Title: 3D Dot Game Heroes (PS3)
Post by: DS on August 20, 2009, 08:23:51 am
Anyone saw this new game for PS3 yet? It's being developed by Software (Tenchu, Armored Core) and the release date is in November. So far no release outside Japan has been announced though.

Quote
3D Dot Game Heroes is set in the Kingdom of Dotnia. This world was once made up of 2D sprite art like something out of an old school game. However, wanting to attract more people to the kingdom, the king decided to use technology to make everything 3D. This is where something goes horribly wrong, although just what that is has yet to be specified.

It has a very cool and unique style and I hope it will be released in America/Europe as well because it could be pretty cool!

If they made a Gmae Maker in this style with a lego-like character and environment creation engine it would be so successful.

It kinda reminds me of Darwinia if any of you have played that  :D

It'll only be so long before this type of 3d is not only simple for any type of system to play it, but just as simple to create by just about anyone.

It'll be the next big wave in indie rpgmaking history. I'm predicting it right now.

Wow, looks like one of those lego animated movies.  I get the feeling this game looks very surreal in motion.  I'm also guessing there might be a way for players to customize levels and "sprites".

The character styles, monsters, dungeons, and chickens lead me to believe this is an NES Zelda or Dragon Warrior parody in particular.

Right about now I am wishing I had a PS3 and wishing this game would be for PC at the exact same time. . .

One much more apparent thing here is that it is very exactly Zelda

Which doesn't mean this isn't awesome

Or hilarious; Zelda on PS3..

Wow. Shouldn't they be copying Dragon Warrior or something, rather than Zelda?

Even the music is next to copied from Zelda ;x.

But yeah the few seconds of just actual walking around we saw looked cool. It looks like fluid lego.

Too bad they didn't make everything out of pixels, there was a shockwave when the dragon landed, and the menu/dialogue is very modern. Oh well.

A combination of Dragon Warrior and the original NES Zelda would make sense. Original Zelda was graphically on par with the NES DWs. Plus, they are both about heroes and stuff.

If they copied dragon warrior, there wouldn't be any point in the 3d graphics since everything would be turn based anyhow. Plus they couldn't make everything out of pixels. It would be too visually incomprehensible if the light particles and shadows were forced into quanta-sized pixel shapes. The shock wave is excessive though, the dragon would have made just as much an impact if he simply dented the pixels he landed on (probably make the fight interesting too if the hero tripped trying to go across the uneven terrain). Don't worry though, I'm sure the inconsistencies present play into the RPG plot somehow.

I still don't have a PS3 myself, but I'm glad that if/when I get one, I'll have more than one game I would be willing to buy for it.

This game is too pixelated! Not a shred of anti-aliasing anywhere! More proof that the PS3 just can't live up to the name.

Well if you like Zelda or even a Spelunker fan. You have a high Probability of liking this game...

Doesn't look half bad but dam that sword is big and it get long like a penis but the only different is that sword gets bigger then a Penis and if it had if it had real characteristics it would probably be harder too.

FAQ
Yes I just Compared a sword in a game to a Penis and This also means it near the end of the world.

Silly Dday

Also I was already hyped at the graphics at first, then I was hyped because it was like NES Zelda which I adore, and I guess Spelunker is interesting too

But you guys, did you know you can actually make your own hero in this game?

Since all the graphics are 3d pixels(blocks)

you can do 3d pixel art!

This game looks seriously good. It's probally the only PS3 game I can think of that really jumps out at me. A few more cool games and maybe i'll get one. Esp. as the new slim PS3 is almost afordable.

I'm actualy pretty tempted , i like the art and i'm a zelda fan so why not?
i'm sorry, but that giant sword is just plain cheating!

EDIT: i hope they include an adventure editor :) it would be so easy to make art for this game, they could include an art editor as well, but would they? doubt it.

further edit: its almost like there trying to bring snes rpgs into the future... i wonder if it uses the marching squares graphic algorithm?

Bumping a very old topic, but this just came out a few days ago I believe. Has anyone tried it out yet?

I plan on picking it up today after work and then messing around in the character creator before jumping into the game.

