Title: Restaurants
Post by: Sludgelord on December 10, 2009, 02:58:53 pm
So I really like going out to eat. I'm pretty adventurous and I like to try new and exotic things pretty often and I guess I'm fortunate in that I live in an area with a huge selection of restaurants. Actually, I'd be surprised if there are any places in the US outside of New York that have a wider variety than DC. I think my favorite restaurant is Bangkok Garden, which is this Thai restaurant in that I've been going to for as long as I can remember. It has a really cool atmosphere, all these Buddhist statues and Thai decorations in front of a picture of the king of Thailand that looks like it was taken in the 70s. The coolest part is this indoor stream with a little bridge going over it. The food is fantastic and every time I go there I always get the thad munn appetizer, which is this fish cake with peanut sauce. Just about everything on the menu is excellent, but I always enjoy the fried rice. It's also pretty cool going there because the management knows me and I always get free stuff.

A couple of my other favorite restaurants are China Bistro, which is this hole-in-the-wall Chinese place with 4 cramped tables that serves the best dumplings I've ever had, Sadaf Halal, an excellent Persian kabob restaurant with an adjacent market, Negril, a Jamaican place near one of my school campuses that serves really huge roti, and Legano, which is this Ethiopian place near me. I think one of the best indicators that an ethnic restaurant is really good is when it's filled with ethnic people, which is always the case with the places I go to.

So yeah, what are your favorite restaurants and favorite kinds of food? What dishes do you like the best and what kinds of food would you suggest to someone with an adventurous taste like me?

Also now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure I took ramci to every single one of these places.

Ethnic restaurants are good for me because they offer a lot of options I can eat (usually).  I really like Thai food and I'm happy that there is one Thai restaurant in my small town.  There was a point last year where my mom and I would go there like once a week haha.  I also love Indian food...yum.  I basically love lots of food from all over.  I live and around towns that are mainly pizza places and steakhouses and the usual American stuff so if I want more ethnic foods I have to venture out a bit.

I absolutely love country cooking places.  Jesus I cannot even explain how good they are, and there are plenty of good ones in Kentucky/Tennessee.  The best though is Jean's in Mount Vernon, KY.  If anyone ever has to drive I-75 through Kentucky for any reason, stop at Jean's (it's right off the interstate).  Best fuckin' fried chicken I've ever had in my life.  The breading is crunchy and it's kind of this orange color, which at first seemed really weird to me but then after I ate it I did not mind the weird color.  Aaaaa I cannot describe how good this restaurant is, you get a huge plate of chicken and fries and whatever other sides.  Basically this is my favorite type of food, just simple home cooking type restaurants.  I've been to a lot because there are so many near where I live, but yeah Jean's is the best.  There's another one in Tennessee that has similar chicken but not quite as fantastic, but I forget the name of it.

Fuuuuuuck I'm hungry now.

I like eating food too but I don't have money or a good mode of transportation right now. I'd really like to eat at this moroccan place that serves chicken bastilla. I've been to a good burmese place that has a lot of Mon dishes with coconut in em. I've also been to some good cheesesteak shops (pats and genos are awful places no one should ever go), jewish delis and brewpubs but who wants to hear about those.

in germany I had some nice jaegerschnitzel at a weihenstephaner branch in berlin. the weihenstephaner in bavaria is supposed to be the oldest brewery in the world, but this was a new branch slightly out of reach of the tourism center but still pretty fake. I barely ate anywhere else good in europe because my friends prefered to walk the streets and stop at food stalls and the teacher or the tour guides only got us reservations at cheap places. oh, the hofbrauhaus is significant I guess. there was a table full of US tourists and a table full of asian tourists and someone started a conga line.

edit: I just remembered we at a fucking SUBWAY in dresden aaaa

afterwards we went to a mall in the new city so my friend could look for a Nena cd

yeah I know. that guy actually kind of ruined the trip for us. I only started to realize it towards the end, when I heard of all these cool places other people went in their free time. I got to eat at maybe one nice place near neuschwanstein then but we were leaving like the next day. he was also my bus buddy but he ditched me to sit in the back with girls, and then the one lunatic teacher sat next to me and bugged me.

