Title: Our digital identities in online games
Post by: ryuubu on September 16, 2009, 01:33:54 am
Hi, I'm doing an assignment that looks at the way our identity and language change on the internet, specifically in online games (with attention paid to MMORPGs).

My aim is to find out how our digital selves are different from our real-world counterparts, and why. Also other features such as networking (joining guild, making friends), language (the jargon of MMORPGs, language used by yourself and others) and other identity related topics are of interest (why you chose this class etc.)

If you can think of any other interesting questions, feel free to add them.

I'll have to note that there's a possibility I'll use any replies here in my assignment. If that's a problem please tell me you don't want your comments to be included.

[EDITED ][/EDITED]

Updated or new questions have an *
--

*Do you feel a sense of community in your game?

*How do you talk in, or about this game? (Are there message boards, chat, etc.)

*In your games, did you ever join a guild, or faction? Why? If so, did you also interact with people regularly that were not in this guild?

*Do you share any in-jokes with people in your guild/game?

*What was your goal in this game? Is this goal similar to others who played this game?

Did you ever do anything like a dungeon party (raid)? Or another type of group activity? Who did you do this with?

Were there any types of players you disliked? Why?

*How did you treat players that you disliked? How did you treat them or talk to them?

What do you consider to be 'noobish' behaviour? How do you feel about this?

*How do you know a player is an expert?

Was there anyone you avoided in game/were afraid of?

What rules were imposed in this game? (i.e. no griefing, no swearing) Did you stick to these rules? What were the consequences?

*Were there words or phrases that you used in the game that you wouldn't use with a real conversation partner? (Is there any jargon specific to your game of choice?)

What class of character did you choose? What features of this character appealed to you?

*Do you treat the game world as a real place in your mind? (This question is a little bit abstract, answer how you will)

Do your characters have different personalities?

So would you talk in real life as you do in the game?

Did you know anyone from both the game world and the real world? How do you think they were different?

Did you ever roleplay in these games?

What do you think of roleplayers?

---

Thanks!

In your games, did you ever join a guild, or faction? Why?
No, I am separate from most clans and whatever but generally play to a standard that earns their respect

Did you ever do anything like a dungeon party? Or another type of group activity? Who did you do this with?
I used to play Diablo 2 with my friends from real life

Were there any types of players you disliked? Why?
Grinders and micromanagers who spend literally hours just playing and not having fun. I don't get it.

How did you treat players that you disliked?
I use the old "no swear insults" and belittle them with insulting questions and insinuations but stay polite to follow rules

How did you know someone was a 'noob'?
"how do i spawn"

Were there words or phrases that you used in the game that you wouldn't use with a real conversation partner?
Respawn is really the only word I think is silly in real life. I don't play too many MMOs though.

What class of character did you choose? What features of this character appealed to you?
I like support characters or, if it's impossible to find a good group, characters that can deal a lot of damage but not take so much (berserkers and the like)

Do you characters have different personalities?
No. They are all me.

So would you talk in real life as you do in the game?
I talk in the game as I talk in real life, never the other way around.

Did you ever roleplay in these games?
There is a time and a place for roleplaying, and usually it's hard to find other people who aren't douchewizards.

What do you think of roleplayers?
See above. Most roleplayers are not very good at it.

In your games, did you ever join a guild, or faction? Why?

I play mmos for the social aspect of them so yeah joining a guild is one of my priorities... but most guilds dont take low lvls so you have to lvl up if you want to join any good ones, the ones with mostly low lvls disband really easy as low levels have more of a tendency to leave a guild.

Did you ever do anything like a dungeon party? Or another type of group activity? Who did you do this with?

I love helping out my guild mates or just random people I see in a dungeon,I always end up doing group/party quests.

Were there any types of players you disliked? Why?

People who only care about lvling up and not just playing for fun.

How did you treat players that you disliked?

I swore at them using internet slang and acted like a little kid.

How did you know someone was a 'noob'?

Because they showed no skill even performing simple in-game tasks.

Were there words or phrases that you used in the game that you wouldn't use with a real conversation partner?

N/A

What class of character did you choose? What features of this character appealed to you?

I always make a Knigth/Heavy Armored dude because I like Strength about all,I hate casting spells or shooting arrows,I wish to kill my opopnent in one hit.

Do you characters have different personalities?

I try to make/act as original as posible while in the game, because you cant do that offline.

So would you talk in real life as you do in the game?

I do it all the time, which leads me to be isolated from non-players/people who dont wish to reveal that they play.

Did you ever roleplay in these games?

Yes,I roleplayed alot, makes the game more fun,and also allowed me to meet people with the same interests as me.

What do you think of roleplayers?

I think they are the virtual version of hippies, minus the drugs.

Please, do continue, people, the more information I get the easier it is to draw conclusions.

Thanks again.

In your games, did you ever join a guild, or faction? Why?
I usually try to, but the social aspect is pretty important for me. That said I don't want to be in a shitty guild. Doing top level raids and competitive pvp is important too.

