Title: Games that have beaten you
Post by: Massy2k6 on November 15, 2009, 08:10:27 pm
This came up in conversation and I wanted to hear about what games have beaten you guys. This got me thinking back to the Sega Megadrive and I remembered two games from this console which beat me everytime.

The first was some spiderman game, I forget the name but I would always get my ass handed to me each time I reached the electro guy which wasn't very often. The second was a game I'm still unsure as to why I actually played called Alex the Kid, this would pawn me everytime and I was stupid enough to keep trying.

Now that I think about it, I remember getting beaten by Gran turismo 3 on the PS2. I must have gotten at least 90%, but those endurance races killed me sitting there for an hour plus going around in circles. Me and a friend had to take turns with each endurance race because they were impossible to complete by yourself, I think we gave up after the 3rd or 4th.
So these are just a few games that have beat me over the years, theres a ton more but the more recent ones are due to me getting bored with them rather than them being too difficult.. I don't have the patience I use to have with video games anymore.

Any want to share?

Conkers Bad Fur Day. I couldn't do the bit where you had to escape the beach area near the end of the game. I kept getting hid with the rockets over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and, well you get the idea.

The only game that I have ever actually given up on was Shadow of the Beast 2 for the Mega Drive. It's a hard-as-balls totally unforgiving platformer that was barely beatable in the original Amiga version - and the Genesis version had pretty much all the useful dialogue removed, making it even harder.

Argh. I even managed to beat The Immortal in the end, but fuck Shadow of the Beast 2.

I appreciated the realism but making kids play the same track for hours with endurance races was taking the piss.

I barely complete video games these days! I usually play one and get bored then play another one and then repeat.

Yes, but aren't you supposed to beat a game first then proceed to buy another? That's what I'm told your supposed to do.

Fire and Ice starring Cool Coyote on my atari when i was a fuckan baby. It was a really really awesome platformer but me and my brother just couldn't do it.

I found out only a couple of weeks back that we were using joysticks that were nothing like what you were supposed to play the game with, we couldn't shoot snowballs half as fast as we were meant to be able to. Game's probably easy as fuck with the right hardware for al lI know

Oh yes man, I remember some of the challenges and stuff in that. I don't really remember which ones were the hardest, but as a kid I remember getting stuck on many of the later coin collecting ones. You had to collect these coins from places way off the track, and then come back and STILL place first

If it was the first one for the genesis, a turbo-fire controller really helped against him. When you played on nightmare, Venom seemed to be around every corner. The part at the end where you had to keep alive while fighting Venom and Kingpin was real annoying the first time.

Out of this World

I have never loved a game and hated it so much at the same time as I did with this game. Towards the end I would do a victory dance every time I got a new password.

Also Silent Hill 2 on Hard Mode is fucking unreal.  Especially when you have to run away from the Pyramid Head without getting Maria killed and she fucking walks away from him. Also, on the final boss after you've wasted 3/4 of your ammo and healing items in the Pyramid Heads. I am never going to play Silent Hill games on Hard Mode ever again.

It was ridiculous. I could never beat some of the later levels, and I doubt I could if I tried now either. The thing is, I'd always come in 2nd or 3rd in those coin races. It's like they specifically designed the level so that the difficulty fringes just on the line between possible and impossible and every race became a rage-inducing experience.

Battletoads. Holy shit, that game pissed me off so much.

I'm easily frustrated, and since I play games to relax, I'm likely to turn them off if they frustrate me. . . so yeah, quite a few games have 'beaten' me.

It was especially insane if you'd already figured out how to jump into first airport early and had taken several joyrides. Even if you had your pilot stat mastered, I believe you still had to go through the flight tests! There was also a side mission with the David Cross voiced character where you had to fly a remote control plane that was a regular "I want to slam my head in a door" experience.

There was something similar involving a flying creature in one of the Harry Potter games. I had to help a friend's fiancee get through that one. That reminds me of one that I actually couldn't beat, at least in the time I had with it. Same friend's fiancee was trying to get anyone who came over to the house to help her get past a "Save Giles" level in one of the Buffy the Vampire slayer games. We all tried it a few times before giving up.

Tetris and Pacman Actually most game beat me in HARD difficulty settings :

-Devil May Cry (1) in Dante must die mode
-Godhand - Any mode except easy can beat me easily (because it gets harder if you are GOOD at the game). Managed to finish very few stages in hard.
-Most recent : Chaos legion on hard.

Nostalgia (Played these years ago)
-Altered Beast (can't beat that one stage where you become a bear or something)
-Actraiser 1/2(Take revenge via save state few months ago)
-7th Saga
-A Batman game featuring joker as the 1st boss
-Bionic commando (I was young and I have no clue how to play this)
-Any 2D castlevania series pre SOTN
-Megaman 1 - stuck at final boss
etc2

Also, I share GTA Problems as well (I can't get through some mission in Vice City).

mickey mania (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mickey_Mania:_The_Timeless_Adventures_of_Mickey_Mouse) on genesis.

i had this game for so many years. It was a challenge throughout my adolescence, and as I got older I was able to get slightly farther. At some point (that last time I played it, probably 13-16) I actually made it to the last level, though I didn't really know it was the last level at the time, but I could never manage to beat it. I'm pretty sure I made it to the very last boss that one time.

