Sorry if the title doesn't make much sense. Couldn't figure out anything better.
Anyway, so I came home from school today, ate some lunch and then rested on the sofa flipping through music channels when suddenly I came across a channel called Starz TV (this is Sky Digital by the way). Normally I would skip to the next channels seeing as I don't really like the music that Starz TV airs. The reason I stopped though was this:
Hear anything familiar? If you've ever played Chrono Cross you should. The video I posted featured a sample of the Chrono Cross track "On the Beach of Dreams ~Another World~". Here's the original in case you've never heard it:
Now I'm left wondering if there are any other cases of video game music crossing over to mainstream (although the example I provided wouldn't exactly be called mainstream) music? I know of the FFVII rap, but is there anything else? I find it pretty interesting and would be surprised to see something other than rap and hip-hop sampling it. By the way, no mash ups unless they're really good. Here's the FFVII rap to those who want to watch it:
-
The closest thing I've ever heard to that were those awful "sonic rap"s like this

-
Only things I can think of is that in the 90s there were a few mainstream songs about Tamagotchis, which don't exactly count as video games (though idk they are kind of MINIATURE video games but w/e)

Uh, Duane and BrandO are great?
Go check out their channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/theadventuresofdnb), there's much better stuff than their Sonic rap.

Duane and Brando are awesome, their Final Fantasy one is easily their best, IMO... or maybe Mega Man.

What a bunch of useless cunts. They don't even point out the references. They just post names and links to horrible songs that I am not willing to sit through just to see what games where sampled.
Nothing good could ever come of this so I doubt vgm nods or sampling will ever become mainstream.

As far as I know, yeah. As did his song about IRC.
Do you really think this qualifies as making Video Game or IRC music mainstream?
-
well why does mainstream exclude europe? because i'm pretty sure CHART TOPPING SINGLE is kind of the definition of mainstream
-
Who said anything about excluding Europe? It's the fact you have one example.
And a sole example does not make something mainstream.
-
I'd say Basshunter's more a novelty than the mainstream
It's worth pointing out that the foetal waste known as Mr. Blobby (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h37KQu64RY4) got to number one :welp: chart hit ain't always being the mainstream, like... the Chicken Song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vUVJsfG3eA&feature=related)
Cool Britania forever :fogetcool:
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjG4mK2bIcU this could make a fantastic rap song
-
some guy I was friends with back in primary school who was a fat jerkass became some kinda gangstashit type of guy growing up and he started making terrible french rap, sometimes semi-french semi-english rap
but his latest hit, called I WANNA GO AWAY
is set to a piano render of the metal gear solid theme
i don't know if he did it on purpose or he just thought it sounded cool
but really iirc he has an online album up and you can actually buy tracks, even though most of the melodies and backing tracks and parts of his songs are stolen from other copyrighted songs
amazing

xenon 2: megablast (bomb the bass 'megablast')

Pirates of The Caribbean Theme
Sounds a LOT like
To me.
Also Not so much Mainstream, but it made it to A LOAD of clubs around here and many other places,
-
ær yes, that was my thought when I first listened to that song, but my guess is that they are just similar because they are EPIC PIRATE MUSIC MUST HAVE ORCHESTRAS IN ME SHIP
-
They may be main stream, but damn it, they should be:
The Protomen (http://protomen.com/act1/protomen.htm)
Their music is actually an epic rock opera based (loosely) on the story of Mega man instead of the music, so there's only a few song that actually sound inspired from the game's music... this is probably a good thing. Act II just came out, telling the story of Dr. Light's past and its really fucking good.