Did you ever do anything like a dungeon party? Or another type of group activity? Who did you do this with?
Like a LAN party? Yeah, my friend who has played pretty much every MMO with me would bring his comp over and we'd play, my neighbor would join sometimes.

Were there any types of players you disliked? Why?
Only in Lineage II, the insanely skilled... stalkers/pkers. and sometimes the really overbearing guild leader who expects too much out of you.

How did you treat players that you disliked?
In this case they mostly spoke mandarin or korean so there wasn't much i could do. in game i just stayed in town for a while, warning people about them in chat.

How did you know someone was a 'noob'?
Usually they'll ask a stupid question or really suck at playing their class. Like they'd just be missing some very obvious element of their class.

Were there words or phrases that you used in the game that you wouldn't use with a real conversation partner?
There was a time when I was an angsty teen and playing video games where I'd use all sorts of words like bitch faggot whore all of those. I mostly used those in CS and the Specialists, an HL mod... but I never really said these kinds of things in WoW. There was one time I was on an alt and I said it as a joke when I was dueling someone. They didn't know it was me and reported me, hah.

What class of character did you choose? What features of this character appealed to you?
I usually tried to choose characters that have a diverse skill set or supporting roles. Usually these character types have interesting challenges to overcome and as a player they're really fun to play competitively with especially in pvp another favorite of mine. In Star Wars Galaxies I played a Carbineer... it had good CC but relatively weak single target capabilities. In Lineage II I played an orc shaman, again strong support. In Wow I played a druid... same deal, many talents, lots of ways to play.

Do you characters have different personalities?
I don't really think so. Through my MMO's I've usually only had one main character. Since I had stuck with each mmo for a long time (more than a year for ea) I changed over the course of that time due to real life and probably in game things. So.... just growing up.

So would you talk in real life as you do in the game?
I probably wouldn't take as in depth with game vocab. I also don't really get into competitive fights in real life like I do in pvp battles... I definitely don't use as many curse words in real life.

Did you ever roleplay in these games?
I joined a pvprp server in wow, it wasn't that interesting because i felt like i couldn't make any real friends since we were all just acting. i always laughed a little when that one dude would just explode in chat and shatter some people's rp.

What do you think of roleplayers?
it's great, i used to roleplay on these message boards.

ps I would read this if you haven't already it applies pretty well:
http://www.mud.co.uk/richard/hcds.htm

i have a lot of other resources like that one if you want, just send me a pm.

In your games, did you ever join a guild, or faction? Why?
No. Because I don't play games on the internet.

Did you ever do anything like a dungeon party? Or another type of group activity? Who did you do this with?
No, unless you mean 'BDSM cyber sex in a dungeon party' or something, then no.

Were there any types of players you disliked? Why?
WoW players in general.

How did you treat players that you disliked?
Told them they have no life and are obviously fat.

How did you know someone was a 'noob'?
When people started calling dumb asses \/\/#0 typ l1ek d1z

Was there anyone you avoided in game/were afraid of?
I was afraid of sexual predators and fat people.

What rules were imposed in this game? (i.e. no griefing, no swearing) Did you stick to these rules? What were the consequences?
No swearing. Fuck that shit, I love swearing. I got kicked out of a game.

Were there words or phrases that you used in the game that you wouldn't use with a real conversation partner?
'no girls allowed.'

What class of character did you choose? What features of this character appealed to you?
Fuckmeister. My favorite abilities are to jerk off to gain +1337 penis size in inches and fuck a girl which hangs my nutsack even lower.

Do you characters have different personalities?
One was the sweet, cute little innocent guy. The other was a demon fucker.

So would you talk in real life as you do in the game?
Only if a hot chick played it.

Did you know anyone from both the game world and the real world? How do you think they were different?
Nope. They're different because one of them are really fucking fat without a life, and the other is a rich millionaire who gets more chicks than you.

Did you ever roleplay in these games?
Only if Blonde_Princess_Elena69 logs on.

What do you think of roleplayers?
Imagination is more important than knowledge.

In your games, did you ever join a guild, or faction? Why?
No, joining a guild involves a lot of commitment. I play only to have fun, and when it becomes a necessity to play a game because other people depend on me, it's not appealing to me.

Did you ever do anything like a dungeon party? Or another type of group activity? Who did you do this with?
In any MMO I played, I usually didn't cohort with more than 2 or 3 people, probably because the work vs payoff isn't so great.

Were there any types of players you disliked? Why?
The worst types of players are the ones that treat others badly because their skill level is higher.

How did you treat players that you disliked?
Probably cursing at them or refusing to play with them depending on what kind of game.

How did you know someone was a 'noob'?
Usually new players ask a lot of questions, or do things that they are unaware of what the consequences are.

Was there anyone you avoided in game/were afraid of?
Moderators, cheaters

What rules were imposed in this game? (i.e. no griefing, no swearing) Did you stick to these rules? What were the consequences?
In runescape there is a rule against swearing; I don't remember why but about a decade ago I must have sworn because logging onto my old account about a year ago I had been permanently muted.

