Title: If you had a year off, what would you do?
Post by: XxNemesis29xX on February 14, 2010, 09:23:07 am
I'm 22, I haven't done a single thing really since August 2009. Applied to med. school and got in, so I decided to treat myself and take a year off and do absolutely nothing until till August when classes start (and boy will they ever start).

So far, aside from interviewing and traveling here and there, I've seriously just been GAMING to no end. So far, I've played and beaten Magna Carta 2, Fall out 3, Uncharted 1 and 2, Army of 2, Valkyria Chronicles, Resistance, Bioshock, Last Remnant, Dragon Age, Resident Evil 5, and am working on Mass Effect right now. In the coming months, I plan on playing Mass Effect 2, FFXIII (obviously), Resonance of Fate, Dragon Age: Awakening, and MAYBE White Knight Chronicles and Bioshock 2... so I'll be busy before I have to lock up my game systems in a safe and throw the key out.

I've also been juggling LOST, FlashForward, V, Office, How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory, Parks and Recreation, Community, Modern Family, Important Things, Family Guy, and 24... which has been a lot of work, seriously.

Aside from interviewing, other productive things I've been doing are... keeping up with politics , reading biochemistry/physiology/microbiology to prepare for classes, but definitely not finding a job cause work sucks.

What would you do if you have 1 full year to kick back and do whatever?

I started my 1 year off october 2009. Im still enjoying it. just like you, I'm gaming a lot. As well have been recording songs and what not with a couple of friends. I'm still looking for a job so I can get my camry back. It sucks having a lot of spare time but no wheels to enjoy it with. I've been taking it pretty easy lately. Got a gym routine working for me and also watching a lot of tv shows that I would normally not watch (ie. Supernatural, The Office etc.)

I would probably spend a lot of my time finishing all of the projects that I really want to finish but have no time for. After all of those were done I would probably get a job to fill up the rest of the time. Otherwise just some lazy stuff like watch TV, play games. You know; the usual.

No-one, on their death bed ever said "My only regret is not playing more video-games"

If I had a year off, I'm not sure what I'd do. I'd probably end up just being a missionary or something? I'd like to take at least one mission trip in my life so a year off would probably be the ideal time to do it in. I've got friends who have been to places like Kenya and Peru and they all say the times they had their were amazing experiences and really beneficial spiritually. Yeah, that's what I'd but but I'm really bonkers.

I would hopefully take that time to work together with talented individuals to create interesting projects. I've been trying to do this but failing due to being so damn busy all the time. I've been meaning to make a PHP framework with Cliff, a game with Hundley, a retro game site with Drule, plus a bunch of other projects with both people I know online and people I know offline. Then there's the sheer amount of personal projects I've had going.

So in the end, I'd probably end up doing much of the same as what I'm doing right now, except far more interesting and unpaid.

Yeah, there definitely is a lot of "better" things I could be doing. Gaming is a pretty lame activity by a lot of other people's standards... but really, when I look at it, this'll be the last time I'll really have a lot of time to do what I want until I'm 65 and retired. ...Honestly, that's not an exaggeration.

yeah but you still shouldn't spend it on games!! do dumb stuff explore things think about your life. think about it really hard. talk to everybody and ask things. experiment with everything. i could list a lot of things i would do with a year off!!!

hahaha, yeah I know, I should reflect about life... and I do. Life's about to change, it already has, but I'm going to leave home, move a 1000 miles away and start something I've fought to start for 4 years, it's exciting! But... I guess for the MAJORITY of the time, I goof off

I'm intending to spend a year or two volunteering abroad somewhere once I leave college so maybe that idk. Most of them seem to require either a degree or a year of prior experience and I'm kind of skeptical about the ones that don't anyway!! bored college kids shlupping around starving villages in $100,000 jeeps. mmmm yeeess what a.....powerful life experience im having *steps over corpse in street*. I still want to try it though because either way it'd have to be better than just sitting in front of a fucking computer.

Sweet mother of mercy a year off? I'd do all the things that people consider a waste of time that I took for granted now that I work a 12 hour shift job. I'd literally count each hour in that year, because that's how I do this jobs hours vs my free time.

I'd play "crappy free MMO's" like Wonderking and S4 League more often and work on my rpg maker game that I never finished. If I had money I'd want to travel and meet people I know online just to mess with them. A year off is like the best thing to you once you realize that you WILL have to work in life or get lucky and be rich in a sense. I know many will say "then work for something you enjoy" which is true, but sadly I can't find what I enjoy waking up to, maybe a year off would help me decide.  :welp:

I'm coming back to read through this but I gotta go workin again real soon.

