Title: E3, 2009
Post by: Carrion Crow on June 01, 2009, 12:34:50 pm
Well look at me with 3 topics in VG. Maybe I am trying to get you old cynical bastards talking to each other again : ) Anyway, onto this week's subject:

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2009

To sum things up so far,

It's christmas for gamers!

So far I am glad that I won't have to mess with the settings of Crysis 2 for half an hour before I can get it to play because it will just be a case of opening a beer and putting a blu ray into the drive. I couldn't care less about Assassin's Creed 2. I have my eye on/hopes for:

I'm expecting to be the only GW member to give a rat's ass about F1 2009 by Codemasters.

But the PS3 looks to have some nice things coming up. Heavy Rain looks awesome, and I usually hate games like that. I'm also excited for Assassin's Creed 2, because the setting of the game is much more appealing to me than the setting we saw in the original.

GUESS AGAIN finally a multi-platform F1 game.

I am actually looking forward to knowing what Kojima's big whatever is all about. I mean it's shameless hype of course but when Big Boss is involved I will always be slightly excited.

If you own a PSP or Wii, yeah. Pisses me off that I have to wait until next year to play F1 2010 on my PS3.

And it's obviously a Metal Gear kart racer.

Yeah, PS3 seems to have a pretty good lineup, especially Uncharted 2. I'm also excited for Crysis 2, new Mario (if it's you know REAL Mario and not some stupid spinoff) and hoping that Nintendo will finally reveal new Zelda. I suppose not too many here are that interested in FF13 but I look forward to seeing more stuff about it.

And quietly waiting for Skies of Arcadia 2 announcement...

People care about Crysis? I thought that game was only used for benchmarks, like Quake 4.

Oh well, I wonder who will make an idiot of themselves at this years event? Having a poor sense of humor, I still laugh at sony's old "It's RIDGE RACCERRR" conference... Though this year, I'm actually looking forward to a few things for a change, like Mass Effect 2, and Modern Warfare 2 specifically. I doubt we'll be seeing anything about episode 3.

These are the ones I'm looking out for the most. Bioshock and Lost Planet are looking okay, and maybe Assassins Creed 2, depending on what they show of the gameplay.

Too many 2s.

L4D 2 what the hell? Valve caters to 360 fans because updating the game like TF2 doesn't work on xbox.

If this ever happens, I would probably be the happiest man alive. Maaaaaaaan even a remake of the first with HD graphics and extra stuff (oh wait they already did the latter with Legends). Jesus Christ there is no limit to how many times I would buy that game.

you're missing the point. either you actually have to do skateboard tricks on the controller (which would be a terrible decision because skateboarding is hard as fuck) or they make it not like skateboarding at all which makes the controller pointless

I thought this was a joke when I read this on another forum.

Are you shitting me? Has Valve fallen victim to the retard virus that seems to have afflicted nearly every other developer? Instead of fixing the game they have out now, they're going to release a fixed version as a separate product and charge full price? Whoo boy, I can't wait.

yeah that's what i thought you were doing until you responded to the balance board thing. guitar hero is insanely fun though and there's plenty of gimmicky controllers that are neat to play with, if only for a change. the wii dominates in this market.

Just saw the video at gametrailers where Square revealed the 360 version of FFXIII. Although the quality of the footage was bad, the game looked pretty much the same. Not surprising though.

Halo 3: ODST looks pretty cool too. Hopefully it'll be a 4 player game as well since the game is based on a group of ODST soldiers.

Most surpising announcement: CRACKDOWN 2!! Yes, finally! The first game was really underrated!

Looks exactly the same as the first tbh. A dissapointment for me.
It needs an actual change in terms of feel and control, as L4D always felt a tad too loose.

Edit: Or just patch it in...? That would SURELY be the best option.

I'm not paying 50$ for something that can be tossed into a DLC, but hey, maybe it won't be 50$ this time around... However; being that they're making a sequel barely after a year the first game was released; I doubt that.

Valve is now EA, oh good. Well, at least there's still Infinity Ward and Bioware.

Wow L4D 2 is releasing November 14th? This year or next year? In any case, its still gunna be really awesome and I like that I saw the characters actually using melee weapons. Also, Metal Gear Solid on the 360 sounds interesting but you play as Raiden after MGS4 which would make it feel kind of iffy

MW1 really caught me by surprise. I was like you, actually. I played a bit, did multiplayer a lot and got tired of it. Then; one day I decide to go back and play through all of the single player and was completely blown away. I was expecting generic patriotic tripe...

