Are 3D fighters with 2D gameplay about to become a new trend or something?
So two Mortal Kombat topics this week, I don't know what's up with that.
Anyway, looks like they're trying to make Mortal Kombat good again. Obviously they've been trying that all along, but they're going back to their roots this time with 2D gameplay. Perhaps they realized that MK's best days were also its early days?
I feel kind of conflicted. I have fond memories of the old MK games, but as a whole, the series has really rubbish gameplay and all of the characters control like drunks with zero reflexes.
They're trying to be somewhat new by throwing in a tag team feature. I guess they're trying to take what Marvel vs Capcom, Street Fighter, and Tekken all did best and then rolling it up in a Mortal Kombat wrapper.
Also the idea of Kung Lao's hat cutting through another guy's balls makes me feel very, very weak. I suspect that they're aiming for shock value over gore in this game?
Anyway yeah, that's that. So far the female characters don't look like transvestites and the gameplay doesn't look sluggish and awful (yet) so I guess there's a tiny bit of hope.

Growing up I've always had fond memories of MK too, but I never really knew why. I think I always liked the idea of MK, and I liked watching other people (i.e. my older brother) play MK, but I never REALLY liked playing it myself. Idk, it was just never that fun to me. Street Fighter on the other hand I loved playing.
But, if they're trying to revamp it, I might just try it out. The only MK's I've played are 2 and 3 anyway, so it's been a long time. Shock value vs gore doesn't really matter to me because the fatalities in these games always both disgusted and fascinated me (I guess like watching a train wreck?!?! I just can't look away...) so I don't see this being much different.

Whoa that trailer actually makes it look good. I wanna play that shit.

I think it's just because MK's one of those insane ideas that had to have come out during a specific period of the 90's or it never would've happened like a bunch of stuff from the 80's who would just suddenly /think/ of 80's stuff now
I almost honestly mean this you can't think in an authentically 80's way nobody is that weird
I do miss some stuff about the 90's that I thought was soo corny at the time like whoa remember when aliens were cool and Fox had the special that was people cutting up aliens at Area 51 and also when animals attack?? I mean I think that's hilarious and so insane like nobody gives a shit about alien UFO shit like 8 years later unless you're some weirdo who actually wholeheartedly believes in it. I mean like does anybody follow what SETI's been up to recently like healthy level of interest in a subject even though there aren't TV shows about it anymore to keep interest
please somebody know what I'm trying to get at

"Maybe this one won't suck." - Me, before the release of every Mortal Kombat game ever.

I blame most of my problems on the fact that I still sometimes think in a 90s way and then I realize how batshit insane it is.

keep in mind my idea of 90's is like, I can't remember the early 90's well enough so 90's to me is like, off the top of my head, it's like aliens were still cool/interesting skateboarding was still cool skateboards with aliens painted on them were like ultra cool people used the word 'ultra' playstation was fucking mindblowing people still got excited over graphics (which I still kind of agree on that was like the last real paradigm shift in games) microsoft was evil instead of apple people still got excited over the simpsons people still got excited over the internet nobody had the internet only that one guy in your neighborhood had anything cool like playstation or internet people still got shocked over violence in videogames people still got shocked in general people still got excited about dinosaurs/archeology this + the alien thing is probably spielberg's fault people still cared about spielberg people still got excited over special effects (I mean to the point where you could just show some image no matter how crappy and as long as it was done on computor people would crap their pants) lots of things were 'extreme' the game Wipeout was somehow marketable (probably because it's so extreme) things were still mind-numbing (reality shows I've heard something or other like 'trashy' 'bad television' 'ruining television' but I don't think anybody really mentions the mind-numbing aspect anymore(or just flat-out say 'retarded')) Lara Croft was supposed to be hot you could have ridiculous characters like Lara Croft and be like a feminist because it wasn't a cliche yet to have a woman who kicks ass or something. Also Buffy the Vampire Slayer same idea the guy who produced Buffy the Vampire Slayer was still relevant 90210 90210 knock-offs hip-hop was still like whatever it hadn't become pop music yet people still went to raves nobody had cell phones Clinton lol sorry I ran out of steam
big head modes dancing baby Ally McBeal people still talked about anorexia
Edit: some of the 90's stuff I paid attention to is skewed because of my brother tbh
Edit: My view of the 90's is probably pretty DARK actually because suddenly games were no longer just Nintendo suddenly all these new companies were on the scene and Mortal Kombat and then post-Mortal Kombat world everything seemed like it had to be dark and gritty and have people blowing up for no reason and Lara Croft etc. rumors about nude codes etc. and Mortal Kombat had a bunch of rumors hidden fatalities and stuff probably nude codes too (I went to a Catholic school lol)
um also I'm pasting this article because it sums up a lot of thoughts of mine
http://www.gamesradar.com/ds/f/ugly-polygon-babes-of-yesteryear/a-2009070995954104034
also every person who's ever designed a fighting game has been a sexual deviant
Edit: Hope that wasn't off-topic I think Mortal Kombat was like really important in shaping the progress of video games even if it was in a bad way and really it's sad and pathetic how long the shock value lasted wow we can render blood and gore and boobies now
Edit: 90s - wow people are really impressionable
00s - wow people are fucking idiots watching internet porn while working on nuclear reactors and killing themselves after watching avatar on their ipad
Edit: I'm not that jaded really
Edit: I think internet is really cool for that reason like I said you only hear about anorexia every once in a while is it better now or is it just not CONSTANTLY on the news anymore? Like now you can actually look up facts and figures about it instead of just 'duhh there's no more 60 minutes on it so I guess anoerxia is over'
Edit: people still cared about 'bits'
Edit: r.l stine jerry seinfeld

