How fat are you? Are you HUGE?
How do people get so enormous they can barely move. I mean, from a social point of view. Is there something about modern day industrial society that allows this to happen. Does it suck so much people have to derive pleasure from eating? Is it a case of bad resource distribution? Etc.

I am like, just slightly overweight and I already fucking hate it and am working to lose my excess fat. How people can get this fat baffles me. It'd just be so horribly uncomfortable and socially crippling.

I lost like 40 pounds in the last 2 years or something, somehow. I walk or bike to get anywhere so I blame fucking cars

I think it's diet even more than exercise. We don't know where 95% of our food comes from.... it's often processed beyond recognition and contains hideous amounts of sugar and salt.
If the average person ate healthily but didn't exercise, I think they would actually be in better shape than someone who eats poorly but exercises a bit.
Obviously both are required to be healthy.
I used to make excuses for fat people like "They could be on medication that makes me fat" or "Maybe they just have a really slow metabolism". That's sometimes the case, for sure. But I worked at a grocery store and noticed a direct correlation between being obese and buying ridiculous amounts of unhealthy food. :gofigure:
It's crazy to me, losing weight is such an issue for some people..
I've always had the world's fastest metabolism, so gaining weight or at least not losing weight is a big struggle. I have to eat and work out constantly or I waste away. I'm always inspired when I see a big fatty in the gym. It's such an uphill battle, I admire the effort.
-
part of it's learned. the whole CLEAN YOUR PLATE idea, eating until you're full. kids are taught to stuff themselves
buttt there are also lots of other issues that can contribute and we're not gonna cover them all itt. so I hope it suffices to say people who are obese don't uh deserve it or whatever
a more interesting subject is our society's obsession with weight in general. it's absurd. but did it start as a free market/media thing or not? I dunno. I definitely get how companies create new problems for the public to be worried about/buy products to fix, and weight could really easily be one of those 'problems'. but it could just as easily have been something Lord Entrepreneurs feasted upon given the opportunity to make big bucks so I dunno for sure

I think you're on to something earl with the whole money thing. IDK since like the 80's or so people have been encouraged to EAT EAT EAT everywhere we go. There's food everywhere! People are always just snackin' and drinking sodas whenever and wherever. I don't think it's a coincidence that obesity has skyrocketed since then
-

this too. I used to eat better food but had like 2 helpings of everything. I really didn't do anything spectularly different with diet (eat only carrots and pork knuckles) just not eat until fuckin gorged with food
I also p much didn't drink any soda ever except when out. I'm kind of breaking that rule now
-
haha i've been hospitalized for like a total of a month and a half because of being underweight. I really shouldn't be posting in this topic.

that too, but I was thinking more about the obsession with weight/losing weight/"looking good" and all the products, diet programs and services associated with that. there's tons of money in that market. and it's all pounded into our heads so much we don't realize how absurd it is. it really seems like idk I'll call it a manufactured market, to me. also consider how healthier food is more expensive and cheap food is often filled with garbage you shouldn't be eating and will end up making you obese or giving you acne (another big market) or creating other mental and physical health problems. so you take a vitamin, buy some combination oily/dry skin moisturizer and a bottle of conditioner for your brittle hair before stopping at the drug store to pick up some zicam, cialis, lipitor, and your kid's adderall
and I guess the icing on the cake is how the cheap food, like fast food or hostess snak paks or whatever, is also often designed to get you in & out, so you can get back to browsin the market increase your purchasing power tenfold. aaaa don't even think about the oil/automotive industries here
what worries me about the rise of "healthy alternatives" that are also quick and convenient is that it's a sign all this junk has become so ingrained into modern society that we've accepted it as normal and are now moving past it, and there's no going back. we depend on fast food, bottled water, snack machines; they're part of life, we need them to leave the office at this time get to the client's house by noon and then back to office etc

I've got some extra squish. I dunno if I'd call myself fat, even though I weigh quite a bit. Most people estimate me to be around 190-200. I'm 235-240. I used to be fit/athletic, and most my weight came on within half a year. Having poor eating habits doesn't really help either.
I don't think there's anything wrong with enjoying food..I think the problem is the kind of food people are enjoying. The past few years I've really gotten into making food from scratch. It takes up more time but its really worth it.