I just beat mass effect 1 too by the way, strange coincidence... Though I did just beat it in a week.

Yeah I was joking, obviously it all looks like DLC stuff. They will probably fix those lackluster E3 videos though, the game won't be out for a few more months. It certainly isn't worth $50.

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/988/988416p1.html
That's a list of all the changes so far.

The best thing about Mass Effect 2 is that you can transfer your save from the first one over to the second one and the story changes depending on what you did in the first. It's a shame most other developers don't do these kind of things.

Man, all the L4D 2 stuff is something they could add now to the first game via DLC/Update. They had some good ideas there like all the anti-camp stuff.

But come on, melee weapons, fire rounds, new SI and hazmat suit zombies are not worth 50$. The "game" better cost 10$ like the original should have since launch.

The biggest problem is still the player format of 4v4. It places too much value on a single player where if one leaves, everyone leaves because it is just crippling to play with less than 4. Maybe 6v6 or even 8v8 would be more suitable.

wish i would've known that sooner because when I beat the first one I was like okay need to make room for other things on my laptop and unistalled it so yeah its pretty cool I guess but not everybody hangs on to every saved game that they've ever made over the last 2 years on their computer I suppose

The only thing I am interested in is if Brink will be an Oblivion Mod in the same way Fallout 3 was.

I'm also hoping that SOMETHING will come out for the Wii. Anything that would justify in me still having one. There are a grand total of three games that have ever held my interest... none of them having been released within the last year.

Somehow that just looks so fake, my bet is that it's very early in the development and won't work that well. Wiimote is really overrated and while that looks better, I just kinda doubt Microsoft can release accurate and good motion sensor technology for a cheap enough price.

But if they can, and it will actually work, that's pretty amazing. Looks dumb but it's still cool.

Can you ruin your friends games by sticking your arms on either side of them and using your hands instead?  Because that's great.

I see how this could be used in cool ways but I'd have to see more videos of people actually testing it out before I would ever pay the undoubtedly high price they're going to charge for it.  That and there'd have to be some game that makes it worth it too!  It's not like I desperately need to not touch things to use netflix.

Yeah it's been said but I'm not particularly optimistic about this. I mean, the Wii Mote was practically hailed as just this side of VR on the immersion scale when the "revolution" first debuted, and then we get our hands on it and every game basically just uses three different gestures (WAGGLE THE CONTROLLER TO BREAK FREE OOOH I AM INSIDE THE GAME). And it also comes down to the problems that the Wii has - mainly a lack of developer support because the whole motion control thing makes it more complicated than the other two consoles. If Natal is truly as immersive as they are making it out to be, it could definitely be cool, but there's a middle ground that I have no interest in. Replacing a button tap with a waggle or a flick of the wrist is pretty boring.

How will they handle movement though? Like they showed a racing game and some karate thing and a skateboarding game, but if there was a first person shooter, how would you design a movement system? Would the player just WALK IN PLACE to move forward? That would get tedious and probably pretty inaccurate. I dunno! These are what drag down the whole idea for me.

This is how I feel about it too, it would take some really dedicated developers to use it in a way that doesn't completely suck.  The only way I could see a movement based game working is if you either had gestures for moving (which would be tedious, but not as bad as walking in place), or just have ONLY rails shooters or something.

I think the really important thing here is the idea of using finger guns in a video game is hilarious and that I would thoroughly enjoy at least giving it a try.

Yeah isn't Blizzcon alone practically as popular as E3 now? I know tickets go for like $200 or something ridiculous considering it's just BLIZZARD GAMES and they only ever have like three to take about. Let me guess....... another WoW expansion, Starcraft 2 and... oooh, ooh, I know this one........

Nintendo's conference is pretty damn boring! A new side scrolling Mario game, a new Wii Fit with a few more exercises, and now they are showing Wii Motion Plus with a new Wii Sports. OOH BASKETBALL AND PING PONG!!!! Yes this is what I want to use my videogame console to do, to play Ping Pong. Then they announce TENNIS GAMES and... shock, GOLF GAMES with the new technology. Because the Wii didn't have those before!