If I had the money to do this then I would lock myself away in the middle of nowhere with some food and a guitar, plus a bunch of other instruments I wanna learn (harmonica, banjo, fiddle) and not leave until I learned music theory and mastered each instrument because I want to write my own music along with good lyrics there is nothing I want to do more then just jam the fuck out anywhere and sound awesome and get to tour or write my own album one day.

I want to be a blues king and a folk fiend and I wanna rock out with my cock out until I get knocked out

I'd travel the US via cheap ways like riding a bike places or taking megabus to cities in the Midwest I've never been to.  Once I get to those cities I'd just walk around taking pics and going to eat and stuff like that.  Obviously with friends :)

honestly, i don't think i'd take one.  Like i'd just feel lazy doing nothing, and the things that i'd do in my free time are mostly the same things i'd want to do in the future anyways, so it would seem like not that much of a thing

I'm hopefully taking another year off next year and I'm going to book a ticket around the world. I think it should have about 7 different stops. That's if my plans work out of course.

How do you just take a year off out of college? How are you going to pay for food and rent and shit? Are you a trust fund kid or something?

Dogg, you can totally volunteer at a food bank and feel good about what you're doing without engaging in third world poverty tourism. The reason programs like the ones you mentioned want skilled applicants is because they don't want to send a bunch of privileged first world parasite kids who don't know shit to work on infrastructure projects.

Yeah this is true! I guess the third-world stuff is more appealing on some level in terms of uh a dramatic break with everyday life/accumulatr experience (ive seen things you wouldnt believe...... attack ships on fire off the coast of orion....) but doing stuff at home would possibly be more effective without the queasy voyeuristic tourism part.

This requires running out of money then saying to yourself "hey I cant pay for this year might as well take it off". I wish I was a trust fund kid, i'd be done college by now...

could not agree more with this!!! maybe not in a literal sense but taking the time out to experience life and open your mind is a much more valuable and enjoyable way to use your year off than SOLID GAMING FOR 24 HOURS UGH MUST FINISH MASS EFFECT TWO INSTEAD OF SEEING THE WORLD

why would you want to study medicine???

i feel like i've had four years off already, it sucks when the balance between work time and play time is out of whack in either direction. i'd really hate to have a year off and i'd probably do a bunch of little courses or find some part time work or something. i guess having money makes a huge difference too because on my days off it's pretty much which screen do i want to sit in front of, and while it's alright for a month it gets really tedious when you essentially can't do anything else. "might as well finish that level" etc.

Hey, first off congrats on getting into med school! :) Looks like all your hard work paid off.

If I had a year off, I'd spend it learning to do stuff I always wanted to do. Learn to play the guitar on a basic level at least, learn the fundamentals to a couple foreign languages I've wanted to know, random little skills here and there.
If I had time and money for it, I'd visit a place or two, and try some new things.

I wasn't too specific I guess, but if I knew that I was entering a profession where I'd have little free time, I'd do all these little things I always wanted to do before I died.

Oh, naturally, I'd read a bunch of books too.

But just for the record, you will still have free time dude. You just have to manage it.

EDIT: Oh, I'd also try to learn how to draw on atleast a basic level, and probably write a few short stories here and there.

Well, I don't have the money to travel the world. It'd be nice to do that, but none of my friends have that kind of money/time since THEY aren't taking a year off. And I'd only go if I had my best friends to come along for the ride. Besides, if I did have any money saved, it'd go to medical-school expenses... since it'll cost me $67,000 my FIRST year ($44,000 for subsequent years).

Quote

And yeah man, I'm not going to get a job. A lot of my friends told me to not be a bum and get a job... they all have no idea how hard it was to get into medical school (no idea). Not to mention the fact that I'll have... 12 hour class/sessions everyday for the next 2 years, then 60 hour/week clinical rotations across hospital wards for 2 years, then 80 hour/week shifts through hospitals in residency for 5 years, and THEN start life.

