I've played the Trackmania games on and off since 2006 and I remember playing Nations with a few GW members about a year and a half ago or so. I've never found myself being truly bored, especially with United Forever.
The draw with Trackmania has to be, without a doubt, how radically different each of the seven environments are and how different they play from one another. Stadium is pretty entertaining for what it is, but I'd have to say that Bay and Coast each hold a place in my heart. I like the Bay environment because it allows me to make sprawling urban metropolis circuits.
Coast is my newest love. I used to detest it because it felt like nothing more than a jungle/village setting with terrible handling, but after finding out how to make Grand Prix-esque circuits and adjusting to the demanding handling of the Coast cars, I've come to appreciate it a heck of a lot.
So, who else still plays Trackmania to any extent? Which version do you guys play?
And to those who don't even know what Trackmania is (which is becoming pretty rare these days), head on over to http://www.trackmania.com (http://www.trackmania.com") and try out the free version of the game, Trackmania Nations Forever.
If you enjoy that, then you can shell out about $20 or $30 of your hard earned dollars for Trackmania United Forever, which is basically seven times greater than the free version given all the options.
And, of course, you can paint your own cars and create your own tracks. The editors are quite impressive for what they are, and your created tracks can be as realistic or wild as you wish. Both cars and tracks can be shared online, and that is one of the main draws to the game.
Other things which can be customized are music (importing OGG files), car decals/stickers, track graphics (such as roadside signs and banners), as well as full graphical mods.
To top it things off, here are some of the things you can do in Trackmania. Seven videos, one from each of the selectable environments:
A wild Bay circuit that someone made.
One of my simplistic Coast circuits.
The Stadium environment is very fast and intense.
A very interesting Snow environment track
A Rally track. The cars are very flimsy and love to roll
The speed can get very excessive on Island tracks
Last but not least, the Desert environment
My preferred place to download vehicle models/skins: http://www.trackmania-carpark.com
My preferred place to download user-made tracks, though I mostly play my own and ones that friends make: http://trackmania-exchange.com
And hey...

I'm siding with the F1 drivers, the Martini ad is distracting. That damn sign made me crash twice!
(You may not get the above reference at all if you don't follow Formula One.)

My brother still has this installed as far as I remember. I haven't played it in a month or so because I uninstalled it for some reason.
I remember making a track where the goal was to reverse-jump into the platform above you using a "C"-shaped ramp. Three times. And then you had to speed up juuuust right in order to jump into the (flying) finish line. Good times.

I haven't played for a little while but my tracks rule. still haven't bought United Forever

Get on it, chump! United Forever prolongs the life of the game considerably, especially if you did not play Trackmania Original or Sunrise.

Know what would make Trackmania the best racing game ever? Car collision.

I have a slight feeling that collisions would destroy the online aspect of the game. When there are over 20 vehicles all starting from the same position and following the same narrow routes, it makes me believe that the insane death defying tracks would be even more impossible to get through than some already are.
Also, Trackmania is essentially just a nicely dressed up time trial game. Collisions would change the focus of the game by quite a significant amount. It's great being able to whiz through several other players (or ghosts if you are racing against replays) without having to worry about smashing each other off the track. It lets you focus 100% on the racing line and corners, trying to find the absolute best line to take to shave off every possible millisecond from the guy in front of you.
-
Yeah, some of the tracks are so insane that collisions would make them not fun
-
I'm just proposing they make a seperate mode that has collisions, that's all.
-
I still play the free Trackmania Nations every so often, but haven't made any tracks in a while. Anythign I have done was a test to see how fast I can get the vehicle to go etc etc

That would be a neat idea.

Haha, if you're into speed tests.. You should try the Bay environment in United Forever. I've launched my car into the air, resulting it flying hundreds of feet in front of the track and into the distant hills and cityscape that serve as the background/horizon. Those city buildings look absolutely awful up close. The textures look like PS1 quality, if even that. Understandable though, since you're not even supposed to be up close to them at all.
-
Haha awesome, I'd have to look into it. Especially if they're PS1 textures 'cause I've been playing PS1 games more recently thanks to the PS3's Backward compatablitiy, just can't find where I left the Parasite Eve 2 box with Disk 2 in it...
I think I still have a track made in Trackmania Nations on the internet somewhere, which I remember being symmetrical to a point and requiring driving round the two paths for each lap. It might still be on mediafire if I didn't delete it...
EDIT: Still there woo! Not sure if it is that track, but it should be: http://www.mediafire.com/file/luvxaej2ayw/Symetrical Highway.Challenge.Gbx
-
Well the PS1-like textures are only on buildings far off into the background and aren't normally reachable. I would say that 90% of the graphics in TMUF are last gen. The other 10% are the vehicles, mostly the user created ones. Some look quite nice ingame and are, in my opinion, graphically between last gen and current gen.
And I just realized that you can probably go even faster and further on Island circuits. This is something I should look into when I play next.

yeah I know all this but I still cannot fathom stumping up the money. I need this cash for other things!

