Title: Decent freeware games?
Post by: UPRC on October 05, 2010, 12:50:15 am
So I've been looking for some good freeware games to play, and not necessarily community games. I'm not looking for RPG Maker games or anything of the sort. Gamemaker games I am iffy about, but if they're really cool and original (like Laz's games) then I'd probably give them a go.

What I'm looking for are freeware indie games that are self coded and such. Cave Story is one example, as are the billions of space shooters that a few folks here were obsessed with last year or the year before.

Cave Story, Knytt Stories, Soldat (I count this), and Warning Forever are about the only ones I can think of that I have already played. I know that there are tons more and that you folks have played a plethora. Got any favourites that you'd care to suggest?

Minecraft Minecraft Minecraft!

But seriously, try giving Loved (http://www.alexanderocias.com/loved.php) a try. It's short, kind of artsy, but I'd like to see what you think about it. Been trying to write a big analysis of this game for a while. It's pretty smart when you get thinking about it.

this was really good. thanks for linking it. games that use this style of capturing emotion in interaction and games that use procedural generation like minecraft are imo the most interesting things right now. i don't really know what kind of vocabulary to use to analyse this style though. with procedurally generated games it's easier because programming terms provide the vocab to some extent. do you know of any discussion where people are starting to develop ways of talking about what these games do?

You mentioning GM games made me think of the Jumper series.

Excellent 2D platformer. Can get pretty hard though.

Here is a link to Jumper Redux (remake of the original): http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/jumperredux

Man its been a long time since I've played this...

EDIT: lol NVM. link is dead. Here this one works: http://www.pcgaming.ws/viewgame.php?game=jumper_redux

AV Club's Sawbuck Gamer column lists a bunch of games, mostly freeware, every week complete with a review and some images.  I've checked out a few of them and they've generally been quite fun.  Would be worth checking out.

Garry's Mod 9 is free. Though 10 is so much better.

Also there are a ton of rogue-likes that are free. I know one of them is called "Stone Soup" or something.

Warzone 2100, it's now open source and totally free

It's a decent RTS, loved it when it was on PS1, hard as hell.

I thought loved was going to be better the way you guys were talking about it, it was kind of lame passed the gimmick though.

Anyway http://freeware.remakes.org/ has a good bag of games to swim around in.

I used to play that all the time when I had a demo of it. Really liked it, but couldn't get into the full version. I have a friend who loved Warzone, so I'll have to tell him about this!

psh hater. Yeah I admit there are things you get "suckered in" to buying, completely optional but you're like shit might as well support dev in a tiny way by buying a skin. Though I haven't bought a single thing yet :/ . I like this better than combat arms (yeah I know completely different game), where its not so shitty and things that you buy stay with you forever rather than "10 hours" or something. Plus if you're playing with decent players, and you know what you're doing as well, then you can get pretty intense rounds where the game ends up lasting you 75-80 minutes rather than the average 25-40. There are overpowered champions, but once you know which ones then it becomes easier to  counteract.
I never played DoTA which league of legends boasts that it derives from. But after playing LoL, I kinda wish I did. I tried getting it, do people even play anymore? Apparently site shutdown too.

Installing Warzone right now.

Just spend a one time fee of $30 for Heroes of Newerth if LoL has you suckered. You'll never need to buy money for more "champions" or "runes" or whatever they're calling it. And the graphics are a million times better.

You don't have to buy any of the gameplay stuff in LoL, only the cosmetic useless crap. At least, as far as I've seen. You earn IP to buy heroes from playing the game. Also LoL and HoN are only the same game on a basic level, so it's really down to preference.

You do realize it's a choice to hate either iteration of dota 2.0, right? Strange how HoN and LoL players treat the opposing game. It's rare to find someone (like me) who likes both.

Speaking of which I need to find my info for HoN again. I bought a retail account a while ago under a new name (since my main ACC name was taken when retail opened up) and it's about time I pop in and see what's up with them. It's been months.

If you're after something good, if quite old, try CASTLE OF THE WINDS. It's a game from like the early 90s that used to be shareware but is freeware now. It's a little like diablo, but with an actual plot. The moves are based on D&D which is good. Graphics are a little weak though - but it depends how good your IMAGINATION is :D

Oh and apparently there is an ONLINE version now:

So let me tell you about something. It's a big secret of mine.

I love trains. FUKKIN LOVE DEM TRAINS
TRAINS TRAINS TRAINS TRAINS TRAINS TRAINS TRAINS TRAINS TRAINS TRAINS TRAINS TRAINS TRAINS TRAINS

Do you like trains, do you associate with things on rails? You don't? How about some BUSES or how about some BOATS or how about some goddamn AIRPLANES!

Well let me tell you have I got a thing for you to try! http://www.openttd.org/en/ (http://www.openttd.org/en/) It's got all the transportation you'd ever want. But wait I have looked at OpenTTD before and you need the original game of Transport Tycoon! This is false, you can get the winders installer and use the free packages for all the stock art in the game meaning you can play this for free.

Get this game, lay some rails, move some goods and make some $$$. FUKKIN TRAINS ALL UP IN THIS SHIT The wiki is pretty good too if you get confused.
