Title: Gaming Art Poster
Post by: Axor on July 07, 2010, 01:06:02 pm
I designed this poster called "Supernova Ludens"
with a supernova of all kinds of gaming systems.
It is based of a magazine cover I did for GEE magazine.
You can buy it here as poster in various sizes: http://www.society6.com/studio/axor/Gaming_Supernova_Poster

don't be stupid, that has nothing to do with why this stinks. and yeah, I wouldn't be giving this guy a hard time if it was in GA or something, but since he's just trying to sell shit I'm not going to pull any punches or bother giving constructive criticism. this actually is derivative marketing garbage tho whether you like it or not

Yeah I think the way this was presented on this forum was pretty bad.  Iirc he's only ever posted his posters here (weird sentence) so he's basically a simplistic adbot.  Still, I do like the poster itself sans text.

it's a likable style and also something gamers would probably like. I prefer his last poster, but even that was kind of derivative of the typical graphic design marketing garbage everyone's doing

but even as typical marketing garbage I'm not sure it's entirely successful. the transition in the middle is kind of awkward. it's nice how the magentas and whites are repeated in the outer rings in the glints and screens but then towards the middle there are these kinda out-of-place bands of color. I dunno, it doesn't bother me much atm but the first time I saw it I thought that part was pretty bad

I actually clicked the link and then went to the main store on that site and I really like a lot of those tshirts.  They're by several different artists, but some of them are p. sweet.  Reminds me a lot of Imaginary Foundation stuff which I've posted about on GW a few times because it's really rad.  I might have to pick up a few of these shirts next time I buy clothes.

is there a name for graphics like this like MOTION GRAPHICS (except without the motion) because yeah this sort of style was a little refreshing when it came out like it was a step up from crappy uncanny CG or whatever came before it and I'm kind of assuming it's really easy sort of cut-and-paste to do I mean would something like this be hand-placed at all or does the computer figure everything out according to some fractal grid it's kind of horror vacui

I guess I'd be less pissed at this t-shirt/poster if I saw people who were also doing traditional hand-drawn sort of stuff that actually looks fun to design like I drew Marbio this is like oh god the BP logo so good must buy

I'm also just assuming there are way better ways to use this sort of technique I like these covers http://media.photobucket.com/image/detrimentalist/section912/venetian-snares-detrimentalist-2008.jpg  http://www.ifmusic.co.uk/images/product_images/boxcutterarecibomessage.jpg

maybe the other shirts are better I'll check it out

This is pretty nice. Not a big fan of the typography at the bottom myself, it seems a bit too overdone with the two different colors and styles. I suppose rich black is not used because it might interfere with the details of the shape?

would something like this be hand-placed at all or does the computer figure everything out according to some fractal grid
It's most likely computer-aided. It's pretty insane to do something like this without computer help these days, since it's become pretty easy with tools like Scriptographer (http://scriptographer.org/).

yeah ok I don't hate the poster with a passion but I just don't have any strong feelings about it whatsoever. If I felt something initially I just chalk it up to 'here's a single gaming poster in isolation from other stimuli' I think if I saw it in a huge list on gaming poster website I wouldn't be fazed by it at all because there would be some other posters on there. I'd also buy every random Nintendo Power poster on ebay before this, just as far as gaming posters I've seen before that I can visualize in my head. Even the boring ones like TECMO BOWL pull-out poster

Also order some Ghana posters but those are like 500 bucks but seriously would be a chick magnet
