Excuse the long list, these are all some of my favorite songs in the world. Just wanting to get opinions on which opening/key guitar riff sounds people like best out these options. Some songs here you may know, and any remaining will surprise you. Try listening to those unheard-of songs out from this list to decide if you like them or not.
-
i don't think we understand each other
-
First I felt like listening to all of them and really figuring out which one's best. Then I looked at the list and realized it's mostly 80s hard rock/heavy. I could vote for Pantera just because Pantera but I would feel bad afterwards.
Damn life is difficult.

I've included some thrash, NWOBHM, and speed metal in there. They're actually pretty damn heavy, especially from the 80s. The only glam metal band in the list is Pantera.
this is a pretty terrible list to choose from
Make your own.
-
dude your list is a pretty terrible representation of the 70s and 80s
-
where is the michael jackson?
-
Shut up ryan go listen to your jimi hendrix emulators
Panama is the one I like the most in the list
-
Here is what the poll reads: "Favorite main guitar riff by any of these 70s-80s traditional hard rock/heavy metal bands?"
where is the michael jackson?
Whoops, I forgot that Michael Jackson was a heavy metal screamer, not a pop singer. But I'll add "Beat It" since the song featured Eddie Van Halen's guitar solo, and we all know how he kicks ass at that. :)
Also, added in Cult and Guns 'N' Roses to the list.
dude your list is a pretty terrible representation of the 70s and 80s
ATARI, I wasn't focusing mainly on 70s and 80s music outside of the rock/metal genre on that list. I tried my best to pick the most obvious songs and toss in some rarities, as much as I hate purely mainstream. :welp:
-
Umm but like even with the poor choice of bands that you used, like when I think of Black Sabbath riffs Paranoid is far from what I would think of. And Panama, of all the van Halen songs? Seriously? And like same with half the other bands on your list. Also there was so much better shit in the 70s (not so much the 80s) than this. Also PS as much as you hate mainstream it looks like your list is pretty mainstream actually!

Half of it is mainstream, I put many mainstream songs here because I figured most "rock fans" (posers) who got addicted to Guitar Hero weren't too interested in the non-popular songs or bands, so they just go for their most popular tune. For Black Sabbath, Paranoid is something that I don't care too much for, when you have songs like Children of The Grave, Neon Knights, Heaven And Hell, Electric Funeral, NIB, Sweet Leaf, Hand of Doom, etc.
For Van Halen, hey, atleast I didn't pick Jump! I could've maybe chosen Hot For Teacher over Panama but oh well. Actually, I pretty much prefer Van Halen's DEBUT album over anything else by them IMO, with songs like Runnin' With The Devil, Eruption, or Ain't Talkin' Bout Love. But then again, I figure poser rock fans only know of their more popular songs, so I gave it to them.

thats not my favorite really its just awesome

Sorry, Kurt Kobain died and the rest of the Grunge era committed suicide by the mid to late 90s. But hey, it counts since their debut was released in 1989.
-
my brother has played so much nirvana that i can't even listen to them anymore. they are just annoying to me.
i voted for def leppard, natural choice. I only listen to the finest of rock. I'm definitely not a poser.

the date of that recording was in 89. go away.

the date of that recording was in 89. go away.
I meant as part of the 70s/80s choices. That song was one of their more aggressive.

thankyou for the michael jacksons

good work Mongoloid. nice detective work. got to have some moral backbone in these days! i will make sure you get a promotion for that.
keep posting pals. there's some nice stupid posts here and i want you to keep posting more.
-
Can't not pick Crazy Train. I don't even like the song, but that's probably one of the most memorable riffs of all time.
-
Well, Nirvana was one of the, of if not the biggest, reasons that I started playing guitar, so I was glad to see that video posted. School is another good one, and even Breed was out, albeit under a different name, by 89.
So, for me it is probably a close three way tie between that and two Danzig songs, Twist of Cain and Am I Demon.
-
see i can't understand how anyone could like danzig and nirvana at the same time, unless for nostalgia like ^ mentioned.
it's like hey my favorite composer is tchakovsky but michelle branch is up there too.
not that danzig is some amazing thing but nirvana is one of those bands like green day or something, and it get's held to some standard that it really doesn't deserve! I hate to blame the guy's death for their success but there really is nothing special or original about any of their music!
-
haha are you serious nirvana is no where by the likes of green 'gay' day. how dares you

2: Surfing With the Alien - Joe Satriani (1986)
3: Sweet Child o' Mine - Guns n' Roses (1987)
4: Hotel California - The Eagles (1976)
5: Bad to the Bone - George Thorogood and the Destroyers (1982)
edit
special mention to Maggot Brain - Funkadelic (1971)
that song rules
none of the songs on your list are even near my top 10 :(

michael jackson rules but if you listen to any of those other bands on a regular basis then youre a moron
-
hi i can play this game
that's my real answer btw
seriously though ^ this right here is right, i don't know how you could seriously listen to most of these bands on any real basis except michael jackson
-
michael jackson rules but if you listen to any of those other bands on a regular basis then youre a moron
Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Pantera, Metallica, Guns N' Roses?
-
I can't understand how anyone would wanna listen to Michael Jackson on a regular basis after the last weeks. And saying people are morons because they listen to any of these bands regulary is just as moronic.
Aaanyways. I don't have any favourite, but thought I'd pitch in some memorable riffs by bands that haven't been added yet
UFO - Can you Roll Her (1976.. I think?) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQ1KW1Za3ss&fmt=18)
Alice Cooper - Desperado (1971) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GogQ00eWr4&fmt=18)
Aerosmith - Walk this Way (1975?) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORAvMk-iXec&fmt=18)

