Title: D&D session on IRC
Post by: Faust on December 09, 2010, 09:15:50 pm
I was talking to a few IRC guys and we came to the conclusion that we need to play D&D really, and we need to do it soon.

Faust
Toothache
Dorothy

If anyone else has interest post here and we'll sort it out.

We're using 3.5e and will be playing on IRC most likely! I'm going to DM it maybe unless someone else would prefer to.

LET ME/US KNOW :D!!

Just posting to confirm my interest. Not sure what class I want to play yet, but I'm leaning towards bard since I don't think I've played one before. I'll run a few prestige class ideas by you if they are allowed too.

Maybe another time. I'm getting disoriented from staring at my screen so I'm gonna log off the compy.  I'd be glad to participate another time however.

Yo I didn't mean D&D THIS SECOND! We're sorting out a regular sesh!

Swordfish: get the D&D 3.5e books. If you cannot afford them (they are like £15-20 each) then I'm sure...you can find them...another way...using the internets. I'm in no way suggesting you torrent them, as that would be terrible and like the worst crime ever (plus I think there's a NO DISCUSSING WAREZ policy here), so again I'm not suggesting that ho ho ho! But they're easy to acquire.

Get yourself to IRC and I'm sure I won't be able to help you out.

EDIT: Also there's a legal alternative - http://www.d20srd.org/ (http://www.d20srd.org/)

I'd be willing to play if we played GURPS instead... and that you'd start after the 18th (when my semester ends)

I don't really like D&D.

Dude, GURPS is totally an option for the future at some point, but at the second we're all jizzgasming over 3.5e.

4e is bullshit. I came here to post that not actually expecting any 3.5e vs 4e discussion. I don't know anything about D&D aside from what I remember from the beginning of high school and see in the video games, but after looking through the 4e manual even I thought whoa this is dumb these guys have no idea how to run anything. or maybe I don't get it

I may play a goblin commoner or rogue

All my freinds books that I've been borrowing are 3.5e.

If it's a 3.5 game, I could give it a go the first time around. Although I'd prefer to spectate having not played before, I don't mind jumping right in either.

I shoulda posted here before anyone brought 4 up. I know we're not playing 4 but people still have to talk about it like it is something even worth talking about.

Ok!!

1) Sure you can spectate. We're doing it on IRC, so just join the channel when we announce the FINAL TIMINGS. I'm assuming it's today or tomorrow - still have to speak to Dorothy.
2) You don't HAVE to know how to play - newbies are fine - but you may want to read the manuals first.
3) Yeah it's totally 3.5e. Fuck 4e. Warforge wtf!?!? WHERE ARE GNOMES?!!

Because of timezones it is possible that we will have dual storylines/sessions. Right now the first session is scheduled for 7P GMT in irc.esper.net #havern tomorrow. I will probably be running a different session for the NA people until we can find a time that works for everyone. Join up #havern if you have any questions as I should be around.

I'm acquainted with 3.5 myself...haven't played 4e. I've heard a lot of bad things about 4e, like it's dumbed down or something? I'm not sure. Have you played it before, Unguided?

Anyway, this sounds pretty cool, but I bet scheduling for a game will be annoying.

It isn't about "chances", we arranged to play tonight at 7pm GMT. I just assumed the session with ric would involve different people than tooth/dicko, as now like their characters have EXPERIENCE and mine doesn't, that is if they're going to be up for playing two days in a row!

I feel that dicko has shit all over my sunbeams!
Title: D&D session on IRC
Post by: Terrorantula on December 13, 2010, 04:30:38 pm
Clean them off.  I'm sure dicko will find a way to work things out- either separate sessions, as you say, an option to start your characters at a higher level to offset the EXP gain (Leaked Experience), or whatever. So I'm sure it'll be fine.

TO Digress.. . . I like some of the new 4e concepts, types, and areas- the Genasi, the Primordials, and Returned Abeir spring to mind- but haven't actually played in the battle system. I suspect some of the new characters could be converted to to the old versions, so one could play a Genasi in 3.5, for example, though origins might need some altering, unless one decided to use the 3.5 rules in the 4E world.
Title: D&D session on IRC
Post by: Faust on December 13, 2010, 04:32:01 pm
GENASI! They do exist in 3.5e don't they, aren't they PLANETOUCHED? Like you can already be an airguy/earthguy etc just like you can be an aasimar or tiefling. I'm sure!!!

I AM SURE!!!!
Title: D&D session on IRC
Post by: Toothache on December 13, 2010, 04:37:25 pm
Genasi appear in the Manual of the Planes, and its an easy transition to adapt them for a PC race. Probably have a LA+1 like most planar races though
Title: D&D session on IRC
Post by: Faust on December 13, 2010, 04:44:26 pm
Ok, just looked and they actually also appear in the more standard Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting 3rd Ed, as PC races no less. They are indeed +1 EL, so you have to start at level 2 to have a player class as well, but yeah they've been in 3rd ed as playable races since BEFORE 3.5e even!!!

Cool!

However, if  I DO play tonight (or whenever we meet next) I'm thinking of being a bard- I haven't tried that yet but I believe it would be a good fit.  A bit of trickery, a little magic,  oodles of style and lots of varied knowledge, with singing as a bonus.

I sort of enjoy the party dynamic going on. We have Parrap, the eternal goody-two shoes, Gremlian, the belligerent rogue always up for a scrap and to be as irreverent as possible, and Carfal, who is trying to be the Machiavellian manipulator of sorts and getting into even more trouble than the others combined. Gonna be even more nuts when we meet up with the other party members, there's a nice healthy mix of chaos already.

You know.... I'd really love to play this game.  I know a lot about it and have been watching gametable and podcast sessions for well over a year now (what can I say, most of it - when the combat isn't dragging on - can be pretty entertaining depending on who you are watching. Anyway, I have a very good grasp of the game and have only to... acquire the handbooks (other than monster the monster manuals, which I always get) and actually start building a character and getting myself into a session.

If you aren't into handholding that's tine.... but if not here do you guys have any suggestions for learning how to play and actually playing this game once and for all on the internet (other than something awful, after all this time I still don't have an account).

To give you an idea as to what I'd like to try... I'd prefer a shardmind warlock. If not that I'd take something less complicated for my first run and try a warlord of some sort.

Post by: Doros Scandia on March 20, 2011, 11:23:27 pm
We will happily do handholding as long as you aren't cockbrained retarded. I don't know very much about other tools except for just getting someone to sit down and run a session with you one on one. Again the difference is that the way we play through IRC doesn't use the grid (for better or worse). I'll be happy to sit down with you one night and show you the ropes.