I don't know about going out to eat. I have done it the past year much, much more than I ever have before but I am thinking of just how much money it costs to do, and how I dunno...what's the word. There's something I don't like about the assumption of going out for dinner. I think it's just me bein' a snob about bein' a slob. Maybe, anyway. Like I go to restaurants and I overhear the kinds of things people are saying - dinner talk - and I see phrases like 'BUSINESS LUNCH' and wonder what the heck am I taking part in here? I know good places don't have signs about business lunches though, but something still worries me about spending so much money on just eating.

It isn't that I don't care about eating well - I really like trying new things and I am working on learning how to make all kinds of food. Tonight I made green curry and it was really good! My best yet. I think I've made it 5 or 6 times, so I should make something new next time. I put the whole thing together for less than 10 pounds though, and it always makes enough for three meals worth. Also, I get that cool feeling of doing something nice for myself. I like to put the things together, and it's alot of fun food shopping when you don't have a clue what the things you are buying are going to add up to, or even what some of them are, really.

If I go to a restaurant, though, sometimes I walk out feeling like I am an asshole for spending so much money (which I never have alot of) on such an unnecessary thing. I guess my parents never really took me out to dinner except on holidays so I am not in the habit of it and I don't want to pick up any luxurious habits.

Going out every once in a while doesn't bother me so much, it's just I can't imagine being a person who eats out multiple times a week and ends up spending like 100 pounds on just a few meals.

Did not expect to see this, but I know exactly what you mean.  If I'm gonna miss anything about Tennessee it will probably be the awesome mom and pop country dinners you can get around here.

The best chicken I've ever had came from this really obscure country place that is actually tucked away in the woods around some farmland north of Nashville.  They grow all of their own fresh vegetables and buy chicken from the adjacent farmers so everything is quite literally straight from the land.  The closest thing they have to processed food is the fish, which comes from a catfish farm down the road.

I have yet to find a really true ethnic place around here.  There are standard Chinese/Japanese restaurants but more often than not you can really tell how they Americanize everything because people in the south are all TRUE GRIT about their food.

yeah a nice dinner here costs around $30, and i could make a much nicer dinner for far less than that. but i don't, i eat terribly and $30 of food will feed me for a month. i should stop doing this.

do you go by yourself usually or take black women?

for you dudes talking about the prices, you have to take into account that a lot of us live in places where eating out isn't expensive at all

restaurants are a lot more expensive in other places (like jesus christ new york cost so much) but here at jeans i can go get three fairly large pieces of fried chicken, an entire plate of french fries and rolls for like $8.

I don't eat out much because unless it's a GREASY SPOON CAFF you can't really eat alone without looking like a weirdo and I need to really want to sleep with someone to talk to them while I'm eating. I just wanna enjoy my food and think. I don't wanna fuckin talk to you, not while I'm eating

Im antisocial.

Leave me alone.

The world ends with me

$8 us is approximately $16 here. for $16 i could get a whole chicken and a couple kilograms of french fries.

granted if i was earning an income this wouldn't be so bad but since i'm not (or it's very limited) my time isn't worth that much (i.e. if i was making $20 an hour it'd be well worth paying $10 for something that took me half an hour to make (because of material costs also).

I really liked TGI Friday's when they had that 3 course meal for $13 thing going on. Now they stopped that so it's just another casual American dining place.

most of the restaurants i go to have a lot of retro pop culture memorabilia hung on the walls.

also i love the BRUCE LEE CHINESE CARRYOUT

they deliver to my work(which i would imagine would exclude them from being a carryout?????) and whenever they do everyone in the building gets an email from the front receptionist with the second grade reading comprehension that says BRUCE LEE IS IN THE LOBBY. i always have nice daydreams of bruce lee arriving for the purpose of punching that old woman through a wall.