When I got my current job at the grocery store where I'm labelled a sacker but do every job in the store, I entered at 160lbs. At the time it was the most I had ever weighed. I am 6'2" and have been skinny my entire life. I was at 145lbs when I graduated H.S.
Fast forward 3 1/2 years, today I type this at 215lbs. I see food all day at my job. I then have to find food to eat on break and/or lunch that can be bought and eaten within a 15 minute period (30 for lunch). So not only do I see alot of junk, but I am forced to eat junk as healthy food generally needs to be prepared or is so expensive I can't afford to eat it on a daily basis.
When I was skinny, I ate 2 or 3 times a day. My daily eating schedule is now:
1. Eat when I wake up, as I get ready for work
2. Eat at first break
3. Eat at lunch
4. Eat at last break
5. Eat when I get home from work
6. Eat dinner
7. Eat ice cream before I go to bed
Needless to say it's no mystery why I have gained 55lbs. In fact about 40 of that was gained within the first 6 months of my job.

drug commercials scare me mostly because of how unironic they are. Enzyte is like the only funny one the rest are like "some fish oil shit I am in a lab under the ocean yes this is actually what we do to make our fish oil medication we literally have this space-age undersea lab like Dr. Evil"
also I think Viagra had one funny commercial where the doctor sort of gives the guy a high-five I think
but that other penis pill commercial where they're like at the beach laying in bathtubs that are randomly placed there wtf is that I mean I'm sure it's some symbolism or something but it's like they just have free reign to throw whatever visual elements they feel like we will make a billion dollars no matter what half-assed commercial we make - just make sure to glorify old people or something fishing on some pier in the most nostalgic setting ever echoes of an America that never existed (america.flv) - it's like car commercials really just instead of ridiculous road trips in impossibly beautiful settings American dream = a man and his car it's like some weird mythology of old people like I expect something sinister behind the scenes of this fantasy world the commercial produces like systematically executing anybody from hippie generation --> now random young people cashiers who have wronged them. anybody with earrings/tattoo

i think that people are fat mostly because of poor diet.
nutrition is probably the one thing where public opinion differs most from fact. i think that people should start eating according to the paleolithic diet-- high protein, high fat, low carb, no sugar, no grains (man, grain is sooo bad for you; it totally messes up body chemistry). it's amazing what a difference this sort of diet makes to health; it eliminates all diseases of society, like obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cavities, etc... you know, i'm writing a research paper about this for school because i think it's all very interesting. everyone should read about it.
nutrition is so important but so many people don't care about it at all. the people who DO care usually don't actually know anything they're talking about-- dieters restrict calories and avoid fat, destroying their bodies. but they think they're healthy just because they're losing weight. many people have no idea how to monitor their fat percentage or their body functioning.
personally, i have been underweight for most of my life (because of eating disorders). the past couple years i have fluctuated in the normal range, and i was slightly overweight for a little bit. nowadays i'm in the normal range, losing weight because i'm working on switching over to the paleolithic diet (and because i have a better psychological perception of food).
it feels so good to be getting healthy. even though i simply don't have time for exercise, i can improve my health by learning about nutrition. i think everyone should try to be well-informed about this stuff.
anyways, that's what makes people fat.
-
I used to weigh 135.4kgs two months ago, one month ago, I weighed 118.7kgs and now I can see my penis when urinating while standing without having to suck in my belly or lean forward, so I am assuming I lost even more weight.
OH, I'm 1.95m tall.

https://www.msu.edu/~corcora5/food/vegan/calcium+protein.html (https://www.msu.edu/%7Ecorcora5/food/vegan/calcium+protein.html)
Really high animal protein diets can contribute to calcium loss.
Anyways, I think the paleo diet can be good. I agree that lots of grains are bad, not all but some. Like, I think gluten is bad (regardless if you have an allergy/intolerance or not). But traditional paleolithic people/hunter-gathers diets consisted of more plant based foods than animal ones because they're easier to get (plants don't move animals do).
Basically any diet that goes from processed, high wheat, high soy, high sugar...etc to a diet high in fruits, nuts, vegetables, seeds, organic grass fed meats...etc will be pretty good.

