TURBINE® ANNOUNCES DUNGEONS & DRAGONS ONLINE®: EBERRON UNLIMITED™
Free Digital Upgrade Introduces Unlimited Free Play and Raises Level Cap; Beta Begins Today

WESTWOOD, MA – June 9, 2009 – Turbine, Inc. announced today the start of the Beta program for Dungeons & Dragons Online®: Eberron Unlimited™ (DDO Unlimited), a free digital upgrade for Dungeons & Dragons Online®: Stormreach™. DDO Unlimited will raise the level cap and add major new content, as well as make the game free to play for everyone. The new DDO Unlimited delivers heart-pounding game play featuring the industry’s best combat system, a massive world with state-of-the-art graphics and gameplay, and a rich set of features that until now could only be found only in premium subscription-based MMOs. Launching later this summer, DDO Unlimited will introduce an innovative new pricing model that allows players to download and play for free, purchasing adventure packs, items, and account services a la carte from the new DDO Store, or to subscribe to get unlimited access to all of the game’s content. Players interested in getting a sneak peak of the new DDO Unlimited can sign up for a chance to participate in the Beta program at http://www.ddo.com.

“Our team has spent years crafting DDO Unlimited into a powerhouse experience featuring cutting-edge graphics, a kick-ass combat system, high level content, and cutting-edge social tools. Today marks a major milestone as we prepare to launch the world’s most exciting free MMO,” said Kate Paiz, Senior Producer.

“Turbine is blazing a new trail with an innovative new pricing structure that will deliver a new era of choice for the growing market of online gamers, and we are very excited to invite players to work with us in the DDO Unlimited Beta program as we redefine how people play and pay for MMOs,” added Fernando Paiz, Executive Producer.

DDO Unlimited delivers the best combat of any MMO and the most heart-pounding action this side of a keyboard, plus a lot more!

Brand New Content & Features – DDO Unlimited will deliver a new class, increase the level cap, introduce new adventure packs including a new 12-player raid, major combat improvements and more!

The Fiercest Combat – DDO Unlimited features an extraordinary and heart stopping combat experience that requires players to fully engage in the battle by relying on their wits and reflexes in real time. No more clicking skills and watching the action from the sideline.

Mind-blowing Visuals – Explore a vast and dangerous online world that features the most advanced graphics in the industry and is stuffed with the legendary monsters, glorious treasures, devious traps, mind-bending puzzles and endless adventures from the world’s best known RPG.

Full-featured MMO – Experience sophisticated systems found only in the best games including auctions, arena death matches (Player versus Player), NPC hirelings, gambling, crafting, and powerful social tools for finding a group, forming a guild or planning an epic raid!

Easier Than Ever! – DDO Unlimited gets you playing in minutes instead of hours, using new proprietary Turbine technology. Creating a new character is incredibly simple with guides and templates that speed you through the process. Features an all-new new player experience that gives gamers their first taste of excitement quickly while teaching them how to play solo or with a group of fellow adventurers.

I happened upon this by accident. An interesting development to say the least. DDO had one of the more interesting combat systems for an MMO (Opting more an action RPG approach), and is quite a bit different from the average MMORPG these days.

I think I'll give this game another shot now that it's F2P. My biggest complaint when playing the trial was the lack of players; but now that it's F2P, there should be a pretty good amount of people running around... There's just one thing I'm a bit wary about. Does this game come bundled with that piece of crap software "Gameguard"? I can't remember too well.

Since it's F2P... no? Most likely not, just pay for the account and there you go.

DDO is going F2P now? Awesome, been wanting to play this for a bit but never really looked at it, 'cause I don't really play MMO's that are P2P much, however now it's going free I'm gonna play it, most likely as a Human Fighter which is my fave DnD Combo as it's easy to play haha

Sure, you just have to spend real money at a fake store if you want the good stuff.
Micropayments.

The gear is here. Get to the in-game DDO Store, and gear up with anything from healing potions for where it hurts, to massive cans of kick-ass to deal some hurt of your own. Cash in the Turbine Points you’ve earned while playing or buy them outright. Get the gear you’ve got to have to bring every creepy, crawly, and loathsome beast to its knees, tentacles, or trailing wisps of ectoplasm. Because you don’t want to go down in the dungeon without protection.

Looks like the points for the store are both ingame and cashing in real money.

I hate mmo's which have those ingame stores where you have to spend a ton just to be at an equal level with everyone else who pays for junk.... I played this game for a few months and had no problem paying the £10.00 a month fee for total access to everything. Now I can guarantee most people will spend much more than that gearing themselves up with store bought items.

Free version players are going to have limited auctions, limited mail, limited gold storage, and limited chat.
Oops, looks like you can't buy the Sword of God Killing +5 because you can only hold 1000 gold.  Oops.

Who needs a Sword of God Slaying + 5? All I need is two Longswords, 1 with Fire and 1 with Ice. Plus I think 1000 gold is a little TOO limiting to be honest.

Plus Limited Auctions, Mail and Chat don't really bother me, I never really spend much time communicating, and I'm more likely to spend more time in the dungeons than in Stormreach anyway, I'll take slaying Kobolds and Mindflayers and whatever else I find down there than standing in town shouting 'LFG' and 'Buying {Insert item here}' all the time.

Doesn't getting a firey weapon cost like 1300 gold in DnD?
I'm not sure that limit is the best idea...

Costs a fair bit more for the ones that I created - I think it was atleast or around 40k or around that for each sword, but I think 1300 is about the right cost for a basic fire weapon.

Not open to Wurope? :O Damn... well hopefully they'll think about making it a future release for Europe, as it says on the DDO Europe site. However, looks like I'll have to stick to randomly creating charas using the books... ohwell, atleast I have more freedom over my choices.

Jesus, you can still just subscribe as usual and get full access. All this is really doing is letting you play for free for as long as you want, or just buy what you want instead of paying a lump monthly fee. You can even use an ingame point system to buy shop items, and the shop items aren't the best gear available, mostly just convienience items. The monthly fee is still just $15 bucks, and that gets you access to everything. While this isn't QUITE full free to play, it's a lot more than just a trial.

People really will bitch about anything!

Interesting, I have been wanting to check this game out for some time now. I'll wait until the open beta, or the full game in general comes out though(I never had any luck with trying to get into closed betas...)

It's basically an expansion pack, and they're beta-ing it.

Also I think DDO is like four years old at this point, I vaguely remembering playing the stress test or oben beta just before it came out several years ago.

I might give this a try. It looked interesting but I've never enjoyed the prospect of sinking money into a time-sink.
