Title: Shall I buy a Sega Dreamcast?
Post by: SupremeWarrior on June 08, 2009, 06:56:58 pm
Ok, dudes I've been looking to buy a Sega Dreamcast for a long time just to play the Shenmue series. I was wondering if it's worth it just for that or are there any other hidden gems I don't know about which are worth buying a Sega Dreamcast for? Second hand Sega Dreamcasts on ebay are about £30, Mint condition ones are about £50 and upwards.

Aren't the shenmue series also for the original xbox?

I think for 50 pounds (or euro I don't know I do not live there I just know the conversion by memory because I buy a lot in ebay) buying a dreamcast is a little pricey but if you think it is a good idea and you want to play certain games then buy it, it's your money anyways. You don't have to get permission from GW to buy it.

True that, but what I'm mostly looking for is other Dreamcast games to buy?

There is resident evil code veronica, power stone 1 and 2, grandia 2, some rpg about pirates that is very cool but I don't remember the name, the sonic games and apparently the Marvel vs capcom from this console is the least buggy of the other consoles. There is also Shenmue 1 ad 2, the ecco dolphin game, Darkstalkers and I can't remember more...

Yeah that is the name of the game. I always wanted to play my game but my neighbor was such an asshole and wouldn't let me.

How about Headhunter? I've seen videos and screenshots of it but I don't know if it's any good.

Some people I know said it was ok for the ps2 but that the magazines from that time said the game was mediocre.

Time Stalkers.
It's like pokemon but 10x better.
If you're getting a Dreamcast, that game is pretty essential imho.

Man this game was so horrible, it is no where near as good as pokemon.

Rez is pretty great, but its on ps2 and XBox Live so you may already have it.

Get Crazy Taxi, quite possible the best arcade game ever.

Crazy Taxi is insanely overrated.

Get the Power Stones, they're probably the best 4 player fighting games in existence (waaaaaaaay above Brawl in terms of sheer fun, imo).

If you're a fan of Berserk, you can get Sword of the Berserk:Gutts Rage. Also, Garou:Mark of the Wolves if you're into fighting games (although the default Dreamcast controller cuts like a knife through your thumbs).

Check some Dreamcast games at Amazon, and you should stumble into one of their lists, though most of them read like this thread so far.

Contrary to what people say, Sword of the Berserk is pretty subpar. I'm quite a Berserk fan, but, the english voices (I guess you can get it in japanese, though) are horrendous and well, the gameplay is pretty half-assed and outright horrendous at times (city levels, sword hits wall=sword fails, sword=23056239 feet long/wide, walls=10cm away from you)

The PS2 game was better, because there was no silly wall gimmick and the fighting was insanely better, and just felt like crowd control with a bigass sword. However, the level design was outright terrible and repetitive. :(

i used to have a ton of dreamcast games, but i lent them to a friend. I could've picked some and told you good titles... but eh, guess not.

What do you mean by the "sword hits wall=sword fails" I've looked at gameplay videos and seen nothing that resembles what you have said... maybe it's just me but could you please elaborate?

Basically, city levels are hell. Walls impair your sword and well, some city levels have way too many tight areas.

Either way, it's just not that good of a game.

Isn't Berserk the game where in the second level some guy is like "I'M THE MAYOR OF THIS TOWN... MY NAME IS... BALZSAK" or something ridiculous?

man is there any Dreamcast fanboy site out there because I really want to find out if there was anything really cool for Dreamcast that's still an exclusive to the system too

that and SEGA SATURN I know nothing about that system, I knew somebody who had one with Virtua Cop and stuff, and I remember our local video store had one and whatever that fighting game was (I want to say CODE NAME TENKA but that's not it it wasn't Tekken either) but since then it seems to have completely dropped off the radar, I've seen Dreamcast's, 3DO's, Turbografx-16's but not a single Sega Saturn for sale

Omikron : The Nomad Soul
Virtua On
Sonic Adventure 1
Powerstone 1 & 2
Shenmue 1
Crazy Taxi 1 & 2
are my top DC games.

Marvel VS Capcom 2 is sweet as well.

The wall stuff I got used to - learned to use the vertical swing instead, etc. The only thing that really bothered me was the "run towards the camera and dodge stuff that instantly kills you" part towards the end.

I've seen videos of the Ps2 one, but I never played it.

Sega DC has some great games, and even plays burnt CDs right out of the box! But DC emulation has come a long way if your system can handle it.

Exactly which is why I would rather buy the console and games to show my support for such a great console! It's a shame Sega dropped out of the hardware department! I would have loved to see what console Sega could come up with against Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo!

Beware. Only DCs version 0 and some(not all) version 1 do that.

Do check underneath your DC for the number before buying it, and take care when buying a version 1. It might not play burnt CDs afterall. I got fucked like that, but I managed to bring it back and get a 0. :)

How is it supporting the company if you are buying all old second hand games? They don't make money out of you buying shit off ebay.

If not, you can download a boot CD ISO online that's absolutely tiny iirc and use that; that's the way I always played burnt/foreign games on mine.

Also check out Cannon Spike! Cannon Spike is mad fun.

Uh, technically, if it doesn't run burnt games, it won't run a burnt boot iso.

At least it didn't for me. The logic here doesn't work.

Yes, well you are correct but the way I think of it. I would rather buy the game then have a backed up version! When I meant buy to support developers I meant there are games being made for the Dreamcast but by other developers...

EDIT: Cannon Spike added to list!

Ya know you might be right. I have no idea how it works, my brother did it a while ago.

Yea actually you probably are right, my statement doesn't make sense @_@

Here's the games I would recommend, some of them you can get pretty cheap from secondhand stores but you can always download the more pricey ones:

ChuChu Rocket
Crazy Taxi (i agree it's really overrated but seriously it's like $2 and decently fun)
Jet Grind Radio
Rez
Roommania #203 (there's an English faq online for this)
Shenmue
Sonic Adventure
Space Channel 5 (if you like music games)
Street Fighter III: Third Strike (if you have small hands the controller will KILL you in this game, though)
Typing of the Dead (you can usually find the keyboard on ebay for a decent price)
Worms (not played either on the dreamcast, but they're both good on the PC)

also because of this topic i came across this:

Quote
TYPING OF THE DATE
A typing game for the Dreamcast that teaches you typing skills while taking you through a dating game adventure -- will you find the love of your life? Anything's possible! Also included -- beyond the typing adventure -- are a number of minigames featuring the game's girls.

ahahahahaha

Power Stone and Virtual On are good DC games, I would say Phantasy Star Online but the servers closed from what I hear so mileage may vary...