I really know that I shouldn't and I can't really explain why I do.  I think it's one of those desperate grasps at childhood or something because Zelda was my first video game and, I don't know, it's like I want to match the feeling I got when I played it when I was younger??  Except I know that that won't happen and yet I still need more Zelda.  give me more zelda.  why can't everybody just leave me alone

golden sun is probably one of the better rpgs in terms of gameplay.  the battles are alright but it had a lot of decent puzzles and unlike 95% of other rpgs it GAVE YOU SHIT TO DO when going through dungeons beyond fighting battles.  i think my favorite part of the game was the dungeons and i hate dungeons!

it was completely generic in terms of story and setting and all that jazz.  it's just, it plays better than your average rpg because the developers actually put a decent amount of effort into dungeon design and instead of WANDERING THROUGH CATACOMBS waiting for a random battle, your characters can all do shit in the overworld and actually getting gameplay outside of the battle system is kind of rare in a game like that.  i liked LUFIA games for the same reason despite the fact that lufia is dumb as hell

no, none of those are worth playing.  i love persona and man, persona 3 was probably the biggest disappointment ever.  persona 4 is apparently MORE OF THE SAME so fuck that.  never played rogue galaxy but i'm sure it's awful and radiata stories sounds like a dumb jrpg but maybe the gameplay is fun or something and it doesn't take itself too seriously.

i liked smt: nocturne.  also, suikoden 3 and ff12 are both pretty PLAYABLE and less dumb than most rpgs, suikoden 3 especially, altho its battle system was completely fucking incomprehensible to me.  the thing i liked about ff12 was that you played as VAAN but instead of making him the main character they just kind of shoved him off to the side as some peripheral faggot who was not really important.  i liked that YOUR DUDE was not really necessary at all.  also it was just pr. fun and the writing was uh, ACCEPTABLE compared to shit like star ocean

the only interesting thing about shadow hearts is the setting, which rules and people are gay for not doing that more often.  but i played it for five hours and got bored because in every other sense it's really mediocre.  the writing is silly and it's actually pretty UNFUN and tedious

maybe digital devil saga, too.  i didnt play the first one much but smt games always have kinda cool battles and they do crazy WEIRD shit.  like bort mentioned DICKGIRLS.  theyre kinda cool games.  persona 3....why....

The first one they start out in a computer program or something and at the end they go to the real world where 2 takes place.  Also its worth noting that you can carry some stuff over if you play DDS1 first(stat bonuses and items depending on how powerful you become and a not-so-secret character you can get depending on dialog choices you make in the first and second game).  Also I don't remember any dickgirls in 1, but i haven't finished 2 yet, so i guess they could be in there somewhere.

Wut?
Radiata Stories is probably one of the better jRPGs on the PS2, by far. Sure, it might be generic, but generic is what jRPGs specialize in anyway. But it is a pretty good jRPG, average story, looks nice with a nice combat system, suprizingly large and detailed world, and it has a lot of extra stuff to do. It also does not take it's self seriously, which is some that has always bothered me with jRPGs in general.

As for Valkyrie Profile 2, decent game, nowhere near as good as the first. The storyline is decent I guess, the combat system is similar to that of the first, but it plays out on a 3d field, where you have to move around and get close to enemies, once you are close it plays almost exactly the same as the battle system in the first, but in 3D.
The major problem with the game however is a lack of notable characters. I can remember pretty much every character from VP1, but in VP2, there is maybe 5-6 unique characters, the rest are disposable characters with absolutely no personality at all (and you will dispose of them, because you get stat boosting items for getting rid of characters, and without these stat boosting items the game becomes almost impossible to play, but with them the game becomes way too easy).

As for E3, been fairly dissapointing so if you ask me! Some parts made me rage (L4D2), some parts I just did could not bring myself to care about (everything Nintendo), everything else was kind of nothing special.

It was really cool because they didn't show the same scenes over and over like they did before. And of course, the game shifts from the Midgar type city to an open world (probably 5-6 hours into the game).

I'm guessing it will be like ff10 because walking on world maps has been dead since ps2 and this game is definitely not going to be like ff12.

edit: no it won't be on 360. At least it won't be at the same time that one comes out, because it's being released right after FF13. It's an mmorpg though so who cares.

Oh wow, this E3 is shaping up to be pretty sweet!

