Title: Help Removing Corrupt Binary File [fixed]
Post by: Boulvae on June 23, 2009, 07:02:38 pm
So I was downloading an RPG Maker game from SegNin (it was a Rapidshare download) and after it was finished I ran the file and a black window popped up for about a few seconds then closed doing absolutely nothing. So I preceded to delete the file but then it said, "Cannot delete MSetup.exe: It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again."

I restarted and tried to delete the file again and it said the same thing, then I checked the file and it is apparently empty and damaged. The mistake I made was running the .exe file before checking, but now I don't know how to get rid of it. There was no viruses or anything it's just a waste of space that I can't get rid of. I can't even move it from the desktop.

How can i get rid of it?

Try booting into safe mode and deleting it

Try removing all permissions from it (in file properties, security tab) then restart and give full permissions to "everyone"so you can delete it.

Won't give me the option when I press F8 when starting up, and it did once but only because of a hard reset. And I can't use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode when it does.

And there is no Security tab when I select file properties for it.

do you have a linux live disk lying around anywhere? you can use that. or you can put your hard drive in another computer and boot from it's hard drive to delete it.

Download and burn an ubuntu bootable live cd, mount your hard drive and delete the file

You don't need to install linux or anything, it'll run off the disc

If you don't know what's using the file and can't get into safe mode, this might be the best option. other than that you could do a trial-and-error session with the task manager and try shutting down processes and attempting to delete the file

i've had this happen a couple times where an empty file would become undeletable, it seemed to be just an error on the harddrive. maybe try a few chkdisk or fdisk type programs. if it's actually running somehow there's a way to enable shadow volume services and shadow delete it or something i don't recall completely, i'm not going to look it up because i doubt it's the case.

a format always erased the file for me so maybe you can manually change the MBR tables or whatever to clear those sectors for writing again

You can try 'Unlocker' which can be found here: http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

Sorry, I should've added that you need to have "use simple file sharing" unchecked in "tools\folder options\view"  in windows explorer to see that tab.

How unfortunate that you didn't take the bait and try
manually change the MBR tables or whatever to clear those sectors for writing again
instead.

Rapidshare link?

Must be the Ultimate Mortal Kombat - Vendetta game that was requested recently.

Assuming that's the game, I don't know what the problem could be, as it works fine on my comp:

Then again, as you can see from the screenshots, it's a Japanese, heavily-modified, hack of RPGMaker.
And it's only a demo.

So, maybe that's the problem.  :fogetshrug:
