Title: Female Comedians...
Post by: jamie on August 03, 2009, 10:11:46 pm

My God. An absolutely atrocious character. Not funny in the slightest (then again, most female stand up comedians aren't), nor attractive in the slightest (refer to previous statement in brackets). She was an annoying, overly quirky, unlikeable character that added nothing to the film other then the sub-plot where Rogen/Schwartzman were arguing about who should have got with her first.

Okay we get it, you're a slut and you slept with Schwartzman. And WOW, how funny was that joke regarding how Rogen owed her $50 from the $100 profit he received for scalping the concert tickets, dumb bitch. They end her sub-plot with Rogen winning her over; I hated it all.

How she was given a role in the film (let alone a film directed by Judd Apatow of all people, being the comic genius that he is) I will never comprehend. She was a horrible actress and deserves no further work in the industry.

Otherwise, a nearly insignificant flaw in a unique and satisfying comedy that stands well as Apatow's third directorial effort, not to mention one of Sandler's most complex/mature characters (which, even being somewhat of a fan of his, isn't saying much).

When you're facing a loaded gun... what's the difference?
-The Departed

Female comedians...are they funny? Some scientestes believe that estrogen is a humour inhibitor. What are your thoughts? Chime in.

Tig Notaro seems like she might be all right but I can't find much of her material online. I mean I know of Maria Bamford (is okay), Kirsten Schaal (is on daily show and stinks), Sarah Silverman (is stupid), and all the 90's alt-comedy idiots but who else. How about someone smart beyond being awkward and having to learn to deal with being awkward. I'm sick of these middle of the road idiots who are really gross as hell and stupid but pretend not to be because they know which American white liberal boxes to tick.

I'm tired of wading the the same 5 guys with different faces over and over again. I make stand-up comedy topics around here all the time and there are rarely any good suggestions which is because there probably aren't any good comedians around. All the men stink - I have seen all of the men.

So...how about the ladies...If there's any potential out there, I gotta tap that.

You know my roommates always say this and I don't really get it.  It's like, we can watch a good female comedian and they won't say anything, then we'll watch a bad one and they'll say, "Ever notice how women aren't funny??? lol".  Come on nah.

Tim and Eric, Brother Theodore and Neil Hamburger are the three who can really make me laugh. Even then, apart from Theodore, they can both be a bit dumb but heck at least they are trying. And Theodore is long dead.

Ellen DeGeneres has funny standup so fuck all y'alls.

Besides her tbh there are only a handful of ANY standup comedians that are any good, most of them are terrible.

I understand that stand-up comedy is one of the hardest things you can do, but in my experience, women are really bad at it.  I've seen a couple that had their moments, but that's it.  Many of them play these overly-quirky characters that come off as trying to hard.  This isn't just women, either, it seems there's this whole generation of shit comics on Comedy Central nowadays.  I especially hate that Mr. Baby or whoever he is, with his inner-voice observations.

I also hate comics who try too hard to be edgy or offensive (OH NO HE DI'INT), like their entire routine relies on that.  It doesn't even make me flinch anymore.  I REALLY hate Comedy Central Roasts.  I want to throw a grenade in the middle of that whole crowd of comics.  It's bad enough that 90% are bad comics, but when it's bad comics making bad jokes about other bad comics, it's the most cringeworthy thing I can think of.
Title: Female Comedians...
Post by: jamie on August 03, 2009, 10:33:51 pm
Well, yeah, I will. However, I would not have heard about Brother Theodore or Neil Hamburger if not for this place (or at least, this is where I heard about them). Hundley told me about them a long time ago and eventually I came to like them. Tim and Eric I probably found here, too. Alot of my favourite music, I was told about here.

Just because I hate or dislike or am indifferent to almost everything doesn't mean that every once in a while something really good won't come along or be casually mentioned in a post that I am lucky enough to investigate. Saying that though, I don't see why I should have to disguise the fact that I think most comedians are either awful, bad or just boring. They are! I love the stand up comedy, but almost all of the people who do it are dickheads.

Why do people always tell me I hate everything? I don't hate everything, I just hate horrible things and I don't care about things that aren't interesting.

no, you just have some kind of weird opinions and it's hard to tell where it's coming from. that's what I think anyway. it's ok I don't mind.