New Metroid looks really fucking cool, Mario Galaxy 2 is bound to be great, Uncharted 2 looks awesome, new FF13 material is always cool, Assassin's Creed 2 looks cool, hopefully it has fixed the issues the first game has. Then there's all the other games mentioned earlier and the PSP MGS could be half-decent too. I'm probably forgetting something but I was not expecting to look forward to so many games.

I'm afraid of this too but I hope it's going to have a world map of some sort. I just hate it when games are overly linear. Seriously, developers need to bring back world maps or add more exploration. DQ8 pulls off world map so well, many next gen RPG's would do well to have a similar world map.

Lufia 2 was really the only one that got the whole dungeon design thing right, the rest were much more typical FIGHT BATTLES, LEVEL UP, FIGHT BOSS.

Lufia 2 also benefited from a pretty cool and somewhat unique ending, at least for the time. And there was a fairly big, one year timeskip about a quarter of the way through the game which doesn't happen often.

lufia 2 was pretty good. i beat it years ago on an SNES emulator. i'm playing lunar 2 occasionally atm and it has pretty good gameplay. the story is laughably bad as is the writing but some of the characters are sort of CHARMING and it's not overly serious or anything

They said 2010 release for XI-2. As soon as I saw the "Online" below I just laughed. It wont be PS3 exclusive as they wouldn't make nearly as much money without a PC version.

Assassin's Creed 2 looks cool, hopefully it has fixed the issues the first game has.

If you mean the repetition of the missions and all that, then I belive they have done that. I was reading about the game in a magazine and they said they have made far more missions, including eliminating witnesses to a 'Not so stealthy assassination' as they put it, not that stealthy assassinations were actually possible, and that combat has been far improved with more Enemy types (Swordsman, Spearman, etc) and ranks of enemies. Also i think I remember reading that they are doing away with the leveled structure and all missions are obtained while running round the three cities.

When watching the Assassins Creed 2 gameplay at Sonys E3 conference the battles were still the same just different weapons, one enemy attacks at a time, they attacked he countered, pretty dumb AI, etc. Looks improved though from the original still but not by much.

the website (http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/) list windows and ps3(maybe they will do the world wide console release they originally wanted for XI with the pc version coming a little later?) as its platforms, though i suspect it may end up on the 360 sometime later down the line

Mario Galaxy 2 :\
Woulda preferred a 3D Super Mario World or 3D Super Mario Bros. 3 type game.

New Metroid game looks sick though... holy shit what a return to form. Prime 3: Corruption made me die a little inside. :(

Red Steel 2 looks great (coming from a fan of The Dark Tower series by Stephen King).

Modern Warfare 2 looks actually rather disappointing. Man the COD engine is beginning to show it's age.

Still got a lot of fucking videos to watch holy shit so many games!

This may forever be known as the e3 of "2's". I won't even begin to list them as there are a fucking lot.

Hopefully they'll do something for the AI before the final release. Also I like the new dual hidden blade they have there, although I hope I don;t have to disarm the enemies all the time and use the weapons, half of the fun I had in AC1 was using the hidden blade only in fights, so if I can do that in AC2 I will be glad, also they better let us use that gun he has, which is shown in the trailer.

I was going to say GIVE FF14 BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT in regards to the whole Online thing, thinking it might actually be some sort of co-op Diablo-ish RPG, but then I watched the trailer and went to the site and yeah it's another straight up MMORPG.

also I only watched like 25 minutes of the Nintendo E3 conference but did anyone see that Kingdom Hearts trailer? God damn that looks like garbage. Like pure unadulterated human creative garbage. What a stupid series, what a stupid developer. Fuck Square Enix.....fuck em.

I'm actually looking forward to FF13. When I chose to go with the 360, I pretty much made my piece with never playing another FF. Having a new one come to my system is nice. FF was the franchise (with FF7) that prompted me to upgrade from Snes & Genesis to Playstation back in 97, and I had good (geeky) memories of talking about character builds, secrets, and stuff with friends back in my FF6 era...so no matter how yawn/groan/cringe inducing this game may turn out to be, I know I'll be buying it at some point. The mixed futuristic setting doesn't bother me at all.