I'd like to get it now and try to beat it.

The last "Preview Lap" in Burnout 3. You have to be CONSTANTLY BOOSTING, and this was SDTV so I couldn't see the traffic ahead very clearly, that plus the boost blur effect made it so you could only get gold if you were exceptionally lucky or you memorized the entirety of the course (the traffic is the same every time, yes I played the track enough times to notice this).

Normally, games don't beat me, but one that I refuse to play again because it pissed me off to the point that not even turning off the game stopped me from raging over it was Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games for the Wii. So help me, the controls were ridiculous. I mean, who swims with their arms flailing out in front of them and snapping their fingers? And then the whole "shoot the clay disks with your back turned toward the ideal direction." part of the game.

Aside from that, games don't beat me... Hell, I've started going back through the older games and trying my luck at speedruns for a bit of a challenge. Such as...

I can't beat Mario and Luigi superstar saga because I just don't have the patience for it. My brother had to beat the princess peach in the desert part for me, because it was driving me mad.

I also remember giving up on Minish Cap around the bird area in the sky. I can't remember it for crap except that I pretty much never touched it again.

Also, I never beat Halo 3 in mythic (basically slaso skulls or whatever).  Requires hours of work, and even with a team is just so fucking painful.

Ninja Gaiden (nes): the final stage is impossible. It's a kick in the balls that when you lose, you go back at the beginning.
Zombies Ate my Neighbors: the last levels are unreal.
Ghost n' Goblins: I could never beat the "second quest", when I reached that place I was out of continues.
Silver Surfer: hardest game ever. :(

Out of this World is easy! It's just trial and error. Flashback is hardcore.

I got up to 8 before I started dying a bunch. I think the sequence for that one might get off rhythm when you die because without zig zagging back and forth, I couldn't even get one of the yellow balls after my first run where I was able to nab them all but made a stupid mistake getting back the other green block. Its pretty fun though, I'll give it another try later.

Chakan the Forever Man, that game is fucking murder.

You beat those levels? Here, have some more. By the way, these are even harder. Hope you like instant death. Wait...no, seriously. You beat those levels too? You need to get a new hobby. Here have an ending, and have some credits while you're at it.

But wait, yeah, you thought you were done? No. Here have another boss. And one try. You sir, are welcome for your game over.

Repeat until insane, or until you defeat the thing - whichever comes first.

I managed to completely beat it once on the Genesis, but if I ever get the self destructive impulse to play through it again, I'd use an emulator and abuse the hell out of save states.

The game's difficulty did do a good job of conveying the hopelessness implied in the "normal" ending though.

I gave up on Mirror's Edge after repeating some level a couple dozen times. I really wanted to like the game, but when they decided to make the game about combat instead of about running around like a badass ninja, I could not continue. The combat was just too terrible.

I also never got past the first boss in Devil May Cry. He had some kind of attack that would never miss or something. It was the closest I ever got to breaking a controller.

For some reason I could never beat Star Ocean III I think its because of how boring the cut scenes are(well most of them).
I could also never beat Devil May Cry 2 I guess that game is quite boring as well.

Devil May Cry 2 was the easiest of the bunch. (Excluding 4) and you could skip SO3's scenes.

It had nothing to do with the difficulty for Devil may Cry II It was just by far the worst in the series for me I always got bored of it before i finished it.
With Star Ocean III on the other hand I never skip a cut scene in any game especially in an rpg even if the cut scene involves 2 girls just hugging each other for no reason I wont skip it.

ahh, i remember Out of This World was ridiculously hard at points. i loved that game. hmm generally i'm pretty determined with beating games and i will try for hours to beat the tough parts... for example, in Chibi Robo (haha) there was one strangely difficult minigame where you have to have perfect timing to stop a car before it falls off an edge. it took me forever to beat that x3 Rare games like Banjo-Kazooie, Battletoads, and Conker's Bad Fur Day (i think that was Rare, right?) also had some frustrating parts, but i always managed to get through it :D

Wizards and Warriors II: Ironsword on the NES.

Really hard! Oh my god I had patience back then.

The fun begins at 4:20.   :fogetcool:

As awesome as this game was, you could only enjoy it for maybe 30 minutes before it became absolutely fucking impossible.  I also never understood the gigantic jellyfish + angry clam + pumpkins combo.

I never beat it, and I'm pretty sure it later found its way into my nightmares as an adult.

i am surprised to hear you guys having trouble with diddy kong racing cause I beat the 64 version in about a day, got it on a rom a few years later and beat that in a few hours, and then the DS version in less. I really enjoyed the game and thought it had a medium-light amount of difficulty!

as for the game that frustrates me most: F-Zero GX.
It took me like a day to beat the first event race with Goroh, I think I beat the second one, but last I checked I was on the casino level and I have been for like a few years... fucking thing...

