL is also intended to be the first in a trilogy of similar-length games, if the first one is well received. The intention is to make this a commercial game (hopefully sold on Steam) after a successful crowdfunding campaign! Chapters 2 and 3 will follow afterward, perhaps with their own crowdfunding campaigns if all goes well with Chapter 1. Any extra funds we raise for Chapter 1 will go towards making Chapters 2 and 3 as well, of course!

In the end, it's very much my hope that "Magical Girl Lavie" is just the beginning, and that you'll be seeing a lot more "Love and War" from me in the future. :)  Please do let me know if you have any questions or comments (or have gotten stuck in the Baron Snake Cave when playing Act I - that place can be tricky!). If my ramblings here have piqued your interest at all, then I hope you'll decide to join me on this journey!

Indeed it does! You can check out the first post for more details. As for Act II, the main obstacle was the work on the revamp of Act I, so we'll see what happens now...

Just added a link to the new, revamped version of Act I on the first page. To any that have fond memories of the old version, or those who are curious, I hope you check it out and have fun!

A bit unusual, indeed.  Sorry about that, the LAW page has moved, so all the links were broken for a while. I've fixed 'em now, so hopefully they should work now, Commodore.  :)

Would it be possible to get my Love and War thread back? Thank ye kindly.  :)

Mark: Whatcha mean? :) Is it not loading for you, or not looking right?

Bandito: At first glance nothing seemed wrong, but I think I know what the problem is... For some weird reason, examining the right side of the ladder will eventually teleport you to a map that doesn't exist. For now, you can avoid that error by just examining the left side to continue onward. Sorry for that, I'll try and upload a fixed version soon. Bugs, how do they slip by?!

Bandito, that is downright snooker loopy. I've never encountered that bug before... Could you tell me which "version" of the game you're playing (with RTP, without)?. I wonder if it could be that all the maps hadn't finished extracting from the zip file?

Ho ho, boy. Love and War: It gets recommended in wording that would be used to sink other games!

Heya, Lachie D.! Good to see you again. I did play your game, I'll PM you with my thoughts. :)

Sorry about that, there's some odd problem going on with the webpage, I think... For now, I've reuploaded it here: http://www.antiochforever.com/law/misc/Law1-RTP.zip

Hope that works!

Aw, you guys...

james_the_composer: I've actually thought about that. In fact, I'm strongly considering doing just that for Act III, splitting it into two parts (Act III, Scene 1, and Act III, Scene 2?), though I'm not absolutely certain. As for Act II, you think that might be a good idea? It makes a certain amount of sense I guess, since many moons and suns ago I had planned Act I, Act II, and Act III as all part of one mammoth RPG...

Ouch. System restores are no fun, no fun at all. Even when they work...

I find myself going to Glendale after every sleep, just to see the man say "The weather gods should be fastidious about Thursdays"

Heh, I totally forgot about that... I think I put it in because I personally tend to notice things like that myself when I play RPGs. :) But only the truly dedicated will finish the game with the "rank" of Emperor Cool!

Well, once again, I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed Act I. But I do think that whether a player likes Love and War themselves depends on their own personal preferences. To use something of an example: the Metal Gear Solid series can be pretty polarizing. People tend to either love, love, love it, or find it to be a totally nonsensical mess and a complete waste of time. Something along those lines. Different things appeal to different people!

The funny thing is how Act I is just the tip of the iceberg in so many ways. It can be frustrating "building the base", and sometimes I just wanted to leap ahead and have big, huge, sweeping events happen all at once. But no, if I wanted to make the game true to my vision, it has to be a slow and steady progress. That's just me. :)

I really need to finish Act II. *grumbles*

Well, that sounds like a pretty sober and reasoned assessment Mr. Nemo, I appreciate it. :) It might be neat if you finished it (if you made it to the mines, you're pretty close to the end already!) but I wouldn't force it or anything. Glad you found some things to like about it, though, maybe I can improve a bit in Act II.

Oh, and: you really hated the music in Davenport? I guess there was a fair amount of RTP lurking there still, but I did think the Davenport theme was awfully nifty... Ah, well!

Thanks for the feedback on C'est Lavie Teodor, glad you liked it! Ryan may come across as a bit stiff there because of Lavie's wackiness, maybe? But, who really knows. :) I hope you enjoy Act I!

Well, I certainly hope to, but I should probably have Act II ready first.  :)

Trance2: Aw, thank you. :) It's funny you should mention that, because I once stumbled upon http://www.cest-lavie.co.jp/ and had much the same reaction...

Bagels!: Will do! *salute*

TFT: Oh, heh. Glad to hear that! Hey, don't you still owe me one of your way-cool four panel comics?! :)

By the way, a most dedicated LAWyer recently completed a walkthru for Act I, which can be found here: http://www.freespaces.com/lavalamp5/Love%20and%20War%20walkthrough.html  On the whole, it's quite a thorough guide! Hopefully that should help any who are stuck; as always, I'm but an e-mail away as well.

Whoa, this thread liiiiiives once more!

Bagels!: Hehe, thank you for the praise. Unfortunately, I can't give any specific release date. I can only state it won't be in 2007...    I'll be sticking with RM2K, indeed.

Nightblade: Looking forward to your own offering. :)

RPGer: Being stuck is never fun... If you're still not sure what to do, try checking the text file for a "mini-walkthru" that can get you through the first day. Hopefully, that'll help.

TFT: Gasp! Did you never get a chance to finish Act I? I... I feel a crying smiley coming on...

Not sure if I'm "allowed" to per se, but here are a couple more Act II screenshots:

Those are still using the older maps that have yet to be fully replaced.

And here's a screenshot of a different sort, heh:

Rulezz, er... What are you talking about?

Examples of new mapping, ahoy!

The new clothes boutique.

The new restaurant. Ryan still can't afford anything in here.

I also just noticed that Ryan is sporting new threads .

I figure a summer adventure needs new threads. :)

Sure, although much of the mapping is currently being redone, likely making at least some of these screenshots obsolete. :)

Ryan asks about... marmalade?

A pricey clothes boutique.

A restaurant. Ryan probably can't afford anything in here.

Juno ponders his situation.

Well, uh... Hey everyone, look! It's Twinfoxtails! And he's doing stuff!!!

Seriously though folks, concrete progress has been made recently on Act II. With new additions to the LAW team, if all continues as it has, I am hopeful for a release sometime this year. :)
