Title: turn off laptop fan/mysterious problem??
Post by: crone_lover720 on August 29, 2009, 05:36:53 am
today my computer started doing something weird where it makes this stupid sound kind of like a motor revving, or like running textured plastic (like a bumpy ruler) over an edge. this starts happening out of nowhere and when it stops I can hear the fan running, but there's a regular ticking sound like the fan's hitting something. next time the revving sound happens I'd like to turn off the fan in DEVICE MANAGER or something and see if it helps, idk if this is possible

in any case, if you have any idea what else this sound could be tell me. it's really noisy.

no never turn off the fan, you might cause your pc to overheat.

Being on a desktop makes this alot easier.

for now just investigate whats going on.  Open your case and just let the pc run and pay attention to where the sound may be coming from.

if that doesnt produce results ,unplug your computer and let it it sit for a few mins just to reduce the risk of you electrocuting  yourself.
Open your case up and check your fan, get a small vaccum or a low powered one and suck the dust out of the fans, spin them with your fingers and just examine where the sound is coming from.

Frankly I think one of the propellers of your fan broke off and its off getting banged somewhere.

I mean just turn it off temporarily to see if the sound stops, then I can take it apart

if this is anything like my previous laptop it's very difficult to get apart aside from the few removable panels on the bottom

PS I'm not sure if it works, I read somewhere that to discharge the capacitors you need to hit the power button a few times when the computer is unplugged (the fans will spin a few times)

Turning off your fan is likely to just make your computer lock up/shut off so it's not going to help you fix this problem.  Opening it up is your only real choice unfortunately.

Yeah, given your skill level with disassembling things and reassembling them you may may or may not want to consider paying for a professional to look at it. That said, computer repairs are notoriously expensive so it's a conundrum for you there.

When I take things apart for the first time I like to photograph them with my digital camera. I also put a piece of paper on a level surface and put screws on the paper (without them rolling away) and next to them I write where they came from. This way when it comes to backtracking you have some annotated screws and you can just work back through your camera snaps to make sure you don't mess it up.

You might need to purchase a special screwdriver set depending on the make of your laptop also.

Check your warranty before doing any surgery, you never know - you might still be covered.

Some desktop cases are relatively easy to open by the way.  I dont think he necessarily has to take it to a shop to get it opened.

Oh sweet, I'm not the only person who does this.

I don't think it quite warrants the baking of a cake or a facebook group though XD

I will take any excuse to bake a cake, sir.

I'll use icing to label where my screws go and use cakes from now on instead of paper.

I bought a wanky shit demon hooded top last night and it's just a picture of him grinning manically with a "CAKE?" speechbubble above his head. I will post pics when I get it.

We've just ruined this topic you do realise.

Not really, we've already given him the answers so until he tries them out to see if the problem is solved or not nothing is really necessary in this thread.

uhhh turning off the fan for a second won't cause his laptop to melt, it'll just get hot. you'd be better off though getting a program (i think speedfan will let you do it) that lets you control the fans and turning them on when the computer is cold rather than turning them off when the computer needs to run them.

the only moving parts in a laptop are the fans and the drives. make sure you don't have a disc in the dvd drive or w/e, windows will occasionally spin it. when fans get old or off balance they get noisy also, harddrives too. another possibility could be a loose speaker wire or some sort of interference but i think this'd be obvious!

i think out of everything the disc in the drive is the most likely. if you have a floppy drive, which is unlikely if your computer was made in the last century, they can sound kinda like what you're describing

If you do end up having to open up your laptop, search around online for instructions for that particular model's disassembly.

depending on how hot it normally is in there WITH the fan yeah man it could overheat p. fast with it off, laptops are not known for being very cool

Laptops are tricky to take apart. I had to replace my laptop keyboard on a Toshiba Satellite M-45 (trash, btw), which was a total bitch because the part above the keyboard you have to remove was extremely flimsy and was jam-packed with circuitry in such a way that if you didn't follow correct procedure in removing it your sound system was fucked or you'd just have a really ugly looking laptop. Not to mention the keyboard ribbon was too short so you had to replace the keyboard and slip the ribbon in blind. I digress. While opening the back up shouldn't be a problem, you should always exercise caution with something that expensive.

But if your comment was from past experience, then I feel for you man. It's okay to have problems.

I don't have a disk in. I might try something like speedfan, but the sound hasn't been happening so if there was something stuck in the fan maybe it came out.

What I like to do when I have a problematic fan is, I'll try to stop it from spinning for a second with my finger, and see if the noise stops. Usually you can find out which fan it is within only a few seconds. Course this would be harder to do with a laptop, but still possible. If you have to have the machine running while pieces of the case are off, be careful to not touch anything else not a fan.

If it is a fan, you may have to purchase a new part (if you feel competent in being able to properly install it), or send it in for repairs/warranty.