Were there words or phrases that you used in the game that you wouldn't use with a real conversation partner?
spamming, spawning, camping, level up

What class of character did you choose? What features of this character appealed to you?
I like the bruiser types: big, slow, and powerful

Do you characters have different personalities?
Usually just me, though my GuildWars guy Chuck Falcon was preacher of womens' subservience

So would you talk in real life as you do in the game?
I use a lot of bigger words in real life just because typing them takes too long.

Did you know anyone from both the game world and the real world? How do you think they were different?
Everyone I know from the real world acts the same in the game.

Did you ever roleplay in these games?
See above. That's about it.

What do you think of roleplayers?
Kind of weird. I'm not into the whole thespian thing either though, so I think it's more of my own issues.

In your games, did you ever join a guild, or faction? Why?
I tested a low-end MMO(for CASH) and was required to. My clan was called IBS SURRPISE and I was the scourge of clean undergarment proponents everywhere. I was called the grandmaster of splash damage by some of my cohorts.

Did you ever do anything like a dungeon party? Or another type of group activity? Who did you do this with?
Usually I would go into the game areas and hide in the corner and say generally rude and inconsiderate things to anyone willing to listen. Not necessarily about the other players, but in general. Discussions of the sexual tendencies(and frequency) of the Ukrainian Prime Minister was a common theme for the debates I would have with myself. The logic here is that it would distract them into allowing me an unfair advantage. The key problem here is that most people who play multiplayer games do not have the prerequisite english language comprehension abilities necessary to explore the full scope of the things I was saying. Usually I would find them hovering over my dead body saying LOL WUT? and that's about as much of an advantage I could ever gain.

Were there any types of players you disliked? Why?
The ones that were better than me, which was usually a great number of them. I do not appreciate being bested in any way by people who throw their lives away to play multiplayer online games.

How did you treat players that you disliked?
Much the same as players that I liked; With passionate, unabiding disrespect and insincerity. The only people that you can trust less than those who fail to gain your respect are those who do.

How did you know someone was a 'noob'?
If they were playing this game, I would say that, by default, they were either a "noob" or someone wishing to inflict punishment upon themselves. Unfortunately I am unable to gather much excitement on the topic of discerning between the two.

Was there anyone you avoided in game/were afraid of?
Lithuanians mostly(ghastly people), but it's possible to mask your ethnic origins online, thereby making my guidelines somewhat difficult to follow.

What rules were imposed in this game? (i.e. no griefing, no swearing) Did you stick to these rules? What were the consequences?
Don't make fun of the developers, because they apparently reserved the right to use ethnic slurs freely, and whine about it for quite some time if any of it was directed at them. Because of my outstanding familiarity with the English language, however, I was able to circumvent this in profoundly inventive ways where the developer was unaware that I was having a hard chuckle at their expense. This is quite easy to do when you are playing a game developed by people who are several thousand years behind your own evolutionary cycle.

Were there words or phrases that you used in the game that you wouldn't use with a real conversation partner?
No. My mother is as aware of my distaste for those of the midget persuasion as the players of multiplayer online games I have played with are.

What class of character did you choose? What features of this character appealed to you?
I would usually play as blacks because white people are always afraid of being cannibalized by dark-souled people from the jungle, and I felt that this was a good way to tap into that fear.

Do you characters have different personalities?
Certainly! I always made sure to keep a dumpy, naked white male character handy for whenever I felt like a black cannibalistic character wasn't setting the right mood.

So would you talk in real life as you do in the game?
Do you think that I would not notice you asking the same question twice? I will invent a replacement question and answer it below:

No, I do not wish to ever do that. It is gross and distasteful and I would hate to see you ever ask anybody that question again.

Did you know anyone from both the game world and the real world? How do you think they were different?
I was testing the game and knew quite a few of the testers in real life, so I unfortunately had the displeasure of knowing them digitally and physically. I would equate this to being "double the pain" or something to that effect. The only plus is that you can say things about the questionable nature of their upbringing both online and in person, but that's really where the advantages end.

Did you ever roleplay in these games?
To a point. I would pretend to be Nigerian businessmen with can't miss proposals, and frustrated KGB operatives threatening to shut down the server due to non-compliance with State Security protocol. Unfortunately I could never find anybody willing to roleplay as stupid suburban american housewives willing to throw their social security number at me, or frightened Belarusians fearfully guarding their wooden shacks from the mighty Committee for State Security. Oh well. C'est la vie!

What do you think of roleplayers?
I think the death penalty would be sufficient, but I don't necessary believe anything that formal would be absolutely essential. Line them up in the streets, give them a long beating, and put the survivors to work in the factories for slave wages.

In your games, did you ever join a guild, or faction? Why?
I've joined guilds in every MMO I've played because uh.. well, it's handy to have a bunch of people to call on when you need something.

Did you ever do anything like a dungeon party? Or another type of group activity? Who did you do this with?
I don't know what this is.

Were there any types of players you disliked? Why?
Not really. Even the ones who take the game too seriously are hilarious to have around.

How did you treat players that you disliked?
Same as the ones I like, with strict mocking.

