Everyone has probably heard about this already, but basically Comedy Central recently censored an episode of South Park depicting Mohammed in a bear suit after some obscure blog aimed what were essentially death threats at Trey Parker and Matt Stone.
Jon Stewart's 10 Minute Rant (http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-april-22-2010/south-park-death-threats)
Everybody Draw Mohammed Day (http://www.mynorthwest.com/?nid=11&sid=313170)
A Seattle cartoonist has now proposed we make May 20th 'Everybody Draw Mohammed Day' which is sponsored by CACAH - Citizens Against Citizens Against Humor.
So, GW, here's your topic to discuss this and get a head start on drawing your Mohammeds. I'll upload mine later, probably.
-
jon stewart, matt stone and trey parker are a bunch of twerps. fuck them all, their shit is so worn-out and lame. jon stewart said that fox news etc are decent human beings and 'worthy adversaries' in that clip while groups like revolution muslim are 'the enemy'. he can go eat a pile of shit, puking flags like that.
they're all trashbags. every person involved in this thing is a trashbag.
-
4chan did this already
and spammed a muslim facebook account with them
well I mean like obscene pictures of Mohammed
it was like the only time I ever went on 4chan ok
-
yeah this is stupid and you can't fight ignorance and hatred with more ignorance and hatred all it does is cause more ignorance and hatred
also why does anyone really care and why would anyone need worry over some zealot jackasses those people threaten to kill people every day.
-
thats ballsy man lol. shittaaber, you might even get murdere like this dood! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theo_van_Gogh_%28film_director%29
-
man i am all for free speech but why does anyone have to be such a dick to be drawing mohammed anyway????
yes you should be free to do so but the only REASON to do it is to be a dick about the fact that they don't want you to
honestly what does drawing mohammed prove???? what GRAND STATEMENT are you making by doing it? you're just being a dick for the sake of being a dick. sure, sending death threats makes you a dick too, but you KNOW that's what's going to happen, so why keep doing it? what point did south park make by showing this? that HEY GUYS THOSE PEOPLE WHO WERE UP IN ARMS OVER THAT DANISH CARTOONIST FUCKING YEARS AGO? YEAH THEY STILL FEEL THE SAME WAY. JUST CHECKING IN. keeping it topical there, south park.
i don't get why this is a big freedom of speech thing anywa. nothing is stopping anyone from drawing mohammed, this is being proven over and over again. the government's not been going "hey you'd better not!", there's nothing to be protesting here except that these dudes are provoking a group of people who have behaved this way in the past over the exact same thing and it's just gonna keep happening :/
tl;dr this whole thing is dumb and you should be ashamed of yourself for getting into this. nobody's free speech is being limited here, the only thing going on is that sometimes you are responsible for what you say/do/DRAW and if someone sees that as FIGHTING WORDS and you know it's gonna happen then that's something you have to consider when you choose to do this. nothing is stopping me from going into a room full of violent thugs and shouting "YEAH WELL FUCK YOU ALL, YOU GUYS ARE DOUCHES.", but i know what's going to happen if i do this so why would i bother when i'm proving nothing by doing so
-
i tried to do this but then i just drew a penis and hung it over my bed.
-
topic is now "everybody draw a penis"
i had a good one on pubaccess but it is down still so send in you dick pix

4chan did this already
and spammed a muslim facebook account with them
well I mean like obscene pictures of Mohammed
it was like the only time I ever went on 4chan ok
man i didn't see this the first time i looked at this topic but this is honestly a really 4chan thing to do so idk how nobody would be fuckin embarrassed to do it
-
Haha! I should be ashamed of myself? Really?
I don't really watch South Park and don't even know what point there was, if any, in portraying Mohammed in a bear suit. Not the point anyway. The point is that the threats alone prompted the network to censor the clip when there were otherwise no plans whatsoever to do so. Now I don't know if this qualifies as your GRANDE ASSERTION or whatever the fuck it was you were going on about, but are you saying you basically agree that mainstream media should be censored to quell the disgruntled whimperings of an extremist minority?
-
Also hi there this topic is not about penises now simply because you're an idiot.
-
you know that thing you think is real important? i don't think it's important, i'll show you how unimportant i think it is *shits in an urn*
I JUST WANT TO UTILISE MY RIGHT TO BE A DICKHEAD

hey enough of that, vellfire isn't an idiot.