Other then that, I'm really only interested in Mass Effect 2 and Dead Rising 2. The cinematic trailer for The Old Republic looked really good, and I like the idea of the game but I don't play MMOs and am not likely to have a computer that will be able to run it by the time it comes out. It is nice to watch the technology evolve though...in three (or however many it has been) years we've gotten to the point where a cinematic trailer for a game looks as good/better as stuff that saw theatrical release.

So far everything I've seen with a 2 stuck on it has just looked like a cheap expansion/mission pack to the original game. L4D2, MW2 etc. None of them look like new games or even remotely interesting enough to warrant charging again for. Especially that L4D2 one, which looked like a frankly shit fan mod.

Golden Sun DS whoooooop though. Loved the first 2, but I thought the story ended with the end of the second game. I don't remember any loose thre nevermind I just remembered the ending as I typed this.

Honestly this E3 is not impressing me so far. There has been nothing really interesting or any real comedic fuckups (sony conferences tend to be hilarious in this regard)

I just hope Mass Effect 2 fixes those boring ass mako levels, man that shit was pointless. Also Crysis 2 was announced.. I wonder what the specs of that game will be  :shocking:

Yeah seriously, it was a pretty huge buzzkill when I found out that the game was pretty much over after you visit those three story planets. Sure you can hunt for MINERALS and crashed probes and medallions and shit but that was boring. Even doing a ton of sidequests and stuff on the Citadel and the planets you can actually visit properly, my total game time was somewhere around 14-15 hours which was pretty lousy. Then again, most of BioWare's more recent games have suffered from shortness, and the ones that don't (Neverwinter Nights) bore you to death before you finish them.

The thing I found with mass effect was the main story missions were fucking excellent and a whole lot of fun, but everything that was a sidequest was boring and felt like really generic mmo quests/mako sections. And as mentioned there was only like 4 or 5 story missions. People say the game is amazing but there's like 5 hours of great content and 10-20 hours of dull boring grindy repetitive crap.

If they could keep up the polish and level design of the main campaign into the sidequests it'd be an amazing game, but I doubt they will

There were only a couple of things that really bothered me with the first Mass Effect. One was the large amount of pop-in. When the game had all its textures, it looked really nice, but it was really annoying when it took about four seconds for the level of detail to catch up to the camera.

I didn't mind the Mako missions that much. It might just be a throwback to how I played Morrowind, which was to just wander aimlessly until I got so bored I returned to the story, or stumbled into it by accident. After my first play through, I would visit all the "uncharted worlds" I could first, just for the xp, before heading back to those three story content worlds. I did not like the invisible walls on the "Liara's dig site" planet. By that time, I'd climbed several extra terrestrial versions of everest, so being unable to navigate up a small hill smacked of a lack of foresight in game design.

Since it's Bioware, the story will be, at the very least, passable, so that aside - With tightened AI, squad control, textures that aren't perpetually running late, and with some more variety in landscapes (including some that feel truly foreign and alien instead of simply being homogenized copies with different colored skies...) I'd be pretty happy.

While there is no confirmed 360 version, Square-Enix hasn't ruled out "other options"... which basically means there will most likely be a 360 version later as well. Called it!

That's great but it still won't be out the same time the ps3 or PC version comes out.

Also the motion control things are dumb because it doesn't matter how precise they are, no developer for either of those consoles will make games for them. With the Wii, you have no other choice but to use what they give you. So while it's cool that these things are "enhancing" what the Wii has done, they won't be able to get off the ground. Maybe they'll get some really bad arcade games using it but that's about it.

It's fucking terrible, trust me. I've used it and it's not noticeable at all what difference it makes to the wiimote in terms of functionality. Ergonomically it's stupidly heavy and completely unbalances the weight distribution of the wiimote (it plugs into the bottom of it and there is nothing on the top to counterbalance the new weight) so it's actually really tiring to use for any period of time. It's just an uncomfortable piece of shit.

did anyone see this conviction trailer? the previous ones were absolutely terrible (seriously the only real thing they showed was SAM CAN NOW PICK UP... OBJECTS!!!) and it is completely different than i expected. it looks really, really good which is great considering how disappointing double agent was

it seems very CINEMATIC and smooth and i'm very impressed with the footage, even though it's cherry picked and they probably plotted out the path through the level to the foot he could take to make sure it looked this awesome. i hope the rest is as good as the footage otherwise it'll be kind of EHH (pandora tomorrow, double agent both like this!!). the action at the end was pretty wonky though, but i think that the player just screwed up the entrance procedure because he looked pretty damn close to dying.

http://www.gametrailers.com/video/e3-09-metroid-other/50237

so is it just me, or did they just turn metroid into every other science fiction action game on the face of the earth?  samus aran doesn't have fucking friends.  she doesn't have supervisors or rivals.  i don't want cool poses, one-liners or intergalactic council meetings in my metroid, and i definitely don't want it to be some epic, sweeping space opera.  that is superfluous bullshit that should serve as a backdrop, if it's even included at all.  yeah, prime 3 did this but retro handled it well, not CLOSEUP OF INSIDE OF GUN seriously guys

just drop me on a well-designed planet with no radio contact and let me collect shit until you decide the game is over.  that's all you need to do, nintendo.

p.s. lookin forward to those spectacular breast physics as always, team ninja.

Compared to what? It feels very much like the retro, pre-pretty boy castlevanias to me (though with obvious graphical upgrades).

The one you should be complaining about is the castlevania fighting game for the Wii.

Would they have to develop around the Natal system though? That article said that the guy used the Natal with Burnout Paradise, which was already out. So unless the guys who made Burnout Paradise remade the game to work with the Natal. It seems like you can use it with almost any 360 games.

You could be feeling this way because "Lords of Shadow" was originally announced back in August of 2008 as a completely new IP, but now it has Castlevania and Kojima slapped across it.

What the fuck. Project M? Team Ninja? I have never even heard of these before.

I get some of this, but come on. If they took out the cool poses and all the extreme angles, then why bother calling them "Team Ninja" in the first place?

admittedly i couldn't tell whether this was a serious question or not but i'll treat it like one anyway

why should team ninja get to put their blatant imprints that don't mesh with what the metroid franchise is all about into the game?  because they're team ninja?  i don't buy this, man.

i'm going to cite grasshopper manufacture as an example.  suda51 has gone on record saying that he (and his company by extension) doesn't imprint their personal style on works they've licensed out of respect for the intent of the original work, but you could probably still tell that it's a grasshopper manufacture game anyway.  subtlety.

that's grasshopper though and not team ninja.  they obviously have different styles, and my argument is that yeah this kind of stuff would be okay (as far as a game can really be okay which is arguable since i've pretty much grown tired of all games nowadays) if it wasn't metroid.  this isn't a dig at team ninja (most of my previous post was) since they've already proven themselves as competent developers, but i don't think their style is going to provide the kind of metroid that i'd want to play.  if i play the game and love it, i'll eat whatever bird you want.  for now, this trailer left a pretty sour taste in my mouth.

ohhhh shut up.  this is annoying.  i don't even feel like i should have to explain how compared to something like DEATHCORE 2 or whatever other garbage is coming out this year that people are flipping out about, heavy rain is kind of a breath of fresh air.  any game that puts such an emphasis on CINEMATICS is something i am going to be a bit more fond of than other games, but the fact that it is concerning something that hasn't really been done much in video games and appears to be plot-driven with passable dialogue are also factors.  bottom line is it looks better and less dumb than 99% of other video games even with its apparent flaws and if you weren't bringing out some tired, quintessentially-you argument about how poorly they compare to a medium much more developed than video games, i probably would not need to be typing this post.

i agree with this btw. i think games like heavy rain are pretty interesting and worth a purchase, not to mention that unlike something like idk HALO : DEATH GRUNT KOMMANDO 4 or CoD4, it seems like a genuine step forward for interactive entertainment (for example, it's being developed more as a movie than a game)

it'll be interesting to me to see whether or not the game is TRULY plot-driven, because i feel like more often than not 'plot driven' games (or rather, ones that are advertised as plot driven) are clearly designed with things like OKAY WELL WE DEFINITELY HAVE TO HAVE A FIGHT IN A WAREHOUSE taking priority over the story. when's the last time you played a game where the setting could not be changed to a completely different location and the dialogue, plot would make exactly the same amount of sense if they just changed the lines referring to the exact location you are currently shooting bad guys?