The thing about eating just cabbage and fruits is that it keeps me hungry forever
-
I'm extremely underweight.. I wish I could be fatter. 6'1" and only around 115 lbs. I've tried it all - good diets, bad diets, stuffing my face with whatever junk food I could get my hands on, and nothing works.

how about starting to work out?? i can eat as much as i want and i do not gain weight, really. i also go out way too much and drink too much beer and other shit and that doesn't do anything for me either. but when i started going to gym and working out i gained some weight p.quickly. i was never underweight but now i'm a lot more comfortable with my weight than a few years ago.
-
I'm fat. 220 lb's, about 6 foot. BMI of 30 Technically in the 'obese' category. but on the lower end of that spectrum.
I enjoy fatty foods to much to give them up... Though I'm trying to give up soda which is the real killer for me because I drink WAY too much of it. I imagine I'd lose a LOT of weight if I just cut soda out of my diet. Though I already try as hard as I can to avoid HFCS.
Not much of a sugar fiend outside of sodas and ice cream (which is my usual desert if I have one, not a big pie or cake guy). Though I say this and I have some chocolate and peanut butter treat thing in front of me. :P Though I tried it and it's kind of meh. Think I'll eat the rest later.
Apparently wheat isn't healthy... when was this found out? I mean 100% whole wheat bread is healthier then that bleached and processed white bread right? Because I usually get 100% Wheat bread. I mean is BREAD not healthy? What bread should I be getting?
Another thing for me is that I love bacon, pork, pork ribs, and ham. I know I can't give these up, and just reducing the amount I eat of these would be hard to do because pork and such is fucking delicious. Also love burgers and steak of course. Same with fried chicken. Grilled chicken is too bland unless it was also marinated.
Another thing holding me back is my skill in cooking and the fact that I sort of hate cooking. I get bored. I just want to eat the damn thing and get back to what I was doing. I also have a 'don't waste food' thing ingrained into me because of my dad, reducing the amount of experimentation I do because I don't want to waste food by it screwing up when cooking and the other ingrained bullshit of not letting food on my plate go to waste.
On the healthier side of things. I love most veggies and fruits.
Exercise-wise, I have a 10 minute walk to get to class, and when I do go to eat at a restaurant I walk there, as I don't have a car. I have 2 bikes but I haven't gotten around to fixing them. Unfortunately I spend a LOT of time on computers SITTING. however when I move out of the house I've been living at I'll likely get a adjustable sitting/standing desk which should help. I'm still going to play games and watching online TV sitting down, but work and internet surfing will be done standing.

yeah mat, the only weight I've been able to gain is in muscle

thanks for posting this. it's a great example of how people care way too much about food and nutrition. paleolithic diet?? humans didn't even exist until the upper paleolithic right
idk how this even sounds like a good idea to you or doc. how many years ago was that? isn't that enough time for evolution to bring about a resistance these abstract "bad things" you mentioned, similar to our resistance to alcohol? how comes it was the human race that changed its diet and became the dominant species, and not the other hominids who remained hunter-gatherers? and how long did these god-like hominids (reeks of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ages_of_Man) live, anyway? is their diet really something we want to emulate
look how you've selected this one aspect of paleolithic life that absolutely must be emulated, but everything else is apparently give or take. they were called hunter-gatherers for a reason, they had to actively hunt and gather their food to stay alive. their whole day was spent stalking prey, hunting, traveling on foot. you mention "knowing how to monitor their fat percentage". you think paleolithic people knew anything about that? no, they just needed the high fat content in order to store energy in their bodies: they could go days without meat, or any food at all. yet you propose eating like they did for every meal, even though you don't have time for exercise (bull btw, apparently you have time for animes. if you really don't have time, quit some extracurriculars or drop some worthless AP courses. protein is for muscles and exercise is part of being a living human, much more so than some garbage diet)
really I think stuff like this paints a pretty neat picture of our society. we're always looking some secret that will make our lives easier. that's dumb. if life's a butt it's because we've made it that way, all the stress and obligations and superfluous garbage we have to put up with just to live. it's all market-driven
oh yeah I wanted to make a point about how worrying so much about diet is unhealthy too w/e

my eating habbits are appauling(rarely eat) but I have weight due to the sheer volume of alcohol I consume.

I would really recommend getting soda out of your regular diet ASAP. Replace it with water and you'll start to feel so much better! Get one of those big nalgene bottles, and just drink water out of that all day.
Just stick to the basic whole foods categories(legumes, veggies, nuts, whole grains, unprocessed meats) and plan your meals so you set aside time to prepare and eat your food. Don't do the whole JUST SNACKIN' thing all day. You should get more exercise too, but that's true for everyone. Don't try and substitute a standing-desk for actually going outside and doing some running, it's not something you can really go half-way on and expect any change. Once you get out there and start movin' around you'll feel great.
-
According to Google I'm about 140 lbs (±64 kg), and I'm 5"11 (181 cm). I remember that about two or so years ago I used to weigh less than 60 kg. I'm far from being fat but I should really get some more exercise.
-