Journey to Silius (NES) -> I can't seem to finish the final stage where it's like you're trying to make your way out from a failing ship...

Tales of Destiny (PS1) -> I'm stuck in a factory-like thingy in the Aeropolis where you have to take down what they call the Belcrant.

While I have quit a lot of games out of frustration due to overthetop difficulty, or boredom, there remains one that really beat me. Maybe I should have looked on GameFAQs about it, but it seemed like that would defeat the purpose of the game:

Way of the Samurai 2. What the shit am I supposed to do in this game? I died so many times trying different things, that I really can't imagine what I was intended to accomplish. There's a 3rd one coming out/out already I dunno, but I'm morbidly interested to see if it's any more clear or sandbox-like.

I couldn't beat a level in Halo 2 where you're fighting a ton of these gorilla alien dudes, if only because my friend insisted on playing on hard difficulty. I am not very good at FPS! If any games really and truly beat me at skill, it's FPS games.

Starwars for the Snes...
Couldn't get off Tatooine, there was this large starship in the hanger that kicked my ass... hard
Damn you storm troopers !!!!!

all three super star wars on the snes were awesome! empire strikes back was my favourite.

halo 2's legendary mode was almost as bad as halo 1's . to this day I think some of halo's levels were harder on legendary than halo 2's. It took me countless hours beating them, then I played coop and it became half as easy which was sweet. Halo 3 on the other hand, man they really fucked that game up. It wasn't as challenging, they made it easier to go through on legendary which surprised me  a little.

Oh I forgot... Xenosaga Ep.1... I kind of rushed through the game, not leveling much and not upgrading my Eggs or whatever, and then there was this cerberus boss battle or something inside Kos-Mos's mind? Or was it Shions mind? Whoever... I was unready for that boss battle in every possible way, and had no way to get ready. That game beat me.

When I was a kid, there were some games which i'd get stuck on and never be able to pass in order to beat the game. Though, this probably is due to the fact that I was young and not as able as I am today. Some of you mentioned the missions in GTA: San Andreas but I can't attest to this due because I don't think I got far enough to do so. I remember the mission in GTA: Vice City where you had to race Hilary the Lawyer starting and ending outside of the Malibu Club, that mission took me many tries and bouts of frustration before I completed it. The later missions of GTA III were also frustrating, the ones involving Catalina, the Yakuza, etc. The one that I got stuck on involved crashing into and destroying the expresso stands...I tried and tried but with no luck.

Oh and I became stuck at Braska's Final Aeon at the end of FFX, but this could be due to me being underleveled (I am almost always underleveled when I play RPGs, hardly taking out time to grind and level up although im starting to break this habit due to not wanting to be STUCK at any point in time.)  Aside from these, I cant recall any games which made me throw in the towel because I was absolutely stuck at a point. I don't always complete the games I start, but this is mostly because I have no motivation to due so and not because I have actually been beaten by the game.

I couldn't beat a level in Halo 2 where you're fighting a ton of these gorilla alien dudes, if only because my friend insisted on playing on hard difficulty. I am not very good at FPS! If any games really and truly beat me at skill, it's FPS games.
The brutes? And yeah Halo and Halo 2 are brutal on their legendary modes. It took me a while of learning the map layouts and planning a strategy with what little ammo there was to work with in order to finally beat the legendary modes. Though Halo 3's campaign, as Brown pointed out, is vastly(okay not really) easier than the previous two installations. I'd say that Halo 3's legendary is equivalent in difficulty to your average H2 level on Heroic. Oh and I always had more trouble with H2's legendary mode than Halo's, probably because the amount of aim assistance also applied to the covenant forces as well as character that the player used.

Thats weird, I thought Halo 1 had easier legendary then Halo 2... mainly because of lack of ammo in the first level in halo 2 made it impossible for me to get past all the god damned elites.

Blaster Master for NES. It's either I get killed by Area 7's lobster boss, or the NES just randomly resets itself... I rage quit this game all the time <_< Still love it for some reason though. Childhood thing I guess.

You can beat almost every boss in Blaster Master by shooting them once, and pausing the game as soon as the bullet hits. You'll know it's working if the sound of a bullet hitting is constantly looping.

Oh man, I remember abusing this trick in Megaman 1 for the NES. I think this only worked for the lightning bolt that you get from electric man, but im not positive.

Just up and up beating DKR wasn't the troublesome part, though I seem to recall having some difficulty later on. It was the coin challenges that gave us such trouble. And if i rememebr correctly, and I might not, but you got balloons from the coin challenges that you would need later to open doors to more levels. Like, you got one balloon for just winning the race, but another for going back and getting all the coins AND winning the race. And there's be like 10 courses but the door to the next area required like 18 balloons so you HAD to finish 8 of those coin challenges.

that's what gave ME trouble anyway.