quintessentially you because you are the only one who would take a shit on a game even when it is clearly trying to be BETTER than just a silly game.  i am willing to give credit for ambition and effort, even when it does not necessarily come out that brilliantly.  we all say similar things but i don't think any of us look at what is, objectively, a game that is quite a bit less stupid than most others and be like "feh feh...it aint a movie".  who would expect it to be a movie?  this is not a reasonable demand of games at their current stage of development.  ALL GAMES will be terrible if you compare them to a century-old medium that has had multiple lifetimes to develop and bloom without any of the issues that face games (perception as childish distractions), and at that point why even bother playing them or talking about them?  i was not trying to make you feel like any idiot, though.

btw indigo prophecy is one of my favorite games despite being completely fucking idiotic.  like the first couple hours of the game really go beyond what most games even try to do and make the overall experience worthwhile for me.  if they manage to make this game like that one without all the stupid bullshit, it will be a fantastic game.  i genuinely enjoyed the first 2-3 hours of IP.  the mood and the gameplay and all of it.  we will see if INTERNET MONSTERS and matrix fights ruin this one as well.

it's worth playing just to see how quickly a game can go from being fairly enjoyable to being genuinely fucking abysmal.  like no part of it was any better than COMPLETELY TERRIBLE.  internet monsters, man.  i'm not joking.  it could not have been any worse had someone sat down and really tried to write the absolute biggest load of horseshit imaginable.  i like the game a lot but it's for two different reasons.  i unironically like the first part, but the second part is really pretty humorous in how stupid it is.  there is this scene where some cop confesses her love for the main character when she has known him a grand total of oh............say.......10 hours???  it's the best.

Retro is still out there but according to Reggie they are working on another project, which is just as well as they've been stuck on Metroid since 1999 or 2000.  Considering all the cool looking projects they had to cancel when the business was in turmoil before Nintendo picked them up, it might be nice to see them revived or just something new since they've proven their worth with Metroid.  I'd personally like to see Raven Blade revived, or maybe Thunder Car Rally so Nintendo can have a Twisted Metal equivalent.

In any case, I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with Metroid: Other M.  I remember initially Metroid Prime was going to be designed as a third person action game but it was scrapped because the concepts didn't pan out as well as they hoped.  This seems to be a second chance at that and it looks pretty darn good, but I'm fearful that the classic gameplay may be lost for something more action oriented... but damn does it look nice.  But still... (but damn)

Would they have to develop around the Natal system though? That article said that the guy used the Natal with Burnout Paradise, which was already out. So unless the guys who made Burnout Paradise remade the game to work with the Natal. It seems like you can use it with almost any 360 games.

That's likely exactly what happened unless I missed something.  Similar to when Nintendo first showed off the Wii Remote at TGS 2005 they retro fitted Metroid Prime 2: Echoes to show off how first person controls would adapt to the controller.
Title: E3, 2009
Post by: something bizarre and impractical on June 05, 2009, 02:22:21 am
Well it's not much of a conceptual leap that Natal delivers roughly the same information to the game itself, it's just a matter of how it gets inputted to the device. I'm sure the technical aspects of this are more complicated, but I doubt much rework of the game itself would be required tbh.

I couldn't tell you how it all works, though MS didn't really make a point of saying it will work with current 360 games, just that it would work with all current 360 hardware.  But I suppose that doesn't really say anything either.

@ Pulits

It could end up as something different, you never know.  Miyamoto made a point of showing IGN that Link had no sword in the artwork and hushed up about it a bit later.  Then again, you could always argue that Link probably hasn't acquired it yet.

And also, I don't think that's NP's score for the Conduit.

Yeah, the first half was really neat.  You play as both a "killer" and the cops trying to find the killer, so you can have the cops miss certain evidence.  It was really neat.  Also you can completely ruin the character's lives.

But then out of fucking NOWHERE, it turns out the whole thing was a conspiracy created by a conscious Internet, and the world spirals toward singularity and it turns out this is all about the end of the world in 2012.

Eh, FF10's soundtrack wasn't that great either, about on-par with FF12. There were a few really good tracks but rest is pretty forgettable. Uematsu wasn't even main composer for FF10. FF11 had a really cool soundtrack though.

FF12's soundtrack was composed by the same guy who did Final Fantasy Tactics soundtrack. His style is very distinctive and yeah, unfortunately FF12's score wasn't really memorable, although it was still pretty good.

Anyway, at least all the FF13 tracks I have heard so far sound pretty promising so I hope the soundtrack will be pretty good. But it won't be Uematsu good, I'm certain.

I was referring to the instruments used to make the songs.  FF10 was actually scored with a real orchestra.  Most of the songs in FF12 were made on a computer.

