Title: oh my fucking shit-- stargate universe (spoilers)
Post by: cowardknower on December 26, 2009, 06:53:45 am: so i just finished watching ep 10 of sgu. it is REALLY REALLY GOOD.
easily could turn out to be my fav sci fi show. it totally takes a page from bsg with the 3 letter acronym and mostly non episodic format. and the larger amount of character development and focus on like internal issues and soap opera shit. very cool.

standout moments/episodes were:
ep 08 - time ==== was fucking great!!!! i mean i knew what was going to happen before it was done but it was very very cool. i like that you found out some character secrets without them actually telling EVERYBODY on the ship these secrets. like that eli's mom has aids. nobody actually knows that but eli but we now know it.

ep 09- life
that had a couple great moments.

i really loved rae's partner's whole thing. up until that moment they were really vague as to who the woman she mentioned in the first episode when she said "tell XXXXX that my last thoughts were of her" was. i thought it might have been a daughter, although love interest did cross my mind. but when she walked into the house and they were all romancey it was beautiful!

and then later on when she realized she forgot the boat in the painting. that was great. really sad. fucking brilliant.

ep 10- justice

THEY FUCKING LEFT RUSH ON THE PLANET WHAT. THEY CANT DO THAT he cant just die. he was one of my fav characters so brilliant but so fucking awful. such a screwy guy. but the irony/symmetry here is great. the commandercolonelwhatever guy is exonerated of killing spencer for the benefit of the crew and then he turns around and effectively kills rush for the benefit of the crew. BRILLIANT!

so so so so good. i cried. just saying.

i am really pumped that they are going to start episodes again in april.

Admittedly I did like a few moments here and there but most of it, is terrible.. especially those damn videos we had to sit through during most of the first few episodes done by each and every crew member, they were painfull. I always knew they were going to stir off from the original and Atlantis but they removed everything which was great about the original show, honestly I'm not sure this show will last that long if it continues on the way it has.. its moving too slow for the average viewer in my opinion and most sci-fi fans who enjoyed the original I doubt have any interest in the soap opera bullsh*t.

Post by: cowardknower on December 26, 2009, 07:37:55 pm: dude the original stargate show WASNT THAT GOOD. Like it had really brilliant science stuff going on that was really cool but it was definitely totally lame at points. really goofy. it felt like a goofyass sci fi show.

sgu feels less like one imo.

<edit> and i'm saying that from the perspective of a definite fan-- I've seen that whole show. My family's got the whole series on dvd.

Post by: xanque on December 26, 2009, 08:48:41 pm: I never saw Stargate SG-1 or Atlantis, but I've liked Universe so far. It's not even close to perfect, or even a great show, but it has its moments. It's nice to see another sci-fi show without cheesy aliens.

The biggest problem I have with it is the daughter of the senator. I think her name is Chloe. I can't stand her. She's one of those weak female characters whose only purpose is to be tragic and cry all the time. There is another female character who is much stronger, but rarely gets any screen time even though she's much more interesting.

I would like to see them visit some unique planets, the kinds that aren't just one climate (desert, jungle, or whatever), but something new.

The advanced race called the Ancients built the Stargate which allows you to travel from planet to planet within your own galaxy, you need a shitload of extra power to travel to other galaxies which we don't have.

That's all you need to know, enjoy the show.

that said i recommend watching all canon stargate, its one of the most in depth, best realised and impressively internally consistent sci fi tv shows ever made. even SGA had its moments (mainly mckay)

there are no other planets in sci-fi except like CRATERY planet and that one time they had a snow planet in star wars

and like planet that's all buildings and cities and nothing else

I'm kidding but sci-fi is incredibly biased towards these things

But it was pretty obvious, that Rush was going to use the ship going. Just have to wait and see.

I like it so far. They are going into a new direction of maturity, then SG-1.

It's not as great as BSG was in its first two seasons yet, but we'll see where this show goes. It keeps getting slightly better with each episode, so that's promising. Anyway, I really couldn't get into the other Stargate series as I found them extremely cheesy and too light-hearted. Now, this I can watch. I can see how some hardcore Stargate fans can be offended by SGU since it's so different from what they're used to, but I like this show so far.

Give Chloe a purpose though, since she's so useless. I can see her being used in the event they come across new alien life, so maybe that's where the show is going to go. They can't just fly around aimlessly forever without meeting an adversary - this whole, "the ship is falling apart, we are going to die! No wait, the ship itself will save us by taking us to where we have to go, hurray!" bit is going to get old very fast. I want to see more intership politics and conspiracy.

It kinda cheats you when Eli, Chloe and Scott end up making it back to Destiny, for some reason, even so they left the galaxy. I think it's possible, the Lucian Alliance made sure this happen or the aliens. Or it's just pure luck.

I have to agree that Chloe is pretty useless.

Though I give the series so far 8/10. SG-1 may of not had that much emotion then SGU. But it still kicked ass.

Rush is my favorite character. Lesbian hoe as well. lol.
