Title: Warpaint (a cool band)
Post by: jamie on June 14, 2010, 11:35:19 am
This band is pretty good. I haven't listened to alot of guitar music in a long while so it sounds very fresh to me at least, I dunno if 500 other bands are doing the exact same thing as these people. I don't think so, though.

I like the bass on this song alot, and all the guitars, too. I like her voice as well, and the effects. Pretty good!

It looks like they played the song in double time or something and slowed it down. Maybe not double time, cos this is a fast song and I think playing it x2 would be very hard...maybe. Anyway it's a cool effect I haven't seen before. I haven't really paid attention to the lyrics yet apart from noticing 'i'll break your heart to keep you far from where all danger starts' and I can never really related to lyrics like that but what do I know.

I don't really know much about them. I have a 5 song EP which sounds pretty good. I heard about them from a john frusciante forum I check every now and then, because john used to be the singer's boyfriend.

I think they only just got signed. They're laying in london in october and I think I might go see them. Anyone else know them?

funny you should bring them up because yesterday somebody's facebook status was "warpaint at DC 9 tonight" and I was like what the hell is warpaint.  she's a hipster too so I was like WHO CARES!

I kind of dug the song though

i actually listened to it this time and if it wasn't for her voice (it is not pleasing to my ears and I don't think I understood a single word she attempted to form) this might be pretty okay.   Actually I lied I've gotten farther into the song and it just kind of sucks.  My synopsis boring song that is attempted to be made interesting by adding stupid vocal effects and echoey guitars.

you know that is probably why i like the video, but i liked the music before i knew the band was a bunch of pretty ladies. i don't know if you should jump to this conclusion like that though. it's not like there isn't anything to this music, there is plenty to appreciate before getting to the fact the bandmembers are attractive. would you say that about any band you didn't like that had pretty women in it?

how come? is the drama too much, are they trying to be too cool or something? cos i can see that, and I'm not really crazy about the lyrics. i kind of came at this band from a weird angle because since i heard about it through john frusciante and I know he mixed the ep I can hear some big similarities to Ataxia, in the songs themselves and the mixing. so i know i'm probably not seeing the same things other people aresomeone said the word hipster before, and i definitely don't want to be some asshole, but i hear that word get thrown around at alot so i try to not let it influence me too much.

i'm listening to the ep just now. i still like it. i like the guitar tones alot, there's an atmosphere to them that i've always liked alot but i don't know how to describe it. it makes me think of cliffs and caves, and beams of sunlight shining in through holes. there was probably a music video of a song with all of these elements i saw when i was 5 on mtv or something. i keep finding out everything i like today is because i saw something similar to it early on in my life. i don't know if i've ever made a single choice that wasn't determined out of the random chance of what i happened to be in the room for when i was too young to remember things. probably not.

i feel like i still barely know anything about music, but i'm getting there.

I'd say only the singer is attractive anyways.  I didn't even notice the drummer was a girl.

I don't like their noses.

maybe what you said up top plays a part but mostly it just sounds boring to me! first time I listened it sounded like something I'd hear on a rock radio station. I don't think it'd be worthwhile going any deeper than that tryin to understand why I don't really like it

I know what you're saying in the second paragraph. this song is pretty blank for me, it's like them crooked vultures blank. but that is why I like a lot of music, I think. not necessarily something that comes from childhood, though I can probably link the first time I experienced whatever feeling the music's giving me to some specific event in my childhood. I think this happens to most people and I think that makes a lot of what they say about synaesthia garbage. I think everyone's got this stuff in them to some extent, it's just a little more prevalent in certain individuals

Elephants.

it's just few intruments (instruments in minimum) and their ringing making the soundscapes by themselves (round rawtake sounds, round and...warm?!) with reverb. occasional deliberate effects here and there. so yeah it's pretty much like frusciante's Ataxia in that sense!
it sounds dark and brooding (though anything recorded in cave does this i love cave-recordings!!) and with singer's vocals it's like bit of jeff buckley brooding mixed into Ataxia-styled indie rock.  for some reason i got very slight country influence and uh 60's retro soulpop like duffy and amy winehouse impression at the beginning but not so much later on, i wonder what that was and maybe i'll find out later.
i don't think this is really hipster or at least what kind of style is most prevalent in hipster music! this is more like Cold War Kids without the excessive boring britrock/pop in it. Cold War Kids meets Ataxia and brooding emotions heh (gimme wine...)

EDIT oops it's true though that it's pretty trendy thing to use vocal processing!i forget!! i forget again!!!

i actually listened to it this time and if it wasn't for her voice (it is not pleasing to my ears and I don't think I understood a single word she attempted to form) this might be pretty okay.
actually yeah not commenting on actual vocal skills, i don't think that's the problem. i agree that i don't really understand what she's trying to say. i just couldn't care what she says since it doesn't seem to make a point + she says so much! the song's bit too long because of this and you get guitar solos just thrown in there that yeah make up nice sounds/feel but you do think that wait shouldn't this had come earlier!? and so on.

gotta listen to demo next!! Judgement DDay...

it sounds a little better with my good headphones but the sounds probably only really make sense with good speakers.
