This post alone has actually inspired me to think about trying Mass Effect again because last time I tired again I couldn't make it past the Make a Shep stage. Maybe I will this time?

I hate how he looks like that if you go renegade. Stupid, in my opinion. Anyway, what happened to renegade being the guy who acts like a dick, but in the end actually does the right thing. That just eminates SUPER EVIL BADASS. Goddamn Bioware

The renegade shep doesn't have to do that. The reason he goes like that is "simple mind over matter" from what Dr. Chakwas and the Mass Effect Codex says. Morally bad actions and thought patterns will reverse the healing of his scars and fuck up his cybernetics. Although you can buy a med bay upgrade at the research stand and completely heal him, so that that doesn't happen. Also a renegade shep does still save the day, he just does it in usually a more badass way.

i played deus ex with the shifter mod that gives you points for killing enemies. if you injure a civilian they turn into enemies. i killed every man, woman, and child. i killed the cats and dogs. i blew up the cleaning bots. to injure people i would either shoot them in the leg or knife their legs. i killed every single person at tracer tongs base. i saved hostages and executed them myself.

i break every single piece of furniture, art, public property and every window i see. i get drunk, high, turn on all the faucets and leave every door wide open. if there's a computer in sight i hack it and read the all the private e-mails of every single account available.

but i don't hurt people.

i've tried to do that in a bunch of games, but usually they make it too impractical and time-consuming to really pull off.

i think a simple good vs bad division is probably important in games where you kill people

I always thought games that only rewarded you for being either GOODY GOODY or TOTAL DICKHEAD and kind of left you hanging if you stayed neutral was kind of an bullshit. I usually go good guy, because that's usually canon for any possible sequels. And it makes it so that if I play the sequel shit actually makes sense.

I kill only those who actively try to kill me of any of my in game allies. And if they give up or show forgiveness I let them live.
If they insult MY character, I leave them be. If they insult/hurt my allies I'm likely to beat their face in, but not kill them.

Its funny though I've only played very little of the first game. I couldn't get into the gameplay. I'll eventually try it again though, Because I played KOTOR and loved it and I'm sure there is some good story in there.

I hope he's in Episode 3 in some form. Just like how I want Chel and GLaDOS from Portal to be in episode 3 in some form...

Hell I just want to play Episode 3...

well there's a difference between something like deus ex or gta where there are people milling around that you can optionally kill or will attack if you fuck up and something like kotor where the core idea behind the story is that you're either nauseatingly good or absurdly evil, with zero middle ground. basically i can respect it as a very basic gameplay dynamic, but not as a story dynamic. you can do a lot of pretty interesting things by promoting it as some sort of gameplay dynamic(see: hitman), but it's just bad storytelling to divide people into purely good/evil categories.

oh, and i am generally talking about games that have some degree of free will, or aim to create the perception of that. i don't give enough of a shit about the story of MEGAMAN to honestly ask why there isn't any sort of moral ambiguity there. i just find it rather obnoxious when games try to pass themselves off as having a great deal of free choice, and a story related to that, and then give you one STOCK GOOD ROUTE and some STOCK EVIL ROUTE that there is virtually no divergence from.

i think gta did it fairly well in the last one by basically presenting you as a morally ambiguous but sympathetic main character, developing a core personality around that, and assuming that yes you do do plenty of bad things but your rampaging around is essentially noncanonical.

doing good/evil things in mass effect and seeing their results is cool as long as you don't stop and think of how poorly-designed it is

one moment in the first one that actually had me laughing for a while is (i can't remember it that well) when there's some asari woman that was taken over by evil plant monsters or something (i need to replay it) and when you save her, for some reason you get the ability to execute her brutally despite her not posing a threat to you and actually trying to help you

it's just like "thanks for saving me... shepard" and then shepard is all like "Yeah, fUck youuu *bolws your fucking  brans out*"