HA! Scribblenauts is nuts!

Go the 11 minute mark here, it's about 2 to 3 minutes of footage.

It follows TP style. Yeah, they should probably call it TP2 just like they did with Mario lollol.

Fags. ¬_¬

what are you whining about

you got a new zelda, and it isn't cel-shaded (i mean i wouldn't mind but every motherfucking person other than me would)

did it absolutely need a new style?

i mean if the game isn't re-hashed tp(which was re-hashed past zeldas) then who the fuck gives a shit?

I really hope it isn't a re-hashed TP. That's all. :(
I'm still angry at SMG2... that's about it!

Oh man, I wonder if Jack the Ripper is in Scribblenauts.  I am so getting this game just to see who all I can think of to do battle with each other.

This game is going to have to get at least an E10+ rating because you can make it as violent as you want.  Killing a baby with a chainsaw seems like a real possibility!

I don't mind SMG2, I mean, yeah, it's re-hashed SMG with Yoshi in it, but god, I loved SMG so much I don't mind paying for it again to play new levels.

I'm also definitely getting New Super Mario Bros. I loved the DS one, and the thing that selled it to me was when he confirmed even though co-op is there and it's fun, the core (and he said FOR HARDCORE people, though I think that's just trying to please the people who whine about casual gamers) of the game still lies in single player Mario platforming.

I just wish the graphics were better, but they might be when it comes out.

I hope, at least.

You think that's something?  Just came across this post over at Neogaf from someone who played the game...

Quote
I had played all the big titles at E3. Private showings of God of War III, Heavy Rain, Alan Wake. But at 4:00 on Thursday, I was wandering around the show floor, wondering what else I had to see. I saw a small little booth for "Scribblenauts!" in the Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment section. I mean, who goes to that booth? But I remember hearing about it on GAF, and so I decided to check it out.

Best game of E3? Without a fucking doubt. Anyone who says otherwise did not play Scribblenauts. Best game of all time? Jesus Christ, I don't know, maybe. It's a game that challenges your IMAGINATION. No other game has ever done that.

So listen to this story. I was in the early levels; I didn't quite have an idea of how ridiculously in-depth the database was. I was summoning things like ladders, glasses of water, rayguns, what have you. But I reached a level with zombie robots, and the zombie robots kept killing me. Rayguns didn't work, a torch didn't work, a pickaxe didn't work. In my frustration, I wrote in "Time Machine". And one popped up. What the fuck? A smile dawned on my face. I hopped in, and the option was given to me to either travel to the past or the future. I chose past. When I hopped out, there were fucking dinosaurs walking around. I clicked one, and realized I could RIDE THEM. So I hopped on a fucking DINOSAUR, traveled back to the present, and stomped the shit out of robot zombies. Did you just read that sentence? Did you really? I FUCKING TRAVELED THROUGH TIME AND JUMPED ON A DINOSAUR AND USED IT TO KILL MOTHERFUCKING ROBOT ZOMBIES. This game is unbelievable. Impossible. There's nothing you can't do.

Holy fucking shit.

Oh... there's more

The entire read is awesome, but do yourself a favor and read bulletpoint #2 with the shark battle.  The final paragraph is all kinds of incredible.

ggg.g..g.g I WANT THIS GAME!!!

This is the first time since I got my DS that I've actually been really fucking excited about a game for it.

It just seems like you could spend hours and hours and hours just screwing around with shit in it.  That, and there are 220 levels, and it sounds like you can create your own levels?

man i am SO excited for Scribblenauts. i'm a huge DS fan and it seems like it's going to be the best game ever, or at least the ultimate sandbox game. in one article, one guy was saying how they had finished the game and they're just putting in more objects. he said that they put in pretty much every dinosaur a normal person would know and that now they were working on the type of dinosaurs that paleontologists might not even know. and haha, they have CTHULU. duuude i can't wait for this game :D :D :D

Yeah, I know, I seriously expected the guys to be something like
"Okay, we finished the ENTIRE ENGINE and gameplay, all we can do is add more things.
Let's have another six months of object adding."

My biggest problem with scribblenauts is that they've apparently added a bunch of internet memes (specifically ones that NO ONE EVEN CARES ABOUT), which grosses me out to the point where I kind of don't want to give them any money.
