Title: Goodbye, farewell and sayonara
Post by: c0nfu53d on November 29, 2010, 09:29:14 pm
DOUBT ANYONE WILL MISS ME BUT JUST IN CASE...

It would be rude to go without saying goodbye.

Gamingw has changed alot since I first joined, some for the better and some for the worse. Either way I guess I have come to a point where I no longer feel it's no longer a place where I wish to post so onward to RMN where I will be posting from now on.

RMGAMEARCHIVE

Will be back shortly, although with added moonfruit! http://rmgamearchive.moonfruit.com/ (http://rmgamearchive.moonfruit.com/)

Nothing to see at the moment though.

LASTLY

Thanks to bart for GW and rami and all the past mods and admins.

Hope this saltw.net thing works out for you.

Yeah, I'm taking off too. Not for any hateful reasons or anything, it just feels like GW (or SW) has changed an awful lot from the site I used to like coming to. Not saying that this place is bad or anything now, it's still cool and has good people, but the focus is shifting in all sorts of directions and some of them feel odd to me.

Still hope that Salt World takes off though, and I wish you guys the best of luck! Rock on, Drule.

I find it weird that people are leaving now but they were happy to stick around when GW was doing absolutely nothing for however many months.

Well, it was familiar. . . and who says the old GW ways are gone? Not me. and UPRC, us members are responsible for the various directions this place goes, so stick around and steer it to where you want. And looks like I'll still be seeing some of you anyway, as I, like some others  here, belong to RMN as well.

Yeah I'm not really in the mood to post because this skin is so ugly looking and the way the topics look like give me a headache, but I'm just going to lurk until the new skin gets here. Don't really understand why Drule couldn't have waited to start SW until the skin was done... it's not like waiting a few extra days would have hurt anyone.

I don't see how you can be on a forum for several years of your life and then be unable to put up with change (especially if your problem is just TEMPORARY SKIN) for less than, what, two days?  At least give it a full week or two, you've all already invested enough time into GW/SW you might as well give it a second and see if you like it.

Look at who's saying that.  Jeepers talk about a perspective shift.  Suddenly I am pro-SW instead of anti-newGW but fuck I feel more like posting here than on old GW because I feel like maybe something might come out of it.

I think that is more than most any of us cared to know about your personal hygiene habits.

Joking aside, it sort of makes sense for people to start peeling off now. They probably found gamingw and stuck around for a specific set of reasons. Even when everything was stagnant and broken, they still had the basic shell of what they showed up for. Now that things are starting to happen and there seems to be an actual direction (or directions) again, some people are bound to realize that they're holding on to something that just doesn't exist anymore. Also, it is easier to leave while everything is still foreign. There's no sense of attachment.

Still, it wouldn't surprise me to see some of the people who leave come back a couple months from now just to see what's up with the site. There could be some really good stuff going on that will pull them back into the fold.

Then again, I disagree with almost everyone here, so there is the extremely remote possibility that I'm wrong.

actually matt I was bringing attention the fact that all that's changed is software and appearance. actually these guys were some of the members calling for big changes (indie-game-and-tutorial-hub.net) back in the gw7 discussion thread. we just had different ideas of what gw was!! no I don't think so. aside from the community I'm not super sure why anyone would have stuck around here if they were looking more for an RMN kind of website, because that's not what gw was at all for the last 4 or so years

I feel like it was GW the name and URL, the character/place in their heads that was keeping them here. and now that that URL is gone the spell is broken and they're left wondering why they bothered sticking around this dump all these years

w/e uprc and confuses good luck with your forum quests

There's almost nothing different about the site except the layout and that we added the toolkit forums and Welcomes & Farewells back in again. I personally feel like the current setup represents "old GW" more than gamingw.net has done over the past few years because of this.

Like someone said, I think that if you're leaving now you're probably doing it because the GW spell is broken and you're beginning to ask yourself why you are sticking around.

