Wikileaks are now slowly pushing them out.
WikiLeaks cablegate website (http://cablegate.wikileaks.org)
The Guardian's cable stuff (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/the-us-embassy-cables)
lots of fun stuff like:
DUBAI RULER DISCUSSES IRAN AND IRAQ WITH SENATOR LIEBERMAN (http://cablegate.wikileaks.org/cable/2007/06/07DUBAI355.html)
Iraq: Any plan B?
------------------
3.(C) MbR restated the UAE's support for the US in the region,
noting "the UAE is the only country that is 100 percent with the
US." MbR said UAE support for the US effort remained firm, but
asked what is "plan B" should the current US approach not
stabilize Iraq. Senator Lieberman quoted the Chairman of the
Joint Chiefs of Staff as saying "plan B is to make plan A work."
ACTION REQUEST: OVERCOMING GERMAN DOUBTS ON U.S.
DATA PRIVACY PRACTICES (http://cablegate.wikileaks.org/cable/2010/01/10BERLIN128.html)
Germany has become a difficult partner with regards to
security-related information sharing initiatives following
the September 27 national elections, which brought the FDP
into the governing coalition. The FDP sees themselves as
defenders of citizens' privacy rights and these views have
led the FDP to oppose many of Germany's post-9/11
counterterrorism legislative proposals (see reftels). At
times, the FDP's fixation on data privacy and protection
issues looks to have come at the expense of the party forming
responsible views on counterterrorism policy.
only a small fraction of the cables has been released so far (219 of 251,287). this is big.
-
This is huge. I'd love to dig through these but unfortunately I'm working right now. (I'm surprised to see how many cables came out of The Hague.)

Please don't let this happen.
And no, I'm not talking to god. I'm talking to YOU, dietcoke. Do something about this.
How possible do you think this is, by the way? I've always considered that despite all the rhetoric, both Israel and the US know very well that attacking Iran is not a move they should make, and that if they do, it can't be "a surgical precision strike targeting their nuclear facilities"; they'll have to see it through to the end. I think they realize that, and don't want it. But internal communication suggesting otherwise is very, very scary.

Yep, there we go. Even the one media company considered to be "left" by public opinion is decisively against transparency.
-
IDK about this. That's all I can say. I love transparency. Like really love it. but I'm worried this will only give just enough information to piss people off and not enough information to resettle them again.
Honestly though I wish there was total 100% world wide government transparency.

Alls i can do is keep on keepin' on with my commie groups, but honestly I'm pretty pessimistic about everything these days. We're basically in the midst of one of the greatest crises of capital in history and big ol' wars and other horrible shit tend to coincide with these moments in history.
I think a war between Israel/US and Iran is pretty likely within our lifetime :(
-
Shit. Am I just being paranoid when I say it's possible we might see 2 large wars? You know, what with China and N. Korea? Or do you think nothing will come of that?
-
um I'm pretty sure my white middle class way of life won't ever end. sorry to burst your bubbles.
-

Probably not. China and the US share too many common interests to go to war. The only reason China really tolerates the DPRK is that it acts as a buffer and keeps US military bases off its borders, not because of any kind of ideological solidarity or whatever. Any conflict between the US and China is gonna take the form of economic maneuvering unless something super-severe happens. Nobody is interested in going to war in that region, there's too much at stake: dense populations, huge amounts of important capital concentrated in small areas, etc.
-
So why does wikileaks do this? Do they really care about accountability or is it just an ego-boost thing by now?
yeah im pretty sure the wikileaks dudes are just sittin around fistbumping, playing xbox and doing all this to feel awesome about themselves

i would be willing to go as far as to say a war between Israel (and probably the U.S, although most likely just with aerial and naval support. highly unlikely any sort of conventional ground war would happen in this situation) and Iran is very likely to occur within the next year or two unless major breakthroughs or a sudden change in Israeli politics (lol) occurs. israel doesn't seem to be moving towards accepting anything other than a complete halt of the Iranian nuclear program which has pretty much 0 chance of happening

it's ok, i've been playing fallout like all month. i know what to do when the bombs drop(shoot matthew perry in the head)

By the way, is it a metaphorical cable or is it a physical cable? I really don't know

an innocent man has been arrested on false claims.

Julian assange is the perfect face for wikileaks cause they poke their nose in and he has one heck of a nose

Anonymous is always kinda like that kid, it's doing things for good reasons, but it's actions and justification for them is pretty silly. Saying 'it's us vs the government', really? O_o

Oh, the irony!

notice how swiftly they went after him once he threatened the banks. I wonder if this means that wikileaks'll be releasing that insurance policy/"thermonuclear device" now that assange is captured.
I actually had an argument with my partner about this. Like I was all gung-ho about FREEDOM OF INFORMATION and POWER TO THE PEOPLE and shit, but I guess the guy has been posting leaks about sensitive things. I think a rape charge is like the government going EASY on him (if, in fact, he isn't actually a rapist, which he may well be...).
Weirdly I've seen so many newscasts suggesting that he should be executed. It's made me a little bit freaked out, but like . Lord Haw Haw was executed during WW2, not for like TELLING SECRETS, but for broadcasting radio messages about how the UK should sign up with the nazis and how we were going to lose and shit. I really don't get why they would frame him for rape instead of just offing him, if the government/s were going to do anything at all.
Like "DON'T LISTEN TO THAT GUY HE'S A RAPIST" isn't exactly finishing him off. It would give the media ammo and the opportunity to say "Wikileaks founder and famous rapist" when beginning stories talking about him though.
PS: More stories about how Russia is run by gangsters please Wikiman :D !!! Less stories about PERSONAL DANGER!!!
-
Maybe offing him would have alerted people because it would be far to obvious what had happened. This way, it seems indirect enough that maybe we might not connect the dots.
Of course this just speculation.
-
because issuing a warrent for his arrest merely days after they were released is not obvious?

