Title: The launch of GW7
Post by: Drule on July 19, 2009, 01:19:02 pm
Hello!

As you can see on the mainsite (http://www.gamingw.net/) GW7 has been launched. We are happy about this, and without going into too much detail about our ideas we will say that GW is now entirely service-based. What this means is that the community is - or at least will be, when we have even more to offer - divided into sub-sections that are to be connected by the mainpage portal. Right now we have a blog, and in time we hope to be able to add game development resources such as graphical resources, a devlog system and other interesting functions that will cater to our userbase's needs. All future functions will be available in the black bar at the top which will be displayed on both the forums and the mainsite once everything is done.

How does this differ from GW6? Well, instead of depending on user-written content we have decided to feature news and articles from around the web while still keeping a portion of the site for featured community projects and articles. This means that we won't have any staffers at all (yet), but we will feature any good article, game or other type of creative effort that we come across here. Should you feel like contributing, all you'll have to do is PM or e-mail an admin, or post a written contribution in the form of a topic and we will probably pick it up. In fact, there will probably be a lot of featured content that weren't intended to be in the first place. :)

So that's the gist of it! I could write more, but I think this sums up the direction of the site pretty good.

Welcome to GW7, and I hope you'll enjoy being a part of the community.

Thanks to:
ASE, Bart, ramirez and leafo. Also the people who spent time making graphics for the mainsite.

P.S. Follow us on Twitter (http://twitter.com/gamingworld).

will there be a separate board for article submissions because some articles would look REALLY WEIRD if someone thought they were a regular topic

edit: though i guess maybe we could just tag them as articles?

Maybe a topic, but mostly no. The current idea is to fetch user-made content and feature it on the mainpage as it comes. This is partly for quality control and partly to make sure content is relevant and isn't being written for the sake of being written. There's no need to set up a submission system when articles are either too few or just kind of lackluster.

If you want to have something featured, PM or e-mail an admin.

are the mainsite sections going to focus on gamemaking or will there also be like an arts section or a media section as well?

When I opened the article, I see something like 'You're banned and can't post comments' .... wait a sec.. WHAT? After a while I realized I just haven't logged in. Please fix that, you got me shocked as hell

Oh, and the mainsite looks cool, I like the clean design. Hopefully this won't be like GW6..

Can you elaborate on the future services that twitter will be used for?

Twitter is already giving free internet cool points as a service. Still needs some Facebook and Digg links. All the cool sites got 'em!

So...it's really just a mechanism to get more members? Not that that's bad or anything.

You can follow GW updates with your trendy iPhone, since everyone who's worth anything has one and has a Twitter app to do with it. That's pretty neat!

Twitter isn't a GW service, it's just a way to keep up to date with what we're currently working on. We implemented it because it's a fast way to encourage feedback, discussion and input. The fact that it draws members is also a plus.

Mainsite looks pretty good design wise... but god what a waste of space on the left and right. What is this optimized for 800x600 or something?

I'm sure there must be a lot of cool features coded and everything in the background, but I don't see how this is currently any different from what was up the last few days. Besides the news post is there anything else on the site that will draw new members? It just looks like that's all there is plus the twitter side bar and links to the forums/IRC/poker ad.

I'm not trying to be negative or anything, but this just doesn't seem like a real launch until there is actual content on the site! I imagine that will show up shortly, which I'm excited for. :)

lol web 2.0 that's old news. it's all about web 3.0 now and real-time everything!!!

(real post: The "Web 2.0" name kind of died out awhile ago. Any information related content is going into being a "real-time" experience now as Twitter pushed that to a good portion of the mainstream.)

Welcome to the metafuture.

Are the forum themes really that horrendously constructed? What sort of ETA would be on a makeover for the forums? I can't wait!!

I won't hold my breath. Oh, I was also going to ask what ever happened to that Digg button. I'm not sure how much of an effect that would actually have, but it seemed like a cool option at first glance. Digg an article, people see it and get brought to GW, etc.

There is a Share button instead, through which you can Digg articles.

I woke up today and saw like 5 new posts on the GW front page.

Great job Drule, 5 posts a day is a ton for a smaller site like this, but if you keep it consistent with 1-2 posts a day, that's awesome. I hope others step up to write for the site as well.

I just read a Request for Resources ad that asked software developers for a detailed list of Web 2.0 experience.

I think the old system where the articles posted came up on the forum home page was a good idea, becuase it showed when new content was on the main page thus reminding you to check it out
Title: The launch of GW7
Post by: Vellfire on July 22, 2009, 10:59:37 pm
Yeah I definitely want that back, as I only rarely check out the homepage on its own.  Don't get me wrong, you need people to START checking the homepage, but it's better that they see the homepage because of the forums than never see it at all.

Will there be any plans to bring back the games section. The article thing is nice but it's missing the massive database of indie games that the old gaming world had. It would be nice if it would come back along with a rating system and the ability to narrow it down by genre, demo or completed, etc.