I also hate comics who try too hard to be edgy or offensive (OH NO HE DI'INT)
louis ck. I think he can be funny but this really ruins his routine. if he didn't do this shit I bet he would be at least OK

Well dude you look at things that really aren't horrible but might just be average to good at best but you call them HORRIBLE, and you do this more often than you say yeah that was great!! so you kind of give off that impression.

I don't think there's a stand up comedian with or without a dick I would pay to see. The comedian's genitalia doesn't make or break the routine for me I think

I don't think my standards are crazy. I think when it comes to things I don't like I just draw a line between what is harmless and what isn't harmless. The stuff that isn't harmless I say I hate! The stuff that is harmless I just keep my trap shut about. I don't want to be one of those guys who loves to insult things, I've never thought of myself like that.

Although, sometimes I just get tired of letting things go, you know? Like I see one comment too many like this:
Quote
yeah lady comedians are usually awful.

and I just decide ahhhh heck just say you hate that. Just say it, who cares. Maybe it's mean, but just do it, because it isn't something that deserves to be left alone, really, even if the person didn't know what they were actually saying. That's why I decided to say Ellen Degeneres stinks, because I think she encourages an irrelevant and lazy view to life which I realise is ridiculously vague but I wasn't prepared to defend it right now! Perhaps I will in my treatise. All I care about is if people are trying! That is even more vague!

I think she'll get better. I'm not sure if I like her yet, though. I mean this clip made me laugh but I could also see disliking it in a different light. Still, does anyone have any of her other stuff? An album, or a clip of a full set? I'd check it out.

I have noticed this alot, too. Also, male comedians get away with alot more bad jokes from people than females do. A male makes a clunker and he's having an off-moment, a women does and she's showing us just how unfunny she really is.

I think the strangeness or double standard surrounding female comedians can be attributed to society.  When a man is out making conversation with a female, he's the one expected to crack the jokes, to make his partner laugh.  It's kind of the male's natural niche, to be a comedian if he can.

Most female stand-up comedians that I've seen have failed to make me laugh. Though there are lots of female book writers that have a nack at writing comedy in novels.

Also, that "No Moleste" routine was pretty good actually. Better then most female stuff that I've seen. Got a tad repetitive at the end but in general a pretty strong performance.

Oh and I've only seen the entirety of one Ellen routine and about 5 minutes of her show. What I've seen I have not laughed once or even smiled.

that is unfortunate and unlikely, i have never seen a female comic say that outside of commercials and cartoons where they are lampooning some type which i guess has to exist. airline food!

apart from the ladies already mentioned and some writers and people previously seen on: saturday night live i cannot really think of any comediennes, but there have to be some somewhere. i don't think maria bamford's that bad, she just always does the same jokes. which is why i do not often enjoy stand-up

There aren't many funny male comedians, either.

fix'd

I tried jotting down a list of my favorite comedians and I realized that more than half where dead and only one (Maria Bamford) was a women. Although I have a few favorites from the UK my short list may be due to the fact that the comedians with the most exposure in the US are either sexist, racist, lolrandom, or geeks and they don't interest me in the slightest.

Wendy Liebman is a really funny comic. I don't know if she is still in the biz but I saw her on tv a few times in the 90's. She was doing Kevin Nealon's jokes before Nealon was.

And I do like Lisa Lampinelli, but only because I believe that's the real her. She isn't just doing an act. She is a digusting person. And sometimes that's funny.

You'd be surprised at just how many times men have to hear this before they can acknowledge it as true.

Well, not that it's really a number of times they have to be told, the truth is that they have to be told this constantly and the longer they've gone without being told this, the less likely they are to believe it when they are finally told again, even if it's for the 1000th time already.

There is two guy comedians who are alive, and young who make me laugh and they're generally dry. Ones an indian who jokes about his family, his own race, and some other guy who just basically rants about things like a nervous wreck who never curses. Sucks that i don't know their names.

Lewis Black is also pretty bad for this, he has like four CDs out and all of them contain a bit on jews and christmas that is essentially EXACTLY THE SAME every time, like I think we get the picture by now. Jews dont celebrate christmas, hanukah sucks, etc.