So yeah, work now? For $8 an hour? In my last year to do what I want? ...no

Oh, and thanks for the congrats Seawed! Free health care for you when I'm older!  :fogethappy:

Chemical engineerings not so bad. I hated math and chemistry in highschool too and ironically I got in for the program. First years pretty easy, mostly review of chemical elements, compounds, reactions+rates you learned before. Nomenclature gets drilled into your head too if it wasnt already. The labs are....wouldnt say always fun but can be very interesting at times. The math is basic too until you get to 2nd year. You wont hate is as much as you think you will frisky, well at least I didnt.

ugh i would kill myself if i spent an extended period of time just doing nothing but playing video games and watching television shows.  Like maybe I've become so jaded but those things are so much more boring compared to being in the social world and interacting with people, hanging out with friends, and forging your ways towards something meaningful in your life.

It wasn't hard for me, and only me, to get into... it's hard for ANYONE to get into. Each school gets some 3000-4000 applications for a seat of maybe 70 students. I graduated with a 3.8 gpa, biology major chem. minor, with a 33 on the MCAT... I spent 10 months, poured in $3000 dollars worth of prep material, and studied some 4 hours a day to get that 33 score. I got in easy yes, but getting those stats are tough as hell (considering you need shadowing, years of research, volunteering, leadership, etc. etc. on top of everything to become competitive).

And I love science, and medicine, I can't wait to start this stuff. Interview me and I'll tell you exactly why being a doctor is the one and only career for me. And that's why I put myself through all of this to get there, and am willing to endure the next 9 years to finish it. Love for the art doesn't make them EASY though. Medicine requires critical thinking, which is tough, but it doesn't matter how naturally gifted you are, if you need to study/memorize/understand 2000 pages worth of material per test, it'll be difficult if for nothing else than by shear volume of it all.

Easy with the speculation! Taking 1 year off is a great idea, even my interviewers agreed when THEY asked me what I'm doing between now and when classes start.

You'll be amazed at how much time 24 hours/day really is. Of course I do other stuff than GAMING and TV shows. I have a social life, and no it's not XBOX LIVE. I play guitar and jam with buddies, trying to start up the old band, Laker game parties... call me, and I'll give you a thorough list of my social activities...if you take a year off, you can do everything and still have more time.

Gosh, I didn't want this thread to turn into ANOTHER argument with atari and whoever else is in the usual-douche list.

Assuming I had access to money, I'd love to travel.  Maybe not for the full year, though; probably just a few months out of that.

With the rest of the time, I like to really buckle down and get better at guitar, and do a lot of writing (song and otherwise).

How about you get a job as a nurses assistant or something so you A) develop a worthwhile work ethic because if you're going to med school you're damn sure gonna need it and B) can confirm for yourself thats really what you want to do and understand when you get your med license what its like to change someone's shit pan so you don't turn into one of those dickheads that aren't compassionate or understanding at all of what its like to have to do something like that on a day to day basis. Because if you've never done it yourself then you're gonna be damn quick to forget and slowly turn into an over paid, priviledged piece of shit doctor. Who will most definitely demand more of the people under them without empathy then what they themselves are capable of?

You said you were taking rotations in a hospital? Is that just following doctors around and learning shit or are you actually going to be changing IVS and piss pans or whatever else?

Yeah GETTING INTO med school is hard because its alot of studying or whatever but if you don't apply yourself to the actual physical work and become a part of that and realize what it is and develop a good work ethic you could possibly end up just another dick that thinks because you got through med school you're too good to bust your ass and push the work on your peers because hey you went to school and got a degree, leave the grunt work to the stupid people.

I'm not trying to specifically say that you'd do that but I see it happen all the time by kids that went to college and never had to bust their asses like everyone else so they think they're better then that and don't carry their own weight and end up making terrible leaders, co-workers, and people in general.

just something to think about while you're at home playin' mass effect or whatever the fuck.

i've basically got the year off. i quit uni because i hated my course and i just got accepted into glasgow to do film studies in september. i am pretty much sitting around playing games right now. it's been a while since i've really played alot of games but i am playing a mess of games right now. i am going to australia at the start of april for 5 months, though. there's room for games and actually doing something. games are a blast, but really sitting around all day isn't actually fun.

@Yugoslavian Ghoul: Yeah, I know what you're saying. I've shadowed doctors, but no I haven't done any HANDS on stuff (I did work in a pathology lab where I processed human placentas... blood bath work, but it was fun). Clinical rotations will be 3rd and 4th year of med school, and that's where you actually "train" in various areas and see which YOU like. There, and again in residency, you pretty much get pushed around by everyone - you're at the bottom of the chain even if you have that M.D. at the end of your name. So through that, if you're already a jerk, then you'll develop some respect for the nurses that are teaching you stuff (of course the attending physician teaches you most of the stuff but nurses are a big part). I'm not a jerk in real life, actually a really nice guy (if I come off as a dick in these forums, I'm sure we'd be best of pals in real life  ) so I think I'll be a pretty compassionate person in the field.