How did you know someone was a 'noob'?
Uh, what? This question is still badly worded. What do I class as a noob? Someone who is new to a game, and lacks the experience to play well. Or someone who has played for a long time and is still unbelievably terrible. Or someone who has played a lot and is really good, and takes it out on others. Or anyone at all.

Was there anyone you avoided in game/were afraid of?
No, except on PVP servers where you avoid/are terrified of everyone.

What rules were imposed in this game? (i.e. no griefing, no swearing) Did you stick to these rules? What were the consequences?
None of these. Most MMOs have a swear filter which I have turned off.

Were there words or phrases that you used in the game that you wouldn't use with a real conversation partner?
Uh, most of them? I guess if you count using the real words in place of acronyms (ie: What the Fuck instead of WTF) then not as many. But yeah, like others have said, I'd never say any game-specific phrases irl. Like GG.

What class of character did you choose? What features of this character appealed to you?
In the olden days I always played priest/cleric, as I like having the power of healing over somebody. But I usually end up defaulting to a tank class, which is what I am best at.

Do you characters have different personalities?
No, they all just have my personality.

So would you talk in real life as you do in the game?
What the hell? I just answered this.

Did you know anyone from both the game world and the real world? How do you think they were different?
I've known a few people IRL who've played WoW, and apart from firing less firebolts out of their fingertips irl they are pretty much the same. I met my current gf on TF2 and apart from acting much more shy and quiet irl she is the same.

Did you ever roleplay in these games?
I used to more when I was younger. It's fun being immersed in a game. Unfortunately as you grow older and more cynical, you notice how ridiculous the concept is. However, I still enjoy playing on RP servers, as they are usually full of people who take the game too seriously (read: are fun to mess with).

What do you think of roleplayers?
Misguided, I guess. But hey, they are having fun playing the game they want to, so meh.

In your games, did you ever join a guild, or faction? Why?
I joined one in Guild Wars because a real-life friend of mine got me an invite and it allowed us to access different game modes.

Did you ever do anything like a dungeon party (raid)? Or another type of group activity? Who did you do this with?
I couple of times in the game's story mode. It was necessary for players of my skill level to have help from friends to get through some sections of the game. I also played some group PvP a couple of times.

Were there any types of players you disliked? Why?
Most of them. I found that people were often rather obnoxious.

How did you treat players that you disliked?
Mostly I ignored them. Occasionally I would shout absurdities and offer to sell items that didn't exist.

What do you consider to be 'noobish' behaviour? How do you feel about this?
I don't know. I wasn't aware that people still used the word 'noob'.

Was there anyone you avoided in game/were afraid of?
No.

What rules were imposed in this game? (i.e. no griefing, no swearing) Did you stick to these rules? What were the consequences?
I don't know. I often tried to grief or infuriate other players but they didn't understand.

Were there words or phrases that you used in the game that you wouldn't use with a real conversation partner?
"WTS", "Charizard", "Diglett", "Bidoof", "supreme playerhate". I think there were others but most were similarly unfunny.

What class of character did you choose? What features of this character appealed to you?
The Elementalist. Many other male players had chosen the female Elementalist and I thought that this was hilarious and played out a poorly executed parody.
I also played a voodoo doctor type chap that I can't remember the correct class for. I picked him because he looked really out of place with bright coloured clothing and people danding in towns would run away in towns when I tried to 'hug' them.

Do you characters have different personalities?
Not so much. I would pick different personalities to try independent of character.

So would you talk in real life as you do in the game?
No, in real life I am generally more polite and often more serious.

Did you know anyone from both the game world and the real world? How do you think they were different?
Yes. They were much more polite and serious in the game - they had invested a lot more time and thought into it then I had.

Did you ever roleplay in these games?
Not in the way most people would think of it. I roleplayed as other players of the game instead of pretending to be my character.

What do you think of roleplayers?
I don't think about them.

in your games, did you ever join a guild, or faction? Why?
A couple of times in World of Warcraft. And Soldat.

Did you ever do anything like a dungeon party? Or another type of group activity? Who did you do this with?
I can't recall but I'm 99% certain that I have not.

Were there any types of players you disliked? Why?
ohai gif me halp need gull need help wif boss pls gimme one gold just 1 gold plx

How did you treat players that you disliked?
/ignore

How did you know someone was a 'noob'?
They have more than one word in their name(s).

Were there words or phrases that you used in the game that you wouldn't use with a real conversation partner?
"Go die in a fucking fire. Reported."

What class of character did you choose? What features of this character appealed to you?
Female elfoid.(s)

Do you characters have different personalities?
what

So would you talk in real life as you do in the game?
Yes because I usually talk in game the same as I would talk normally in real life.

In your games, did you ever join a guild, or faction? Why?
I usually start factions, but if I have ever joined one it was probably so I could get sweet stuff for free.

Did you ever do anything like a dungeon party (raid)? Or another type of group activity? Who did you do this with?
I've only done one raid and it was with a bunch of strangers on the same level as me. I sort of messed it up halfway through and got us killed, but they were pretty cool about it.