Uh, yeah right. His music is so fucking heavy, so brutal, that he made Metallica and Slayer sound like two white furry puppies gently eating a strawberry, even back in the 80s. Suuuuure...*headbangs to Metallica - Trapped Under Ice*
But hey, YOU silly schoolgirls asked that I'd put him up there (a pop artist, he never was a hard rock singer), so I was being nice and chose his only hard rock song, out of all his pop songs he's done. If you come to this thread worshiping Michael Jackson's music over other artists on a HARD ROCK/HEAVY METAL thread, then you're a moron. Have a nice day. Jackasses. :)

-
Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Pantera, Metallica, Guns N' Roses?
only two of these bands are any good (hint: not pantera, metallica, or guns and roses)
-

Too MODERN for you, old-timer? I was just about to write a three paragraph novel about how your links shine like Jesus on Mt. Sinai in this confusing thread of stupidity and bad taste, but nope, you blew it. Not with Metallica, because there are so many things wrong in that band, not with Guns N' Roses, because they are well, glamrock, but with Pantera (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_WZkCgeXWk).
-
modern has nothing to do with the fact that they completely fucking suck
-
Naaaaah, not convinced.
-
pantera is not shit you stupid man they are the best band ever in america and you have proven your own dishonesgty by saying some not true
-
Dunno about you guys, but Pantera fucking kicked ass. They were quite talented in the earlier 90s, and helped save metal from being completely exterminated by grunge. How could you not enjoy Cowboys From Hell or Vulgar Display of Power if you are indeed a fan of metal?
Their stuff beats most of the 80s glam pop MTV bands (Yeah, I know, I started this thread), even though they started glam themselves too. Sure, they copied off Exhorder but worked 15 times as hard as them to get where they are.
I am no fan of Guns N' Roses or Metallica (post-Kill 'Em All), though. So those are the only two bands I hate from Marge's list. Modern or old has nothing to do with what is good and bad. I only care about the style of songwriting in metal that has been lost since 1995. I despise the coming of alternative, industrial, and worst of all, Nu-metal. Fuck Limp Bizkit, fuck Marilyn Manson (Alice Cooper wannabe), and fuck Slipknot! I'd rather eat Corn than listen to one.
-
if you are indeed a fan of metal?
heres your mistake
-
Allen Hunter were you alive for any of the 80s, or even the first half of the 90s? I only ask because a no to both of these questions explains a lot.

I will be 19 years old by the next month. And I've listened to 80s/some 90s music growing up as a child. I'm just saying, opinions are opinions. Not saying mine are correct, neither yours or anyone else's. I just think it's silly to bash a band or artist sucks without a valid reason to hate them other than musical preference. But no one's forced to like it.
For example, I do not listen to the Beatles, neither consider myself a supporter, but I respect them enough to not bash on them because I don't have anything bad to say about them that doesn't reflect my personal preferences. I will not be like some average right-winged conservative, attacking any and all musical styles that contain secular lyrics.
My favorite musical genre is heavy metal, but I open up to various other styles too, like classic rock, jazz, blues, some older pop, some opera, and classical.

fair enough. who are your favorite opera singers
-
fair enough. who are your favorite opera singers
My favorite opera singer is Luciano Pavarotti. Two songs I really like are Ave Maria and O Sole Mio.
-
Just because he's the most popular one right
-

I wasn't going to say it but........... yeah your pretty much a stereotypical metal fan. Every metal fan claims to appreciate jazz, opera, classic rock blah blah. Even though metallica isn't exactly saying anything that isn't somewhat mindless.
-
Just because he's the most popular one right
No. I never said that. I just love his range of singing, and I never said I was very experienced with the world of opera or jazz or blues. But of course, it's easier to introduce the more popular artists than the more obscure. I just like listening to random artists from these genres as long as they sound good. Tenor is my preferred range in singing, I've sang for my HS choir for several years and we've had some really decent tenors and altos in there. I just wish I could sing that high, I only go as far as bass.
-
why dont you like the beatles, give me some reasons.

Allen Hunter doesn't listen to anything he can't throw the "horns" up to :fogetrockon:
-
My favorite opera singer is Luciano Pavarotti. Two songs I really like are Ave Maria and O Sole Mio.
Il Gladiatore is also really good. Nessun Dorma is another one I like listening to, but it has been everywhere from world cup soccer to Boxing Helena.
-
when you ask metal people about classical music, they all say they like bach, beethoven, wagner, and mozart but when you ask them which songs they like they don't know any.
-
I used to have Walkürenritt as my ringtone, now it is Toccata Fugue in D Minor.
-
People who say 4'33" is their favourite song by John Cage usually can't name any other songs by him either
-
ok fair enough you respect the beatles so why dont you listen to them? musically theyre way beyond any of your favorite metal bands, or is that why youre only open to things like jazz and classical?
-
god i love this thread
it's like ultimate guitar all over again
-
also metal people say they like chopin but only know nocturne number 2.
-
i like metal because it has its roots in classical music
-
metal managed to siphon all of the bad things about classical without any of the good things
and if you dont like the beatles youre gay
-
I used to have Walkürenritt as my ringtone, now it is Toccata Fugue in D Minor.
lol if i were you id keep my phone on silent in public
-
hmm how do you feel about the bible and christians in general
-
lol if i were you id keep my phone on silent in public
Every so often when we're taking a break at band practice the perfect storm occurs where three of us get an incoming call at around the same time. You get the theme from Halloween, Five Minutes Alone by Pantera, and then my phone. We all shake our heads at each other and then answer our phones.
-
You guys remind me of James Labrie's voice.
-
if you dont like the beatles youre gay
i dunno i went through my beatles phase a while back and I'm pretty over them. John and George's solo stuff was much better than anything the Beatles ever did.
-
Anyway, geetar is old-fashioned.
Samples and synths is where it's at.