I dont feel that this applies only to women. It also applies to Americans, if you ask me. Now I don't want to come across like an anti-american asshole, because you stinky yanks outnumber me about 50 to 1 on here. So I'm gonna skip the rhetoric and jump straight to it: do Americans have trouble understanding subtle humour?

I've seen alot of American comics try and fail miserably at irony, for example, but irony is a harder thing to achieve than one might think so that is understandable. I never see American satirists though. I'm sure they must exist, but not in vast numbers. There are two exceptions I know of. The first is Jon Stweart, I watch the daily show occasionally and I usually enjoy it although it's a bit too wrapped up in American politics for a foreigner like me to fully appreciate it. The second is Larry David, again there are a few jokes where I think some things have been lost on the journey overseas but I think its a friggin hilarious show.

My third and final example would be The Office: An American workplace. You may or may not know that the concept for this show was bought from a UK sitcom called simply The Office. They recreated it and the immitation wasn't as good. While I found the American office to have some funny moments, on the whole I think it lacked sincerity and they were trying too hard, hence the subtle comedy tones that tickled my ribs in the UK series weren't as strong.

I've seen alot of HBO specials and American standups, and don't get me wrong for the first 20 minutes I'm usually in stitches with the good comedians. But... it gets to be too much for my tastes. American stand ups seem to follow this trend of commenting on a situation that the average person might find themselves in, pointing out some particular aspect of this situation, applying a funny line or catchphrase, and shouting really loud.

"You ever get your dick caught in your zipper?"
"I love women with big breasts!"
"You know what mice are? I'mma tell ya what mice are... fag rats!"

I seriously think I could get on HBO if i had more material like that and an energetic stage presence. I watched this one stand up, was called George Lopez: America's Mexican. My god it was shite.

There are funny American comedians out there; Katt Williams is one of my personal favourites. But even then, his style of comedy is very basic, he just does it to such a high level that I enjoy it. Americans can also do situational comedy, but usually only in movies. Knocked up and all those kinds of movies... good situational comedy but again not really any subtlety about it.

So I ask you, Americans and others, am I grossly overgeneralising here or is there really a lack of subtle comedy in the American sense of humour?

Depends on the comic. The vast majority of comedians in the US are bad, and because there's a lot more of us here, there's also a lot of bad comedians.

A lot of it has to do with the whole comedy circuit that it exists over here. Most comedy clubs are usually dingy places filled with scum or tacky places filled with douchebags and in order for a comedian to make any kind of career out of doing gigs, they're going to have to pander to a lot of these audiences. What ends up happening is that most comedians who get famous are telling jokes for the absolute lowest common denominator.

comedians are awful.

Quote
I've seen alot of American comics try and fail miserably at irony, for example, but irony is a harder thing to achieve than one might think so that is understandable. I never see American satirists though. I'm sure they must exist, but not in vast numbers. There are two exceptions I know of. The first is Jon Stweart, I watch the daily show occasionally and I usually enjoy it although it's a bit too wrapped up in American politics for a foreigner like me to fully appreciate it. The second is Larry David, again there are a few jokes where I think some things have been lost on the journey overseas but I think its a friggin hilarious show.
neither of those shows are any good. this is not feh!! ignorant american doesn't get the humor!! -_- they are just a couple of shows that have their moments but are usually awful. I like how curb your enthusiasm perpetuates HBO's QUALITY IMAGE (stella artois) by advertising itself as an intelligent comedy. well it must be good!!! it's not, it's actually pretty dumb most of the time.

someone should make fun of your post I don't feel like it

Hmm...I think Willem T. Taft has something to say about all of this:

I totally agree on this.  I think most American actors and comedians get more wrapped up in playing a character than they do planning or writing comedy.  I like some good satire, but it's just very hard to come by around here.  I really don't understand the subtelties you see behind Larry David, because most of it seems to be very blatant irony or just "bad shit happens haha".

here's an example:

THAT'S THE GUY!! I really hate that guy.

one of the problems with jim gaffigan is that he sucks all the fun out of stand up by doing that schtick that he does where immediately after he tells a joke he goes into his little 'audience voice' that tells a crowd exactly what they're supposed to think.  he is probably the most milquetoast comedian i have ever seen.

Hes not one of my favorites. but I think he can be pretty funny. I mean I've laughed actually out loud at his stuff before.