Were there any types of players you disliked? Why?
I've never been a fan of players who delve too much into the stats or item aspects of the game. I find it pretty distracting when 50% of the player chat text is "<Du'uraggath> SELLING/TRADING FLAME SWORD OF SWO'GORTH FOR BOOST RUNE!!!!!" or when you talk to a player and the conversation slowly drifts into GEAR TALK. It is the most boring and trite shit.

How did you treat players that you disliked?
I don't think I did anything about them.

What do you consider to be 'noobish' behaviour? How do you feel about this?
Wow, where do I start? First off, a noob is someone who is new to the game, but a "n0b" is someone who's plain dumb. "nobb" or "n0obb" are variations of "n0b", while "nob", "nogg" or "nooby" are variations of "noob". "nop" and "nobbb" can also be used as substitutes for both.

Was there anyone you avoided in game/were afraid of?
No.

What rules were imposed in this game? (i.e. no griefing, no swearing) Did you stick to these rules? What were the consequences?
Typical MMO rules, no swearing etc. etc. I don't think I've ever really cared about these rules, and I've never had to deal with game masters or moderators either.

Were there words or phrases that you used in the game that you wouldn't use with a real conversation partner?
Yeah. "nobbb".

What class of character did you choose? What features of this character appealed to you?
I like simple characters, like fighters and barbarians. I don't have the patience to deal with spells and such, but I like necromancers and being able to spawn NPC's that can aid me.

Do you characters have different personalities?
No.

So would you talk in real life as you do in the game?
Yes.

Did you know anyone from both the game world and the real world? How do you think they were different?
I don't, and I don't really know.

Did you ever roleplay in these games?
No.

What do you think of roleplayers?
They're gay.

Let me take a crack at this...
-----------------
In your games, did you ever join a guild, or faction? Why?
Yes, I have joined a few guilds in my day. I joined these to do one of a few things...
• Steal from the Guild Bank (WoW)
• Find others for groups for places that you can't solo to level (Anywhere in FFXI)
• Insult kids when they say stupid things (WoW is too easy for this)
Did you ever do anything like a dungeon party (raid)? Or another type of group activity? Who did you do this with?
If you mean raid, then yes I have but only a few times. In WoW for example, I only ran ZG once in Pre-BC to see what
raids were like, but then later I returned to finish the accomplishment. Instances? I've done plenty of. Games like Guild
Wars and Final Fantasy XI you HAVE TO GROUP to get ANYWHERE in the game.
Were there any types of players you disliked? Why?
Kids and elitists are all I can recall as they always behave as follows...
• Speak stupid shit because they feel that they've got something to prove.
• When attempting to prove said thing, they will attempt to lure you into dueling them, as that's the only way they know
how to do anything.
• When called out on their inability to back up their statements, they go on for 1+ hours on how they "have a life and you
don't" and "I'm teh best in teh game d00d n U SUCK! LULZ!"
How did you treat players that you disliked?
"/laugh + /spit", it's also good for trolling the socially rejected trash spoken of in my last answer.
What do you consider to be 'noobish' behaviour? How do you feel about this?
I know most would claim that "wiping" a group is noobish, but honestly, it's all in how you behave with the everyday things.
I mean, if you wipe the group and then go off on "U ALL SUCK, I'M TOO GOOD FOR U LIEFLESS NERDS!! /disband", I'd consider
that pretty noobish, but it's mainly when you crack some wise-ass joke that genuinely isn't funny but then get pissy when
people have to bring that up or something of the sort. It all comes back to kids really, as their immaturity makes them noobs
no matter how they play the game. How I feel about this? I've stopped caring enough about this behavior to slap them on the
back of the hand about it, but I can't hold myself back from jumping on the insult bandwagon if it calls for it.
Was there anyone you avoided in game/were afraid of?
I fear none of these gamers, as a matter of fact, I lure them in to lulz them out.
What rules were imposed in this game? (i.e. no griefing, no swearing) Did you stick to these rules? What were the consequences?
Rules were simply...
• Get along with others.
• Don't rip through GMs.
• Don't cheat, even though this is impossible with the games I've played aside from Diablo II (maphack?).
Were there words or phrases that you used in the game that you wouldn't use with a real conversation partner?
"Lol", "Pwned", and "Nub" (maybe) are all I can think of now.
What class of character did you choose? What features of this character appealed to you?
Warrior, or mainly any melee class. FFXI, I was working on Warrior, Dragoon, and Samurai. On WoW, I was a Rogue. Guild Wars on the
other hand, I was a Necromancer with Warrior subclassed until I switched to Elementalist. Features? Swords... One handed/two handed/dual wield,
all that matters are swords.
Do you characters have different personalities?
I tried working on characters with an "in character" theme personality, but I end up giving up on that as there is NO WAY to be acceptable when you
speak in all Olde English.
So would you talk in real life as you do in the game?
I'm one of the few that actually speak as I would offline, and I have no respect for people who use complete comp-speak as if they can't articulate proper communication.
Did you know anyone from both the game world and the real world? How do you think they were different?
Two of my friends I know both online and offline, and they seem to act the same as they usually would.
Did you ever roleplay in these games?
Roleplay? F-f-f-f-f-FUCK NO! "I was raised in the morning sun on the silver fields of Ranophris, and raised as a blacksmith to aid in the military. As I hammered upon the steel, I desired to become a grand paladin of the.." *FAIL!* Those who create a backstory for themselves in the desires to cease playing the game and write a book should get the hell out of my domain. Cybering on the other hand... These people should have their reproductive organs torn asunder and used as doorstops, as they obviously aren't using them (or have any desire to use them) as they were intended.
What do you think of roleplayers?
Reference back to the last answer.

