So, I've recently thought about getting a second part time job to pay for my ridiculous lifestyle. I saw this ad in the newspaper today for a dishwasher. I've never washed a dish in my life. I have heard a position like this is very awful. But, it seems like, really easy *puts 30 dishes in dishwasher and smoke weed with girlbones outside for 30 minutes*
Can anyone tell me how awful this job is? I am curious. Have any of you worked as a dishwasher? I need your opinions/thoughts.
-
You have to sit in my kitchen quietly and not tell our secrets. That's what we require of our dishwasher.
-
you'd make an excellent dishwasher as you ought to be used to people putting dirty things in you
-
I'm a busboy at a restaraunt, usually considered the lowest position, but man, I feel bad for the dishwashers man. Like my job is to throw out ppl's food if they dont finish and I give it to the dishwashers, which is like a big table filled with dishes. People just toss stuff at their counter/sink thing. They gave to scrap away all the extra bits of food. Its not like you just put it in dishwasher, you gotta scrub it down first. Also there are like little butter saucests that get thrown in and bits of food and stuff al over the sink, and since we are always pouring unifinished drinks in there it all adds up and collects into strange mixtures of french fries, butter, and milk/water, ice, macrooni, etc. People just toss full meals at them sometimes and they have to scrap it off.
Also you're a white boy and they speak espanol. They only get a limited time to eat/smoke J's,m because they are always needed and resatraunts are usually busy. Also when you come back, guess what? Huge ass pil.e of dishes man, it collects when they aint around/.
-
It's a rewarding experience. You'll find it satisfying.
-
you sound like a child. so yes you should probably take this job as maybe it will make you grow up a little bit
-
and you act like a cryfag. explain to me how having a second part time job will make me grow up a little? oh, i see, you were trying to be cool for your internet friends. cool, dude, you're such an impressive human.
brb talking 2 friends bout it on aim.
king of games, i thought a dishwasher and bus boy did the same things. Hmm, maybe Iill try to apply as a bus boy instead. since it seems a little bit easier.
-
lol just going by your myspace/how you act/NEVER WASHED A DISH
cryfag though, nice.
and no the job probably won't be "easy," it will probably be very boring and mentally stressful. it's not difficult work though.
-
depending on the place that you are working at, the conditions could be tolerable, or miserable (but never good, considering that you are a dishwasher in the first place). You will probably have to get used to dealing with lots of hot water in the back of some kitchen that isn't air conditioned and you'll be wearing gloves and be getting all hot and sweaty
-
Whats your first part time job? (don't say starbucks)

i work in a bookstore. i have a few friends who work at starbucks and they say it's really awful.

Ryan why are you so needlessly hostile :(
As far as dishwashing goes I would say avoid it and try to be a busboy just because that job is much better really. All you have to do is stand around and clear tables, and as long as you do a good job (quick and thorough I guess?) the waiters/waitresses give you a share of their tips.
-
Yeah they are required to give you part of their tips, that's how it works at my place. Gotta be on your toes, but sometimes no one comes in so there is not much to do. It's not hard but it can be tiresome because of back/legs standing up all the time and carrying heavy things etc.
-
Ryan why are you so needlessly hostile :(
was ryan being hostile? i dont think he meant what he said in a shit way, like you sound like a fucking child grow up, more like, you sound like your young, maybe its good for you.
rajew why are you so needlessly accusatory :(
-
Dishwashing is derogatory, thankless and pretty much an all-around shit job. No one wants to wash dishes, and I think the only way you'd enjoy doing it is if you had a friendly workplace, which is sort of rare in the restaurant business. I work as a chef and I see way too many dishwashers either getting pushed around or just walking about being generally miserable and hating their job/lives.
Do something else instead. Get a job waiting, marketing, selling shit or something else that requires little education.

Well I'm pretty sure it's well known that TFT is like what, 28?
The tone I picked up (and TFT too apparently!) is the former. BUT IF THAT'S NOT THE CASE, I use this post to apologize to Ryan in advance. Sorry bud.
also ryan has a habit of following people around and being mean all over the forums :(
-
If you bus, you get to get bossed around all day by beautiful women (da waitresses.)
-
totally depends what kind of restaurant you're working at. i currently wash dishes and wait at a sushi bar so as far as dishes go it's a pretty good gig, mostly just rice and raw fish. i just chill in back and listen to music most of the time which is fine so long as my general domain is clean.. some people get grossed out at the sight of mixed food though so if this is a problem for you then i'd take that into consideration. some days you'll get fucked by the cooks when they decide it's time to wash the grease filters or some shit thats really difficult to get clean, but other then those days its more or less an easy job.
also i hear dishwashing for large bodies like colleges and summer camps is terrible. massive amounts of dishes, pots, pans. washing in bulk is supposed to be the worst
you'll also probably hate your boss but that just comes with the territory of minimum wage work. fuck middle management. always.

ok i was just mentioning. i dont know which way it is i've just not absorbed all this scepticism of GW yet xD