I wouldn't worry about it
helicopter parents say soda is a killer and that's not true, but it is essentially a candy. drink it as a treat
concerning meats, you could try different kinds of preparation. look into blackening or marinating with stuff like vinegar and cayenne. chicken or turkey sausage is really flavorful and relatively light
could try weight lifting after the 10 minute walk

yeah what dietcoke said.
cutting soda to minimum/to a treat and start drinking more water is a good start. besides soda is the killer to teeth and uh you don't want to fuck your teeth to a bad shape! permament pains, cardio and blood vessel problems etc etc. it's never too late for your teeth.
cooking feels like a big, difficult hassle at the beginning (t-the treshold...) but it gets easier and faster pretty quickly. i'm sorry that the fresh vegetables are more expensive in america! but by logic if you cook your food in one go for several days to a whole week then it should pay off? plus it should be more healthier and tastier. equally quick to warm up like fast foods too.
the thing about these changes is that you propably won't miss the old shit once you get into these habits because of HOW GOOD IT FEELS. you propably don't want the old life back. i've had good opportunities to eat a balanced, tasty diet and jesus christ i don't want to get back to bad food and habits no matter what!!! i feel so shitty after eating fast/gross food stuff nowdays. though sometimes when i get candies and soda it actually feels/tastes pretty good/like SOMETHING now.
aa jesus i hope this post doesn't seem like one big conversion effort but seriously: i don't think you need to change or give much, warped, to start to feel BETTER and improve like immidiately eg that soda. or idk taking ice cream only at weekends? healthy life is baby steps like these.

they were called hunter-gatherers for a reason, they had to actively hunt and gather their food to stay alive. their whole day was spent stalking prey, hunting, traveling on foot.
Actually hunter-gatherers worked (by work I mean got food) an average of 14 or so hours a week (we work an average of 40 for full time) to survive. The rest of the time was spent doing other things like sitting around fires and telling stories, playing games, making things...BONFIRES lol.

This is a very familiar discussion lol.

I dunno about 14 hours, but I realize a big kill would last them several days. the point was they were active, I'm not really interested beyond that right now

hey uh might as well post in this topic you know those SHAKE WEIGHTS besides looking like you're wanking lol isn't that like the worst possible thing to do at the same time wouldn't it destroy your wrists (like wanking 1000 times a day)
-
I put on some weight when I'm drinking a lot over a period, but it's mostly the amount of bullshit food I eat when I'm drunk. Like 3 packs of instant noodles in a night, or stuff like that. Also I sometimes get into habits of eating late otherwise. If I manage to keep away from those kinds of things, I'm okay with weight at least. I've never really been fat or anything but there are some mornings where I'll look at myself and mirror and see how it could get that way.

I have far too much sex to ever get fat.
That's a lie. I am actually a skeleton chained to a Pentium 486.

Vegetables are cheap no matter how you look at it. I refuse to believe that buying vegetables is somehow more expensive than buying ready made or processed food unless you're buying CANS OF SPAM or something.
-
well i mean it probably depends on what you're getting. like it's going to be more expensive to buy the stuff for a salad than buy some bread and processed lunch meat or a frozen dinner. and any of those options are probably going to be more expensive than just taking two minutes to go to mcdonalds. at the same time ii don't think that this is at all a valid excuse for the level of obesity a lot of people get to and you can get some pretty healthy stuff if you shop carefully.
-
IM FAT IM THE FATTEST

you jews, you just want to own the most of everything. Money, palestine, food. You make me sick.
-
Go to a Farmers marker it's cheap and usually great quality (Fresh, organic, not looking like shit like some at the store).
-

Well, it's perfectly reasonable not to want to eat a salad for lunch every day. But I'm sure that if you buy some simple vegetables and pasta you could make a bunch of really great dinners at a lower price than when you would go to McDon't on each of those days. Even if you buy them from the store rather than a market.
-