Collisions would destroy Trackmania, because many tracks are too tight for more than one car to pass through, and it does not have any starting lines. You all start overlapping each other.
Also, I still have United Forever. But I haven't been playing for a while.
You know what sucks though? 95% of the servers are Nations Forever, 5% are United Forever, 90% of those are Island servers, and 40% of the total servers are almost empty. Most United servers are empty.
:(

Which is a huge shame. Stadium tracks are so boring to me now, since I played Nations on and off for about two years. It just feels so limited and looks so bland.
I think.. I might actually hate Stadium...
-
Actually it's one of the less limited, and I do like it alot, but yeah, since everybody is on it there's not much online variety. :(

yeah I'm sure if I played United for any length of time I'd realise this! then again the other environments (particularly desert) look really awesome so it would not traumatise me too much
-
To be honest, desert and rally are imo the most stale environments in the entire game.
Snow is really just fucked up, Island is the fastest and Coast the hardest, because it has a pace entirely different than anything else Trackmania.
And Stadium is all around, but it has a bazillion different blocks.. so idk

You forgot Bay, buddy. Easily the most graphically pleasing environment to choose from.
-
I'LL GIVE YOU FAST AND INTENSE lemme get fraps out and show off my tracks.
yeah bay looks really nice. when I get United I am gonna make Monte Carlo with bay.
-
Ah, I tried that. It didn't go so well, but it did the job well enough. Coast might be better, since the pieces are more Grand Prix styled. There aren't any nice buildings or anything, though.
Bay is very atmospheric though and I love making regular racing circuits on it. Over the weekend I had a friend, who only plays Trackmania once every few months, race on this track with several of my ghost replays. He did not do too well!
-
UPRC you make exactly the opposite tracks to me. I love making wild insane completely impossible tracks.
-
Yeah, I do that when I'm a bit bored or out of ideas. That's when I just start placing pieces randomly and seeing where I end up in terms of design. Randomly designed tracks are the best. I like making regular race tracks though because I feel that finding the right line around the turns is more challenging than making wild jumps and the like. I watched my friend do a few crazy tracks and he did fairly well, but then when I threw him onto one of my "normal" tracks, he really stuggled. I think it's because the cars of Trackmania are very sensitive and fast, much more so than arcade racers, and this doesn't blend well with slow, winding race tracks.
I should really try to make a crazy track in Bay that involves leaping from building to building and could be named after some generic building leaping superhero.
-
I haven't done many tracks myself, but if I got back into it (I'm sure if we get together you guys will force me back into it) I could make some more.
ALl of the tracks I did are on my youtube account, though.

Q: Is the Nintendo DS version of this any good?
-
It's ok, but..
3 environments: Stadium, Desert and Rally(iirc, at least), dumb graphics, no online play, dumbed down track editor.
Otherwise it's the exact same game... I guess.
-

Looks decent enough for Trackmania fans.
-
Here are some tracks I made. I like to make fun one-stunt tracks.
EDIT: And here's the start of one track I made. The beginning is awesome, but the rest is pretty boring.
-
I have United Forever but I haven't played in.. well forever. It's a great game and I should play it again!
-
Well, since we're posting videos, why the hell not?
I don't recall where the track is from, but texture mods can be pretty awesome.
Some track I made while looking at texture mods. It's pretty fun, iirc. Not too long or hard, but still original enough to be entertaining.
A bland stadium track I did sometime ago, it's... well, bland.
I just realized this track looks better than I remember it to, and it looks fun to play again. Either way, it's a slow coast track modeled after Super Mario Kart's Rainbow Road.
I just realized I only ever made 3 complete tracks. What a shame. :(
charlie's in loooove

Wah, This game looks like serious fun, I'll donwload it tomorrow and play it till my fingers hurt.
I love wachy tracks racing games, and even more if I can make them!!