if we are to be assassinated, we will do so while fighting the very organization that has sworn to protect us!
-
Its not very polite to depict the prophet Mohammed.
I have no idea what comedy central is up to because I don't have cable but they shouldn't be dickheads about things like this, I mean its really not funny and they're basically a bunch of privileged white people in a primarily Christian and secular society poking fun at a minority group's religion.
Great job firstworld white people were really so much more civilized than those mud people
*farts a bomb on a Pakistani wedding via a unmanned drone*

velfare paragraph was a lot longer than it needed to be. if you really think there is some vindication in the portrayal of mohammed you have a bit of growing up to do let's talk again after south park get's cancelled later this year.

you don't understand anything. Velfarre's and Dietcoke's posts did a pretty good job summing this up so if you still insist on defending two idiot shits and a bloated, sensationalist cartoon then yeah be my guess.
-
Bonzi, Vellfarre completely missed the fucking point. I don't understand how this equates to 'a pretty good job of summing this up'.
I'm not defending South Park or its creators, either, by the way. I think it's just dumb that the FCC censored it because some silly blog with 20 members posted a pic of their mansion they probably found via Google image search.
I'm pretty sure a lot of you read the poster's name before actually truly considering whatever the fuck it is they happen to be saying. What does it look like in your head? VELLFIRE - DANISH CARTOONIST FUCKING YEARS AGO
...I AGREE.
-
I'm pretty sure a lot of you read the poster's name before actually truly considering whatever the fuck it is they happen to be saying.
hahahaha
Besides the points already made, I'm also annoyed by the nationalistic bs and stewart and the cartoonist keep attaching this. john stewart actually uses 9/11 sensationalism in that video, you know, the kinda thing he gets viewership for mocking. Not depicting Muhammad is unamerican folks
-
So basically only Bled and I have seen this week's episode of South Park and the rest of you are blowing hot air and have no idea what you're talking about.
-
jon stewart's segment on this was stupid, and I hate South Park with a passion. it's actually pretty surprising that this (http://www.boingboing.net/2010/04/23/sprm.jpg) is enough to warrant another massive crackdown on muslims. or am I the only one who thinks that blog post is incredibly benign?

ps here's my mohammed

goddammit! ANOTHER penis
-
the fcc also censors tittes and swearing so why the fuck do you care that they're censoring an image of mohammed? they censor the other things because it's OFFENSIVE and they've deemed it inappropriate, maybe drawing mohammed is ALSO offensive to quite a few people???? (even if they aren't the DEATH THREAT group uh the rest of the muslims are still gonna be offended at you shitting on their religion!)
this is the absolute dumbest thing to be up in arms about if you're taking the "OH NO THE FCC" angle when we can show blood and gore on tv but not a single tit, who the fuck cares if south park is allowed to make a horrible joke or not when there are films out there that are actually FINE ART that can't be shown on tv unedited because of a goddamn mammary?
i'm glad that you seem to think i'm some person who people follow around and agree with 24/7, but i think what it really boils down to is the fact that you made this topic hoping everyone would bandwagon and draw their li'l mspaint mohammeds as if that was saving their freedoms and instead there was an actual discussion on why maybe nobody should do this
if we are protesting the fcc then this definitely SHOULD be the draw a dick topic, those aren't allowed on tv!
-
So basically only Bled and I have seen this week's episode of South Park and the rest of you are blowing hot air and have no idea what you're talking about.
that's EXACTLY right. that's some summary when i see one, goddamn beautiful work. every little comment small and big taken into consideration, not even a nick of detail left unnoticed. excelent deduction skills, thank you ed! bzsbrzstzstrbsbttr

Both episodes were fairly entertaining and I enjoyed them. But, it would seem to me that there are two separate issues here and they are being freely conflated with one another.
The first is the issue of the depiction of Muhammad. I do not think that this is the core one. The backlash against the Danish cartoonist a few years ago is commonly referenced, but there is a wide disparity between these two events. Westergaard was essentially picking on a fairly weak minority just to prove he could. In other words, while it is rather impolite to depict Muhammad I think the real issue was the rather unprovoked attack on an almost defenseless minority group that is commonly mistreated. In the case of South Park, things are a bit different. The South Park guys were rather reverential when it comes to Muhmmad, in fact they made a point of it. It was fairly clear that they were attacking Viacom and other television companies, not Muslims. So the response was fairly weak from Muslims, but strong from Viacom.
So, I think the more important issue is how Comedy Central handled it and then how the media presented the issue. In my view, Comedy Central’s reaction was almost a back handed attack on, not only the South Park guys, but the greater Muslim community. It stokes fears that Muslims are gaining political influence through terror, rather than the traditional routes, which are of course mostly blocked to them. Furthermore as the media searched for a radical group that was upset, they found one and turned a tiny web based group (that did not even make a real threat) and turned them into a representation of the extremist Muslim community (which in and of itself was a caricature) and in some cases the greater Muslim community. This isn’t a good sign.
-
I saw the eps, they weren't funny. That's a shame because the few before them were actually pretty decent I think, I watched em because of Total Boredom and I thought wow is south park actually ok now? Nope. These eps were their 200th episode thing so it was all just unfunny self references (and making fun of themselves making self references which I don't get). They knew they were going to piss of radicals who blow things up so why freakin bottle out after some totally predictable death threats. Trey and Matt are what salman rushdie calls his balls.

