Title: Max Payne 3
Post by: Killer Wolf on July 14, 2009, 07:57:34 pm
I was doing some random searches and saw some info about this for the first time.

http://www.rockstargames.com/maxpayne3/index2.php
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Payne_3

They're moving it to Brazil, Max is older and "more world weary", and from the screen shots it looks like the camera perspective will be like almost every other third person shooter out there now. The graphics and day light setting remind me of the demo mission I played of Splinter Cell Double Agent, and it is hard to tell from static screens (that might just be pre-rendered advertising images unrelated to the final game's look) but it seems like the game is going to feel completely different.

I'm also curious as to how they'll pull off some of the flashier moves (if the older Max is still able to pull them off in the story), since the camera angle seems skewed towards the typical "wall cover/return fire" approach, as opposed to the "lead tornado" setup from the first two games. The camera moves in the original games weren't too jarring because the view was pulled back a bit further from the character to begin with. This new camera placement leads to a slight feeling of claustrophobia, which is kind of ironic considering how open the environment looks at first blush.

In the first two, the city, specifically when it falls into Max's definition of "Noir York" is a big supporting character in and of itself. Also, it appears to have neither Remedy or Sam Lake (the creator) on board.

I hope it turns out well, because the first two are on a list of games I regularly re-play, but if they ruin it, I wouldn't be surprised.

The first two games are some of my favorite games of all time.  I still use the mouse pad that I got with the original game.
This one is just weird.  It's like if it didn't say MAX PAYNE 3 on all the shots, I would never know it was a Max Payne game at all.  What was their reason to take it out of the New York setting?  I mean, there weren't even any parts of the first two games that took place in the day, but this one has HDR lighting all over the place.

With the new Max Payne 3 I’m sure it would be easy to make it a movie out of it. since he dose look like Bruce Willis.

I loved one and never played 2 (but it did look good just never put in the effort  to getting this.). But I don't know what to say about this one.

This is very out of place for a max payne game! That's all I got to say really!

Wow...  looks nothing like the first two.  However I have this to say.

The screenshots don't look to me like they're pulled from gameplay, or at least not without the aid of a "cinematic camera", (There was a console cheat that enabled a freely movable camera)

Here's to hoping they keep the same kind of gameplay and general feel the first two had.

it looks like they saw the Resident Evil 5 trailers and immediately started designing this game

it could be worse though they could've made it Sin City/Spirit out the ass

all these trends in action/adventure/FPS games are fucking stupid isn't everybody a bald angry world-weary guy now like even Lara Croft

even 24 did the same schtick with Tony I'm going to make an FPS where the guy grows a lot of hair and becomes a peace-loving hippie and actually he doesn't shoot anybody at all and stays home instead of going to random country

maybe I don't know I thought he looked different every game? I only played the first so I remember he was like a JPEG of this perpetually grinning guy made me nostalgic for Goldeneye and stuff remember they were supposed to have some sort of game boy camera feature for Perfect Dark I totally wanted to play as this freezed-expression version of myself and shoot my friends... or mario

I wonder if that was really Reiner's face in Perfect Dark that totally blew my mind at whatever age I was

This camera angle doesn't mean anything as they could do that just to take a screenshot like:

Inri - Yeah, I thought of that, but the overall feel is what still bothers me. I remember the early shots of MP 2, and they were pretty similar to the actual game. In that screen you show it still feels like a Max Payne camera angle, the new screen shots remind me more of recent games, or the camera change in Fallout 3 during a Vats shot.

Also, from the little bit they've posted about the story - Max being a private security guy for a wealthy family, it makes me think of Man on Fire.

As to how Max looked in the other games - in the first, Sam Lake, the guy who wrote it, did the modeling for the in game version and the graphic novels. In the second one, they used a guy named Timothy Gibbs. The new model resembles the Gibbs version of Max's appearance, albeit with the shaved head/beard/weight gain tacked on.

Maybe they just wanted to have him jumping around shooting the shit out of Brazilians? The slums of Brazil are a pretty interesting place for a game! Maybe it doesn't fit Max Payne at all, but Rockstar has a pretty decent track record in terms of making locales gripping and suitable.

you know that's the one movie that really really needed a game version and I don't think they did it meanwhile they keep making Batman games that probably still suck (I dunno do they still suck) but yeah while that would make me more confident in this game the screens still rub me the wrong way, it looks too much like generic game #4387752

I didn't see the appeal of these games when they first came out so I never played them. Somehow I am even less interested in the third one.

It ain't Max if it ain't Noir.

