Title: Steam Games on Sale
Post by: Mama Luigi on December 23, 2009, 05:22:37 am
Hey figured I'd pass the word on about Steam's holiday sale going on right now. Some of these games are ridiculously cheap.

Some of the highlights:

Grand Theft Auto IV - $7.49!!!
Mirror's Edge - $4.99
World of Goo - $4.99
Medieval II: Total War - $4.99
Braid - $2.49
Audiosurf - $2.49
Indigo Prophecy - $3.39
DiRT - $9.99

Among many many others. Looks like most of the deals end January 3rd but they are switching out some of the deals over the course of the next two weeks as well so be mindful of that.

http://store.steampowered.com/

What are you waiting for? Get shopping

If my PC had the processing power of metal gear rex I would probably buy GTA4 for PC but I doubt I will have a computer that powerful in the next 10 years. So fuck it. I will stick with the horribly upscaled PS3 version on my shelf.

yeah, I bought a crap load of games. Waiting for more daily deals though.
I unfortunately already bought a lot of the good games with the good deals.

I have a question: does Indigo Prophecy end in a 'sequel hinting' cliff hanger? If so I'm not bothering with it because I know there wont be a sequel.

There is also a sale going on a gog.com that is got some pretty sweet deals.

no, as it's not going to be continued

the closest thing it's ever going to have to a sequel is probably gonna be heavy rain for the PS3

the only thing that i remember about indigo prophecy was that it absolutely sucked.  and i stopped playing after like an hour into the game because it sucked so much.  you could also play random theory of a dead man tracks on your radio.  that sucks because they suck.

I bought Medieval 2 Total War, Star Wars Republic Commando and Alpha Prime (it was only 50p). Lots of other good games, but too many of them I've played to death already.

I'd personally recommend X-COM: UFO Defence (http://store.steampowered.com/app/7760/).

Games I've bought from the steam sale:
Indigo Prophecy
Alpha Prime
Eidos Pack
Evil Genius
Borderlands
STALKER: Clear Sky
Sniper Elite
Garry's Mod
Killing Floor +2 character packs
Ghost Recon Pack

I also Bought a bunch of games on the GOG sale:
all the unreal games
All the Fallout games
Far Cry
Flatout
All the Descent games

Holy shit so any games. I'm set for the fucking year, maybe more. I'm already back logged from the past sales on steam, a couple of games I pirated or borrowed, and of course MW2 which is currently eating my time.

The games I have bought so far:

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky (ROW)
Oddworld Abes Oddysee and Exoddus package
Indigo Prophecy
Audiosurf
Foreign Legion: Buckets of Blood (x2, one for me, one for a friend to show him something)
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena
Prince of Persia: The Warrior Within
Prince of Persia: Two Thrones
Borderlands DLC: Dr. Ned (x2, both as gifts)

Today I plan on buying even more games, starting with the Fallout 3 GOTY Edition, possibly Red Faction, and I want to get some other games but I need some recommendations. Anyone got any?

Here are the games in my shopping cart atm:

Medieval II: Total War
Torchlight
Braid
Trine
World of Goo
Beyond Good and Evil
Indigo Prohpecy

I'm also considering buying:

Red Faction Guerrilla
Borderlands
L4D2
Fallout 3 GOTY
KOTOR

Especially considering Red Faction since it's so cheap for today, but I'm not sure if it's exactly my kind of game, although I've heard good things about it.

Yeah I am on the same fence with the Red Faction. I might just save my money and get Dragon Age instead as it looks boss. Despite being £26 on play.

Dragon Age is boss. Get it.

Though Red Faction is quite a bit of fun, not sure I can be bothered playing through to where I was again.

I might get Beyond Good and Evil and Torchlight, I've heard some good things about those games. What do you guys reckon?
Title: Steam Games on Sale
Post by: reko on December 26, 2009, 12:47:55 am
I played Beyond Good and Evil way back when it was released and it was awesome. It was one of the best games of Gamecube. I completely recommend getting it, 2e is a steal for it.

As for Torchlight I've heard great things about it from my friends, and it seems a lot of fun. I was going to buy it anyways, but since it's so cheap now no point postponing getting it.

