You can watch replays in the game engine without being in the beta. Just search isohunt.com for "Starcraft 2" and download the first two results. The first one is the beta installer, and the second one includes the battle.net cache and maps required to view replays. There are a few places online uploading SC2 replays for you to download and watch, I found a few good ones here (http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=112991), especially the 2v2 ones near the bottom.

A crack was just released over at darkblizz that lets you play against the the AI, but from what I've seen it's only 2 maps with random armies and super easy AI.
Edit so looking at the darkblizz wiki they've released a map pack and harder ai (at least to me I'm not that good at starcraft) still random races though, but I'll take what I can get.
Pretty much the same old starcraft with a couple new units thrown in, plays just like the original with a lot more polish and pretty graphics/music. I knew they weren't going to change much which is a good/bad thing but the things they did improve on they didn't seem to miss a beat. This is just the multiplayer though and while it's a huge thing for most people I'm still pretty excited for the campaign and map editor, the latter probably going to be a majority of the replay value (dota heh).

Yeah there is now a crack that allows you to play against the AI, offline. This is awesome... I want to play the full game so bad. They might as well make the game open beta at this point.
Actually, I had the opportunity to play on someone else's account for about 6 hours online (pre patch) the other day. It was glorious. They did a perfect job of continuing the original Starcraft atmosphere and style, while updating everything you can think of. The graphics are awesome. The AI is so much better (especially pathfinding, worker AI, move-attack... everything.) The new units mesh perfectly. And playing online, you run into a lot of the old strategies plus completely new ones.
Anyway, if you want to play against the AI, go to this page (http://www.gamingnewslink.com/2010/02/28/tutorial-play-starcraft-2-beta-crack-with-ai-starcraft-2-beta-ai-maps/) and follow the instructions. You can play on any map available in the beta, with 2 or 4 players, with any AI difficulty level (although even Hard is ridiculously easy, I'm going to try Insane next.) Unfortunately you cannot choose your race, it is random, but I'm just happy to be playiiiing.
Edit: Turns out if you hit F10 during the game and click "Restart" it chooses a new race for you, so that's the best way of quickly rerolling for a new race.

I've only watched a few short videos of people playing the beta, and I really enjoyed listening to the new Terran music. Does it remind anyone else of Firefly?

Pretty much everyone.

How exactly does the gameplay feel? Like Warcraft III? I personally didn't really like the tempo and style of WC3 that much. Starcraft feels so much more fast-paced and more direct. Would I like this game?
Is it similar to WC3 in the sense that gameplay has shifted towards micro rather than macro?
-
it plays pretty much like SC1 except with more unit options.
-
im in it who gonna play with me im scared of korea

this is what i like about starcraft! you don't have to waste your time worrying about too much bullshit. it's good to hear that the core gameplay remains unchanged.

i just got back from GDC the other and while there i heard a blizzard employee talking about the map editor and apparently they are expanding it a lot, supposedly you can make any kinda game with it(guy even mention that they already have an FPS that was created with it).

blizzard sux

reported.

Is starcraft 2 going to be harder than starcraft 1 because that one was really hard
-
i always used to get my butt kicked online on the first starcraft. probably going to be more of the same on the new one.
-
Is starcraft 2 going to be harder than starcraft 1 because that one was really hard
it probably is. these games usually have a similar learning curve, and it's always going to be an uphill battle to try and beat any online opponent.
-
But I died on the second level
If starcraft 2 is hard too then maybe I don't want to play it
-
the second level? you mean the one where there isn't actually an enemy base?
-
Well then I dont know when the hell then it happened 10 years ago

Isn't that the one with the infested command center at the end? Like where the zerg actually don't produce any new units?
Like, maybe you are just really dumb because unless you produce no additional units, there is pretty much zero chance of being killed on this mission. Well, then again, I underestimate some people's ability to be overlook the obvious and just do stupid things. Maybe you sent raynor out alone and died because you aren't allowed to get him killed in the missions.
-
I heard there's some kind of friend invites, if so I'd love to get in on this if anyone was willing to send one my way.

here, view these videos and then try again: http://speeddemosarchive.com/Starcraft.html

Thanks I will

WHOA late to respond, but, yeah it's pretty similar to SC1, only with much better graphics, AI, and unit control. Stuff like selecting multiple buildings, selecting unlimited units, separate rally points for workers and non-workers, etc. are implemented. It is MUCH MUCH different than WC3, a definite return to SC1-style fast paced combat and extreme micro. Oh yeah, and no hero units obviously.
The campaign editor looks to be extremely powerful this time around, able to modify virtually every aspect of gameplay, right down to the game engine, using either traditional triggers/events, or the proprietary SC2 campaign editor script. There will be support for hero units and inventory items, so DOTA style maps are absolutely possible. There is a video floating around youtube somewhere that showcases FPS, SHMUP, and RPG style maps, all made within the SC2 editor. Pretty rad.

That sounds pretty good, guess I'll need to give it a try when it comes out then!

Actually I'm in the beta right now, if you want to give it a whirl there is a way to let people play on your account without giving them the full info required to steal it from you.
-
Thanks for the offer but I heard that there's only a PC beta going on right now, and I'm on a Mac :(
-
they sent out friend inviteS!!!
-
Can I get one :X
-
I would like one as well
I'm on a mac as well, but I'd partition (bootcamp) and install XP back on my computer just to play this.
-
I am arm wrestling a friend of a friend to get an invite later.
-
Ok I think it wasn't the second one but none of it looks familiar

You must have been playing the expansion, Brood War, then. Its videos are here http://speeddemosarchive.com/StarcraftBroodWar.html

Whelp, turns out that I'm almost as bad at SC2 as I am at SC1. My win ratio is just barely over 1.0, and although I'm #1 in my bronze division, that's mainly because I started out with like 800 bonus points. Maybe I should stop playing random and stick to a race so I can get good with it...
...Nah, too boring. Guess I'll be a scrub4life.
-
I can't wait until I actually have the time to delve into this. Why can't two weeks from now come faster?