Though it sounds like an oxymoron, there was a term I heard in a review of Lee Child's Echo Burning, called "daylight-noir" that might serve as a workaround. (Found the exact quote online - The kind of daylight-noir setting that Jim Thompson loved.) I think if they put the effort in, they could get the atmosphere to work pretty well - I just have concerns over the writer change and the somewhat generic appearance of everything right now.

yeah the 2 things that intrigued me most about the original max payne games werent the gameplay or anything it was the story and style. with a change of writer and producer i am wary of it being as good as  the originals since the story really was incredible.

Also, looking at the screens i have no doubt it will be fun to play, but I can pick up many games that have great action gameplay and it looks like this is just another one of those. I don't like to judge too early but if there losing the nighttime noir elements (i'm not discounting the chance of it attempting daylight-noir, like you say, but still its not likely) then its going to lose a whole lot. Yeah, the original games had great gameplay but it realyl played second fiddle to the rest.

overall, sceptical :/ i'm would buy it based on those screens.

I never liked Max Payne. He stood for everything I don't like about post-Matrix films in a videogame. The first of which he looked constipated throughout.
I'm glad the series went this way. It's both funny and fulfilling to me.

I only played the 2 max payne games for the graphics and bullet time (2 had ragdolls but that was a weak gimmick) and never cared about the story because they were about killing thousands of people and nothing else

Max Payne's story was definitely above the cut, but I wouldn't exactly call it art...

max payne is actually a better game, like most games, if you ignore the story. i have trouble doing this though, i feel guilty

i played it for mowing down hordes in bullet time.

It kinda looks like one of those games where you play as a bald, tough spacemarine, shooting faggots left and right, except you don't have your cybertech 3000 battlesuit on.

I read in a mag. about this and they compared the look and the Direction it's takes to Uncharted: Drake's Fortune but it was trying to be funny when it said this.

I have re-played MP2 more then the first one, because the hallucination levels are a lot less annoying then the "try to land on the thin red line and make sure you get closer to the looped baby scream" from the first, but I had a bunch of mods on my old computer for the first one, including a Punisher one and a Hard Boiled one that were a total blast.

For some reason, I'm on a Hellraiser kick right now, and I just watched Inferno. Parts of it reminded me of the Max Payne mythos a little bit, even down to a scene at the end where He's even dressed the same way as Max. There's an idea for a Max Payne mod... add Cenobites to all the hallucinations, especially Chatterer!

gta 4 used the same engine as the ping pong game

wasn't that pretty good in terms of gfx and not too laggy

First one was amazing apart from the weird expression Max sported throughout the game. Second was more polished but otherwise the same. Still great games and looking forward to a 3rd

did they have a secret code in Max Payne 2 where you could revert him back to the old-school max with the photo of some guy's face pasted on and frozen in the same expression whether he's happy sad horny etc.

seriously the original max payne model is about as ubiquitous to me as the original mario sprite

either you don't know what ubiquitous means or you hang out in a max payne fan club

Post by: Ragnar on August 22, 2009, 12:55:12 am
yeah I kind of messed up

I meant it more like how they changed Sub-Zero's appearance 2 or 3 times and he was like a robot once and then he was just this guy in a blue outfit and nobody will remember any of these when they're old they'll just remember the guy in the ninja suit that very well might've been a discount halloween costume

I probably could've just said 'classic' but that doesn't cut it either, maybe iconic but that seems kind of weird too

Edit: I guess iconic is the word I'm looking for

i'm pretty sure for the first one they just digitized pictures of the staff. you can tell, their photos just give off that gamer geek vibe - even in a full leather trench-coat

well, max's assface in the first one is the digitized picture of the guy who wrote the story, iirc

I still think when they had that Game Informer editor in Perfect Dark it was awesome

I miss the days when games had so much accidental shit. Not that max payne face was accidental, I guess I mean when games had shitty graphics no matter what and people tried to do things to make the game look better like digitized faces and they just look so hokey today

Edit: I guess I mean everything's so planned now. Like by this generation of console they should be able to pull off any reasonable game idea they want. And really the game looks ok as in polished (at least compared to GOLDENEYE) but it's kind of like same reason Hollywood sucks, they probably spend about a half a million dollars filming a single scene in a bathroom and they try to make it look as much like an authentic bathroom as they can when nobody would ever notice if something was off except for the lead bathroom designer for the movie. Actually this metaphor works well for Goldeneye didn't the bathrooms in Goldeneye not even have toilet lids or something like that but yeah nobody cared it was just so awesome to have bathrooms in a game although first-person shooters do have an obsession with this
