I'm watching Oz.

I watched it all a couple of years ago, some seasons drag a bit but overall it's really good. But if you've only seen two episodes, it's going to get a lot better. I didn't like the beginning that much myself, I couldn't really get into it until around ep4 or so.
I don't really have anything else to add. It's like with The Wire (which I still need to see), only thing anybody ever has to say about it is "it's really good!!!!!".

They seem interesting enough. People that have been to prison often got some pretty interesting stories to tell and I'm sure a show about the prison system and the people in it would be interesting.

prisons are really interesting considering that there's a huge amount of people living in them and they are pretty much what the state uses to keep people from stepping out of line

I first watched Oz at an age that my parents probably wouldn't be happy knowing I watched it at, so I don't remember much about the show besides the episode where the guy smears his shit all over the walls in solitary confinement, and Adebisi's sweet miniature hat.
I can't really fault you for having poor expectations of it, though. When most people hear "prison drama" they immediately think of PRISON BREAK, which was basically anime for white people.

The only guy I remember clearly is the guy in the weal chair (narrator guy) who near the end (or at the end?) dies. And one guy who snapped another guy's neck while giving him head and one dude who tried to escape but hit the water system which is ironically the most light hearted episode I have seen, the one legit dude (as far as legit goes) in the whole damn prison, and two female cops who get it on with two of the prisoners with both of said prisoners getting killed shortly afterwards. Oh, and bald guy in the intro theme.
One of those shows I watched at night when I can't sleep at all.

This show is actually a bit of a mess. I didn't notice it so much at first, aside from plotlines moving really fast and not developing that much, but things aren't very consistent or realistic (and if I'm watching a prison show, I'd kind of like them to be), the Augustus Hill monologues are mostly crappy and shallow, and it's a little cheesey aside from that.
It's still prison and feels very WHOAH anything can happen so it's entertaining but it's not really very serious. The set up is too contrived.