Quote
i don't want to be a dick but it's not hard for everyone.
Of course it's not tough for some people, but about 40% of applicants land a seat... which is on the low side. And some of them go to Caribbean schools or D.O. schools.

if i had a year off i would definitely move to another country. i made a lot of friends while i was in ghana and i really like it there, i'd probably to go back there. in fact i might still. ;)

while there i would definitely try to work at an ngo that deals with computers, heard of a few setting up lan cafes for villages, and i would continue traveling around west africa.

Each school gets some 3000-4000 applications for a seat of maybe 70 students.

That's not too bad if you think about it, 4000/70 = 57 people per seat, when I took my university entrance exam the competition was 60 people per seat, I guess it's difficult in your case because you had to go through the trouble of getting good grades your entire life

I currently have 6 months off since I can only start Uni in August/September because of what I chose to study. So far got rejected from one of the 3 universities. However, I need mucho money since I applied to study in another country so right now all I'm doing is working 6-7 days a week, playing 3-4h of drums per day, studying music theory, doing ear training etc.

You're spoiling yourself man.. Keep that up and you just wont be entertained anymore.

I'm going to have to step in and offer how playing games constantly actually helped me not play them much. I use to have a unhealthy addiction to games and spent most of my times on them until I got to a point where I lost the addiction and did other things (like job and life crap). Not saying XxNemesis29xX is an addict, I'm saying I was... but it helped me "get it out of my system" in a sense. Also, it's still possible to do some of the things said here and carry a career, just not as much as it would be if we assumed we had a full year to do anything which obviously is what this is about. Life hits hard and fast, I can understand to some elements as to why he does what he is doing, perhaps because I would do the same on a similar scale. Also you appreciate such hobbies much more once you actually are faced with reality because there is so little time (depending on what you're doing.) to enjoy them, any hobby for that matter.

P.S, I saw you once XxNemesis29xX with your brother, but just stared because I felt it was impossible to actually see someone from the internet on a rare chance from the same state. I'm 80% sure it was you though, this was some years back.

This requires running out of money then saying to yourself "hey I cant pay for this year might as well take it off". I wish I was a trust fund kid, i'd be done college by now...
I said "how can you take a year off out of college" as in, you are out of college... finished with it, and you are no longer in college. kinda like how it was said in the original post(he's done with his undergrad and was accepted into medschool).  can you follow this? :)

Even taking a year off while you're in college. How do you do this? If you've run out of money, you would need to spend time working for or getting money some other way so it wouldn't necessarily be a year off.

I gotta lay off the green ahhh

you're right dc I wasnt even paying attention to the original post. But in my case, I still see it as a year off because during school I would be "busy" all day everyday, I would have like one day where I didnt have homework and no work to do. Weekdays was 12 hours of school a day, then weekends were 8 hours of work per day. Now though, I actually have those days where I have it all to myself. good stuff.

already have enough time for reading at the moment... so if i had the time and money i would finally put some effort into learning an instrument. probably piano, because i've  wanted to, and i also watch a lot of marx bros and simply watching chico play is very fun. it's like the piano's cursed for me, though. in college i met the piano instructor and ate breakfast with him every morning, and he was a nice gent and was emphatic to teach me when i expressed interest. a few weeks later before the semester ended he died of heart problems, not sure what it was, but i guess it doesn't matter at this point. he wasn't that old either. still signed up to learn but nobody wanted to teach me so it went under the carpet. tried again next semester and i guess they had enough students enlisted. fuckin.... voodoo

other than that, not really sure, traveling is the typical response but fuck you a trog if you wouldn't. the only problem is picking where to go first

It was in one of those chain linked store places, you know, where several shops are put together, can't remember what part of Alabama it was. It was so far back though, I was still a teen I think. I was going to make a topic on it but never did...just sorta placed it in the "was that who I think it was" memory lane folder (this was back when GW was at its peek and everyone was working on 2k3). I've played rpg games outside the house, but not sure if I've ever did so in a library.  Oh and, also I didn't know your name and didn't wanna scream NEMESIS outside the window...lol

hah, that'd been pretty funny.