In your games, did you ever join a guild, or faction? Why?
Yup, to gain some friends online and mostly, seeking other players from my country.

Did you ever do anything like a dungeon party (raid)? Or another type of group activity? Who did you do this with?
I've done this a lot, that's when I was playing ASDA Story (once!), and Fiesta Online (I think 8 times in Kingdom Quests). If they need something, I'm almost always available anyways.

Were there any types of players you disliked? Why?
Gold-farm spammers, they lag my system big time! Of course, I also hate beggars, seriously!

How did you treat players that you disliked?
Just ignore them!

What do you consider to be 'noobish' behaviour? How do you feel about this?
Begging for gold and equips, though I once been on that crap. How do I feel about them? Pathetic

Was there anyone you avoided in game/were afraid of?
Beggars, and racists... especially Singaporeans (in WolfTeam) "cibai lah" (it means something vulgar)

What rules were imposed in this game? (i.e. no griefing, no swearing) Did you stick to these rules? What were the consequences?
No swearing, then of course no kill-stealing, and no mob-trailing. Yup, and of course you'll get chat-muted and/or 1-week suspension.

Were there words or phrases that you used in the game that you wouldn't use with a real conversation partner?
Grind, ROFLMAO, gg, pwn'ed

What class of character did you choose? What features of this character appealed to you?
In Emil Chronicle Online, I chose Fencer due to their noble appeal, and I'm a sucker for character classes which use rapiers :3
Usually, I pick Fighter classes actually. :fogetbackflip:

Do your characters have different personalities?
Yup.

So would you talk in real life as you do in the game?
Rarely.

Did you know anyone from both the game world and the real world? How do you think they were different?
Yup, and I only knew them in real-life when I disclosed my in-game name from an underrated MMO game.

Did you ever roleplay in these games?
Well, yup. In Fiesta Online, Emil Chronicle Online, and in GhostX. :welp:

What do you think of roleplayers?
They have IMAGINATION! *spongebob's imagination*. They're the ones spilling fanfics everywhere :P

In your games, did you ever join a guild, or faction? Why?
I generally box when I play games, meaning I use more than one computer to play more than one avatar at a time. That said, I tend to avoid guilds unless my friends really want me to, and even then I tend to not enjoy them as much due to the weirdness of some players.

Did you ever do anything like a dungeon party? Or another type of group activity? Who did you do this with?
Generally when I'm in any MMO I don't like dealing with others in this, the last time I tried one none of the people with me attacked anything and was generally scared of the monsters within. But, normally I suppose with close friends I don't mind since we know each others play style.

Were there any types of players you disliked? Why?

Not really, there are people I've seen that are simply inhuman towards others regarding what determines how much I could dislike a player, but I tend to play by myself since I could make my own party using multiple computers.

How did you treat players that you disliked?
Simply ignore them, I've learned that during my times in playing any game ignoring those who seek to be disliked makes them extremely furious. The idea that, that which they seek cannot be obtained simply drives them crazy. Besides...look at my age, I simply have no time to dislike people over a video game.

What do you consider to be 'noobish' behaviour? How do you feel about this?

Arrogance, nothing more than one who believes they know all but simply know nothing.

Was there anyone you avoided in game/were afraid of?

I avoid most of all players, but I'm friendly and help anytime if need be. I'm afraid of no one, but I dislike those who hurt other intentionally. I avoid trolls.

What rules were imposed in this game? (i.e. no griefing, no swearing) Did you stick to these rules? What were the consequences?

Whenever there is a game I play, normally players set their rules and others subconsiously follow. Example, there was a rule in a mini game the administrations made, and players made the rule "if you're the last to enter, you must leave if 10 players are inside already". The GMs did not set this rule but players follow this. Consequences for breaking rules leads to a bad rep and normally a ban ultimately.

Were there words or phrases that you used in the game that you wouldn't use with a real conversation partner?

"Using the transmutation normally involves taking a rune of a lower tier and combining it with the same type to blah blah blah", I never use game knowledge in my daily conversations unless it's my little brother or gaming friend who would you know, understand this.

What class of character did you choose? What features of this character appealed to you?

I tend to be built on destruction, but I also tend to heal the wounds of others. Depending on the situation I normally go for the over-powered glass cannons, or the most versatile healers. Sometimes on the blue moon I'll play the stealthy type.

Do your characters have different personalities?

No, but for kicks when I dual box sometimes i'll pretend the other avatar is someone else. But generally I am myself as any person.

So would you talk in real life as you do in the game?

No, two separate entities and as well as it would be somewhat award if I did.

Did you know anyone from both the game world and the real world? How do you think they were different?

My friend since childhood Adrian, it's always a blast to play online with each other and then do inside jokes only we understand. There isn't much of a difference but in gameplay I'm mostly the protector since I am much more experienced.

Did you ever roleplay in these games?
No, most of the time it always leads to the opposite side trying to make advancements.

What do you think of roleplayers?
It's all good.

In your games, did you ever join a guild, or faction? Why?
When I used to tittle away my time playing Runescape, yes. I learned a lesson from that, though: clans/guilds are like having a second job I don't like alternative obligations.

Did you ever do anything like a dungeon party (raid)? Or another type of group activity? Who did you do this with?
In NWN, yes. With my IRL friends via LAN.

Were there any types of players you disliked? Why?
Players who are overconfident. 13 year olds(they are just generally terrible people in online games for some reason).

How did you treat players that you disliked?
Ignored them (as in ingame ignore mechanic)

What do you consider to be 'noobish' behaviour? How do you feel about this?
 Overconfidence, calling others noobs.

Was there anyone you avoided in game/were afraid of?
 No.

What rules were imposed in this game? (i.e. no griefing, no swearing) Did you stick to these rules? What were the consequences?
No rules when I play on LAN and on Runescape the rules were so trivial I disregarded them.

Were there words or phrases that you used in the game that you wouldn't use with a real conversation partner?
I've let a few IRL's and LOL's slip into everyday confident by accident. I only use certain chat speak (acronyms relevant to topic of conversation) when speaking about a game to a fellow gamer.

What class of character did you choose? What features of this character appealed to you?
I enjoy support characters because I like to challenge myself. I never saw the appeal in equipping the strongest weapon you can and killing everything in one hit.

Do your characters have different personalities?
I have MPD and all my individual personalities have characters with MPD who have characters with MPD, very confusing.

So would you talk in real life as you do in the game?
 See above.

Did you know anyone from both the game world and the real world? How do you think they were different?
 Less trust.

Did you ever roleplay in these games?
I never really got into roleplay. That and many people just plain blow at it and will say things like *blocks spell and kills you in one hit*.

What do you think of roleplayers?
Depends on the person, some are good at it.

Uh oh, this is due tomorrow! I added a few questions for anyone still interested.
Title: Our digital identities in online games
Post by: OishaSan on September 24, 2009, 12:25:24 pm
*Do you feel a sense of community in your game?

Depends on the game I guess. In WoW there are two different sides so while you're not automatically going to be friendly with your own side, you're probably going to go into spaz kill mode when ya see an enemy player. The players are all pretty nice, of course there are asshole, but on the whole there's community spirit, and some genuinely nice players out there willing to help. Like real life I guess.

*How do you talk in, or about this game? (Are there message boards, chat, etc.)

There's world chat in most games, where ya can talk about the game (or anything), but most big topics, like new quests, mysteries, guides and stuff you'll fin don forums, both official and unofficial. Sometimes guilds have their own forums too.

*In your games, did you ever join a guild, or faction? Why? If so, did you also interact with people regularly that were not in this guild?

Yeah, I usually join guilds. I'm not about to go out of my way to join a guild, but would rather be in one than not. It's nice to have people to talk to, play with, fight with etc. Sometimes ya get free stuff out of it too.

*Do you share any in-jokes with people in your guild/game?

Yeah there's always in jokes. Most of them are pretty lame, but some of them literally make me lol. Most of the in jokes in the games I played were game-wide, or at least server-wide.

*What was your goal in this game? Is this goal similar to others who played this game?

To get to the point where I can kill anyone that pisses me off really.

Did you ever do anything like a dungeon party (raid)? Or another type of group activity? Who did you do this with?

Yeah. Did a few instances anyway in WoW, used to DP a loooot in Rappelz, cuz there's no better way to level up. Grinding by yourself is a really slow and shitty way to level. Castle wars on Runescape was fun. Ya just get thrown onto a team, and ya gotta defend a castle while trying to take another. Capture the flag really.

Were there any types of players you disliked? Why?

Noobs that refuse to learn and people who are just assholes. Especially if they're strong.

*How did you treat players that you disliked? How did you treat them or talk to them?

Usually call them names. On WoW I'd just cloak and stun them. Rinse, repeat. On a lot of games though PKing gets rewarded with negative effects

What do you consider to be 'noobish' behaviour? How do you feel about this?

Noobish? uhhhh not being able to work out the simplest of things. Walking around in completely mismatched armor. Making stupid mistakes. Annoying, but funny at times.

*How do you know a player is an expert?

The big names are usually well known. In rappelz there are famous people. They're always really high level. Tamers especially are famous cuz they're sought after so often for their services.

Was there anyone you avoided in game/were afraid of?

