My XFX 8600GT idles at 71 C and goes all the way to 106 C on load and crashes.
I have the stock cooler on it, and a PCI slot exhaust fan next to it, plus a 80mm intake fan next to it. There is one other exhaust fan (120mm) on the back of the case. How can I get the temperature down?
Also, I might just replace the whole case and card, so any recommendations for a cheap computer case ($50 or less) and a budget video card ($120 or less) are appreciated.

may want to replace the thermal paste and make sure the heat sinks are seated tightly, if they're not the fan set up could be acting more as a METAL HEAT PRISON

Don't XFX have a lifetime guarantee?

^ had to register your card within 30 days of buying it. Pff.

i'm not sure if i'ts been fixed but nvidias drivers have had problems with cuasing Graphics cards to over heat, basicly the temp stuff is broken, not sure if they fixed it or not.

Its been fixed. When was the last time you updated your drivers?
-
Hey I'll take your 8600 if you don't want it anymore :D
I'll pay for you to ship it to me.
-
updated? HAH i had to downdate becuase the ones they recomened to use made ALL of my 3D apps slow down, when i whent back it was all working as it should.
-
Well I changed the thermal paste. It lowered the temperature slightly (it now idles at 67 C), but not nearly enough. Drivers are also updated to the latest ones.
I should mention that the fan is always on 100% (I used RivaTuner to adjust it). Otherwise the temperature would be much higher.

You could replace that card for the price of 1 xbox game.

Some of us like to mend things. Mend and make do. That was the way during the war, now look at us. This current generation, just throwing things away. Let me tell you boy, come another war like that you'll be as disposable to your government as those plastic razors and graphics cards are to you.

I agree with big ass skelly... shame not even a quarter of American's see the effects of their wasteful lifestyles.
But as stated before... I'll take it :3

I'm building a new media center PC with that 8600GT for my family and buying one of the following for my own PC:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150323&cm_re=9800gt-_-14-150-323-_-Product
XFX PVT98GYDLH GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card $105
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102864
SAPPHIRE 100283-2L Radeon HD 5770 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card $160
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150439
XFX GS250XZDFU GeForce GTS 250 1GB 256-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card $145
Which card do you think will get me the most bang for my buck?
I'm leaning towards the 5770 because of directx 11 support, which would hopefully mean that I don't have to update my video card in the next 4 or so years; but I'm not too knowledgeable in this field so I would like the input of others.
-
i have the 5770 and it rocks
-
Clearly the 5770 it's the only DX11 card.
-
Just because a card supports DX11 does not mean it enables you to play games in DX11. The first generation cards usually won't have enough power to actually take full advantage of DX11.
-
i'm pretty sure a card that supports dx 11 will let you play more dx 11 games than a card that doesn't support dx11
-
Sure, if you like gaming at 720p resolution and 10 frames per second.

Maybe when I get done my build I might get myself a batter card like 5870.... not because it has DirectX 11 support but for the 2 GB of mem. but for now I will stick with my XFX HD-489X-ZSFC Radeon HD 4890. till I get done my build then I will upgrade the rest.
And on a Sad note the only leg up I can see the 4890 over the 5770 is the mem interface. 4770 has 256bit and 5770 has 128bit Also on a side note for the 5770 it doesn't show how effective Memory Clock is or it's Core Clock so I'm in the dark with those Specs. But I think I made the right chooses with the budget I had and the 4890 seems better over the 5770 other then it's a power hog. Till I upgrade the thing it cost me about around 1500$ including the OS I still need to get to make this build Also need to find my old computer up in the attic to rip out the CD drive for a bit till I get a Blu-ray RW (witch is not included to my subtotal but this is on the last of my list.) and my A drive.(and the A drive is there to stay since there really isn't much use for one but sometimes it dose come in handy besides it can't hurt) Also i got a 1250W PSU I know it's over kill but I plan to get a few hard drives get a raid going since I know I can fill a TB easily since I have the habit of not deleting anything... I'm like a pack rat. :welp:
Edit: And no I don't got money I'm just slowly investing in to it after the build so nothing instantaneous since I have no Tax money left I've been footing the rest to get it done. sadly. :(

The first part he is right and I think the second part it was sarcasm/joke.
This being the first part.

i dont and never will understand what you say dday
-
Have you tried cleaning the fan and intake areas themselves? Depending on what you're using you made need to detach the fans/plates/heatsinks just to get a better idea of what's going on but yeah.... the only time I've seen those numbers are when the air was blocked by dust entirely.

What he means is that, historically speaking, the first gen of any new DX iteration are barely powerful enough to push the features they tout. Look at the 8800GTS 320MB, for example. It was released around a $310 price point. The card dominated DX9 games, but when DX10 games started coming out the card couldn't push decent frame rates at all. The GTX 260 is a much more capable DX10 card and will give much better frame rates at higher resolutions.
The 5770 is similar in that it runs current games pretty well... but we haven't really seen anything as far as DX11 goes yet. Once DX11 games start hitting the market, we'll find the 5770 just can't deliver the frame rates at the resolution we'll want.
-
how distressing
-
Just get the fucking 5770, my dad owns one it's amazing and it is cheap.
-
nah ed they have a point im gonna go break mine in half and buy a slightly cheaper card and then buy a new one next year when it matters
-
Will a direct X 11 card give me the brightest pixels? I want crisp polygons. I want bump maps, normal maps, UV maps and paralax maps so which card has the best cartographer.
-
Well I went ahead and got the 5700. It's amazing for the price.
So far, the max temperature after an hour of gaming was 69C. It can play Just Cause 2 and Dragon Age Origins easily at the highest settings.
And this time I registered it with XFX.