I also bought Dragon Age Origins (Digital Deluxe Edition) last week. I think there was a bug in the EA Store, because for about a day or so you could buy it for 4,90e instead of the normal price of 54,90. :)

The 1st mission is totally bollocks so you have to sit through that for 30 mins but after that it will grow on you like a terrible consuming disease and take away all your time for it is just so incredibly awesome.

Imagine bioshock but cyberpunk and not creepy and gay (I am referring to the whole augmentation system where you change the physical traits of your character like an RPG). It's an RPG-FPS but on closed levels. The moral choices you can make are pretty entertaining as well. There are also ways to do levels differently each time around, i.e. without getting spotted or killing anyone (for some levels).

There are a lot of things to put you off to begin with, you just have to give it a chance. If a few of us are gonna play it again (or for the first time) we should make a thread and have some Deus Ex banter 'cause that'd be totally RAD.

i loved it when i first pirated it on the original xbox. It had the gta-esque feel as well as some parts of mercenaries (which was bomb!). I just loved hooking onto a passing by helicopter from the ground and being ziplined quickly to attempt a hijack. Apparently there is a sequel coming out too which i gotta check out.

Psychonauts is an excellent platformer, especially if you have a bit of nostalgia for the GOOD OL DAYS of Saturday morning cartoons. The setting and levels are very cool. It's a Tim Schafer game, so expect Secret of Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, etc style humour.

Also, take it from a guy who didn't play Deus Ex much when it was actually new: It's still very playable. Sure, the graphics are obviously dated but the gameplay holds up very well even today. I don't have a "nostalgia boner" for it but I still really enjoyed it when I went through it earlier in the year.

for 14$ you get all the Unreal games (Unreal Gold, Unreal 2, UT GOTY, UT2004 Editor's Choice and UT3 Black)

they're all torrentable and playable online without being legit, but eh

they do deserve some $$ for being what they are

and well 14$ is pretty inexpensive

Not at all! It's better than most PC exclusive controllers, plus it's not that expensive (you can get wired controller for 30 bucks or so), plus if you ever were to get a 360 you'd have one extra controller available already. But if you don't play games that require a controller for better game play, it's kind of waste of money for you then.

don't hate on the man

360 controllers are the best controllers for PC unless you play fighting games on stuff like 2df, thankfully I have my old saitek for that incase I need it

but yeah 360 controller on PC is amazing, and most recent PC games (or semi recent) have preset configs for it that oftentimes end up exactly like their console counterparts (if they exist)

they're not that expensive (wired ones), infact they are as expensive as regular pc controllers

and so much superior

this really threw me off the game. I got riddick for 360 and it came with the first one for original and assault on dark athena. Since I didn't beat the first one for xbox (got to the prison where you gotta fight in the ring and then somehow gradually end up escaping), i decided to play it first and oh man, some parts piss the shit out of me. Setting to easy really helps.

Yeah agree 100% - 360 controller on PC is the greatest thing to happen in the PC controller scene. Console controllers have always had such an advantage as far as quality, comfort, and durability go - now the 360 controller is USB and can virtually be plugged in and played in many games just like it does on the 360.

I just picked up Killing Floor as well. Here's to hoping it plays as well as it looks!

If no one has picked up Braid yet, I beat it yesterday and can confirm how great it is. 2.49 is a pretty good price for this game, although it's pretty short but if you're into speed running then the levels have challenge times to keep you entertained. It's one of the best platformer/puzzle hybrid games i've ever played.

EDIT: If anyone wants a guest pass(which allows you to play a trial version of Killing Floor) then IM me. I've got two, so the first two who IM me with their e-mail associated with Steam gets one.

Also yeah anyone who likes Mass Effect or Dragon Age and hasn't tried Jade Empire should really buy it. It's like those but set in JAPAN and you are a KUNG FU MASTER.

No but really it actually is worth that price. I never beat it because it's so ffffffffucking long but until I just got bored of the game it was a blast.

Has anyone played Half Life: Source? Although the second game in the series boasted much better graphics and gameplay, I slightly prefer the first due to it's enviroment and overall feel. But the prospect of playing through the first Half Life on the Source engine really intrigues me. And at a pricetag of 2.49, I decided to give it a shot. Can someone give me an idea as to what i'm heading into before I play?

Goodness.

