Title: The Great GW Hardware Poll
Post by: Carrion Crow on June 09, 2009, 01:48:16 am
Here's a poll although I expect British people to vote in this one because it doesn't involve going to the polling station.  â€‹ Current affairs.

I didn't get a console until I had a PS1 when I went to high school in 1998. It was on that machine I first played metal gear solid, FF7 and Gran Turismo and thus I became a pasty gamer and no longer lived to my potential.

In years past I have acquired many gaming devices, some work. Some have been thrown down the stairs at mum and dad in a tantrum but throughout my 22 years I have owned a fair amount! Consider this thread a public inventory. I guess it might seem to some as a penis measuring contest but at the same time you've obviously stayed in and invested time with your games machines thus does that make you better, REALLY? This is strictly matter of interest, perhaps a bit of nostalgia thrown in there.

I only realised the other day that I am a closet massive Sony fanboy when my dad gave me that PSP he's had hidden all this time and I now pretty much have them all, minus daft things like the Playstation Pocket. I would love a 360 but I made a choice and I don't really have the time or money to buy another big console, given the degree.

Tick as many as you like, if I have missed any mainstream consoles then bitch and I will add it at the bottom.

PS2, DS, Gameboy (the brick) and a Genesis  and a Gamegear that I think I used once (was given to me by my cousin)
these were all free except for the DS which I bought on ebay and  I split the cost for the PS2 with my brother.

That's a pretty good point as well. If you can remember the amount you've spent on your consoles we could see who is the most economical gamer. Or the most spoiled (my gramps funded my PS3 :P)

Also thanks to chef for showing his aptitude for ticking boxes :ganja:

The last one is kind of odd, because I use my PC the most for gaming, but I also own several other consoles.  So I didn't check that one.

yea same.  Back when the console I had was in the current generation I still prefered to do my gaming on the computer, aside from the ones that were obviously for the PS2 only.  Still prefer that over anything else (console gaming just has never had a lasting appeal for me in that respect other than a few games every now and then that I'd want to play that aren't released from anything else other than for console)

The reason its a closed question and not "I'm a PC GAMAR" is because most of you own PCs, that's a given!

Edit: You forgot the Turbo Grafx 16, 3DO, Neo Geo, and CD-i.
I changed the option for Neo Geo to include the original. The others either fall under older hardware or other.

The only console that I own which I play often is my PS3. I have a few that collect dust. A PS1, PS2, and Gamecube. All of my older consoles/handhelds have been sold or thrown out. They were: Intellivision, Sega Master System, Nintendo, Gameboy, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, and Sega Game Gear.

I had a DS Lite, but I've gave it to my step sister when she wasn't doing too well. She has a Wii too, but I never play it.

I used to regret having bought a PS3 but my library has slowly grown and this year/the next are looking really good. Playing through uncharted at the moment and thas some goooooood sheeeet.

I only bought my PS2 in 2008. It's shocking pink.

My gameboy colour was stolen from my sister who bought one to make me jealous when I was 10 and she had more money but soon realised she had no interest in games and just left it on a shelf. My copy of pokemon was stolen from a friend of a friend. I had no part in the thievery, I just got given it when my friend was bored saying "it's fucking gay anyway!". I was like "yeah, terrible... so... addictively.... terrible"

I saved every day for like... a year to get my PS1 in 1998 and that was probably the best day taking it out of the box and playing GT. I've disassembled it about 100 times to add blu tack in different places to make it work, but with the addition of the PSP I think I can safely retire it now : )

Owning a PC and gaming on PC are different things. So you should change the last option "Gaming PC" or something. Just my opinion though.

Nowadays I only own PS3 and PS2 but I have also owned Wii, Playstation, SNES, Gamecube and Dreamcast.

I'm really glad that I went with PS3 instead of 360. 360 is pretty much equally good in my books but I do slightly prefer PS3's exclusives. I just wish it had more cool arcade games like 360 does.

Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PS2, Xbox, GameCube, PS1, Dreamcast, DS(normal fat one), PSP, GBASP and if you want to count it, an iPhone.
Also own a Gameboy, but the screen on it is sort of broke, I am pretty sure I also have a SNES, NES, Sega Mega Drive, Amiga 500, Commadore 64, Atari 2600 and another console which I THINK is an Amiga CD of some sort. But all these ones are boxed up somewhere or other and I haven't seen them for a good few years.

EDIT: Also, own a "gaming PC", if you want to some how differentiate if from a normal PC.

My very first console was a Nintendo 64, and before that I would play on my brother's SNES and NES. Right now I have : SNES, NES, Nintendo 64, Xbox 360, Wii, Gameboy Advance, PS1, and that's it.

The thing is, most Xbox 360 games are on the PC, and you can get a 360 controller to play them.  I love being able to do that.

Needs more Sega Saturn, imo.

Also I barely play games anymore but I'm hanging onto my systems as I don't really see the need to sell them.

I got the 8-bit NES when I was about six years old. That night I played Super Mario Bros. until four in the morning. It is pretty much the sweetest console in history and I never wanted to let go of my first console. A few years later I got the SNES and threw my NES in the garbage chute. It was even sweeter and cooler than ever before and I had it for about five years before I bought a used PSX and N64 just to catch up on gaming. Turned out the PSX ruled and the N64 sucked. What games did the N64 have? Golden Eye. Wow that's cool if you're a huge James Bond fan.

