lately i've been really interested in the old memphis devil rap scene. most of the songs have crazy fast flows that use a really aggressive triplet pattern that i like hearing in rap. a lot of cheap production on early 00s tracks, which means lots of synths that sound like straight up general midi and distorted vocals. it all makes for a very interesting and distinctive sound !

I have been listening to some memphis rap also, mostly mixes by legowelt: http://awolfe.home.xs4all.nl/mixes.htm

Legowelt himself makes some good music too

I really liked nena's europop-style music when I was growing up. in baby school we had to make a new album cover for a CD, and I chose whatever album that song and lass mich ein pirat sein is on, but I used a picture of yulia volkova from t.A`t.y^ as reference instead for some reason and also put greek letters on it cuz that's what I was into as a teenage nerd

anyway here's more pop. starting with deep despair & mental scarring-pop

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sB_FsDcyvU I guess pairing this song with liquid sky is canon now

yo goddess thanks for turning me on to poison girls

I was looking up details on them. the singer, vi subversa, was a mother of 2 at 39 years old in the late 70's when poison girls released their first album.  she's in her late 70's now, and is a grandma. wish I had a punk rocker nana...

it's hard to believe it's been so long since those days...

this song's real badass:

sure thing. yeah vi subversa is a mother fuckin ass kicker!! afaik she's still extremely punk so i'm holding out hope she somehow gets a few more vocal performances in on something!... it kind of blows my mind that there are still people alive today who are more or less older than rock and roll...

I've always admired SSQ since I heard them on The Enigma Variations, but I've never been able to find their album. "Anonymous" is good! I used to eat up anything that brought sultry robots to mind.

That Nicolae Neacșu video is awesome.

I spent $$$ on RSD, but no RSD releases because I hate RSD. Didn't even go to a store like that. I got a bunch of Indian ragas and a bunch of jazz, and some other miscellaneous stuff. Eugene Chadbourne's Vol. 2: Solo Acoustic Guitar, a couple of Joe McPhee LPs on Hat Hut, a couple of the Wildflowers comps of NYC loft jazz, a Gabby Pahinui comp. So far I've listened to Chick Corea Piano Improvisations Vol. 2, which brings Satie and Debussy and Cage to mind, but because of those blue notes, also early George Winston and Chilly Gonzales. And I got this Lonnie Johnson and Eddie Lang compilation on Parlophone.

That Brian Dalmini song is thick in dx7 smog. I love the synth seagulls and the synth nylon string guitar.

the datach'i is very black midi

I really like the Clio track.

I've been listening to nueva ola and related Latin rock musics. Los Pasteles Verdes, Los Terricolas. I love the Hermanos Diablos track off this mix:

Last night I got a cheap copy of the Columbia box of Kurt Weill's Mahagonny. I've checked it out of the library before, but it's nice to have my own copy. Listened to side 2 this morning, the part with Jimmy Mahoney's trial.

I think this is the part where Jimmy is tied to a tree, dreading the coming morning:

Yma is a big fucking deal!! I think she probably had one of the most killer voices ever, and I'm frustrated that I can't find any non-exotica stuff she did, because solidified 50s white perceptions of what the darkest jungle sounds like gets really fucking lame to listen to after some point, no matter how unbelievable the vocalist is.

I used to listen to Oval and Arvo Part (and I guess I haven't disavowed either), but I'd never heard of this guy:
