We are discussing the possibility of restoring GW Radio, except in the form of a static playlist instead of a live streaming radio show. This means that we would gather all the material that is to be featured beforehand, and have them added to a looping playlist consisting of MP3 files that would be available to GWers at all times. All submitted audio by GWers, be it radio shows, comedy skits or albums, would be included in this playlist which would eventually become so vast that no two plays would be the same.
This is good because:
- It's GW-created audio material
- The chance of you coming across something that you really like is far greater than when GW artists are trying to force their albums onto you to no avail.
- Great outlet for our musicians. Fresh content will be directly featured and available
- Play it in a popup window and perhaps applications like Winamp, Windows Media Player and Foobar depending on the format.
- Hit shuffle if the song sucks and get something completely different by a different GW member.
- Hours worth of content. Two plays will never be the same!
Post your thoughts here.
-
I think this is a good idea
we need more music though and gw group projects that don't die off before they're done
-
Yeah but there are already tons of GW artist albums, so we do have a bit of starter content.
-
Nice, GW radio was a fun time. You should definitely start it up again. Maybe do a community board for the radio djs to discuss and maybe get together with eachother to do talkshows/podcasts or whatever. I used to hosted a show for a while and I ran with a 1960's theme from radio commercials and stuff.
GO FO IT

We could have a GW Radio link up the top that says "Now playing: blah blah" so people can click it and listen.
-
What you can do with shoutcast is that you can have songs playing all the time (looping, but you can't control what plays yourself, I think). But what's good about is that a DJ can jump in to the radio to start DJing, and it'll stop playing the pre-selected content. This way we can have all those GW songs etc playing, but also have DJ premiers for troudabours etc.
-
You could have pre-recorded podcasts that run with the same system. They just go out at a specific time for the sake of discussion?
-
yeah if could implement rami's idea into it, I would be for this. I think the main appeal of Gw radio in the first place was that it was live and being done by a DJ, hence like a radio. I don't know how much activity you would get with pre-recorded stuff, but if we can get more and more people doing stuff live on it, I think it would be pretty cool.
-
Would be cool if we had a 3 hour compostition comp or something that went out.
-
I've been itching to get back into GW Radio, but if that is how you will do it then I doubt I will.
-
Oh man, I would love to do some shows for this again. I could pre-record a 30 minute to an hour radio show and do that, but part of what made GW Radio cool was the interaction between the DJ and people on IRC.
Maybe it could be something like, record a live show, then air it a few more times over the week, until the DJ does another show. That way the show can be live, and people who missed it would get another chance to hear it. Also, since the show would be recorded, it could be uploaded somewhere to be listened to any time.
Just an idea, but I'm looking forward to this!
-
maybe this is me but listening to a pre-recorded show isn't what i want when i pop on GW radio but i am not the only person with an opinion but this is mine
-
This sounds like an excellent idea. The music scene here seems to have an equal if not stronger following than games. I'm definitely willing to help out on this in any way I can. I can host a program or two if possible.

It's kind of unrealistic to expect anything more, even from a commercial radio source. On "dead" days, it would be good to have a community playlist going on. I always find that kind of thing soothing for some reason.
-
no i know what you are saying and what i mean is I wouldn't bother tuning in unless someone was doing a live show. we obviously don't have the manpower/resources/realistic expecations to have a live show going all the time
-
Maybe we could do live shows, and then when there is nothing live it could play blocks of music with previously recorded shows too? Like, for this hour there's some music, then a live show, then a recorded show from the day before, then more music, etc.
It would give it more variety than being a glorified playlist on the off hours and give people who missed shows a chance to hear them, but then the people who just want live content just don't tune in at those times.
-
Is there any way to choose what you want to listen to?

this is a really really great idea

We used to have a schedule set up to when the djs will play.
But seriously I'd love to do this again.
Anyway pretty much everyone is in the same consensus that GW radio should start again, so I say lets do it drule.
-
my connection is too shit unfortunately
-
Im bringing this topic back from the dead, I came back to GW with the hopes of reclaiming my old radio show, I honestly miss doing my hour long shows and chatting in IRC and introducing GW members to some new and maybe old and forgotten gems. I think it was a great, interactive aspect of GW and something alot of people would be into if it came back, with that big radio button at the top of the screen and all.... Bring back GW Radio!!!!
-
you wish.... you wish...
-
yeah bring it back bring it back
let afura be an admin first odrer of bidness bring back the radi o so we can communicate with the other vaults
-
i missed this topic totally!
wow!
-
hey this is a fucking good idea
all we need is like 3 people to rise above all the 'let this pit of embarassment rot...' complacency and do a little show. Hey guys, want to make a show? if you need any j-ster correspondence, you got it.
i will record some skits and submit music
-
And I would totally listen to your shows as well. If I had a microphone I would so do this! But maybe I will play some music without one every now and again!
SOooooooo let's make a list and get started! someone PM an admin to organize this properly with a little button and shit this would be very good for GW
-
Doing GW Radio was pretty fun. After a while, doing the GW Troubadour albums got pretty old, but I liked to go on and play music or talk about whatever I wanted. It would be pretty cool if we could find a way to have multiple people talking at the same time and I'm pretty sure this is possible with skype or something. But yeah, I'd be interested in doing this if we were able to get the server back up.
-
Yeah, but since I think we're moving sway from the live format and to a more 'radio on demand' sort of service (like most television basically is these days) it'd probably work. I don't think that too many people would listen but you'd get a lot more than if it were to be live.
-
lol didn't the old gw radio only ever average like 2-3 listeners per show and thats way back when we had like a million active members? itll be interesting to see how this turns out since now gw itself only ever averages 2-3 active members at any given time.
well well....if it isn't the 'naysayer' himself...
and yeah this is cool because it would be a loop of shows and music which would accumulate an audience over time, 1 or 2 people at a time. i think most active members of GW would be curious enough to listen at some point, even weeks after a show had been up.
like i am imagining the exact format of the grand theft auto radio stations except we only have one.
i am Brain Storming.
-
GW Radio was horrible and what we described in this topic is nothing like the old GW Radio, so no.
-
so no to what?
I didn't see anyone saying this was exactly the same idea as the old GW radio.
-
Well no to cheri's post since she was the one who bumped the topic.
-
"quote" plz
-
i'd be up for recording little shows but i doubt many people would be listening to the radio enough for it to be notices ya know\?
-
Psyburn should interview otomon
-
we are getting new members btw, very few but they're coming now.
-
idk I liked having my multiple radio shows back in the day.
always willing to contribute though.
-
are you going to help with this drule? otherwise someone who knows what they're doing should organize this, it would be very good for gw imo
-
"Podcasts"/pre-recorded mp3s would make more sense. You would never get the people online all at once because we're from all over the planet.
Best bet is to have a podcast recording drive, record what you like using the tools of your choice, it gets validated by someone with a red name or even someone who cares then they post an article on the main page with a synopsis when it is released.
That said, it would be nice to premier the new troubs on the radio.
-
I know what I'm doing. I have more than enough experience with shoutcast and shit. Just give me the music to be played and I can run it on one of my other computers all day.
-
i don't think you get it ug.
you aren't going to be playing anything on your pc. it is not going to be a live streaming radio.
