Title: Everythings gone to hell with this laptop
Post by: Brown on December 16, 2009, 09:09:42 pm
Oh man I'm so screwed. It is sort of my fault, okay well not sort of but more like all my fault. Last night I was trying to get Window Blinds pirated onto my computer. Well the instruction said that I would need to get NewSID v4.10 (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897418.aspx) and change my id to the one provided in the crack for Window Blinds. Well I do that, but it gets stuck on the processing screen for 3 hours. Meanwhile my laptop isn't making any kind of noise to indicate that its being used. So I got pissed at waiting so Ctrl+Alt+Deleted it and deleted NewSID. After that I gave up because it wasn't working and continued on to my daily activities (porn, gw etc). At the end of the night I turned off my computer and went to sleep. Now I wake up and turn it on and the first thing I notice is the login screen. Not only does it have the regular login screen,  but it has something called "switch user". Curiously I click on it and the other User is literally named "Other User". So I click on it and a blank username and password screen comes. Okay whatever fuck that so I go back, and login to my user. Right off the bat it says "Preparing Desktop". wtf. I wait 2 mins then EVERYTHING is resetted. My vista skin is changed to the original, the vista dock is up (even though I disabled it) and basically every tray icon that would appear if I hadn't disabled it from msconfig pops up.

Okay cool, so it reset my settings. Then, I go into my files, and they aren't there!!!! Fuckkk mee. I had so many things that were important (most importantly all my flstudio projects). Panicking, I start browsing through my hardrive. It STILL says 12.8 gb remaining out of 134 gb, so that means my files must be still there right? I goto "My Documents" and it only has one folder "Blue Tooth Exchange". I go to the "downloads" folder (the mother load of treasure on my laptop) and its EMPTY!!!! OMG. I opened up FireFox and it says "do you want to import settings from internet explorer".

I opened up jdiskreport to check out where my files would be and it doesn't help, it gives me a different comparison of myfiles and file sizes then I would imagine.

Is there any way for me to revert back to my original settings where I can see my 1000+ files? I learned my lesson I won't try to pirate Window Blinds again  :fogetcry:. Any help would be extremely appreciated! Thanks in advance.

when i try to look into the other users document it says i dont have permission and then it asks for a password.
there is literally no where to place the password even if I was to guess.

you should still be able to see how much space their user is taking up. i don't know about vista but in XP  if you're an administrator you can remove other users passwords iirc

yeah the weirdest thing. It says my user account is a guest account. Anything that requires administrative privileges asks for a password but doesn't show a spot to put the password in.

type it in regardless, see if safemode works. system restore? windows disc. this would be my line of approach

your line of approach was my line of approach about 2 hours ago. Safemode loads the same thing and files are still not there, typing the password in regardless didn't do anything (The Okay button is unhighlighted won't even let me click it), system restore tells me it couldnt find any restore points created, and my laptop didn't come with a vista disc it just came as it was from dell with a drivers disc. I've posted a thread on microsofts tech support but I have to wait for replies.

I do however have an XP disc with service pack 3. is it possible to go backwards in installing an OS (like from vista to xp)? If so how does 32 bit and 64 bit work? Do I have to have XP 64x or can it be the regular ? I have a disc called "Windows XP OEM" but i dunno if its 32 or 64 bit; does this matter?

you probably can't down-grade, it's usually a one way street. if the files are still taking up space on your harddrive you can find out where they are. in the f8 safe mode menu there may be something called "repair windows" but it sounds like a registry change so i'm not sure if this would even help at all

Can't you just use System Recovery to throw it back to a date where your laptop was still normal? I'm not sure where it's located in the english Windows, but Google is your pal.

Also I don't know if this is what you're talking about, but I originally had Vista on this laptop (when I got it it had Vista on), but I later formatted it and put Windows XP on it. I don't know how it works with 64 bits, so can't help you there, but maybe Google can find you something useful.

Good luck.

Try this. . (http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/)I ran into it myself when looking for  a version of vista WITHOUT sp1- needed for an "in-place upgrade repair- and have yet to try it. However, read carefully as I'm not certain whether this is waht you need. There are also various data-recovery programs out there, some of which are reviewed on the PC world  (http://pcworld.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,64564/description.html)site.

Terrorantula I tried that last night lol. Burnt it and booted it but even after that it said could not find a restore point. and the other options on the disc wouldnt do anything (one of them said to remove my usb mic, when I dont even have a usb mic).

I tried installing windows xp and it gave me the blue screen of death.

thanks for all your help guys but I dont think my laptop's files can be saved :(. I'm downloading a copy of windows vista home premium right now and am just going to reinstall it from scratch :(

if your files are still taking up space on the harddrive they're still on there. use www.windirstat.info to find really big files really easily (visually) and even if you can't access them you can copy them to a computer that wasn't ruined by a dodgy windows blinds download

it won't let me install anything. anytime i try to install something new (windirstat) a screen pops up asking for admin password with no where to put the password.

Does anyone know how to change a computer's SID without using NewSID?
Are there any other programs? I think the main problem is my SID. it got fucked up and theres an extra number in there somewhere. I need to create a new sid randomly but NewSID wont let me create one, it says to restore from a back up.  :fogetcry:

Download latest Ubuntu distro.  Burn to disc, boot from disc, choose run linux without installing, locate your files, backup to storage device, reinstall vista, copy over files.

vista has, on several occasions, not loaded my account properly and treated it as a guest account, but it was always fixed by another restart.
