Title: FESTIVALS
Post by: Carrion Crow on June 08, 2009, 11:06:09 pm
[/caps]

Yeah this Thursday me and a few mates from Liverpool and Bristol are transporting down to Donnington for Download Festival 2009. The line up is pretty damn good this year and it's the first festival I have ever attended so this thread serves a dual purpose.

1. Talk about any gigs or fests you have planned this summer

2. Advise me on the dos and don'ts of festivaling it up.

I have purchased a dual layer tent and wellies. I have my beady eye on the weather forecast and a sleeping bag that I murdered an eskimo for - true story.

Here's the lineup for Download:

http://downloadfestival.co.uk/lineup/

I am so excited I made a topic! I might even do another post with my obscenely small nipples in again if you're lucky  :fogetcool:

I am most excited about Faith No More, Opeth, Lacuna Coil, Dream Theater and Therapy?

I am gonna go and see Limp Bizkit because it would be a shame not to. I will be baked the entire weekend.

yea the only thing worth it at download is seeing FNM
there is nothing really worth going to in my area this year and i'm not driving 14 hours to go to lolla (and its too expensive for me anyways) so I've got nothing going on as far as festivals go

wouldn't pay festival prices to see opeth (let alone DT)
would tho to see FNM so maybe thats the difference

a good tip is to go toilet before your favorite band so you are dying for a piss just before they start. also dont get too stoned or drunky

hey as an aside is this a new zealand specific thing or do people say this everywhere?

don't bother bringing deoderant unless you've got enough for everyone. you might want to prepare a neckbeard before hand so you don't get laughed out.

I actually really like DT. From album to album they are a different band so it's a bit of a mixed bag. My personal faves are Train of Thought which is super epic and Images and Words which is the cheesiest prog I own  :fogetcool: We're talking Stinking Bishop style cheesy.

Good lineup? lol

EDIT:  I'm retarded and didn't scroll down all the way so all I really saw was like Korn and Limp Bizkit and made an assumption.

I would see Limp Bizkit just for laughs, they were the shit when I was like 12/13.

I'm going to Leed's Festival this august

well suffice to say, I'm more excited about the smaller stages (such as lock-up) but I really can't wait for the festival atmosphere. What was the atmosphere like at download ed?

It was amazing, everyone was really friendly and it was good to just get shitfaced and hang out with random people.

I lost andy during Limp Bizkit cause I think he thought I had turned feral so I spent the rest of friday with just random people but that was a cool experience in itself. First time I have been in a circle pit and not though OMGz i'm gonna die. I actually enjoyed it a lot.

I found that vegitarian food was a lot better than the "burgers" and stuff they had on offer so it's worth looking into that.

We all took immodium to avoid crapping on festival toilets cause they were fucking awful.

I took my own tent home and stole stuff that people had left behind when it was all over. I don't believe in burning your tent its totally gay.

They were fucking amazing. I was pretty excited to see wes borland in real life and they didn't disappoint. They were better than korn by a long way.

Marilyn Manson was completely fucked off his tits. His band looked ashamed to be onstage with him. Rock AM Ring actually complained about how bad he was before he was at Download.

YES I TOLD YOU A REALLY BORING LIE  :blarg:

No wait...

Most of the sets are on youtube. The crowd reacted best to the limp because that is just super moshpit music. Wes Borland looked so awesome. He better not pack in Black Light Burns though since that is sooo gooooood. Download the album "Cruel Melody" if you have not heard it. It's a bit like a cross between NIN/Good Manson/LB

i think i am going to philly folk fest.

http://www.pfs.org/PFF_1_A.php

the only artist i know is iron and wine, but i have never actually heard them. huur huun tu play last year i think though, and i like them, so i hope someone like them (not just guy with an acoustic guitar) plays. its kind of a lot. almost 150 for tickets and camping, but i think my girlfriend is gonna pay for me, so thats not a problem, although i will feel real guilty

edit: also i think a limp bizkit concert could be ok. bands tend to be a lot of fun live even if they are lame on a studio record. if i was drunk and in a good mood i could have a blast at pretty much any concert i think

I'm not going, but FUCK ME Glastonbury has a stellar lineup this year. Radiohead (!), Bruce Springsteen (!!), Blur (!!!!!!!!!), Neil Young, Animal Collective, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Prodigy, British Sea Power, The Specials, Bat for Lashes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Peter Bjorn and John, Bon Iver, Jarvis Cocker, Echo and the Bunnymen...ok there's plenty of middle of the road shit, but the headliners alone are pretty spectacular.

I'm so pissed.  I went to VooDoo Fest a couple of years ago for a pretty ho-hum lineup (RatM was a redeeming factor).  They've announced this year's lineup and its freakin kickass.

http://www.nola.com/music/index.ssf/2009/06/eminem_kiss_are_slated_to_head.html

First of all, EMINEM.  Kiss is headlining if you're into that kind of thing (I hate them).  Jane's Addiction, Widespread Panic, THE FLAMING LIPS (unsurpassed live act from what I hear).  You've got Meat Puppets, The Black Keys, PARLIAMENT, and I wouldn't mind seeing Mates of State for nostalgic purposes.  There's also a few other bands I've heard mentioned around here.  Of course, this is all supplemented by lots of New Orleans traditional and jazz music on various stages.

I'm a pretty eclectic listener, so this amalgam of genres and bands is pretty cool to see.  I thought the Fest was forever doomed to Lil Wayne and Fallout Boy, but apparently someone has breathed new life into it.

Got home from Arvikafestivalen (http://www.arvikafestivalen.se) just a few days ago. The festival isn't that huge (~20000 visitors) but the music and the audience is a weird mix of people who enjoy both synth/ebm, metal and indie so it's all good! Wicked line-up if you ask me. Favorite bands included:

Nine Inch Nails
Depeche Mode
Mind.in.a.box
Opeth
Fleet Foxes
Röyksopp
The Mars Volta
Anna Ternheim

And a few others. This is my third time at this festival and I'll probably be going there again next year! Oh and also, the best part of the whole festival was probably this dude walking around with a t-shirt that contained Budweiser's logo, but instead of saying "Budweiser - King of beers" or whatever it said "Bukowski - king of poets". That was rad as hell.
