man, this is from when the mainsite was thriving.  Articles were posted daily, the comments were working, and people actually looked at it for more than ten seconds at a time.

Also I had my stupid Asuka avatar.

You guys are tarded. We're going to have a great mainsite and according to drule "It is gonna be super duper cool and GW is going to be all active again, believe you me!" So stop wallowing in the death of old GW and let's make some goddamn games.

By the way, I hear you're a wookie.

I miss adding games/resources to the old GW. It was a lot of fun.

Why did we ever even need a new main site? Why couldn't GW 5 just have been fixed?

Well GW6 (I think?) was supposed to be a beefed up version and it was looking REALLY great. People were actually looking forward to it. But then a few collective minds decided to replace GW with a blog before GZ attempted some form of an actual site. Now we're back to a blog.

Well I'd still like to see the new site because I'm sure they busted ass working on it, but I definitely wouldn't mind seeing something like old GW5 sometime again. But as was suggested in the other thread, I think we should center ourselves around a new program. What do the dev guys have to say?

I'd say Indie Game Maker if it wasn't for the fact that it is so damn user-unfriendly.

I'm stuck in the past with Rm2k3, but that's okay because I am unambitious.  Wasn't the last attempt targetted at the "Indie" game crowd?  I agree that maybe it was to vague to be successful.  Maybe GW could make themselves as the site targetting people wanting to transition from RPG Maker to other slightly more complex tools like Lite-C, Game Maker, Java and XNA/C# Express.

It was incompatible with the forums and everyone just thought the mainsite needed a "fresh new look". I personally would've been okay even if the main page was still untouched and stuck back at the roller coaster gold era, but it's not my choice to make. I really don't think this should turn into another layout debate.

Really, all that for a fresh new look? Heh, amazing that that would kill a community.

Game Maker would be the easiest to make resources and articles for, which would draw more people in. For straight-up programming there's a smaller crowd, and half of us can't even program for shit so a focus on that is probably synonymous to whacking foget in the head repeatedly with a cricket bat. Way back when I started a game making club in high school, we didn't have a programmer so we decided to use rpg maker (illegalities aside), and when a real programmer did show up he pretty much keeled the club dead. Too much work for high school kids. Unless someone can program a basic layout that people today can copy/paste and maybe *manipulate* to make their own games, I don't think programming from scratch is a good turn for the community.

But I really don't know what the hell I'm talking about because I haven't been in the development forums for a really long time.
Title: Back when Gaming World used to shine
Post by: fatty on July 10, 2009, 05:50:25 pm
A fresh new look would actually help attract a different kind of crowd that wasn't "look at m rpg maker gaem screenshots, i am 24,7% completed it but i still need story writers artists musicians and mayB some money. thenks!"

Which I suppose was the sentiment before, but I was just noting that in retrospect that would be preferable to what we currently have.

Also, no to XNA. I looked at a few of the projects, and they scare the *shit* out of me.

Strap on your breastplate and get your headgear because this game is full of
non-stop RPG action!.. Embark on a great journey working for a mercenary
group..errr..sound familiar? If not play the first ten
minutes of the game and it will. Land of Dreams works off of a lot of different
Final Fantasy elements and is definitely worth the download, the
time, and the effort.

Sound wise this game is spectacular, from the rusty metal sound of opening doors to the
fantastic music in the background . Although
many of songs are taken from the Final Fantasy series, they have been
strategically placed along the game blending in nicely. Right from the
start this games music impressed me with the Vivi tune from Final fantasy IV.
(of course in the legendary MIDI form!) The final fantasy VIII battle theme
was the one chosen for Land of Dreams. As good as the theme is it
is wearing down, I feel a better choice of battle music would have
added to the battle experience. Happy music in happy towns, dark music
in dark towns and caves, it all matches up.

Gameplay, perhaps the biggest part of this game, choices to almost anything you do. Not known
if these choices have a significant effect on the storyline, it just
gives you that good old RPG feeling, actually being able to take control
of your character and not just having the actions taken for you. Ninjas
thieves, mercenarys, healers, this game has the typical group of all RPGs
but unlike some they are actually well thought out and have a good amount of depth and detail to their lives.
Although a big disappointment was not being able to choose the characters names which is
one huge RPG element most cant stand not having. But countering that comes
things like the active time bar.. thats right people an active time bar! A huge
hit in my books, makes the games battle system twice as fun, as a turn
based game. Also you will notice a great amount of different items and weapons in the shops
with plenty of "Tova" (money) to buy it all, so your fighter can be stacked!
Also a game that you actually have to train to advance further not just hope to do through at level one..

Unfortunately gameplay wise, at times it can be a
little choppy and you will find you have magically appeared five or so
steps ahead of where you were going causing slight disruptions and with
any luck engaging battles that could have been avoided. (note: that was sarcasm)As for the game speed it runs at a steady pace, only at times
you may get the feeling you are moving a little faster then the normal
but it was nothing serious enough to affect the game. Length.. bring your blankets,
tents, food supply, and anything else you need to survive for the next
couple of days because this game is a good length, and it should be for
30MB!!!!!

For graphics its definitely about the same as what your SNES was putting out.
Detailing in everything is good, no lack of anything that would disrupt
the game at all. Designed nicely, with the snow to the north and the
green grass to the south (wow the genius in development that handled
that part) Towns are nicely set up, giving off a nice fantasy theme. You
know the world that is constructed entirely of wood but yet has flying
airships? The character design is also good. I dont know what it is with
me and blue hair but I like it, and it makes the game more fun.