i don't remember if you had money to travel. you should definitely travel if you do. one of my friends moved to chile for a year and had a really great time. that was probably two or three years ago and she's still in contact with her friends there. i was under the impression that it was cheap.

also like i said ghana is a really great place, just about everyone there is friendly and you would make friends really fast. the ghanaian philosophy about strangers is that they could be your best friend, you don't know! everyone i knew was really excited to teach me 'how to be ghanaian'. i'm not sure if this is the kind of 'experience' you want. a lot of the time is superb but sometimes it's closely mixed with terribly heart wrenching situations. given the profession you're going into this might be a good thing. it could expand your professional horizons, maybe you'd decide to be a doctor abroad or something. the plane ticket price is about 2000 USD after taxes (steeeep) but once you get there it's REALLY cheap. one day of large meals is 2-3 USD. clothes are 1 USD or less a piece.

Rand died of heart failure on March 6, 1982 at her home in New York City, and was interred in the Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla, New York. Rand's funeral was attended by some of her prominent followers, including Alan Greenspan. A six-foot floral arrangement in the shape of a dollar sign was placed near her casket.

Took almost a year off when I got let go from my first job (I was 19-20) It was probably the worst experience of my life. I was basically a piece of shit who felt like doing nothing but waste energy trying to entertain myself until I went to sleep. I had no plans to go back to school and lazily looked for jobs, played a good bit of video games, I can't remember all of them but WoW was there for a part of it. I couldn't really stick with one activity/game/movie for long because it would eventually make me sick to my stomach and make me super depressed.  Smoked weed, drank, etc. A real stand up guy.

I was happy when became a package handler for fedex last April even though was a real awful job for me,  and I've found a new job since then. But It was the most exercise I had gotten in years (sadly) and lit a fire on my ass to be a little more active (not gonna do any crazy shit like join the army tho). I actually starting getting sorta on track with my life. I'll be 22 at the end of june and I haven't really done shit else when it comes to goals for the future(!) but some good things have happened, I feel like I've sorta become a better person or at least started to.

Idk why I posted all this but I guess the point is don't be a piece of shit and do this on your parents bill, even if your are waiting for school of something I would at least try to do ANYTHING besides stay at home all day collecting dust. I mean if you like video games and stuff that much to each their own, I would  love to take some time off and chill somewhere really interesting but personally I gotta still sort some crap out before I can do that! A year is kind of long though.

EDIT: But in regards to Nemesis, you are going to med school so fuck all else do whatever the hell you want till school starts, just remember to shed your bad habits when you finally get the ball rollin (and it sounds like you will).

If I had enough money for basic day to day stuff and a bit extra, I'd knuckle down and make a proper album.

I've always wanted to write a book about the Australian Outback as well, just because I come from there but I'm so URBAN.

Would probably smoke a lot of weed and play a lot of videogames but I'd also do one of those two things fo sho.

or go live in Japan or Vietnam or something I dunno

EDIT: For some reason I would love to be an engineer/executive producer/producer/guest artist etc for somebodys album too. I just really like the idea of overseeing projects to the finish and nothing is more satisfying than spending hours mixing a track and having it come out just how you wanted.

I'm gonna have to take a year or a semester off now because I didn't apply (and I doubt I could apply now since it's already almost summer) for the fall semester.  So I'm gonna be taking at least a semester off and I'll be getting a second job after summer (because the job I have now is really busy in the summer (60 hours a week or so) and then dies down during the school season) and pay my mom back most of the money that I owe her.

Right now I'm about in the same situation as Afura and I AM a trust-fund kid. I went slowly through Community college with one or two classes a semester. The way things are gong I'm either going to have 3 semesters of math left -my weakest subject, in which i may have a disability - or possibly be able to substitute my Logic course and get outta there. I have more than enough credits for a degree but not  the right subjects. I'd love to take a year to travel but my parents and i have set the date for my moving out for this July and I  have a lot of skills I need to sharpen,- plus I'd feel much better if I were earning my own money as I"D be in control of of my own finances- I'd prefer to keep my fund as emergency back up. I don't;t intend to be a slave to work, but I have to stand on my own two feet.. I need more structure right now and a job would be good for that as well as earning my own money- trust me, I worked before college too and I felt proud knowing that I had earned the money myself- it's kind of like when you've made something and can say "this is the work of my hands."