no they're not cheap no matter how you look at it. fresh vegetables (especially organic) are really, really expensive in the U.S.A.
-
Fuck salad
I think it takes less energy to cook a lot of food in bulk than it takes to cook small portions
What is with that organic bull shit
If you only buy "organic" because you feel sorry for the exploited third world farmers, well if you don't buy from them they'll starve and die
-
I also demand proof that raw ingredients are that much expensive than industrial food in US
-
no they're not cheap no matter how you look at it. fresh vegetables (especially organic) are really, really expensive in the U.S.A.
That's kind of strange and worrying to me. I mean I suppose it depends on which vegetable you're buying but let's take french fries as an example. This (image) (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_CXVtm97fWDo/TIBDrsMInJI/AAAAAAAAB88/MMcC756VZdk/s1600/food-mcdonalds-french-fries.jpg) would cost you, say, 1 EUR around here. But for 1 EUR I could also buy one and a half kilos worth of potatoes, even from the supermarket. And sure, you still need the frying oil, but even then it's cheaper if you consider the volume.
The same goes for canned pasta sauce. If you buy 1 EUR worth of tomatoes, celery, onions and carrot I'm sure you could make a way better sauce which, considering the volume, is cheaper.
-
I think you're not taking into consideration the energy/labour costs
Also post a sauce recipe
-
it all depends. A lot of the fresh veggies I get are pretty reasonable but there's times where you'll see an outrageous price like 1 dollar for a cucumber or something. Organic produce in supermarkets is even worse, it's only really worth buying organic at places like co-ops or farmers markets.
I think it takes less energy to cook a lot of food in bulk than it takes to cook small portions
That's what my wife and I do. We'll make huge pots of something like a curry chicken stew, soup, chili, or pasties, portion it out into containers, and then freeze em'. It's great cuz there's always a selection of pretty healthy food to eat that's easy to cook up when we're too lazy or busy to prepare dinner.
-
I think you're not taking into consideration the energy/labour costs
Also post a sauce recipe
1. cut onions, celery, carrot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirepoix_(cuisine)) and tomatoes.
2. onions, celery and carrot in oil for a few minutes. add tomatoes only when they've softened up and become glazy. if you use butter, use a lower temperature and some more time.
3. add tomatoes. now add some salt, pepper, perhaps some vegetable stock, smoked paprika powder (http://www.gauchogourmet.com/Merchant5/graphics/00000001/LaChinataPaprikalr.jpg), oregano (http://www.pacificexportinggroup.com/imagenes/productos/oregano.jpg) and whatever else you like.
This is the basis that's doable in literally just 5 minutes, not counting the waiting time (let it simmer).

whenever I make rice I'm eating rice for the next 5 days
Dada, you guys probably have loads of taxes on fast food/junk food over there, if not on the customer then on the companies. here, it's essentially like this: the worse the quality of the food, the cheaper it is and vice versa. that's a big reason why the poor here have such an obesity problem, not to mention the rest of their health problems. they are essentially always dehydrated and malnourished even if they drink a lot and eat plenty. I'm not gonna post the free market reason I've done that enough itt
still you can get like 5 chiquita or dole bananas for under a dollar
I think you're not taking into consideration the energy/labour costs
Also post a sauce recipe
cayenne/red chili powder, vinegar

Farmers markets? Over here they are wayyy more expensive than supermarket prices, and in my experience more likely to have fruit/veg that's gone off
-
i don't know how i do it but i'm 35 pounds underweight. :/
-
yeah kawour it depends. one near my house has pretty good food for around the same price as the supermarket, sometimes cheaper sometimes more expensive. the other one a little farther away has lots of cheap, huge, obviously GMO foods but no one is trendy/up to date there so they don't care
I haven't price-checked in the city, but from what I've seen a lot of the stuff in those farmers markets is more expensive than it is in the supermarkets out here. the stuff in there is always organic and of good quality because the urban sludge-people demand it
-
idk it could just be a regional thing but all the farmers markets and co-ops slingin' local veg around here are generally priced the same or lower than the supermarkets. If they're priced higher you can just tell the person at the stand that the grocery store is selling it for cheaper and if you know the price they'll match it cuz they just want to sell everything before it goes bad.

Where's Psyburn he should post here about how skinny he is. I miss him. :c
-
Try going to farmers markets like 30 min. before they're set to close because I have a friend that does that all the time and they make their prices lower trying to get rid of all of their stuff.
-
now I have to make a song called "Local Veg"

Nah don't because all the stuff they sell at the end of the day is terrible.
But yeah the earlier you go, the better the products will be, generally speaking.

I'm 5'6 and weigh about 12 1/2 stone, about 74-78kg our weighing scales arn't very acurate, and i can't see the numbers very well; but i am loosing weight and still loosing it. Thing is i can't belive i ever gained it, i was a thin kid and didn't play many computer games, it wasn't till i went to secondary school did i really gain weight and even then it wasn't a huge amount.
I'ts a bit of a paradox since i wonder how people (myself especially) can let themselves go and yet at the same time i know why i did.