But yeah, good luck to everyone who chooses to leave. It's been fun having you around.

This probably. I've been gone for the last year or so. But this seems like the perfect opportunity to break "for good". GW had some good times and some good memories. Of course I'm still here writing this so... I don't know what to make of that. If only I would have had to re-register. But I didn't. So damn. This means I'll basically still be around visiting once a month to notice that nothing has happened.

Yeah, I agree totally, for me It started with the move to SMF I really don't like the look of their forums not a huge deal but as gw started to change with the focus moving to indie games, things were starting to grind and I started to feel gw was abit meh and had lost alot of it's individallity. I miss the focus on rpgmaker, the happy zoo, gw dictionary/wiki and the loss of awesome threads/crap shack which hosted some of the funniest threads ever. They were archived though which is something.

this seems like a shameless plug for rmn

Nope. But damnit! If only I had thought of that I'd have waited a week or so and plugged rmgamearchive when it's done

Still, it wouldn't surprise me to see some of the people who leave come back a couple months from now just to see what's up with the site. There could be some really good stuff going on that will pull them back into the fold.

To be honest  i'm not planning on returning except maybe occasionally to read game dev forum and I have said i'd be involved in the new chain game but aside from that there is little point. Having said that if saltw changes for the better in the long term who knows? I just can't see it returning to what it was and the direction it's going now isn't doing it for me.

Like I've said before though, a forum is never better than its members. GW was good before because it had a constellation of people whos mentality collectively contributed to the creation of a bunch of funny memes and a quirky forum culture, but stuff like that quickly change as people come and go.

I don't think it's impossible for GW/SW to once again become just as awesome - in fact, I'd even say it's likely, but it's definitely never going to be the same as it used to be. We have a good history and some good memories, and I think we should just leave it at that and move forward and try to make GW/SW as good as it can be under the circumstances we have now.

If you guys leave though because GW/SW is straying too far from what you want it to be, chances are that it's going to stray even more so as there will be no one left to push whatever ideas and concepts you think we should apply. Think about it.

This phenomenon that is happening to this is community really interesting.

It's like those stories of growing up and change, of coping up with the growth and the choices and shifted priorities. Of living in it but realizing that it's technically the same but essentially a very different one.

I think I would be sticking forever until it ultimately die. I'm not sure how long the community we know as gw will be around but it reminds of me and friends missing high school when we stepped into college, everything is just, different. It kinda sucked that we can't go back and do those epic moments again and live the life we had but that's reality and the memories are something to be treasured. When gw was still 'cool' it was cool because it lived on itself, it was a young kid growing and really excited. The current gw in my opinion is a grownup man looking back and trying to relive what was outlived, the effect is jsut inevitable and the only way for the community to stay is to grow and that means change.
I would still say that high school was way better than college and that the old gw may be the best kind of gw there will ever be. It's not the same anymore but it's any person's choice when he'll feel that it's over and it's time to let it go. And slowly we all will, and GW will ultimately die. And we all die and we will remember gw being the dumbest funniest part of our lives.

Amen.

GW's kinda weird because even early on it was like a group of subcommunities hobbled together, and over recent years, it kinda became more clear. And now we've ended up with a pretty elitest crew who look down their noses at the rpgmaker lot, and want GW to be more serious, but at the same time, the rpgmaker peoples have still kinda stayed to an extent, but never really venturing out because they had nothing in common with the others. I kinda feel that those of us in our twenties kinda have this thing where we forget that when we were younger and joined, we didnt care about much other than sexualised rtp charsets and the like, but that ended up sprouting the community we know.
I don't feel that anything has really changed, but something as simple as renaming the site seems to be representative of how the community aspect of the site is the strongest and to be honest, the key part. We kinda think that because we're into socilaist politics, than everybody who isn't is just childish. It's not the case, everybody knows it's not the case, but that seems to be this bizarre perception that people are afraid disproving.
This is kinda a chance for SW to be a better place than GW was, and if there was any time for people to just bury the hatchet, it is now. Post what you want to post, don't get bogged down by what the other aspect of the site will think of you. Enjoy SW and just try to help it and you grow.
Leaving now, after many years does kinda seem silly, and ends up reinforcing that which we all know in reality, is false. All the subcommunities are aspects of the whole, and we're all in this together. We've known each other for ages. It's the membership which makes up a community, and so every member has some degree of power over the way it develops. It can be from something as simple as posting a topic.
So, don't leave, post a topic.