Oh man finally! This game is great, I'm on the last dungeon so unfortunately I'm about to beat it but there are two extra modes you unlock, plus all the items/sidequests/events I missed my first run through the re playability seems pretty high. The only thing that kind of stinks is some events are time sensitive, so completing a dungeon will erase it out of existence unless you happened to stumble on it beforehand.

Also there are two hero databases I found to download/upload character creations:

http://www.3ddotgameheroes.com/hallofheroes/ - Official character database

http://www.thegeorama.com/3ddotgameheroes/viewforum.php?f=12&sid=6acf896e304aa34ef4164df32a0d6745 - Since you can't upload copyrighted characters on the official site this is a good alternative.

So I did pick this up today and it's incredibly fun! The game it shares the most in common with is definitely A Link to the Past, which is not a bad thing at all.

pig style, what's with the doors in dungeons that won't open with regular keys? They have a red marking on the map or something? I've cleared the first two dungeons and couldn't get past those doors.

so to the guys who have played this what differentiates it from zelda, like, at all?  because based on the videos I've seen it literally looks like the exact same thing.  same music, same enemies, BOULDERS FALLING DOWN CLIFFS I mean what's up with that.  I'm sure it's LOADS OF FUN but what's the deal?

Haha, yeah, watched the trailer and it looks like they were trying to remake A Link To The Past. EXACT same music, I swear. And that 'house' that turns from 2D to 3D looks JUST like ALTTP.

Either way, showed my roommate who has a PS3 the trailer and he's stoked on it, so I think he's gonna buy it, which means I get to mooch off of him and play it. Awesome.

Well, there are certainly more towns than there are in the 2D Zeldas. The overworld is also a bit trickier to navigate in some places. I was trying to get through the desert last night and it was driving me nuts, because it has that cliche moving quicksand that acts like one way conveyor belts all over the place.

There is so much that this game has in common that it's ridiculous, but surprisingly the atmosphere is completely original. While every gameplay element seems to be ripped from either LoZ or LttP, the atmosphere is completely unique. This game has very amusing writing, and I love the jokes. The Mega Man reference after clearing one of the first temples was pretty funny.
Any online features?
Except being able to download characters other people have made, which isn't even done ingame? Nope.

The music comes from a variety of different games mixed together. I heard a little bit of Metroid mixed into some of the dungeons, and the character select screen sounds like Dragon Quest. I'm sure there are other themes mixed into the music too, but I'm not able to point them out.

I saw an ad for this online that popped up in front of me and I was genuinely interested in something I only saw in an online ad for the first time in my life and they failed to show the name of the game/what system, either that or it was so fast I missed it

Man, the more I play this, the more I fall in love with it. 3D Dot Game Heroes is nothing but a completely over the top love letter to the days of old, when gaming wasn't about online multiplayer, downloadable content (even though this game may end up with it, maybe?), games lacking substance to due a focus on graphics, etc. It's just plain fun, and emulates old school gaming so well that I feel like a part of me that I grew out of several years ago is back whenever I play this game.

My brother, who loves to declare that he doesn't care much for games anymore (which is partly true though I got him addicted to Elements, the flash card game), was over yesterday was quite interested in the game as well because everything it emulates is what he grew up with too. 3D Dot Game Heroes just brings back so many feelings, memories, sensations.

People like to criticize games that only seem to succeed due to nostalgia. Well, if loving nostalgia really is so wrong these days, then I certainly don't want to be right.

Sorry UPRC you probably figured this out already but there are different colored keys for those specific doors, you can find them in dungeons or purchase them for about 1k gold a pop or (minor spoilers)
And yeah I love this game, I'm actually at the last dungeon but I've missed a ton of stuff so I'm combing through all the areas trying to find all the little secrets. Also in case anyone was curious the 3 classes you choose from do affect your stats:

Hero: 5 health / 3 magic
Prince: 4 health / 4 magic
Scholar: 3 health / 5 magic

And males get +1 to weapon power while females have -1 cost to magic. So there's a little variety, I think I've found at least one place where the gender of the player does matter, but I haven't been able to see if it's just a change in dialogue or what. ALSO you can change your hero everytime you load up the game, but the name you pick stays.
