Title: Ponyo, the newest Hayao Miyazaki movie

so i went and saw Ponyo today and i thought it was fantastic :D

Ponyo is the story of a young fish-girl who desperately wants to become human so she can live with the boy she's fallen in love with. (wait, wasn't there another Disney movie like this? something about a Little Mermaid... :P ) However, she can't be a creature of both magic and humanity, and she disrupts the balance of nature by trying to do so. it's up to the boy, Sousuke, to find a way to make them both happy.
it's a very cute story. :3


it's not quite as awesome (or dark) as other Miyazaki movies, but it is top-notch cute. the underwater scenes are beautiful, too. it's up there as one of my favorite anime movies, along with Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, and Paprika (seems like a lot of favorites but it's really not when you consider how many i've seen).

stupid voice actors. but voice-acting by disney for other miyazaki films has typically been done well so i'm guessing that the voices i hear in this movie aren't going to make my ears melt or anything like that.

Am I the only one who really has absolutely no problem with the voice cast? I mean come on, Liam Neeson was incredible in Fallout 3, Matt Damon in Titan A.E. what's the big deal? Sure they're some siblings of disney peeps but at least they're not actually THEM.

Just get the subbed version like me if you guys are having so much trouble with the dubbed. I always prefer subbed when watching Gibli movies anyways.

noah cyrus and frankie jonas are what stand out, but some of the other ones probably aren't that good either

massy the ghibli movies usually have quality dubs. some of the subs are bad though, the one I had for kiki had a lot of awful added dialogue.

Didn't Uma Thurman dub Nausicaa?  I've known most Ghibli movies to be pretty good dubs.  They're not all over-the-top anime voices (Goku comes to mind) (actually all of DBZ comes to mind).

Just saw it a few hours ago.  I was absolutely in love with it.  I swear I had an almost constant smile on my face throughout the whole thing, I also really like that it had a very old feel to it despite being completely new.  I don't know what much to say about it except that it was beautiful.  Also, I have no idea why anyone would complain about the voice actors--sure, some of the people involved are horrible BUT their voices aren't the problem, it's just THEM.  If people didn't know who the voice actors were they'd have zero things to complain about.

Also my first thought when I saw the voice actor list was "geez this movie must have a lot of little old ladies in it with Betty White and Cloris Leechman" and SURPRISE there were tons of little old ladies in it.

Anyway it was just a very gr8 movie and I loved the whole thing DONE DEAL

i'm not complaining about voice actors; disney usually does a good job is what i'm saying. i haven't seen the movie yet so hopefully it's still good voicing. i'm sure i will enjoy it though. i like miyazaki.

yea every time one of you guys says subs and dubs it becomes less likely i will see this movie


the only one of these movies I have seen is totoro which was good in a real guilty pleasure way

These are okay movies to watch if

1) You are a girl
2) You are with a girl who wants to see them

I watched Mononoke (sp), Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle. While watchable, I wouldn't go out of my way to see them. However I am sure I will see this when my gf buys the DVD eventually.

man, miyazaki movies are not girly. they are beautiful and cute and admitting it does not make you gay. anybody who likes good movies will watch them; people who don't even like anime still like miyazaki movies. man i can't understand how someone could not like movies like Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, etc...

Don't mock mmk's post, he makes a damn good point! There is no correlation between the experience of quality storytelling and the experience of putting a dick to your face. You guys just call it gay because you are jealous you can't make the kind of megabucks this guy does when he tells a damn good story.

I can enjoy these movies... I still got my childhood magic. Too bad none of my friends will see this movie with me and I don't wanna go with family or alone lol :(

My mom went with me (we were going out of town shopping and this town was the closest place showing it so since we were there we went) and when I asked her what she thought she said something like "I really missed going to movies like this, I liked taking you to the movies when you were little."

Also only vaguely related but the previews before the movie were half-and-half, which is better than ALL SHIT.  I've been waiting for Where The Wild Things Are for quite a while now but I had only seen the teaser so seeing the full trailer rocked, and I kinda thought The Fantastic Mr. Fox looked cool too.  Astroboy and the other one about aliens looked shit though.

I heard this movie was actually animated with hand-drawn cells unlike the two previous Ghibli movies, and that it holds the record for the most hand-drawn cells as well. From what I've seen in the trailer the voice acting seems pretty great actually. I've heard Tina Fey does a great job.

Still, I can't really see myself watching this unless I were to go with my younger cousins, though this movie doesn't seem as interesting as Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle.

spirited away was an all time favourite. Hopefully this gets into the books as well .

Yeah this thing was definitely hand-drawn, it was really really beautiful.

actually I forgot about howl's, that's the worst. mononoke is ok just not as good as some of the others and the deer god has a funny face.

Howl's wasn't bad. Sure, the story gets nowhere and the characters and situations are as unrelatable as possible... but it's not bad.

of the ones ive seen i actually like howls the most, i think, just because it has the most interesting things going on. and i liked calcifer. and it was easy to make fun of howl himself which is always a plus for me in movies.

though spirited away had a dr robotnik spider so idk.

I don't agree with the last statement unguided. also maybe you know this, the raccoon dog testicles in pom poko are significant because they are a big part of tanuki lore. if you go to japan you can apparently find raccoon dog statues with large testicles all over. pom poko is good but it references so many japanese legends and spiritual beliefs that it's difficult to understand and kind of boring to an ignorant gaijín like me.

the point is you should watch some others because they are better than mononoke!! these movies do not have much in common with anime shows. you might like my neighbors the yamadas, grave of the fireflies or spirited away