</bridging the gap>

I dislike the Skin too but I'll be patient. What I miss is the features we once had as Premiums. Like a not FULL inbox, and Even just the simple Colored name, To classify essentially the old folks from the new more or less is what it did. (The Support for Premiums dropped after the fall of the Zoo, so maybe Premiums where fairly IN CROWD members.

GW Has and Will still Change my life In real life. I've met some AMAZING folks through these forums. and if it wasn't the company I met on these forums and Epiphany Gaming I would never have gotten so influenced by different musics and So submersed in Art and a forum community and a sense of Belonging, even if its with the bunch of halfling trolls we are.

We don't want people who find us by googling for GAMES either. What we do want are intelligent people who aren't turned off as soon as they see our name, which is exactly what we've avoided by straying from being called "gaming"-something.

I thought that Gracious Winners was leading the poll but in the end it didn't matter. It seems like Drule had it predestined that we were going to be called Salt World and the poll was just merely an illusion of free will.

Don't know, but I was complaining to Drule that some of the options in the poll were added too late which made it a bit unfair to those late additions. But what's done is done. The poll was up for only a little while though because everything had been set up and was ready to go and there wasn't really a reason to keep waiting anymore.

Do not fear, I am far better than all those antiquated throwbacks. FAUST IS ON THE CASE, and is worth ten thousand Eraves, fifty Kermits and 0.5 Senior Behemoths. No wait, 5!

PS: rami and DS are still around aren't they? I see them on IRC whenever I log in :o . Plus Pyrate came back FOR A DAY a few months ago!!! Also Jeff is posting now, and what the fuck is a GamemasterX???

Except for maybe DarkPriest... I MISS HIM SO ;_;.

PS: Bringing it a little more on topic, I originally HATED the name Salt World as I didn't understand it, but I did vote for it on the topic as the best choice. I can't think of a better name and, as Drule said, GamingW may return as a sister section of the overall SaltW, so that is pretty good times.

Now I've gotten used to saying "Salt-wuh" instead of "Gaming-wuh", it doesn't sound that bad at all. Plus we get to call ourselves "salties", which just adds the icing to the cake

*wonders who else is left in this place*

Bart, RPGGoddess, Nightblade, Senior Behemoth, Sovan Jedi, Legacy001, Jumar1987, Phatradeph, Tenchu, Erave, Medieve, Pyrate, Alucard, DrFunk, Lars, Kaworu, Jeff, Marcus, Dragonslayer, Ramirez, Rusty, Rowain, Darkpriest, ASE, GamemasterX, Wackfiend, Masterpaul, KermittheToad, Panda, DeathJester, headphonics...

I know I'm forgetting a crapload of people.
Rowain is still a semi-active poster, DS, rami and ASE are active members, and Jester still was up to about a month ago.

I actually had a feeling about that when I posted both those names but wasn't quite sure.  And I still remember you Kaworu... like I said I know I forgot a crapload of people. :(

And holy crap, how could I forget about Faust? ;_;

Yeah I'm still here! I'm not a very active poster, but I read the forums daily and hang around on IRC. Same goes for DS. It's nice to see some of the old faces again!

Faust: GamemasterX was friend of Ty (if you remember him), he used to post here in 2003-2005 or something.

I don't, like at all. Although his uber cool forum tag makes me regret not being friends with the GAME MASTER....X!!!
