The demo's up on Steam. (http://store.steampowered.com/app/50130) I pre-ordered it after playing as I was impressed however I placed my order with Play.com as it seems PC games cost £5 more on Steam? Ridicularse.
I played it last night on my semi-ancient rig and it ran in full settings (minus the PhyX BS) and it seems a lot prettier than the Rockstar competition.
I don't think the demo really does the game justice as you only get a small area of the city and it's out of context with the rest of the game. It is very similar to GTA4, it's just presented a lot better. The style and general feeling from the game is great.
I worry though as I am pretty sure no open-world-sandbox game will ever live up to the bar that was set my Mafia 1. I doubt the sequel will be as good but we'll see.
I spoke to Dr Ears on Steam and he seemed pretty impressed by it. Any of you guys going to be playing this on release day?

The first trailer that was like uuhhhh *sploooooge*

Played through the demo. Seems like they improved on everything except how the cars handle. Which, once you get used to it it isn't too bad. In fact I remember towards the end of the original they got a lot easier to control (experience, or maybe they just got rid of the "realistic" feel of them, I don't know)
There's a cover system now, but it's a third person shooter, so that's a given, just like the health regen.
I'll probably pick this up when it comes out. Loved the first one, and this demo looks pretty promising

As Ed said, I was pretty impressed with the demo overall. It was better than GTAIV by a longshot.
-
I get it it but I am out of money for full priced games. All I can afford is to scrape the occasional 5-10 deal on steam.
However I'd like to play the original before I dive into this game anyway.

This only makes sense if the sequel's story relys on knowing the original's story.

roflmao.. "mafia"
-
Does that mean bumjuggler in finnish or something? Explain yourself man!
-
Enjoyed the demo a little too much, but I got the feeling it's best to stick to the story rather than driving around and causing havoc, it just seems so much less impressive than running through a building on fire with a tommy gun.

Noticed that this is now available on Steam, I'd like to ask what people's impressions are?
I cancelled my pre-order as play were being funny about my card and I never re-ordered it. I read a few days later on Kotaku that the story is really short (akin to a lot of games where they have cut a lot out to save for DLC releases later) and that there is not a lot else to do in the game with regard to free roam etc.
-
I haven't played the full one yet, as I haven't enough money to pay off my preorder down at EBGames. My flatmate bought it on Steam, I'll repost with his impressions after it has finished downloading.
-
I snapped and bought it on steam. It's a lot like the first Mafia game so far. Atmospheric, immersive and very little outside the story. I better get some sleep.

Nah. I find its harder to go 'backwards' in a game series then 'forwards' because you start to 'miss' the additions the the sequel added. Playing i order also lets you appreciate the series's evolution. Plus even if the story isn't directly connected, their may be some references made in the game from the older one. If you know the references the experience might be somewhat improved.
Also. ignoring all of these issues. I'm kind of OCD about these things.

The sequel has a reference to Morello from the first Mafia right at the beginning, he makes a short cameo appearence in the intro when he's going on about his childhood see if you can spot him ;D

its a lot of fun a fun game

I like this game, I got the demo on the 360 and I love how you can run and slide to cover! I hate how theres no hand to hand combat because what do I do if I run out of bullets? But then again I am playing the demo so there might be some melee weapons I'm missing out on. The cars controlling seems weird and they don't go extremely fast either, one minor gripe I have is that the cops in cars have one driver and one shooter and you can't shoot when your in the car.
The shooting is awesome and smooth, only thing is, it's kinda hard finding a dropped weapon, I killed a cop couldn't find his revolver for a little while. The notification you get when a weapon is under your feet is kinda small too. I'm definitely going to buy this when I get the money though.
EDIT: Oh wait theres a speed limiter that you can turn off...
-
There is a whole section of the game which is hand-to-hand combat. I won't spoil it for you by telling you the context in which it arises.
-
Oh wait my bad, I didn't know it was the B button I just beat up a gunstore owner and stole a few guns! I keep getting distracted in here, is it just me or is everyone prone to causing unnecessary chaos?
-
I heard the ending was super terrible
-
it is. its ridiculously bad, even by modern gaming standards.
-
The ending really pissed me off. I wanted something exciting, a good end to a good story. It more or less was really disappointing.
The rest of the game was amazing though.
-
The ending screams DLC MF.
It's robbery it really is.
-
Probably. It wouldn't surprised me.
It also screams sequel. But who knows.
Really fucking great references to Mafia 1 in that game though.
-
already some dlc out. they dont waste any time, huh?