PayPal, which has stopped processing donations to Wikileaks, has also been targeted.
The firm originally said Wikileaks' account had violated its terms of services.
But the online payment firm has since said that it stopped payments following a request from the US government, a claim denied by the US State Department.
"On 27 November the State Department, the US government, basically wrote a letter saying that the Wikileaks activities were deemed illegal in the United States," PayPal's Osama Bedier told the Le Web conference in France.
"And as a result our policy group had to make the decision of suspending their account.

It's gonna be pretty funny when Julian Assange wins Time's person of the year. If they stay true to the online poll he'll win with a decent margin.

That's some good shit, and not surprising. How many people do you think have worked at Guantanamo Bay and left there completely satisfied that it was the right thing?

I thought this was pretty cool: http://zunguzungu.wordpress.com/2010/11/29/julian-assange-and-the-computer-conspiracy-%E2%80%9Cto-destroy-this-invisible-government%E2%80%9D/ (http://zunguzungu.wordpress.com/2010/11/29/julian-assange-and-the-computer-conspiracy-%E2%80%9Cto-destroy-this-invisible-government%E2%80%9D/). It's about an article Assange wrote which dealt with attacking conspiracies using something like graph theory: trying to break up a secretive network by attacking the links between them and exploiting the structural tendencies towards secrecy so that they implode in on themselves. I haven't read his article yet but it's an interesting way of looking at it!

"He's got the personal files of every prisoner in GITMO," said one person who was in contact with Assange earlier this year.
On Wednesday, Assange's lawyer, Mark Stephens, told Reuters that because WikiLeaks websites were still operating, there was no plan to release "insurance file" at the moment.
So, Assange has a contingency if Wikileaks is ever shut down? I wonder what he's keeping up his sleeve
-

He has a secret dossier the highlight of which is the full sequence of George Bush's DNA. If wikileaks is shut down we'll enter full blown #monkeygate

the entire storyline of Killer Instinct will become true in 2 years
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killer_Instinct#Story (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killer_Instinct#Story)
actually it's not very good I just miss all the 90's videogames movies with MEGACORPS somebody make like Streets of Rage with Mr. X except he's obviously based on someone you would want to beat up like Steve Jobs I miss stuff like that subtle jab at reality through fantastical story
yeah I dunno I'm scared let's make up fake speculation the T-virus is real and Apple invents it. Or maybe KITCHENS ETC.
I dunno I'm scared and not at the same time I'm pretty sure just everyone on Earth is incompetent now
-
I'd say it's more damaging to the US that they are going through so much (assumed) trouble to get Assange than the leaks on the internet.
Because, you know. Some of us don't even read WikiLeaks, but most of us read the newspaper, and when we read "international scandal", "problems for America diplomatically" and "Assange suddenly arrested for alleged rape", we tend to put one, one and one together and come up with three.

It's comforting to know that Sarah Palin could completely nuke the Scandinavian penisula and Wikileaks would still be safe.

IDK all of this is awfully spectacular and doesn't look very "grassroots" to me at all. Not to talk out of school or insinuate a conspiracy or anything but that shit just seems REALLLLY fishy to me, especially considering that the hacker snitch-dude out turned in Manning seemed to think that wikileaks is a front for some kind of private organization

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenLeaks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenLeaks)
What's that last bit, front to a private organization?
It's pretty clear that Assange is a bit of prick based on what Domscheit-Berg and some other used-to-be-wikileaks people have been saying. It's also becoming more and more about this heroic cyberage robin hood tale. The openleaks people are complaining about how all the resources were directed to the massive US leaks, Afganistan, Iraq and cables, putting everything else second, and now Assange is deliberately trying to make as many headlines as possible by releasing the cables bit by bit over several weeks. But I'm not sure I can really honestly blame Assange for that. For being a tyrannical moron on a power trip maybe, but deliberately aiming for the headlines not so much. Staying true to grassroots activism sounds awesome but then pragmatism kicks in, and such a great strong character embodying the whole spirit of information rebellion or whatever is just going to bring a lot of good publicity and lot of popularity for the cause, which is simply a good thing by any standards. It might be flashy, but if you want to stir up something in the masses you're gonna need something like that.

why doesn't julian assange publish all the cables at once, so governments can get to persecutin more people who need it?
left by mainstream american standards is still very much far on the right by any other standard.
lol
-
why doesn't julian assange publish all the cables at once, so governments can get to persecutin more people who need it?
they probably aren't going to persecute anyone considering the government itself knew all these things were going on (that's why they're cables), and wikileaks has stated that they vet their information. their intention is to anonymize those working in the field so that those responsible for making the policy take the fall.
-
+ they try to maximize media coverage.

http://www.itnews.com.au/News/242051,un-mulls-internet-regulation-options.aspx
Naturally, once a leak comes out, especially one this large, there will be a push for tighter security. This seems more like a push to limit free speech on the internet, akin to what is happening in China right now. There are ways around things, of course - no computer security is impossible to beat after all, there are some talented hackers out there. Do we really need global regulation on the internet, especially from a practically defunct organisation like the UN?
-
lol
wots funny