I do enjoy South Park. If you don't, whatever it's your opinion.
I saw the episode and it was pretty clear they were at least trying to stir shit up, because that's what they do.
I do find this whole thing completley blown out of proportion though, and it basically just proves that extremist groups get pissed off at virtually everything (which we already knew) and that people like to do what they're told not to do (which we also already knew.)
-
I will follow mass media blindly to the great Emmys in the sky. John Stewart bless south park

I understand the drive behind the "hey, lets draw Muhammad" push. It is just petulant "oh, yeah?!" at its best, which is fine with me, in fact there have been times when that has been my sole governing philosophy. To that end, despite the fact that I've made a point of never watching a single episode of South Park, I think I have a little cartoon in mind -
(https://legacy.gamingw.net/etc/i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc149/thekillerwolf/mocartoon.webp)
-
Okay, reiterating some points.
Firstly, again, I have not watched television IN GENERAL in over a year. No news, no sports events, no paid programming, and not a single fucking episode of South Park. I actually happen to agree with you OH SOUTPARK? THATS SO 90s!! people, as from what I've heard it's not really that funny anymore and, you know, I'm not 16 years old. Not the point.
I also linked to Jon Stewart's little rant not because The Daily Show is the sole exception to my personal TV rule, but because aside from the 911 bullshit he actually made a couple of valid points. From what I've seen in the past many of you guys used to prop him up as some sort of liberal media icon just like everyone else, so whatever. MY BAD GUYS I didn't know all of a sudden you guys realized he's just another stupid personality.
If for once GW isn't going to bandwagon the shit out of some vague idea, or bandwagon SOME OTHER idea in place of the original because that's what groups of disillusioned 20-somethings do nowadays then okay! I'm game.
The only point even approaching relevance to the original discussion I've seen is Vellfire's OH YOU ARE MAD ABOUT MOHAMMED WHY HAVE YOU NOT CAMPAIGNED FOR BOOBS FOR THE LAST SIX YEARS HUH. And you know what? I think I've actually realized that I'm a much bigger fan of boobs than Mohammed.
So what now? Draw Mohammed with boobs? Draw penises with boobs? Complain about the fact you were asked to draw something for a stupid cause and deliver some poorly inspired diatribe about it? Have at it, kids.
-
What?
-
I like how because a group of people disagree with bled he gets all offensive and thinks that maybe they are ganging up on him or something. This has happened more than once and I do not think that it has anything to do with bandwagoning, you just think differently than a small majority of members that decided to post in this topic because they think this whole ordeal is stupid.
also I feel for you bled, I used to like the daily show alot too but then I quit watching it and I could see how the show could have turned off keel seeing as how its gotten so popular recently. South park is ok sometimes but its just a dumb comedy cartoon and I take it with a grain of salt because its often pretty stupid but its also supposed to be.
also lol at velfarre's steel posting
-
also whats with this stupid bandwagoning shit
everyone here has been here long enough and grown up enough (I think?) to be confident in their own opinions and ideals and need not follow others in attempt to come off as intelligent. People here disagree and agree all the time and to get offensive over a childish argument and call out anyone else (yes even a group of people that seem to agree with one another against your idea) as bandwagoning is fucking retarded.
-
also lol at velfarre's steel posting
i'm not 100% sure what you mean by this but i can only take it as a compliment
-
it is
just see that aggressiveness, I guess we all do it a little bit though.