Ragnar that article rules so hard. It really has a good point about how during that era of 3D everyone was using their imagination to fill in the gaps. I didn't realize how true this idea was until I tried to go back and play PS1-era games, and I really didn't remember everything being so blocky and bad. It's really because my brain just USED IMAGINATION to make everything much better, and now we're so used to graphics being better that we don't really do that anymore.
-
You say that now but you'll be saying the same thing about today's games in 15 years.
-
haha like super-fast breakcore shit has spoiled me so badly with regard to games, I was playing Goldeneye which I remember as like good gameplay but the game literally has NO FLOW compared to what it could be. I mean challenge is nice but I didn't realize how much challenge came from the controls not being intuitive or smooth at all
Edit: I'm pretty sure the excitement in fps games now is not from uh sadistic tendencies but something like a cathartic feel knowing you just narrowly escaped danger. Same reason Mario jumping over a pit is exciting because you're able to make it over. But I still think the ultimate goal in gameplay is to not have to think about it, like 'I want to be able to stop thinking' but in a way like you're in the 'zone' I guess. Well maybe that's not the right choice of words but I dunno do games still have the same sound effect for the same action to this day? Well it would be kind of disorienting if a 1-up made one sound sometimes and another some other times wouldn't it. I'm dumbing it down but like 'not learning any more rules than you have to' like if an enemy can see around corners it feels cheap because until then you're just going by the rules of life. Do they even have games where enemies duck for cover yet? I think that would be a cool feature and sort of not-as-violent alternative to shooting someone, just shit bullets in the direction of the bad guys and they're like ohshit (hides behind a crate or something). It's probably been done right. Yeah sort of controlled chaos or something. Well I'd been thinking for a while it's sort of a bullet time sort of idea, like for years it had already been you can literally see bullets WHIZZING by you this can easily be made into some sort of fulfillment of some basic fantasy like to be able to be in the thick of danger all the sights and sounds and yet appreciate being there

When I play racing games I always switch to first person view (the one off the front bumper) because it immerses me as completely as possible in the experience of the game. The track, the turns, the speed. All the elements of a racing game feel more tangible to me when I can't see my car, because as soon as I do I guess I start thinking to myself "This is fun, but I'm just racing this digital car around the track, and it takes up all the screen and all my visibility."
I play a lot of racing games and I've noticed that I'm the only one out of any of my friends that does this in any racing game we play, or even random strangers at arcades. I've never really stood back and thought about it.
-
I never play racing games in first person, it makes me a little dizzy and I play them way better when I can see my car and what it's doing (plus in a game like Forza I don't spend all that time making some design for my car just to never see it).
-
if you like racing games in first person it means you have a natural enjoyment of being disoriented and are more likely to try hallucinogens
-
This looks really horrible to play when the camera swings round behind one of the fighters for no reason
-
I think that's for demo purposes to show it''s all 3D
-
I think I actually heard of a study like my last post but it was about children who like SPINNING or something. Or it might've just been somebody on youtube legalize everything ever sentient hamsters did 9/11 squarepusher is kewl

He gets his balls chopped off in half.
best mk ever
-
Looks awesome but not as fluid gameplay as I'd like.
-
Here's some game play:
Highlights: characters have supers and their own normal moves.
-
seeing johnny kage eat that fatality at the end was so fitting
-
This definitely looks a lot better than vs DC. Seems like they are putting a lot more effort into what made MK fun instead of trying to appeal to the mainstream, might actually pick this up when it comes out.
-
Yeah, the gameplay has honestly surprised me. It looks like they really are "trying" now, as if MK isn't just going to be about the silly gore this time. The fighting system actually looks more than half assed this time, which is great.
-
I love that move where Sub Zero stabs them with an icicle-sword-thing and then snaps it off.
-
Tag Team matches also looked surprisingly fluid and awesome
