Title: [DEMO] White Reflections - Lost Dreams Saga
Post by: Meadzy on December 08, 2010, 06:09:26 am
Hey, I've had this RPG Maker project for sometime and I never released a demo so I figured why not, maybe I'll get into RPG Makering again if I get some criticism of it.

Game Overview

White Reflections, I'm hoping, will be the first installment of an epic that I've been planning out for well over four years now. I figured, "Hey, I like RPG's, why not make an RPG?" And here we are. My plan is to have a trilogy of the "Lost Dreams Saga."

All-in-all, this is your typical fantasy RPG.

The setting is the world of Valivirtua, a large continent that the main character, Reiji, will spend his time traveling around. It is a very large world with many different characters to meet and interact with. The premise of the story is that Reiji must leave his own nation and travel to Higanashi, a rival nation, and work as a mercenary. Here Reiji will meet and interact with many different playable characters while the player (you) gets to see further into the world of Valivirtua.

The game features a complete CBS and CMS. There are also 3 different fighting classes that you can choose from.

I also thought it might be cool if some users were interested in making cameo appearances in my game, like maybe the main character from your game interacts with Reiji somehow. Anyway, just a though.

You know, I've gotten pretty lazy as of late, so what I'm doing is releasing a demo of my game, (its pretty short) so that maybe you'll comments will spur me on to keep going or something. Anyway, hope you enjoy!

I just downloaded this but I'm way too tired to start playing it right now. I'm going to give it a try tomorrow though, and hopefully I'll be able to come up with some good feedback. The first thing that strikes me, without having actually played any of it yet, is that the names of the people and places pretty much make my eyes glaze over.

By the third paragraph I think I was actually mid-coma. Having all of those names in the advert doesn't accomplish much for you because they don't mean anything to the player yet. You're giving specific details out when you could get by with a lot less.

I just need a rough overview to know if the premise is something I'd be interested in or not. "The country has been torn apart by several ongoing wars in the wake of the last King's death. One general, involved in one of the most violent conflicts, will find the course his life forever changed after a chance encounter with a mysterious foe puts him on the path to unraveling the darkest secrets of _name of country here_"

Admittedly, my "teaser" paragraph is still pretty bad, but it gives a glimpse of what the game is (might be) about without beating people over the head with multi-syllable names.

I spent a little time with this before work this morning. My biggest suggestion is that you use picture transparency to do your screen tinting, especially on your battle maps. Battle animations display behind pictures, so they would have the shading effect applied to them as well.

I made it as far as the first save point inside the Northern Peak. Here are my notes up to that point:

You need to tell people that some rtp files are required to play your game, or you need to include them yourself. Char1, Char3, and Char4 (General1,3,4 in my translation) were missing. The Dawn2 (Daybreak2) panorama and bolt1 (Thunder1) sound effect.

During your intro, there is a mapping error with the big officer's tent.

In the first mission, on the map to the left, I wasn't able to help the soldier in the upper right side. The one who was surrounded.

Doing 1000+ damage during the intro is a good way of showing how overpowered a character can be, but when the enemies soak up 2500+ before dying, and only dish out 24-29 damage per turn, it just feels a little off. Either let me one hit the enemies so my character seems like a complete powerhouse, or let the enemies damage him a little more so they come across as something more than highly resilient cannon fodder.

After the Krinos fight, the cbs glitched and left a picture of the cursor onscreen. It stayed there until the end of the next battle event.

There should be a switch that checks to see if the player has already saved at the diary so they can leave the room without being reminded to do something they just did.

Face set/character design choices. Asuka and Reiji look to be about the same age.

The name Fai is used interchangeably with Fei.

It was strange to see Terry Bogard wandering around the castle.

Was able to walk through Leon in the training room.

If I exit the cms when I have my cursor on an option other than the top one, it leaves a picture on the screen when I close it out.

The battle event from the intro must not have closed out properly. My first attack in the training area came out as the Inferno move from the intro part.

The save point. "Save anywhere you see me" should be changed to "When you stand on me." Everybody knows you have to 'activate' a save point, but the way you worded it made it sound like the player could save anytime one was on screen with them. I do like how generous you were with the save point placement though. The missing file errors at the beginning had me expecting a crash every time I entered a new map (I had to restart five times to get as far as the training section), so it was nice that I was able to save ALMOST as often as I would have liked.

The map with the traveler after leaving the city needs more exit events at the bottom.

The jump events on the path to the northern peak need a little work. Just make it so they only trigger if the character is facing them.

While fighting the bears, I noticed that after killing one of them, the names for both enemies still appeared onscreen until the end of the fight.

Sometimes I was able to move off of save points while navigating the menu. Your movement blocker (or whatever you're using) needs to kick in just a little sooner.

As for the actual presentation of the game, you've done a nice job. Aside from a face set or two, the graphics fit together nicely. The use of screen tinting helps add to the atmosphere of the different locations, and the music all seems to fit the scenes it is applied to.

I'm going to finish the demo out later this evening and see if I come up with anymore notes for you. It looks like a lot of work went into your custom menu and your battle system. I would like to see some more unique options in battle though. You've gone to the trouble of creating a nice custom system, but it doesn't really add anything (aside from showing enemy attacks) that the dbs doesn't have.

It seemed like only one of the bandits attacked in the cave battles. – In fights against multiple bandits, the bottom most one never seems to actually attack.

Battle guage/timer fills way too slow. I don’t like waiting 10+ seconds to attack. At two hits per enemy, three enemies, that is at least a minute spent just waiting to act in battle, not counting the fact that the gauge stops during enemy attacks!

In the thief cave, there is something that looks very much like a chest but can’t be opened and has no text.

File Reiji2 can’t be opened. – doors in castle when you need to meet Miyamoto. I discovered that it only happens when Reiji has to remind the player to go see Miyamoto, so by going right to him I was able to get around the glitch.

Got in a fight while menu was open. After the fight, character was frozen, had to open and close menu to get control back.

Day night system error? Seemed like one battle lasted two days worth of day night cycles… The cycle is way too fast.

Seems like the bottom enemy never attacks, in any group.

Strange glitch during the transition right before “Great, a forest.”

! Rescuing the little blue thing triggered a DBS battle. It was the fastest fight yet!

Screen doesn’t come back from black after some events. Had to access the menu to get it back? Went into a DBS fight with the screen blacked out against Rasl.

Character got stuck checking a locked door in the misty town.

Weird, demo was supposed to end right before you got to the forest. Anyway thanks for playing, I'm definitely going to look into everything you posted, again thank you; I can't imagine it was fun to play through all that.

Though I'm beginning to think I may have uploaded the wrong file because a lot of the issues you posted, I though I had already fixed...oh well.

I downloaded the demo and gave it a shot.

As far as the CBS goes, it feels kind of like a replacement for the DBS. There wasn't a whole lot of changes it felt like. I just kept using Attack round after round and the rounds themselves took forever to come up. Maybe you could speed up the ATB charge rate in general, or make it speed up with fewer party members so when it's just Reiji, it doesn't feel so incredibly slow.

Also there were some glitches with being able to open the menu with some text boxes already in progress (while talking to someone). And if you're holding a direction when you open the menu, he continues to move briefly which caused a serious problem when I managed to move onto another screen while opening the menu. The next screen had some auto-dialog begin with a character that initiated a battle. During that battle, I was able to open the menu which was very problematic, as you can imagine!

Other than that, I enjoyed what I played and I'd love to see more! Keep up the good work!