Red names in rappelz. If they got a red name they're probably strong, or stupid. dont really take my chances. My main is a healer though, so I can usually get by these guys no prob

What rules were imposed in this game? (i.e. no griefing, no swearing) Did you stick to these rules? What were the consequences?

Spamming is a no no usually, especially advertising. Greifing is punished. Swearing is filtered, but there are ways around that. In some games you'll be silenced forever for swearing too much.

*Were there words or phrases that you used in the game that you wouldn't use with a real conversation partner? (Is there any jargon specific to your game of choice?)

I hate it when people use lol in a real conversation. All sorts of game words sound stupid when theyre not written down

What class of character did you choose? What features of this character appealed to you?

I usually like healers, and cheap characters (*ahem* rogue). I guess I'm just a coward, but live to fight another day right?

*Do you treat the game world as a real place in your mind? (This question is a little bit abstract, answer how you will)

Well I know the game world better than I know my own town, so maybe.

Do your characters have different personalities?

Nah, not into roleplaying really. Course if i'm using a strong char i'll probably be more lippy.

So would you talk in real life as you do in the game?

I wudn't say so. My game language is usually pretty much broken english. cuz i'm too lazy to type properly most of the time, at 4am

Did you know anyone from both the game world and the real world? How do you think they were different?

Yeah. I've grown to know them through both internet and real life, so its hard to seperate their two different identities... uhh... I guess a lot more swearing on the net, cuz hey, who gives a shit right? whats the worst that cud happen

Did you ever roleplay in these games?

Pass.

What do you think of roleplayers?

Hey man, if pretending youre a furry turns you on do it. just dont be shocked when i crack my ass up laughing at you.

*How do you talk in, or about this game? (Are there message boards, chat, etc.)
chat

*Do you share any in-jokes with people in your guild/game?
no

*What was your goal in this game? Is this goal similar to others who played this game?
apathetic, I don't know

*How do you know a player is an expert?
when he he or she can use the crossbow really well

*Do you treat the game world as a real place in your mind? (This question is a little bit abstract, answer how you will)
absolutely.
Title: Our digital identities in online games
Post by: chanicakes on September 25, 2009, 05:28:05 pm
*Do you feel a sense of community in your game?

Yes I kinda do, but kinda don't. I feel affiliated with the people I talk to each day but to an extent.

*How do you talk in, or about this game? (Are there message boards, chat, etc.)

I chat the way I normally would in lets say messenger or to other people. I constantly joke even if it's terrible and not that funny but dry and old. But I don't find that I talk differently because of it, on the rare occasion I used a game word instead of a real word but that was once or twice ever.

*In your games, did you ever join a guild, or faction? Why? If so, did you also interact with people regularly that were not in this guild?

Yes, have often, don't much like them because there is the expectation to be active each day and that is something I just cannot and will not do.

*Do you share any in-jokes with people in your guild/game?

Of course I do, I have tons of inside jokes with these people.

*What was your goal in this game? Is this goal similar to others who played this game?

Not really a goal, it is a time waster I have done for years... just became a habit and ritual more than a goal.

Did you ever do anything like a dungeon party (raid)? Or another type of group activity? Who did you do this with?

No I don't, I prefer to work alone

Were there any types of players you disliked? Why?

Players that just get in the way of anyones game to be rude or annoying, I prefer to wipe the ground with their face but don't out of respect of the game and other users.

*How did you treat players that you disliked? How did you treat them or talk to them?

Never talked to them, shown them any attention.

What do you consider to be 'noobish' behaviour? How do you feel about this?

Not knowing what to do and breaking inset rules without ever looking at what the rules are, there after saying "I didn't know that was against the rules"... pfffbt

*How do you know a player is an expert?

Not really, no person can technically be the expert of a game if they didn't make it... that is just my opinion, I do however know many amazingly good players.

Was there anyone you avoided in game/were afraid of?

Never afraid, just had a big beef with them and wouldn't feed the beef.

What rules were imposed in this game? (i.e. no griefing, no swearing) Did you stick to these rules? What were the consequences?

Lots of rules, too many to list... will just say they dumbed it down to infant style.

*Were there words or phrases that you used in the game that you wouldn't use with a real conversation partner? (Is there any jargon specific to your game of choice?)

Acronyms of certain items and stuff, thats pretty much the only difference jargon.

What class of character did you choose? What features of this character appealed to you?

I love being a warrior or sorceress (Druid) depending on games, I play many.

*Do you treat the game world as a real place in your mind? (This question is a little bit abstract, answer how you will)

No I don't, it ain't real, doesn't bother me if it were gone... would just be sad to never talk to the people I talked to there, that's the funnest part IMO.

Do your characters have different personalities?

Not really, I can't say they do.

So would you talk in real life as you do in the game?

Yes I normally do, cause I talk pretty normal.

Did you know anyone from both the game world and the real world? How do you think they were different?

Yeah, my siblings and a few friends. Nothing was different about them.

Did you ever roleplay in these games?

Nope. Never will either.

What do you think of roleplayers?

It's a good time passer, they like it, it seems like it's a fun thing to do.
