Hello.
I would like to know if it's possible to play NTSC games on my PAL PS2, and how to accomplish it.
The reason is, I want to buy the game DBZ Budokai 1, which should be known as the first Budokai game ever, and for having detailed cutscenes no other DBZ game has. Anyway, problem is, the PAL version of this game has a terrible problem; the voices are in japanese. Now I wouldn't have it any other way with most animes, but I've been watching DBZ in english since I was a kid, so I really want the english funimation dub. In other words, the NTSC version of the game. Please don't say "Just buy the PAL version, the japanese voices are much better", because I've been told that before and it doesn't help. I want the english voices.
So, I will need to figure out a way to play NTSC games on my PAL PS2. I've searched Google ofcourse, lots of results, but no clear answer. I need someone, preferably with personal experience, to shed light on this.
Also, I already know my TV supports NTSC, so I just need to do something about the console.
One more thing; I have a slimline PS2, and if you're going to suggest Swap Magic, please also suggest me a store in the Netherlands that sells Swap Magic for the slimline PS2, or a store that ships to the Netherlands. I've searched Swap Magic before, but couldn't find this.
Hope anyone can help.

he's a total dick, ignore him.
also, wish I could help man, but I live in the free world (the funimation world) so I don't really know anything about PAL consoles. Try posting at speeddemosarchive.com , there's a lot of smart people there that know more than Buttkiller.

Doesn't the Netherlands have those little pirate shops you take your PS2 to and get it upgraded (with a modchip)? We have shops like that here.
-
Yeah, I guess, but I'm not really sure where they are or what they exactly do with the thing. Dunno if it's reliable.
Thanks for the link Jojo, will check it out.

I think if you use Magic Swap you can do this. Why not buy it online?
Here is a list of places where you can buy it:

From the site:
Netherlands Slidecard.nl --An online-shop in the Netherlands and Belgium. We sell only goods for the PS2: slidecard, flipflopcover, magic swap, magicswitch, console.

Guess I must have missed that, thanks. I think a Magic Switch will work out with the slimline PS2.

Just curious, does that also allow you to play copied games? I heard it does, but not sure. How much did it cost you?
Anyway, thanks for the help. Seems Swap Magic might be the fastest / easiest way to go about it, so I'll probably settle for that.

As far as I know, there's been nothing that I couldn't play. (Even burned my own Dual-Layer DVD game) Modchips are VASTLY superior to swap magic or whatever methods there are (just put the disk in and play) but if you can't get it then I guess swapping is something at least.

There's ways, once your ps2 is modded, to run gameloaders that can change certain games to show in the opposite region, PAL or NTSC
but these ultimately are no good, as the picture, even though it ends up clear and all, is very distorted and makes most games pretty unplayable.
Ultimately, if you have a game of the wrong region, you can't play it. There's hardware (RTF Modulators or something I think they,re called?) that can apparently get over this issue, but I had no luck/interest in getting one back then.
Some games do support both PAL and NTSC and allow you to switch upon startup, but yeah, some, not all.
So yeah with a modded ps2 you can run a game from another region, but tough luck having it show up correctly.

never had this problem. All the games I BUY are PAL and work fine. All the games I COPY/BURN are NTSC and work just fine. Problems only happen if you use a patch or something and force a game to run on a region it's not on. (converting PAL FFX into NTSC for eg).
-
Maybe you have a cross region tv or something, because I cannot run PAL games without them being gray and super distorted and fucked up and totally unplayable
No exceptions

You live in the USA? Here in Fiji, basically EVERY tv supports like, 4 or 5 different systems. PAL, NTSC, SECAM or something, then theres another version of NTSC etc.
I just set my tv to AUTO and thats that.
-
Well, I know my TV supports NTSC, because I have an American PSX and I play Chrono Cross on that (a game only released in Japan and USA), and the picture is fine. It even shows a little display on my TV that it's switching to NTSC.
-
yeah idk my tv was strictly ntsc
and it's common (or at least it was) for it to be that way in north america
-
Heh same thing happened to me i just took my sisters tv which supported ntsc but if yout having trouble you can buy a signal converter just search it on google.
-
if you don't change channels with a dial your tv should do both
-
no i dont know for lcd tvs and beyond but almost-latest gen crts here only did ntsc
ok
-
if your ps2 is modded you can get a Pal-Ntsc switch cd. if its not then swap magic might do the trick
-
that's not the only matter as has been said
if you're APPARENTLY GAY like me and your tv doesn't do both it won't work that good
-
Doesnt PS2 have freeloader?.
-
I have an NTSC Slim Ps2, and with Swap Magic and the flip top case mod I can run PAL games on it. I don't see why it wouldn't work for a PAL ps2. The only hiccup is that you may need a PAL-NTSC converter. Luckily I have one (it's like a VCR player that allows you to switch from PAL to NTSC) which works like a charm. Without it the games still run but you can't see anything other than grey lines going down the screen.
-
as has been said, yes
you need a converter if your tv doesn't natively support both pal and ntsc
can we stop repeating ourselves

you can get a pal-ntsc converter or use swap magic yeah!