im sorry youre precious freeedoms of speeches got offended

holy shit South Park WAS 90's
how the fuck did that happen it's been on for 14 years?
It was the point of that episode. Their 2-part 200th episode special was nothing but a bunch of stupid throwbacks. (I feel bad about having watched it given how many people claim they haven't watched a single episode, but when they did it last time I felt the manitee analogy was much more apt to the actual situation at hand. Vellfire should watch at least that one because it spells out rather elegantly what results from the idea that you can draw/show/piss off anyone you want anytime you want just because you are producing fictional material.)
If I took any of the death threats about rendering Mohammed's image seriously, It would only make me all that more inclined to draw him. I'm not even a real artist, but dieing famously on my own convictions regardless of how other parties decide to enact their authority over me is probably the only worthwhile thing I could ever hope to accomplish before my death.
I don't have time to draw him now either way though. I don't care what month South Park puts it's topical flavor, I'll draw whoever I want doing whatever I want on my own time.

They'd be killing you over their religious beliefs. You'd be dying because some TV show got in trouble over doing it and you thought you'd do it too for no reason other than some website telling you to do it. Why does that sound worthwhile?
-

I'm talking about this in a relative sense. Exactly what you describe would only sound worthwhile when directly compared to anything else I already have, or could ever imagine myself even possibly doing with the rest of my life.
I don't care what that says about me, I am being genuinely honest here. If you can think of anything better to do with a life, then I am all but ready to hear it. But if it involves something anything more worthwhile or capable of making a real difference than that, odds are I am probably going to be too lazy to go through with it anyhow.
(Also, I wouldn't be doing it just because some website told me to do it. I would be doing it because some website told me that if I did it, I would be killed for doing it. There's a critical distinction there I have to point out in order to set the record straight, and the only reason I currently find the act pointless is because I don't seriously think I would actually die over it.)

does it really irk you guys that much that comedy central was being culturally sensitive?
i'm sure some muslims would have found it funny but do you really need to see mohammad in a bunny suit on southpark?
is that your biggest problem? really??

bear suit, not bunny

because this is what southpark is all about.

South Park gears more towards shock humor than actually being funny, and what's better than pissing off an already volatile group

because this is what southpark is all about.
yeah, it's about being unfunny douchebags. the question is why people feel the need to rally behind this.

Yeah, seriously. Everybody gets in arm because the FCC censors a bit of a southpark episode. Hell, I don't think that showing Mohammad in a bear suit was an "important plot point" in an overly developed "narrative arc". It's fucking South Park.
Choose your fucking fight people. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, another one of those crazy extremist, became president of Iran in 2004 and established an even tighter censorship that literally killed the cinema industry there, taking away the good (by Iran's standards I guess) range of creative liberty it has been enjoying for the last 20-something years. That's what we should be pissed about, not your precious Mohammad in a bear suit.
-
I only feel bad about those muslims who really want nothing to do with beheading those who insult islam, I don't think they deserve people mocking their cultures like that. They get caught in the crossfire anyway......
-
Yes, let's forget about an issue that is relevant in our society and worry more about something in another country none of us can change. At least with something like censorship you have a remote chance to band together with a group of other dissident voices and possibly inspire some degree of change. What exactly are your plans for ridding the world of Ahmadinejad, SK?
Also stop whining about South Park or Mohammed. I thought it was pretty clear from the beginning that this is more about censorship and essentially using the whole idea as a means to say HI FUCK YOU FCC/NETWORK EXECS. It doesn't fucking matter how any of you feel about those poor Muslims and us stupid fat Americans ridiculing their faith. I mean, if that's your opinion then whatever, but the essential argument here is about not allowing any organization or entity actively censor any form of media solely because it's stepping on the toes of some overly sensitive religious group.
-
In which case like I said before it's kinda late to START whining about censorship, especially over a nonissue like this when the FCC allows violence but not a nipple.
-
People have been whining about censorship since it was invented
-
yeah
lets just draw alot of genetalia and email it to the FCC and tell them we want to see coochies dicks and titties on the tv because its my god given right as an american to see them thangs because them make me feel good

So I really like South Park. And the only problem I have with the censorship of the episode was what no one has mentioned yet. Comedy Central (who keeps saying it was the FCC censoring this that's not true at all) censored out Kyle's entire customary "I learned something today" speech. So it was like, 40 seconds straight of "BLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP". And then Jesus says, "You know what, you're right" and then he says another 20 seconds of dialogue that is replaced with "BLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP" and then Santa also chimes in with another 30 seconds of "BLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP". I thought that was pretty lame of Comedy Central to do, tbh.
-

Oh yeah? When exactly was the deadline?

