i don't get how wow has caught on like it has. i'm not a mmo guy at all, but i've played a lot of mmos that were kinda vaguely fun to play for an hour or two, even if they didn't have any long term appeal to me. everything aside about wow's success and popularity or whatever, i found it to be the most unstimulating mmo i've ever played. i guess there is this endless supply of great content or whatever, but i found the visual style and basic gameplay exceptionally childish and dull.

on a purely ANIMALISTIC level i understand the appeal of mmos, but i legitimately do not understand what people could possibly like about wow outside of the fact that billions of people play it religiously.

i think it's just the combination of the addictive nature of mmo's and the already established fanbase of warcraft.  i think that's all there is to it really!  a lot of people were already mildly invested in the warcraft series, so here comes the same stuff in mmo form and now you're playing a game where every time you're about to complete something you end up starting something else and so you never feel like you've got a good stopping point and you keep playing for the rest of your life.

that's just madness. particularly considering the fact that final fantasy 11 is kinda the same scenario, but most everyone eventually woke up to the fact that it isn't at all fun. kinda is the key word there, i guess, because at least you can be vaguely productive in wow. you can play for hours in final fantasy 11 and not accomplish shit. maybe that's the key difference there?

i dunno, it still perplexes me. i've known some relatively intelligent people play this game for years. i don't think you can do that with a game if you find it revolting. maybe i just don't GET wow.

still don't know how people don't get immediately turned off by how ugly of a game it is. usually i'm not awfully picky about that, but wow is just a fucking unpleasant thing to look at.

yeah i think maybe that's the difference, you feel like you at least get something done with wow but the problem is you've always got something that needs doing and i think that's why people keep playing it.  it's not like another game where you finish a level or beat a boss or something and you get a nice stopping point and put the game down, you've always got something that you need to be working on so i guess it's a game that rewards you with things without actually making you feel like you've completed everything you set out to do that particular day so you just keep going without realizing that what you're actually doing isn't all that fun

As a former avid player of MMOs I have to agree. And this is coming from the original blizzard fanboy... one who still played WC3 for 8 years straight. The only qualities it has over other MMOs are the ones brought on by the fact that it's on top (money gives way to a lot of neat things...) but not much else besides that. It's a shame because other, more deserving mmos often die because they couldn't pick up enough steam to stay updated.
