The harddrive in my ibook g4 has broken big time and i'm finding it hard finding info on replacing it. does anyone know if it's possible or not and anything else about it? is it a specific type of hard drive or is it the same as any laptop HD?

Same as any HDD. Good thing about HDDs is that they are coming down in price because SSDs are the new trend so you should have no trouble replacing it given that you don't have one of those new unibody terrors.

I think those g4 notebook hdds are the old ultra ata/100 ones instead of sata interface that the new notebooks use so keep that in mind when you're buying one.
I also remember that when I replaced my powerbook G4 harddrive with a faster one, not only was it a massive pain in the ass having to take the thing apart to replace the drive, it ran a whole hell of a lot hotter. But that may have been a powerbook thing because the aluminum case doubled as a big heatsink/griddle.

I checked ifixit and it looks like you have to open the thing up(pop the keyboard and palmrest off) to replace the drive. Have fun with that.

i work at a repair shoppe for mac stuff. You need a 2.5" ata. I'd order one online from newegg or something.
Installation is tedious but totally doable. There are basically a zillion screws. Find a good guide and just give it a shot, give yourself a good hour to work at it and keep organized... Any shop will likely charge an hour of labor or more which gets expensive.
