Title: personal statement
Post by: jamie on December 17, 2009, 08:33:52 pm
i hate writing crap like this. personal statements, CV's, all that crap.

I don't talk like this!

where is the line between talking like a lazy politician and saying what you want to say? how do i know some boring square isn't going to read my statement and think 'wow this young man clearly isn't taking this very seriously'

i'm re-applying to UNI. after dropping out and becoming a Washed-Up Slacker, and i need to write a personal statement for my applications. i want it to be representative of me but I don't want to be too weird because then they'll blow me off.

oh heck i don't know, it'll be fine but i really hate writing this crap.

they are pretty weird to write. i would be serious but it doesn't necessarily have to be your manifesto of life.

i just wrote mine the other day (applying for the first time coz i aint a failure slacker) and basically i was told to first talk about what your gonna study , but in a MASSIVE WAY e.g i am gonna do physics and i was like PHYSICS HOLD THE ROOTS TO ALL THE SECRETS OF THE UNIVERSE and so on. serisously.

then talk about yourself and your achievements and WHY THEY SHOULD PICK YOU. THIS IS A COMPETITION! be like yeah I am a great team player and i worked out the meaning of life like, years ago. and so on.

say why you want to be at university, then end with being like YEAH UNI IS GONNA BE GREAT CANT WAIT (rhyming ftw) and you should be fine.

#1 personal statement writer right here.

Just don't start every sentence with "I".

My school was specifically looking for certain things, the biggest ones were why did I want to study at that specific university and any cultural/diversity experience I had. I mean basically my interaction with other cultures at that point was pretty much having a some black and korean friends and going down to mexico for a summer camp one year and was forced to volunteer to paint a YMCA in the middle of T.J. and got stoned as hell with some mexican kids during lunch.

it didn't go down like that in my essay. I contributed to the growth of a community center in a poverty-stricken neighborhood in mexico

I have had to write plenty of covering letters for job interviews. For the actual writing I tend to first bullet point what I want to say in each paragraph and under each one list the points I want to get across. It's essential that each point is as direct and brief as possible. Once I'm happy I will go through writing out the points as full sentences and paragraphs. For me this splits 'what I'm trying to say' and 'how do I phrase this' out into seperate tasks; making it easier.

Be direct, but not cocky or arrogant. Padding out sections makes them dull, boring and implies that your statement is just quantity rather then quality. Avoid this at all costs.

I would also aim to answer: Why that university?, why that course? what makes you a good candidate for that course? why re-join university? what has changed (i.e. why will you not drop out this time)?

Answering all of them should be enough to fill a whole page. Finally I highly advise doing as much research as you can about the uni and the course, drawing on this throughout your answers in order to relate your skills/experiences/interests to the university and the course (i.e. that your made for this course).

Be honest with them about who you are, and you'll do just fine.

Also, be honest with yourself about not blowing it all out of proportion and acting weird about it.

I recently wrote a personal statement for medical school applications. Here, the unwritten prompt was essentially: why do you want to be a doctor. Use this to be the personalized selling point for you, what you'll talk about in interviews and allow them to put a story with the name. It's a great way to set yourself apart, don't bomb it. Just tailor the statement to make relative to what you're applying for.