Well Lasting appeal is an obvious success for the creators, it has hours of game time
and requires lots of training and its not possible to just slide through the game with
little to no effort. Land of Dreams was nothing short of greatness and I feel
it deserves a great mark.. I give this game a 95/100. Yes, I know thats
high but I am a sucker for an RPG, and this is a damn good RPG!!

Look at these eerie predictions some GWers made years ago...

Quote
The Future of GW:

So, what's in store for GW? No one knows for sure, but we can all make predictions. Here are what some Staff and Mods think about the future of GW.

Xanqui: As GW continues to exist, new Internet technology will allow Bart to transform this community into a very interactive, fun place. This will spark interest in many people, and members will become more active. The staff population will increase accordingly, preventing an overthrow by the members.

Obviously, this means more jackasses and spammers, but with the new AI technology, eliminating spam will be as simple as pressing a "Remove all spam" button. Banning will be more frequent as well, but in general, the people will be nice.

As for the community itself, I don't think it has long to go before it's something completely different. With people showing more interest in things other than games, such as literature (or movies?), GamingWorld will be more like MediaWorld, only it probably won't be changing its name. Soon, the geeks shall inherit the Earth, and many of us will have GamingWorld to turn to when we need a break from life.

Whether or not this happens doesn't matter. What matters most is that we stick together, even if the site does go down some day. Many people I've known here are more than just chat buddies; they are my friends. I hope to continue knowing them for years to come.

MasterDarkNinja: Once Rm2k/Rm2k3/otherRm#k#'s made in the future end up dying out later on GW will end up having a repeat of the "GW is dying period" that happened when Alexander and Moriason left. The only way that it wouldn't happen is if a different maker took over as the main choice of makers used around here.

Game Maker users will outnumber rm2k/rm2k3 users since so many people have been quitting rm2k/rm2k3 and going over to Game Maker (I myself have done so already) which could change the site a lot in the future (mainly the content on the mainsite).

In one or two or possibly even three more years GW6 will come.

Kuro: Lately, GW has been getting bigger and bigger. Its so massive, I think eventually, Bart will go mad with power and decide to turn it into something like ign.com!!!

j/k... seriously, GW is just going to grow and grow. More and more talented game creators are showing up in the ranks, and this only going to make GW even bigger, not only as a website, but as a community. Yeah... A few years from now, I'll be able to say, "I was there when GW entered a new age, and I'm damn proud of it. God bless.

I'm impressed with how close Xanqui actually was with his prediction of GW becoming "media" world... And MDN was spot on with the Rm2k/3 maker dying out prediction as well.

and... OH... MY... LOOK WHAT I JUST CAME ACROSS!

Wow it's hard to believe how many forums there used to be. There was literally a forum for EVERYTHING. It takes almost 3 scrolls of the mouse to get to the bottom of the page. It's kind of fun that nostalgia makes pretty much anything better than it used to be. Then again I can't say I had less fun at GW a few years back; it's just that people and their hobbies change. I know I enjoyed GW a lot back then, but I can't say that I would enjoy that kind of community being the way I am nowadays. I don't miss the old GW a lot tbh, I just miss a lot of old members, wherever they are. :(

Ugh, Phylomortis was the worst piece of shit ever uploaded to GW.
It... actually, really really was. A mesh of ugly horribly ripped graphics from 25 different games, dialog using huge words that made NO sense just so RPG Advocate would look smart, a badly fucked up battle system which killed you within 5 seconds and made you restart at the beginning of the game, etc.

RPG Advocate was an enormous douche too. He tried a shitty sequel in RMXP, still using ugly as fuck ripped SNES graphics that were stretched to fit RMXP's bigger resolution. When everybody told him it actually looked pretty bad, he flipped out and told us all that we were wrong because he was a professional and knew what he was doing. And also because he translated Rm2k3, which must have been phenomenally hard with an almost identical RPG Maker 2000 already translated as a guide, as well as Babelfish.

God this thread is so nostalgic I can't believe it.

I miss the poll forum dearly. It needs to come back. Remember topic of the week?

EDIT:

Wow it's hard to believe how many forums there used to be. There was literally a forum for EVERYTHING. It takes almost 3 scrolls of the mouse to get to the bottom of the page. A forum for every GCS, forums for big projects (Channel Changer anyone), a forum for general programming, one for internet programming, and... crap shack....

I can fucking remember that, and I must say I thought the forum was awesome back then. Though that was like 3+ years ago now. . .

I think I miss the old days.

I use to visit that old site when I was over at rpgnet I think it was called, came here to check out tutorials and grab some resources.. hated the forums when I would visit though, it was always full of mean people saying the worst things about everything. Either the people have changed here or I have!
GW started out basically as the Ned Flanders of RPG Maker websites. Everyone was nice, and quite a few people left their communities to post at GW because of that. For a few years, GW did become a pretty mean place though. The reputation we earned as a nasty community with many spiteful assholes was really quite justified and deserved.

GW's cool again though. We've all gotten older and mellowed out a bit, so we're mostly all good chums again.

If you're about to die of old age, then I'm already in the coffin.

I used to just like browsing the main site for random games and what not. My peak Rpgmaker period I guess. The Most Stupidest Game Ever was one of the games I really remembered and found later on thanks to Segnin. That site was the shit back then, if it were still up I think Coaster Gold would have been still staring me in the face.

Edit - Found a review I wrote as a guest.. Haha man I was an idiot. I could spell but that was about it. This is great looking through it all again and finding this.