When I purchased HL: Source, I was reminiscing back to the trailer of Black Mesa i.e. I confused HL: Source for Black Mesa. Regardless, it was only 2.49 and i'm fiercely debating whether or not to play through the campaign once again, or wait for Black Mesa to come out. I'll probably do the latter =\

I've bought a shitload of titles, partly because I've been wanting to try most of them and partly because they went for around €2. I guess it's kind of nuts of me to buy so many games, but I've never been into paying €60 for a video game unless I know for sure it's good, so this was a good opportunity to catch up on games that could've potentially disappointed me.

Here's the list in case anyone's interested!

Beyond Good and Evil
Deus Ex
Deus Ex 2
Heroes of Might and Magic 5
Hitman: Blood Money
Max Payne
Max Payne 2
Abe's Exoddus
Abe's Oddysee
Overlord II
Penumbra: Black Plague
Penumbra: Ovberture
Penumbra: Requiem
Prey
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones
Prince of Persia: The Warrior Within
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
Serious Sam HD
Street Fighter IV
Torchlight
World of Goo
Morrowind
Mass Effect

So far I regret buying Heroes 5, Max Payne and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Heroes 5 because it's a complete piece of shit and is nothing at all like the previous games in the series, Max Payne because, well, it's not as cool as I recalled, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. because it's so horribly slow/badly coded that I can't play it for more than a couple of minutes. All in all I'm pretty satisfied with the purchases though. If you guys haven't already you should definitely get Prince of Persia, Abe and Deus Ex. They're all really good series.

I bought Morrowind: GOTY... the rest of the current "today only" sale doesn't interest me for various reasons:

Trine: Heard its a Diablo clone. played maybe 30 minutes of Diablo 2 and thought it was 'meh'.

RA3: I have never really been into RTS games. I like being on the ground IN the fight rather then floating over it. Or if I'm going to build up a attack force or defense I've always desired more customization than what RTS's can provide. (the amount I'd want would slow the gameplay down quite a bit)

Pain Killer collection: Saw my brother play one of them. It appears to be incredibly derivative and dull to me.

Anyone want to try to change my mind on any of these? (note: I already own CSS)

I hate to circle jerk about steam but they do provide a pretty great service... I wish they'd see that cutting the cost to the point where the customer feels like he's getting a terrific deal works to their advantage, and that they'd have insane sales more often. It made me - someone who hasn't bought a game legally in over a year - make the jump on at least 3 games throughout the sale period. The word got out quickly that Steam was having a big sale and I'm sure they made a LOT of money, and got a lot of new customers - which gives them market domination. Also, all the copies are digital... they didn't lose anything in production costs. They could have sold any game for .99 and they probably still would have made nearly pure profit (savor minuscule server costs). Finally, it works well for developers because these sales no doubt greatly increase install base which will make selling sequels easier.

They're pretty good games.  And for $2 if you don't like it it's not like you're out much.  By the way, do the games downloaded from Steam contain DRM?  I own copies of both Freedom Force games, but don't want to install them thanks to the damned Starforce DRM included on the discs.  Fucking thing killed my last computer.

Hey figured I'd pass the word on about Steam's holiday sale going on right now. Some of these games are ridiculously cheap.

Some of the highlights:

Grand Theft Auto IV - $7.49!!!

World of Goo - $4.99
Medieval II: Total War - $4.99
Braid - $2.49
Audiosurf - $2.49

Shadowgrounds
Rating: 74/100

Reviews

"There have been a lot of games throughout the last two decades that have pulled off great run-and-gun gameplay. The old school title Alien Syndrome comes to mind, as does Crusader: No Remorse. If you are looking for an updated version of either of those two titles, you can't go wrong with Shadowgrounds."
- GamingTrend

"Shadowgrounds takes a page from Smash TV, offering an overhead view of explosive chaos. Shadowgrounds is an ambitious work and admirable accomplishment for a small developer."
- IGN

About the Game

Shadowgrounds breathes fresh air into the action genre with explosive combat sequences, an innovative weapon upgrade system, and an intriguing storyline. The adrenaline-pumping, top-down gameplay and audiovisual fireworks set the scene for this new action experience which also includes single computer (split keyboard or joystick) co-op play.

UPGRADE THOSE WEAPONS! Use a devastating arsenal of high-tech weaponry to dispose of the alien threat. Each weapon has multiple upgrades that maximize the carnage. Unleash the flames of the Flamethrower's Fuel Trap, cause mayhem with the Grenade Launcher's Poison Grenades, slash and dice the monsters with the Laser Rifle's Pinpoint Laser - and many more!