Ryan is mad because he owes money to the government :fogetsad:

How the fuck have you never washed a dish in your life. How is that even possible.
I say go for it. It's repetitive and boring, but it's completely mindless. It's very low-stress, and you usually won't have people yelling at you (at least not once you get the hang of it).
-
I don't mind it but of course I work in the kitchen of a camp and all my coworkers are friends/family and we all have fun so yeah. Anyways, basically spray dishes, put them in the tray, run them through. Shitty dishes might need some scrubbin' but it's relatively easy. Of course I can't say for certain though because I've only done this and never worked in a restaurant or anything like that which would probably be very different.
Beasly, I work at a summer camp and the most we have to wash is like 500 plates and it's not that hard considering the machine we have we don't actually have to scrub each one by hand. Usually the machine gets everything off when it goes through (sometimes it requires 2 or 3 times) but some you have to scrub.
-
It is high stress because if your slow ass is too slow and customers/dishes start stacking up....
-
it definitely depends on where you go. i work at a country club where the chefs/employees are really friendly to the mostly spanish-speaking dishwashers and even though the work is pretty terrible, it ends up being a fairly OK environment. I'm sure there are a lot of restaurants where this same job would be very depressing and others would make you feel like shit

Drule, if you are the chef then you are supposed to have control in the kitchen. Why not try and make things better for your dishwashers?
-
dishwasher?!?
excellent choice
i think you found the right career path

ahahahahaha
you're dumb as hell

I've worked as a dishwasher in a local restaurant before, but in all honesty it was pretty terrible. The hours were standard (8-9 hour shifts), but it was GOGOGO all the time. I wasn't just doing dish though, I was expected to prepare salads, and grabs things for the cooks. It was incredibly fast-paced at some points and after a few months I just couldn't take it anymore.
-
I've had to dishwash alot btw and it does suck ass but I wouldn't say its the worse work you could possibly be doing. Make sure you're wearing dishwashing gloves or something because the detergent can irritate your skin. There really isn't much to discuss when it comes to dishwashing its kind of self explanatory, go as fast as you can so you can keep all of the nastiness from the food and shit cleaned up and get breaks but don't go too fast and break shit.
people keep complaining about it being too busy and shit but honestly that isn't too bad because it keeps you busy and from being bitched at for fucking off plus it makes time go by alot faster.

Literally having to run back and forth doing salads and cleaning dishes isn't my idea of 'not too bad.' Sure, there are probably WORSE jobs, but at least where I was then went through something like seven dishwashers in a few months before I was there. It was ridiculously fast paced to the point where taking breaks was basically out of the question, because by the time you got back you'd have so much shit to do.
-
Dishwashing depends entirely where you work. If the environment is alright, the job is alright. It's idiot work, but it's a paycheque. So who cares? A job's a job. I worked as one at Casey's for a summer. I got free drinks served to me, got to play my own music, and super cheap food.
The only thing I loathe about dish washing, is ramicans. Those little cup-like dishes/bowls for coleslaw or dips. Fuck I hate those things with a passion.
-
Yeah I get free fountain drinks at work. The chefs also put out food for the staff.

Sounds like my job at wal-mart that I had for about 4 year Pushing Cart and believe me it's a thank less job and I probably was 10 time worse then a dishwasher. Hell I was in the heat, the rain, the snow, thunderstorms. I was running around like a chicken with out head. I hate taking a lunch since everything is gone, most of the time in about 15 min. Then I have customers bitching at me telling my the obvious. Then you got your random psycho trying to make your life even hard. Then random spills and carryouts.
-
depends.... how good is your spanish?

I fucking hate those things. And I hate their name! Why can't they be called "little condiment cups"??
I worked as a busser at a place that required all front-end staff to wear long-sleeve oxfords buttoned all the way up (sleeves and collars) with ties and aprons. It was hot as fuck and impossible to keep clean when you're cleaning up after people who leave a table looking like they just ate off the floor. Then you're expected to help with dish AND food prep. Holy shit. THEN you see waitstaff just standing around drinking soda, not doing a goddamn thing when there's shit to be done. Please cut me some slack. On busy nights, I envied the dishwasher, because he was paid as much as I was, but he didn't have to dress like a tool AND do the dirty work.
-
How the fuck have you never washed a dish in your life. How is that even possible.
Maybe he has an actual dishwasher, I prefer to wash the dishes by hands rather than using my dishwasher... it takes half the time.
-
you still have to clean the dishes a lil bit before putting them in the dishwasher
-
Yeah really we have a dishwasher and there's still tons of dishwashing to be done. And sometimes you don't have enough dishes to really justify using the dishwasher so you end up washing them by hand anyway.
-
it is not as cool as bookshop work- dont doit
-
while you're dishwashing, they're brainwashing you
-
try to keep your hands clean and dry and not too soapy, if you're doing that for hours dish soap can really mess up your hands
-
don't dry your hands unless they're going to stay dry for a while.
-
wear rubber gloves
-
Congrats your hired!!