Fast-forward a few years and I get tricked into buying the DS. I wish I could find it and use it as a door stop. What score would I give it? ZERO out of a million.

Anyway just recently I bought the 360. Now it feels like the majority of games are stupid as hell and I've returned like 90% of every modern game I've ever bought because I was disappointed, but it feels like the 360 is the only console that has decent games without being expensive as shit.

I piss on consoles. I piss on games.

P.S. I also had a Game Boy, the clunky version. How much did it rule? Infinitely. Link's Awakening, Pokémon, Final Fantasy Legend and Mario Gallery were all super duper good games.

Did anyone have the Virtual Boy?  That thing was fun for about one hour.  And I think that hour permanently fucked my vision somehow.  I remember peeling my face from it and feeling cross-eyed for a long time.  Luckily I pawned the thing off to some sucker.

Yeah, I'm pretty disappointed in my DS.  It's the old brick one.  There were never any firmware upgrades, yet the DSi gets to do all this cool shit.  Way to take care of your original buyers, Nintendo.

However, I am glad I have the DS because Scribblenauts is coming out.  I think that alone will make me a proud DS owner.  Also Phoenix Wright.

I received the Nes, Genesis and Snes consoles as gifts. One of the highlights was beating Robowarrior on the NES. (My dad had to help me with one of the bosses. I was so young, I was jumping up and down like an idiot when we finally beat him. We also played Super Mario Brothers on the SNES on the weekends.) When I turned 14 and went to work, I bought a Playstation with my first full paycheck because I wanted to play FF7. I had enough for the game and the system, but not a memory card - so I got very good at playing the early part of the game that weekend and got a memory card the next saturday...

I got a ps2 the first week they came out, had to get it as a package deal so I ended up paying more and getting a couple useless games in the mix.

My Ps2, being one of the early ones, was prone to laser problems. A couple of years later, and after cleaning the lens a few too many times so I could play my games, I bought a used Xbox. I was pretty impressed with it, and decided to get a 360.

I waited for a while until the first couple of generations with the "I overheat and die" problem were out of the way. I bought Oblivion the same day as my 360. Later, I had to buy another one because I burned the first one out using it as a dvd player. (I'd fall alseep, the dvd would spin all night...the tv was off. I didn't realize - go to work, come home, eat dinner, turn on the tv... had the thing set up on carpet, like a dumbass...left it on all weekend once because I turned the controller off instead of the console, etc). During the year and a half my 360 was dead, I got bored so I bought a sega cd and Snatcher. I also bought a Dreamcast and Garou:Mark of the Wolves. I don't really want to admit what I paid for either of those games at the time...

I don't really play that many games anymore. I have to dust off the 360 each time I finally decide to get another game for it. I only have 8, but I've rented at least half that again. Games just don't take as long to beat as they used to - and it feels kind of stupid to spend 50-60 bucks for ten hours of sitting in a dark room and twiddling my thumbs. I generally evaluate game purchases on how many times I think I'll replay something. Fallout 3 was kind of a mis-step in that department. I bought it new because I expected to play through it as many times as I did 1 & 2, but either the experience wasn't as good or I've just gotten older because once was enough.

My wife got a PS3 and I don't really care much for the games except for maybe a couple.

Mostly what I like about it is the multimedia capabilities. Bluray is nice and all that, the dvd upscaling is awesome, and being able to stream stuff from my computer wirelessly and use the web browser for online streaming/managing torrents on the pc is probably the best thing about it to me cuz I don't have cable.

Yeah this is mostly why I am not beating myself up over spending so much money on a console. I use my 360 more as a multimedia station than anything so in that regard it is probably my most used household item. Like you just need to hook it up to your computer via WLAN and to a sweet audio system via your TV and you've pretty much got the perfect media setup.

After I got my PS3 my dad purposefully bought a 40" HD set so he could watch movies off it and he has not looked back. I leave it at home during termtime so he gets just as much use out of it as I do when I am home and I play games but the whole streaming thing is such a wonderful added bonus.

DivX movies scale so nicely too, and the fact they have included all the codecs to play them is great.

One thing that would be nice would be mp4 playback (digital camera video). We got a new one that does 720p video recording but it can't be played back on the PS3 via usb without re-encoding so it has to be watched with quicktime on the PC which is a bit lame.

I wish there was a homebrew scene on the PS3 like the PSP's.

Running emulators on that thing without all the linux bullshit would be great, so would software capable of running unsupported media formats.

I guess trying to hack a PSP is a little less of an investment than hacking a PS3, say you brick it. They have probably been a lot more careful with this model given that all previous sony gaming consoles, handheld or not, have been totally hackable.

Where is the virtual boy option?

I used to pride myself on having EVERY nintendo system ever.

NES, Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, SNES, Virtual Boy, N64, GameCube, etc.

I never had a Game Boy Advance SP, or a Game Boy Micro, or actually a lot of other things,. still cool though

yeah god damn if it's not annoying how few media formats the 360 and PS3 support. I mean it's great that they offer media streaming but it's annoying that they limit it to like AVIs encoded with DivX and like nothing else.

I currently own, all of the gameboys except the chunky grey one which used like 4 AA batteries, PSP, PS2 and Xbox 360. The first console I ever had was the Sega Megadrive which I got for like £20, but this was when I was 15 yrs old, which was only 4 years ago, that got me into gaming and other gaming consoles.

My parents weren't so big on me spending money on game consoles because they were worried that my grades would drop but they didn't and eventually got used to it!
