Hey guys, hopefully there's some fellow bird-brains out there that can help me with this.
I've got quite an impressive aviary at my house that's becomming increasingly less impressive. It's home to over a hundred birds and it's quite a large enclosure, inevitably a few disappear everynow and then. This is usually more than balanced out by the number of succesful hatchings, so I'm not too worried.
Yesterday though, I realised two of my cockatiels were missing. I'm not sure how long they've been gone for, but they're really not the type to escape. I then did a quick look around and quite a few of the birds are missing, I've been busy with exams so while I still go in and looks after them / interact with them, I haven't been paying quite as much attention as I usually do.
It's just comming into winter down here in New Zealand, and while this has never happened before I thought this might have something to do with it, they're flying south for the winter or something (I don't clip ANY of by birds wings). I checked the fencing and wiring just now and there's a few gaps but not big enough for anything that would pose a threat to get in. The only other animal that has access would be my cat, but everyone here including the cat and the birds are strictly vegan, so that's not an issue.
Do you think someone is stealing my birds? There's only a swing door and a sliding lock to get in. My most expensive birds are still in there though. I think this is probably something the birds themselves are doing, any ideas?

what kind of birds you got and why do you have over a hundred of them?

What? I've got quite a range, aside from the aviary I have a small dove box and a small chicken coop (I used to have some chickens before I became fully vegan, we still have three of them).
Birds are fascinating and are great companions, and every so often I sell some as pets for quite a decent and relatively passive income. I don't sell any of the quail unless I know the buyer fairly well, mostly because they're not really worth it and also because someone might be farming them or something (even though they're not really the eating type).
Thanks for the curiosity I guess...?

Heh, vegan cat. Even domesticated animals have a wild side, so I really wouldn't put it past a cat to nab a couple of birds once in awhile. At any rate, yeah, it's likely that they flew off.
It's cool that you have an aviary though! I myself always wanted an African Grey, but they're so expensive!

ugh someone lock this this was dumb. you can't have a vegan cat, cats need meat. the cat was eating the birds and had been since i got it, but i didn't realise because i thought it was vegan.