WHAT LURKS IN THE SHADOWS? Shadowgrounds uses cutting-edge realistic lighting and glow technology to light up the battlefield and create detailed shadows producing an atmosphere of fear. But the lighting and the flashlight also affect some aliens' behavior - take advantage of that and you can turn the tide in the game of fear by using your flashlight effectively.

DESTRUCTIBLE ENVIRONMENT! What good are weapons and special effects if you can't wreak havoc on the environment? Shadowgrounds lets you go all-out - glass shatters, ground shakes, trees fall, barrels explode and furniture blows to smithereens. You can use the environment to your advantage.

THEY'RE BIG AND NASTY! Big, brutal monsters await you. Prepare to face many different bosses who will do anything to stop your journey. They're nasty, blood-thirsty beasts, but don't give in to fear - remember to use the environment and the lighting to your advantage!

Upgrade weaponry with powerful modifications.
Face enormous monsters in boss battles.
Destructible environment allows you to wreak havoc with your arsenal.
Visit many exciting locations, including a secret military base and the alien-infested colony New Atlantis.
Fight side-by-side with NPC allies against the massive alien hordes.
Check security cameras and computer logs to investigate alien origins.
Realistic lighting with gameplay effects bring the aliens out of the shadows.
Enjoy horrifying sound effects and a thrilling music soundtrack made exclusively for Shadowgrounds.

Reviews

"I greatly enjoyed the unending masses of aliens which I splattered all over the landscape with pistol, machine gun, and flame thrower."
- GamersWanted - 92% (full review)

"[The] developers decided to "remix" this game and release a hybrid expansion/follow-up. The result is Shadowgrounds Survivor, and it's every bit as good as the first release. Survivor, the extended remix of Shadowgrounds, is a must-have for any fans of action-horror."
- Worthplaying - 89% (full review)

"FrozenByte definitely has a winner on its hand. If you have the hankering to play an action top down shooter that looks good and has addictive gameplay, look no further than Shadowgrounds: Survivor."
- GamingTrend - 89% (full review)

"I don't know of any other top-down shooters for the PC which are done as well, or look as good or cost $20. You also receive the tools to completely mod the game and create additional maps. Generally my rule is that if I feel like replaying a game right after I finish it, that's a good enough indication of its worth, and Survivor is definitely worth it."
- 2024 - 85% (full review)

I bought Shadowgrounds Survivour when it was even cheaper than it is now, it is a pretty fun game, especially if you get it for less than $5. Simple but effective controls, fun gameplay, good atmosphere. It would make a great Co-Op game (seriously, developers need to think harder about these things!) but it's a great game nevertheless.

There aren't really any other things I'd want that I can think of ATM though.

EDIT: NVM They have a "Edit categories..." button in the game library section.

The games library list is totally too much info + system resources. Yeah it LOOKS nicer but god damn way to step back in usability. The games were a lot easier to identify when they had icons next to the text.

Possibly worth while discount: 7 Indie games, each for $2 USD or all 7 for $10 USD.

I might pick one or 2 of them up since they are so cheap... 2 dollars is nothing for what appears to be at least semi-decent games.
Original prices vary.

Altitude (2D aircraft shooter)
GameRankings: 81 (based on 2 reviews)

Bob Came in Pieces (2d physics puzzle platformer with "lunar lander" style controls)
(no reviews)

Bullet Candy (Geometry wars style game)
(no reviews)

Galcon Fusion (Abstract 2d RTS)
(no reviews)

Gridrunner Revolution (Another Geometry wars style game)
Metacritic: 79

Space Giraffe (2d shooter?)
gamerankings: 52 (Based on 1 review, however, the 360 version got 71.12% on gamerankings based on 26 reviews)

Super Laser Racer (2D topview racing game)
(no reviews)

EDIT: decided on Altitude and Bob Came in Pieces. Rest look 'meh' to me.

If I have money in my account by the 14th I can buy you one of them (there's no reason to really want Invisible War anyway, to be honest.)

Today they've got 50% off of Mini Ninjas and Gyromancer, 14.99 and 7.49 respectively, but if you buy them in a bundle it's only 15.29!
