Title: Batman: Arkham Asylum (It's impressive?)
Post by: Carrion Crow on August 10, 2009, 12:52:45 am
What happens when you take the same engine used for games such as Gears of War, UT3 and Bioshock and then use it to make a Batman game that is being released at a time that doesn't tie in with the motion picture?

Decide for yourself.

The demo is currently available on XBL and PSN (And maybe the PC?) I just played through the demo and I was really impressed. It's made by Eidos and there is an element of Hitman in there, a dash of Tomb Raider, some cover features that appear to be in all next-gen games. There's also a visual mode you can drop in and out of that is comparable to Splinter Cell, these names I am dropping are all fave games of mine and I believe that this game is not just another superhero game.

The visuals are incredible and the combat system flows really smoothly. You find yourself thinking out your moves rather than just button bashing as you would when normally beating off your foes in hand to hand. Great atmosphere and voice acting. I am full of praise until I can play the full game when I expect I will have my reservations.

Here's the trailer that came at the end of the demo:

What are your thoughts on this? I was expecting more of the same of inFamous and Protoype game mechanics but this game cannot be categorised with those in my opinion.

It's weird how this game is getting so much attention, but I guess it's looking really promising.  The gameplay looks really cool and involving.  I'm really curious what the reviewers will say when it comes out.

I'll be getting this demo soon, I just saw it was out. Can't wait to play it, I've been hyped about this game for quite a while now.

i'm pretty excited for the game being a big batman fan, but i didn't know the demo was out already so i'm definitely going to go check that out.

all i can say so far is bringing back the voice actors from batman: the animated series was a great decision.

yeah, bringing back mark hamill was a good decision and I'm glad they're getting back to Jokers crazy gadgets and stuff instead of trying to make him like the dark knight's Joker.

not too keen on some of the design choices (batman is too horny)

I really enjoyed the demo too, my only beef is visuals. The areas look really nice and detailed, yet nothing is destructable... Maybe it would have taken too long to make, or whatever. Biggest though is the hoooorrible lipsync. I'd take HalfLife over this batman lipsync... Just bad.
Though I preordered this awhile ago and will definitely be bataranging foos

I guess it looks ok. I'd prefer a batman rails shooter on my phone though.

The demo is good. It's like batman games might finally be good from now since this one set the bar for standers. Now all we need now is a good superman game.

This demo really surprised me, so far the game is great! I mean sure it's the demo, but still I can tell already that the full game will be awesome.

So far the game is getting some pretty rave reviews, so now I'm even more excited

The only problem is the game ships about a week before I head back to college where I'm 90% sure I won't have a 360 :p

I just played this demo. It was okay, but I'm not picking it up. The combat was incredibly lame, all I had to do was mash a button and occasionally some button input would appear on the screen. Everything about the combat is some form of "lite" quick time events. Everything is so predetermined and simple. The game would show off some slow motion action whenever you killed a guy, but that wasn't impressive either. The sneaking wasn't nearly as good as a game like Riddick, but I really liked how you could approach the last part of the demo with different tactics. I just don't get some of these design choices, though.  Even how the camera acts got on my nerves; sometimes it's right on Batman's ass blocking out 50% of the screen and other times it's farther away. And there is absolutely no reason why you should have to tap the A button a million times just to open a vent. That REALLY bugged me.

I think it will be a decent game, but it's not for me. I enjoyed some of the sneaking elements, but everything else felt weak. *shrug*

Or more likely, he was talking about playing as the Joker and killing them in slow motion.

I tried the demo and enjoyed it, even though it was really short. I would have liked to have played some of a boss battle so I could test out some of that side of gameplay, but what was in the demo was really good. The only thing that bothered me/I found strange was the art style+voice cast. I would have liked to have seen this game done with a (well done) cell shaded version of the animated series designs, but I guess they were going for the straightforward comic look. The main characters look good, something seems a little off about Batman's proportions, but the regular enemies and backgrounds look like they could have been ripped from any recent "gritty" fps/tps.

I rented this and I find it fun. there's a lot of stuff that feels a little gimmicky (detective vision) but I understand that they wanted to make this a BATMAN GAME and not just a brawler/god of war ripoff with BATMAN character models. I'm playing on Easy and it IS pretty easy, but I don't mind that. Combat is really simple but actually fun because it's so responsive. They gave it a cheeseball name - FREEFORM COMBAT SYSTEM or something - but it IS actually pretty freeform and Batman responds very quickly to every button press - no sluggish animations holding you back. Even fighting like six guys at once isn't that complicated, as it basically revolves around pressing the Y button to counter at different intervals. but it looks great.

Also the graphics are fantastic, and if you're a fan of the excellent Batman cartoon from the early 90s, Mark Hamil voices the Joker once again here, and they got the same voiceactor for Batman as the original cartoon too which is a great nod for fans I guess. If you're into RPG stuff or collecting shit, Batman has a lot of upgradeable abilities and there's a ton of random stuff to collect around Arkham including CHARACTER BIOS and stuff for all the major heroes and villains.

I've got the game for three days, idk how long it is but it's worth a rental at least, even if you're not a Batman fan!

it's certainly LIGHT YEARS ahead of pretty much every single other Batman game before.

Forgot to mention the collector's package is totally unworth it. Batarang is a piece of shit you can't take off the stand. There's a booklet with character bios (that you can find in game anyway) and a huge bulky black bat-shaped storage case that won't fit anywhere unless you tried (though it's too ugly to want to). That's it, though there was a free add-on that you can probably buy on PSN anyway.
The game however, is totally worth it.

It's nothing to do with the movie. Also I played it on 8800gts320mb , 5000+ X2 @ 2.6Ghz and 2Gigs DDR2 800 and it runs full settings 1920x1200. HOW PLEASANT.

Take a look at his post history.  He alternates posts between all caps and all lower case.

I think it's more closely related to the animated series than it is to the movies.  Especially since they got several of the voice actors from the series to reprise their roles for the game.

It is touted as being based on the entire 70 year franchise. The scene of a bell breaking down from the rafters is based, shot for shot, off a scene in the first Burton Batman, and other things throw a nod here and there. Not having read comics in a long time, I probably missed a lot of the "inside" references.

I had a lot of fun with the game, and I posted a few times about it in "What are you playing?" It did a lot of things very well, but there are a few little things that got me frustrated at times. (Listed, mostly, in the other topic.)

I'm hoping for some interesting DLC. I probably would have gone through the entire game again already if the was available for the whole game instead of just the challenge maps. Hell, if they (they wont) throw in a DLC of the first Az-Bat costume from Knightfall, complete with wrist launched bat shurikens, I might be swayed to another full play through.

Anymore, I always feel let down when I finish a game, especially if I take the time to max out 100% on my first playthrough. If there had been a new game+ feature of some sort, if the non-story based upgrades could have carried over to a new file, I would have been happier. But, my misgivings aside, it is a really good game.

Sold over 2 million copies, I haven't bought one yet as I am firm in my belief that this is a £10 game and not a £39.99 game.
