Title: My life as an artist is over!
Post by: rydia_fan on January 23, 2010, 12:51:48 am
Now I'm a software engineer.  No more starving artist for me :woop:

I gave the game industry a good go as an artist, but after being taken advantage of as an intern - I've returned to my original career goals. Apparently, the company I was doing 3D contract work for really liked me. I did some technical work for them for a few months and now they've just hired me on as a software engineer.   I'm super excited.

I suppose the ironic thing here is that now I'll get normal hours and have time/money to play video games and do other hobbies - like art :) - I just won't be doing it for a meager living and surviving 70 hour week crunch modes with never ending unhealthy pizza dinners.

Congrats! Uh.. what does a software engineer do though? Programming and stuff?

I've been considering going to art school to become either a freelancer or working for some random company
but I guess it really is as I thought it would be (shit if you're not something UNIQUE, which I ain't and work pretty
much 24/7 when there's actually work to be done).

God I hate being interested in the wrong stuff if you wanna get a job (drawing and music)

Yeah, a software engineer is just a programmer. Right now I'm doing some research/scripting to automate the placement of certain kinds of art assets. So the fact that I have experience as an artist is really helpful. I don't actually sit in a cubicle, but they told me I could have one if I wanted one.

I'm sure plenty of artists are happy with their jobs. The job market here right now is just crappy, so it's hard to get the good ones and it's hard to break in initially.

I got a friend that get's around 3000 usd a month (and this is the newbie pay so he'll get around 4500
in two years or so) to fix bugs on some dvd-equipment AND he get's to travel to different countries to
get drunk with the bosses for free
, which is probably the most awesome thing I've ever heard) so
programming seems to be the way to go even if you're into artistic line of work in gaming.

Well.. at least that's my theory so far; get a work as a programmer and convince people in the company
to give you freedom to design your own games.

Actually, $3000 usd a month is pretty low for a beginning programmer in most fields. Traveling is cool tho. A lot of people at my work get to go on business trips once in a while. I mostly enjoy having every other Friday off all year long :).

As far as designing your own games; I think as a programmer you have the biggest chance to start your own company. The 3d contractors at my work are always talking about making their own game, but they just don't have a programmer with the appropriate knowledge.

I'm happy for you. I remember you made that topic about your boss and how she was being horrible to you. Glad things worked out.

Art is a great thing to have a hobby in, but a terrible thing to have a "career" in. Especially in this day and age.

It's the exact same reason I decided to become an software engineer myself. How uncanny.

It seems to be the case for most freelancers that the best thing about doing it is having that day job to fall back on!

Seriously though, living contract to contract is nerve wracking[sp?] and more often than not people aren't willing to pay you residuals and if you get too picky about things they will simply replace you with someone else.... a fact a lot of people are aware of when they are treating you like shit (or so I've heard, I managed to snag a few comfortable, consistent deals so far). Art is not a secure field at all...

If I ever make the decision to turn into a complete fag, I'm going to make a topic right here in Gaming World just so I can brag.

Because that's what fags do.

Fortunately for me, web programming tends to be a field in which trust is desirable. People aren't likely to stop working with me unless I actually mess something up, because there are good and bad programmers and it's hard to tell who's which.

I really don't know where you guys tried to be artist, or what art fields exactly, but I just pulled in 4gs in just freelance work this month, I don't even touch my work checks. I'm in Graphic Design and Web Design. and I'm still in school.

I know chainer is more of a illustrator and that can be hard.

Actually:
Quote from: Urban Dictionary
1. An extremely annoying, inconsiderate person most commonly associated with Harley riders.
2. A person who owns or frequently rides a Harley.
" Look at that fag riding that Harley."
"Why are these fags always so loud."

Congrats!! That's awesome that that company worked out. Even if it's a peculiar direction.

Our company actually got bought out by Zynga, so now I'm an art producer there as of a few months ago.
I just wanted to say that I miss you on aim, and that's the reason I'm never on.

Being wicked busy that is.