I think everyone here can agree that censorship should be outright banned, and nobody should ever be allowed to say anything that supports any form of censorship ever again.
(See what I did there?)

I don't have a plan, I was merely stating a fact that is has more value to be pissed about on a somewhat cultural and international level.
I also fail to see how drawing a bunch of mspaint Mohammed will make the FCC go "WELL SHIT MAYBE WE SHOULDN'T CENSOR ANYMORE" or even affect them in any way. They are not the ones who are gonna be affected by a bunch of people on the internet drawing Mohammed with dicks and tits, the Muslims, be it extremists or not, will. Seriously, those extremists are dicks for saying "HEY WE GONNA BLOW YOUR HOUSE", and the FCC are dicks for censoring something be it stupid or not. But please tell me how trying to be bigger dicks will somehow stick it up to the evil network execs in their suits and ties.
Not "plan of the year" material if you ask me.
-
that sounds like a joke but so does this so
Yea, are we sure this wasn't a joke? Usually they don't finish with 3 monologues so I thought it was a heavy handed "Thanks fascists, now we have to censor the good/peaceful stuff too" "heh"--but I couldn't be sure
-
Matt and Trey themselves said that part wasn't meant to be censored. Comedy Central censored out that entire speech even though it wasn't about Mohammed at all.
-
i wish comedy central censored all their garbage and just played a test panel constantly. i miss test panels, i haven't seen one in ages
-
Being pissed has absolutely no value at all unless you plan to fucking do something about it. Will a bunch of mspaints of Mohammed with boobies change anything? Who knows. This whole 'Everybody Draw Mohammed Day' idea actually got a bit of publicity so maybe it'll actually have some influence. As far as this community goes it was just a stupid idea that I thought might pass some slow hours at work. Instead I get a bunch of smug, pissy kids who want to bitch about South Park or the FCC because it apparently isn't avant-garde to care about something relevant unless the vehicle for expressing your distaste is adequate.
Don't draw Mohammed with tits, GW. See if I care.
-
In which case like I said before it's kinda late to START whining about censorship, especially over a nonissue like this when the FCC allows violence but not a nipple.
I think its more likely that they'd ignore any requests to have uncensored nipples then requests to have Mohammad uncensored. Then again I'll admit I've never been quite clear on why any Islamic people get offended at all because of it. is it literally part of the religion? something that just sort of popped up?
I think everyone here can agree that censorship should be outright banned, and nobody should ever be allowed to say anything that supports any form of censorship ever again.
(See what I did there?)
I actually hate censorship in any form so I'd actually be in favor of an out right 'ban' on censoring things. I've already thought of this issue you bring up and realize its just a stupid technicality.
The Mohammad thing is merely more immediately relevant then the issues of censorship in Iran. Admittedly due to South Park bringing it back up.
On the topic of liking/disliking South Park I've watched every episode (I do this with almost everything I watch, but that's a different personal topic that's sort of irrelevant). It always been hit or miss for me. Some episodes can be pretty funny, others are just 'entertaining' but not funny, and a few are kind of eye-rolling-ly/face-palming-ly bad.
Personally I see no problem in them bringing this topic up. If you thought it was unimportant to discuss this or related issues you would not be posting in this topic would you?.

What? It's definitely important to discuss. It's not the issue that's unimportant it's the "everybody draw mohammed" part of it that's dumb.
Why do people think that speaking against the OP doesn't count as discussion? I see this a lot, somebody disagrees with the first post and then someone goes WELL APPARENTLY THIS *IS* WORTHY OF DISCUSSION IF YOU'RE POSTING, arguing against it is still discussion :/

That's why Mohammed is the best prophet. Anyone and their sister can draw Jesus and nobody has anything to say against it. People talk about Mohammed more because arguing against showing his image naturally leads to more discussion on his behalf.
Either way, the Muslims still win, and if I was actually a faithful Christian, it would piss me off to no end.

If you fucking monks wouldn't live in your pretend-relativism and bandwagon me since the beginning of the topic, you would admit that you actually think as i do. If you actually had read the OP you'd realize that South Park and KFC has NOTHING to do with the topic. Somebody just had to say it out loud. SOMEBODY should do something about this and what are you going to do about it? Exactly. I'm going to do whatever i can to stop this bullshit.
Drop in a well and die GW. IN A WELL. I mean it. Over and out midgits. Over and out. Ad sinciritum et all.
