Title: any good 'free-roaming' games out there
Post by: Ragnar on July 06, 2010, 11:05:36 pm
hi I just digged out Pilotwings 64 from my collection and I was like wtf this game is still kind of fun. I feel so gypped it was like all the N64 launch games were these sort of non goal-oriented games where you could just have fun playing them (THE FUN MACHINES) and then it was 5 years of shitty racing games and a bunch of Rare stuff but even Banjo-Kazooie felt like no Mario 64 to me wtf why do they want me to collect so much weird shit do they just hate me or what?? But yeah Pilotwings 64 is so chill it still doesn't feel cheap like 'whoa I can fly into a barn whoa it's the statue of liberty' at least in my view. Only thing that bothers me is there are probably games that updated this concept and I'm oblivious to them. I heard there was a sequel to Aquanaut's Holiday which is a similar concept (look at shit underwater). Any PS2 games that are the same idea, like a flight game that's not combat-oriented and just meant for flying around and looking at shit for a while. Can be any sort of unstructured game like this doesn't have to be a flight simulator. Or is there some uncanny valley shit for this too like as barns become better-looking than N64 quality is it harder to convince the person they're really exploring/flying around and game doesn't  sell/get developed

oh right GTA might count but no GTA that does not sound like a relaxing game

Just Cause 2 is fun to just drive/fly/boat around and look at the scenery. You don't necessarily have to blow shit up all the time. Sometimes I like to play it to see if I can land the big planes.

Ragnar, I can't read any of your posts because they are just huge, run-on sentences with no point to them.

that's the point

I was wearing an onion on my belt (which was the style at the time) except you couldn't get white onions because of the war so instead you had to get those big yellow ones

also if you can get This game (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LSD_(video_game)) to work it might be exactly what you want.

I honestly want a game about something just non goal-oriented sort of game like Pilotwings 64 was (I know it had medals but you could also just play levels for the hell of it)

I never played any of the GTAs but that's what I liked most about driver 2, aimlessly driving around the city. several years ago someone bought me need for speed underground 2 and that's mostly what I did in that game too. actually I'm pretty sure this is all I want to do in every single 3d game that allows free-roaming exploration in any capacity. not to sound like ulillillia with bubsy 3d

but I don't know of any games that were made just for exploration, excluding all the indie 2d platformer stuff people have made in recent years. it probably seems like way too much work to develop a whole bunch of shit for a game that doesn't have a point as far as most gamers are concerned

there is this game

I wasn't joking though you would think by PS3 era they could make a game that's just fun to do nothing. Pilotwings 64 kind of suffers because of mysterious N64 fog + sometimes it's hard to tell what objects are which makes it annoying. But I was saying would a PS3 version of Pilotwings just lead to exponentially more nitpicking about realism and these games were best to make during the N64/PS1 era because it's not really realistic to begin with not just throwing uncanny valley in there honest I think there's a similar effect with videogames like Final Fantasy IV doesn't have some magic touch compared to the next-gen ones, but it's a more convincing story/world because you get less information than Final Fantasy X or something. You don't even hear anybody speak in Final Fantasy IV

was hoping there would be some indie game like this because they don't have to worry about marketing/putting in stores/on an actual CD gives more reason to do whatever the fuck all you want

Edit: Summary: thinks some videogame company did attempt this in a tech demo or something, but nobody found it half as enjoyable as Pilotwings 64 or something because with more information/detail/resolution your mind fills the gaps in less/ player is less convinced they're actually exploring and shit. Or everybody wanted to start blowing things up/crashing like in GTA

i was actually thinking/came to the same conclusion yesterday before i read this topic Ragnar!! what a coincidence. maybe i post it here or we talk about it in msn but yeah even games like okami fuck up that part with oh wow look a magical fairyland, except that uh everybody really loves talking why do they talk so much oh actually everybody's busy convincing you it's a real world it just looks funny. also your posts make perfect sense to me.

somebody must do a thesis on like old videogames would have only 2 lines of dialogue because of memory restrictions and if they did want extra dialogue it had to be good enough to warrant some crazy compression algorithm then all of a sudden every game was on CD and everybody just had everyone talk for fucking ever (and with the annoying anime voices like they originally intended). But you know the most powerful line in all of videogame history was one of those sparse badly translated lines like WHAT A TERRIBLE NIGHT TO HAVE CURSE or something. Or I know some game just begins with DARK ZOOL KILL FATHER. AVENGE BRAVE FELLOW and seriously nothing could get you more pumped than that

all videogame script writers were forced to become e.e. cummings or something (this is probably a horrible comparison but I know one of those writers sounds like a 90's videogame when you think about it)

There's a Wii game called... Endless Ocean. I haven't played it, but I really want to. You're a diver and you just explore the ocean, that's it. Just look at rad fish and whales and stuff. Looks like fun, and I think there's a sequel or something. Also, it's cheap.

There's a storyline in it and missions you can do, but if you don't want to do anything but just dive and explore the ocean you can do that as well. My 9 year old niece loved it.

vvvvvv isn't really a free-roaming game in the way Ragnar means tho just another dumb achievement game based upon a dumb gameplay gimmick with some kinda cool visuals and music

Well regardless of how he means it, vvvvvv is "free-roaming" in the sense that all levels are interconnected and you're free to go wherever you want. I guess what you mean might be more like sandbox gameplay?

mostly I wanted to say something about vvvvvv but travel in that game is goal-oriented and it's also difficult. definitely nifflas's games and maybe even the metroids are closer but I don't think either of those are what he means

yeah sandbox is probably what I mean? or not. I agree shit like Tail of the Sun got old never tried LSD for playstation it was just something I wanted to do on a whim but yeah now I'm terrified there's only like one non goal-oriented game in existence besides like mario paint well technically you have the goal of making pictures in that game?

I mean forget that most games are about KILLING and LOOTING even stuff like simcity is like all about progress and lol like imposing your will on things I will build a building here (god complex) I want a game that is just smelling the roses however the hell they make this interesting control scheme graphic presentation whatever but it's not an interactive movie either. Isn't Shadow of the Collosus just RUNNING for the first 5 hours of the game and somehow they make this interesting. I fail to see how this wouldn't be a worthwhile goal in gaming even if the killing part of games is just CATHARTIC how much catharsis do you need creepy weirdos addicted to catharsis

I think games are actually pretty good at uh like something being fun solely because it's a SIMULCRUM or whatever the word is all the first-person shooter games that are obsessed with having a bathroom in the game what is so interesting about your virtual self being in a bathroom within a game even though bathrooms are taken for granted in real life suddenly they become this thing worth recreating in a videogame. Even if it's like SOCIETY like scared of being in AWE of a bathroom in real life for fear that someone will catch you there are public restrooms where you can lock door and stare at a faucet for minutes on end if you really really wanted to. I guess you can't shoot up a bathroom though. Obviously not JUST bathrooms but there are many sort of non-fantastic game settings like that also taking place in games where you can't cause mayhem like in GTA so is it a sort of waking fantasy about doing crazy shit in a public setting or is it something different going on

Edit: the bathroom in the game actually represents the womb regressing back to a fetus and if you shoot up the walls of the bathroom it is actually trying to re-escape the womb and is cathartic in this way

dear esther looks kind of good the source engine always seemed like it would be good for a game like that like to the point I thought exploring the game world was the thing they were HOLDING BACK on like we only have this much game world so we will extend the game with a stupid water puzzle and start the game in this spacious train station with no combat/breaks in exploration just enough to get them addicted
